station out of Albany with excellent tour and displays. The panoramic view over the harbour and sound
from Stony Lookout is excellent. It's a very scenic coastline - the Gap and Natural Bridge.

There is fishing within walking distance, and plenty of great bike paths.
See the Dog Rock in Middleton Street, some wag painted a tail on it. Visit the Memorial lookout, good
views & photo opportunity. Lunch at the "Nippers Cafe" at the Marron Farm and continue on to Two Peoples Bay.

BIG4 Albany Gardens Holiday Park, Albany
Formerly Mt Melville Caravan Park. 22 Wellington Street, 1 km north of post office. Ph: 08 9841 4616 or 1800 888 617. BIG4 member.
$25.20 per night with BIG4 discount. We visited after heavy rain and the park was very muddy. Although some sites remained unused
throughout our stay, we were only given two sites to choose from. Some sites had concrete slabs and all sites are drive through. This park
is starting to show its age. The toilet blocks could do with some TLC. The disabled shower in the women's toilet block had only a shower
curtain to give privacy to the person showering. Lighting in the park at night is totally inadequate. The staff were helpful and friendly.

Kalgan River Chalets & Caravan Park, Albany
The park is on Nararup Road and is on the Kalgan River 15 km east of Albany. Ph: 08 9844 7937 or 1800 447 937.
Although this park is a fair way from Albany, it is still close enough to visit and see the town.
Amenities are old but very clean and well kept, as is the laundry. The park is right on the river and away from highway noise.
Lots of bird life (including a talking Galah and Cockatoo). Kangaroos and other animals around the park. Has a boat ramp or you can
fish directly from the bank of the river.
Very friendly staff.
Price was as expected, good value for money ($22.00 2A per night powered).
Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is reasonable, water
pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, dry change area, paper towels/dryer provided.
Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by.
Good laundry, dump point.
Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere.
Basic playground in average condition. No pool.
Suitable for a week or more, well maintained park.
Likes: Although the park has some permanents, they are away from the tourist sites and the park is very quiet and peaceful.
The park was very quiet at the time of our visit. Showers have shower curtains to keep the change areas dry.
Dislikes: The new sites along the river edge were unpowered and are now being made powered sites. They have shade cloth covering
where the van and awning go and gravel in front. Two problems with these site: 1. They are so narrow neighbours can hear you breath.
They are very long but only wide enough for a caravan and awning. Our awning nearly covered the windows of the next van. 2. The new
power outlets they have installed will not take the 15amp leads (with the big earth pin). They are standard power outlets on a post
and not very weatherproof. Web site advertises a cafe/restaurant. This is closed down now. Apparently they are trying to reopen it.
Parking: Plenty of room to stop to book in, drive right down the long driveway past the golf and kangaroos and stop outside the
office.

Very good management, friendly management, management responsive to comments, management was helpful.
Reasonable value for money.
Poor amenities, water pressure was okay, there was adequate hot water.
Average sites, sites were level, lighting at night was adequate, the site size was okay.
Laundry, good camp kitchen.
Park atmosphere was okay, quiet, open and roomy park, family-friendly park.
Clean bbq (free), lit at night, with seating provided.
Basic playground in good condition.
Suitable for overnighter, the park was well maintained, the park can be considered kid-safe.
Likes: The friendly wildlife, golf course and management.
Dislikes: The toilets kept blocking up continually. As there was no pool, when it was hot, in the park it was very hot.
The kiosk was too far to walk to, being on the main road. We also thought it was fairly close to the town of Albany, but it was
much too far and as we had friends in town, it was lots of long drives. Don't get caught thinking what we did.

Signposted, but due to silly council by-laws limiting the number of signs allowed, you're left in the lurch once you leave
the South Coast Highway. Heading towards Ravensthorpe, turn right to Nanarup and look for signs to Kalgan River.
Large park, located by the Kalgan River. Houseboats available. Good facilities, golf, tennis. Has been let run down but new
owners trying to revamp the place. Amenities old but clean. Small maintenance work needed eg bolt missing from toilet door,
showerhead fell down all the time, couldn't be tightened. Sites quite large, water, power & sullage available. Some permanents.
Park empty at time of stay. Galah in loo to keep us company, very funny. Pleasant surroundings. $20 per night, quite reasonable.

