The Broadmeadows Amateur Swimming and Life Saving Club was formed on the 27th September, 1961, with the intention of competing at the Olympic pool complex in Goulburn Street, which was then under construction.
On the 2nd October 1961 at a General Meeting held at the Methodist Church (now Uniting Church) in Camp Road, the constitution was adopted.
During 1961-62 many children joined the new swim club, but unfortunately due to the pool complex not being completed until after the swim season no swimming was possible.
The new pool opened on the 6th October 1962, with the Club having exclusive use of the pool during the summer season on Sundays from 10:45am to 12:45am and for an hour each Tuesday and Thursday evening for training.
On the 30th October 1962 Broadmeadows Amateur Swimming and Life Saving Club was affiliated with the V.A.S.A. (now Swimming Victoria) with 38 female and 47 male members being registered. Season 1964-65 saw the Club enter teams in the V.A.S.A. inter club competition for the first time.
The Clubs first swimming carnival was held on the 12th March 1966, this has now become a annual event and November 2005 will be our 24th such event.Much sought after clubrooms were completed in 1967 and leased to the Club from Broadmeadows City Council (now Hume City Council), allowing us to furnish the rooms from funds originally raised for its construction.
During 1969 arrangements were made to conduct the first Three Way Swim Meet between the clubs of Broadmeadows, Oak Park and Fawkner. Over the years this event grew and when last held consisted of six clubs, Broadmeadows, Oak Park, Coburg / Fawkner, Pascoe Vale, Sunbury and Craigieburn.
On the 25th October 1970 the Clubrooms were officially opened and named after the late Lance Gilmour, founding member, our first Treasurer and later President of some eight years.
Junior pool (25yards) racing was introduced in season 1973 / 74 for our young and novice swimmers.
Much to the satisfaction of all swimmers a gas heating system was installed to all pools for season 1982 / 83.
The Club introduced computerized graded racing sheets and recordings in season 1984 / 85, the first Club to do so in Victoria.
1990 / 91 season saw the commencement of our winter Mini Swim. A smaller version of our summer competition but held indoors. Over the years Mini Swim has been held at Broadmeadows, Fawkner and Craigieburn pools, to not only keep everyone swimming off season but to also encourage new swimmers.
Season 1997 / 98 found the Club with it's first ever sponsor by the way of Lanes Biscuits Pty Ltd, which enabled the Club to purchase tracksuits for all swimmers in the District team and subsidised suits for all other members.
The Club has been the starting point for a number swimmers at District, State and National level with all swimmers encouraged and keen enough to better their owns times season after season.
November 2007 offically saw the closure of the Goulburn Street Outdoor Pool due to excessive water leakage. But not the Broadmeadows Swim Club.