Very good management, friendly management,
management responsive to comments, management was helpful. Very good value for money. Very good amenities,
adequate number to cater for tourists, close to sites, were clean, were in good condition, water pressure was okay,
there was adequate hot water. Good sites, sites were level, lighting at night was adequate, the site size was okay,
annexe slabs were available, drive-through sites were available, adequate taps close by. Laundry, rec room, late
checkout allowed (up to noon), good camp kitchen, kiosk, disabled facilities. Very good park atmosphere, quiet,
open and roomy park, shady park, family-friendly park. No pets because of abundant native wildlife. Good playground,
condition okay. Suitable for families, the park was well maintained.
Likes: On the banks of the Kalgan river. Small boat ramp available. 2 man canoes are available for hire. Noticed
some folk trying their luck fishing. A small well maintained 9 hole par 3 (and a few par 4 holes) golf course. A tennis court.
All equipment can be hired. Lovely long walks among very quiet kangaroos and bandicoots. When we were there, 3 ducks visited
us every morning looking for tit bits! Also a very quiet pink & grey Galah and a white cockatoo wandered from site to site!
Dislikes: Poor TV reception, seemed to depend on the weather conditions. Did not notice a BBQ, however this is quite a
large park and I may have missed one. I guess the river could be dangerous for small children.
Roads: Satisfactory, although bitumen somewhat narrow.
Date 01/2006. Park Rating 4: suitable for any length stay.

Middleton Beach Holiday Park, Albany
28 Flinders Parade, about 3 km south-east from the town centre along Middleton Road, on Middleton Beach.
Ph: 08 9841 3593 or 1800 644 674. BIG4 member. No dogs.
A well-maintained, attractive park, situated alongside Middleton Beach. The office staff were friendly.
A BIG4 park with high site fees ($32 2A, low season price). Most of the caravan sites have concrete pads, some with shadecloth.
All the tent sites are shadecloth so there are no ugly dead grass areas.
The park has all the features you would expect: large, enclosed, camp kitchen, heated pool, spa, games room, children's play area,
dump point, theatrette, tour booking service, etc.
There are two amenity blocks, both well appointed, with the added touch of fresh flowers by the washbasins. Number one amenity
block has water saving heads, which have a good flow of water, which is hot and strong. The only criticism I would have about
them is that the head is fairly low and the taps fairly high. When you duck your head to get under the shower there is the danger of hitting yourself on the taps.
Number two amenity block, which is the smaller of the two, has full flow heads.
The grounds are kept in immaculate condition. The downside of that, of course, is that for most of the day there are the sounds
of mower, edger, whippersnipper, leaf blower etc.
The park caters strongly for campers so the camp kitchen is in demand for most of the day and evening.
The park, being alongside the beach is long and narrow so the amenity blocks can be a fair walk depending on where you are.
Also there are only a few sites long enough for bigger rigs. At intervals there are walkways through to the beach.
Worth staying a few days, or even longer.

Originally we booked into an ensuite van site but two of our adult kids invited themselves along so we changed the booking
to a cabin two days before arrival, our booking was happily changed. Heated pool & spa open until 9:00 pm, theatre with free
DVD's on application, pool table, table tennis, air hockey, tea coffee facilities in rec room. A group had a rowdy party at
the pool/spa & trashed it, staff evicted them quickly & pool area was cleaned & spa cleaned & refilled by mid morning next
day. Will definitely go back again.
Friendly staff, good staff response to complaints, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities.
Price was as expected, good value for money ($120 A4 per night cabin).
Water pressure is good.
Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, concrete annex slabs,
adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by.
Good laundry, good rec room, good camp kitchen, kiosk.
Quiet, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere, no permanents.
Clean UC gas bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq.
Basic playground in good condition.
Clean heated pool is open to the sun, kid-safe pool area, tables and chairs provided, toddlers catered for.
Suitable for a week or more, suitable for families, well maintained park.
Likes: 50 metres from beach, spotless BBQ heated spa (35 degrees) with towels supplied, free movies in the theatre,
Afternoon tea on Wednesdays
Dislikes: Small park makes it a bit squeezy near the entrance.

during school holidays, free movies at theatre anytime.

Likes: We had an ensuite site, which was practically brand new. The park was clean and the owners really friendly and helpful.
Friends of ours book every year, and I think we will be joining them. This is the nicest park we've stayed at.
Added Touches: They have a heated pool, and heated spa, really clean bbq facilities and they have tongs etc there. Also a big
recreation room with internet access via a PIE terminal, plenty of electronic games, table tennis and a big room with data

No pets allowed. Clean UC gas bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq.
No playground. Clean heated pool is shaded, kid-safe pool area, tables and chairs provided.

Likes: Friendly staff, clean well maintained park. Toilets and showers clean. Good lighting.
Dislikes: Not enough bbq, toilets, showers, we had to line up at peak times especially at the rear of the park. Even though
the park was clean I felt it was expensive, much more expensive than advertised in the BIG4 members book, management claimed it
was a printing error. Site was flooded on arrival due to watering, management provided ground sheet. No play area for kids,
the kids tended to use roads to play.

Report submitted by Gary & Cate, Maryland NSW.
This is definitely not the best park in town as we were led to believe. We were put right down the end of the park
squashed into the tent site area even though we had a caravan. Only one entrance to park and has one narrow road through it.
The park has a very claustrophobic feel to it and we would not stay here again. Our site had lots of grass. Tractor had to
manoeuvre caravan onto site because of tightness. Other sites in park had concrete slabs and appeared to have a little
more room. Heated Pool and spa, recreation room, kids activities during school holidays which seemed to be more of a
free baby sitting service for 3-5 year olds, movies played twice daily, beach frontage. Laundry located a fair distance
from our site. Campers Kitchen and BBQ's. Amenities well maintained and clean. Soap was provided in the main amenities
block, but not the one located at the tent site area. Each time you drove through the park to the exit, you had to
"run the gauntlet" continually dodging kids on bikes and pedestrians not looking where they were walking. There was
no room for the kids to play apart from the road, the pool and spa area were always overcrowded so we never used it
whilst there. During the day you had to leave the annex windows closed as the groundsmen would put the sprinkler
on next to it and everything would get wet. However, he did move the clothes hoist so the towels would not get wet.
The sites were watered continually as soon as one became vacant and sprinklers not turned off until the next group
arrived and had to put their tent up on wet grass. After our week was finished we moved to another park in the town.
We would never stay there again. It was the most expensive park ($46 2A 2C per night powered) and was not worth the
money we paid. A congenial UC bbq area, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. Good playground in good condition.
Dirty pool is open to sun, kid-safe pool area, tables and chairs provided, heated. A well maintained park, park is
considered kid-safe. It was windy at night.
Likes: Beach frontage.
Dislikes: Crowded, expensive, too many unsupervised kids on bikes, only one vehicle entrance to a long and narrow park.
Date 01/2006. Park Rating 3.5: Suitable for few days.

Likes: It was close to the beach, and they allowed dogs on a leash.
Dislikes: They had tents within feet of the dump point.
We were parked at the entrance, which was noisy and disruptive. Vans travelling in groups parking next to us with motors running while one
in the group sorted out things in the office, which was taking about 20 minutes, and the rest of the group stood next to their vehicles talking, which
on the Thursday night of Easter happened until after 11pm and then restarted Good Friday. Needs a barrier to stop entrance to park until site allocation is done.

Bremer Bay Caravan Park, Bremer Bay
Follow Borden Bremer Road into Bremer Bay. The park is on the right hand side before the bay. Ph: 08 9837 4018.
This is a large park made up mostly of what looks like permanent weekender/holiday vans. The current area of tourist sites is
quite small compared to the size of the large park. There a quite a few new sites nearly ready for use which will more than double
the amount of tourist sites. The amenities blocks which were open when we visited were very old and needed replacing. There was
another block that was locked. This I feel will be opened when the new area opens to the public. These amenities look to be newer.
Of the two parks in Bremer Bay this park is closest to the water. All sites are well grassed and none have slabs.
Very friendly staff, no complaints, staff explained park layout and facilities.
Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($22 2A per night powered).

Likes: Sheltered park within walking distance to the beach and estuary for fishing.
Dislikes: At the time of our visit there were only three washing machines and one of them was out of service. There was quite a
queue for the laundry.

Sleepy Hollow is how we see this wonderful little park west from the beautiful town of Bridgetown along Maranup Ford Road.
Lush green grassed bays with two hard based bays. Set in the farm grounds of Maranup Ford farm owned by Melva and Hugh Browne
who have lived on this property all their lives.
A generation farm established by Hugh's grandfather in the late 1800's on the banks of the Blackwood River where Hugh and Melva
have provided canoes for hire to paddle this lovely peaceful spot.
Plenty of areas to walk and animals of the farm type to see along with hundreds of birds among the gardens so lovingly looked after
by Melva.
Not far to services, fuel, doctor, hospital, and general shops of all type at Bridgetown a short 18km drive east.

Likes: Great unpowered sites, with plenty of trees, kids and teens occupied with bouncy pillow and playground, tennis courts, grass volley ball nets,
mini golf. Friendly patrons. Kangaroos visited evenings and early mornings.
Dislikes: Although some powered sites were large, they seemed to cram 2 or 3 vans into one site. Taken away a lot of trees at front of park in favour
of small unshaded "beach front" sites. January holidays and shop shuts at 5pm. Very bad drainage in brand new ablution block and dangerous hot water taps
hard to work out, old ablution blocks have minimal attention left up to patrons to mop and even empty dirty water from buckets, had cleaners but only
changed necessary items like toilet paper. Back section of park was best as in largest shadiest sites but worst facilities.

Esperance Information
Tourist drives with sensational coastal scenery, museums, walks and good shopping.
The coastal scenery is magnificent, the most attractive we'd seen since the Kimberleys. Best drives
we did were east to Cape Le Grand National Park and Lucky Bay and west to Wireless Hill, overlooking the town and harbour and
then along Twilight Beach Road and Great Ocean Drive.
There is a good butcher on Pink Lake Road, near Victoria Street, way outside the shopping centre.
Fishing, Cape Le Grand and Cape Arid National Parks (both have park entry fees) close to Esperance, cruising the islands of the Bay of
Isles, wildlife watching - whales, seals, dolphins, sea eagles, shallow snorkelling and diving, 4WD tours.
Rotary lookout in Doust Street, good photos, see Westwind wind farms, go along the fabulous beach roads to
Twilight Bay and surrounding areas. Do a cruise to the islands and see seals, and in season whales. Walk along each jetty. Good fishing.

Not really a van park, behind the community hall & oval, progress ass.
has put in 8 power points, call in at the shop further into Kendenup pay
$5.00 per night for 2 adults they clean the showers & toilets weekly, so it
is basically up to you to maintain, good water but no taps in camping area.
Hot water by chip heater but plenty wood around, light when you need it. No
neighbours around, one other van while we were there they had been there a
week. The oval & hall is used by the locals every other weekend but no
problems. Mid way between Stirlings & Porongurup's we stayed 3 nights
really enjoyed it, couldn't stay at either the Porongurup or Mt Barker parks
as my wife became allergic to the Marri trees both parks were full of them
in bloom. This made an ideal alternative, plenty of shady trees not a Marri
in site. Have met people that stayed here 6 weeks.

Peaceful Bay Caravan Park, Peaceful Bay
Situated between Walpole & Denmark, near the Valley Of The Giants. Turn off well signed at Bow Bridge, then 9k's towards the coast.
Ph: 08 9840 8060. Dogs on leash.
Good stop over if visiting the "Valley of the Giants" or if you like fishing. More a family/seniors park. Nearest liquor outlet
was some 30k's away. You have to want to visit as the road goes nowhere else. Very popular with dog owners. No lights around the
park except at the ablution blocks, so take a torch with you. It was so quiet that Kangaroos grazed on the grass at night. We did
not look at or really notice on site vans, but believe that new managers/owners have taken over. We found the park was well run and
very popular. The amenities were cleaned before 7am each day, and spot cleaned during the day. It is the real get away and relax type of place.

Pemberton Caravan Park, Pemberton
Pump Hill Road, just 700 m west of town centre, turn off by the sports complex on main road. Ph: 08 9776 1300. No pets allowed.
An attractive looking park, lots of trees and green grass. Price a bit higher than usual ($28 per night 2A).
The entry to the park, and office, is about 200 metres from the park proper.
As we have a 25ft Heritage we were allocated a site in the big rigs area, away from the main body of the park.
Where we were, the sites were all grass and very big.
The area where most sites were located looked very crowded, there were a lot of trees and, it appeared, that the
grass surface was being covered with mulch. (Unfortunately, during our stay, it was so cold and wet that we didn’t investigate fully.) Most sites also have a wood-fired
BBQ/fireplace.
There are three amenity blocks. The one we used was an unattractive red brick building. The inside was dull and
gloomy and there were missing tiles on the floor but the ‘old-fashioned’ looking showers flowed hot and strong.
Wonderful in the cold, wet conditions!
A large, new-looking, camp kitchen/BBQ area was in the middle of the park but there was no pool. The free public
pool, being a blocked off part of the river, was only a 100 metres from the park entry.
Staff were friendly and helpful.

Likes: I have always liked this park. Central to so many places. Peaceful and quiet. Wonderful birdlife in a tranquil setting.
Dislikes: Gets a bit wet underfoot in winter.
Added Touches: Fixed and portable open fire barbecues scattered around the sites. Great for the cold evening BBQ
Local Information: Great place for those who enjoy the beauty of the forests in the national parks. Freshwater trout (in
season) and perch fishing all throughout the region. Had a great trout dinner delivered to our door from the local trout farm.
Roads: Sealed dual carriageway all the way. Windy and hilly through the forests.

wood fire at points around the park. Camp kitchen is very basic.

Porongorup Range Tourist Park, Porongorup
A few kms west of the Chester Pass Road on the Porongorup Mt Barker Road, approximately 40 km north
of Albany, about 32 kms east of Mount Barker. Ph: 08 9853 1057.
This is a small but delightful bush park in a restful setting. The owners have gone out of their way to make their
guests comfortable. Whilst we were there, the owners wandered around the park on a daily basis to chat with their guests.
Amenities are excellent. The park provides an excellent base for visiting Albany and surrounds.
Friendly management, management responsive to comments, management was helpful.
Very good value for money.
Very good amenities, adequate number to cater for tourists, close to sites, were clean, were in good condition, water pressure
was okay, there was adequate hot water.
Average sites, adequate number of tourist sites, drive-through sites were available.
Laundry, rec room, dump point.
Very good park atmosphere, family-friendly park.

Quininup Eco Tourist Park, Quininup
Lot 11, Wheatley Coast Road. Ph: 08 9773 1329. Pets at manager's discretion. Pets must be under control as kangaroos visit the
site every day and must not be disturbed.
Manager's name is Pam & Vern.
We stayed here for 4 weeks as my husband worked on the nearby Quinninup Dam. Our main problem with the park was the
cleanliness of the bathrooms. During the 4 weeks they were only "cleaned" twice - during the 1st & 4th weeks so were
not cleaned for 3 weeks! We complained to the caretaker (Jeremy) but the bathroom didn't get cleaned until nearly a week later.
Even after they were "cleaned" the floors were still dirty & we constantly had to ask for the toilet paper to be refilled.
I actually cleaned the toilets & shower cubicles with disinfectant when we first arrived just for our own personal comfort.
A dirty cake of soap, which had been in a shower cubicle when we first arrived, was provided to wash hands (we didn't use it).
Hot water was fine in the women's bathroom but constantly changed from hot to cold etc in the men's.
Ventilation was extremely poor & after a shower the bathroom was covered in steam - sometimes making the
toilet paper damp. Pam is very friendly & the resident kangaroos were great for the kids.
Friendly staff, bad staff response to complaints.
Price was higher than expected, reasonable value for money ($185 2A 2C per week, powered, off-peak season).
Found it weird that the weekly price was more expensive than the per night price x 7. Price was $15 per night
(2A) but $115 per week (an extra $10) plus $70 per week for 2 children, which I thought was a little expensive.
Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to most sites, were dirty, condition is reasonable.
Some unlevel sites, poor night lighting, no sites with concrete annex slabs, no sites are shaded,
drive-through sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by.
No rec room, late checkout allowed (past noon), dump point.
Peaceful, open & roomy park, a few permanents.
Dirty gas bbq (free), dismal bbq area atmosphere.
Good playground in average condition.
No pool.
Likes: The wildlife that visited the park were great - kangaroos, kookaburras, magpies, rosellas.
Dislikes: The dirty bathrooms & the fact they were cleaned only rarely.
Added Touches: Camp fires are allowed.
Local Information: The Q-Mart next door has been closed since March 2008 so the Tavern now has basic foods etc.
Tavern meals apparently used to be great but the quality has really gone downhill.

90km northwest of Walpole. Turn right off South West Highway 90km north-west of Walpole (signposted), 30km south-east of Manjimup.
This is a wonderful 'no frills' caravan park - very natural with no neat rows of side-by-side vans. More like a big paddock.
Just park anywhere near a water/power outlet. Ablutions are 5-star (almost new) with floor to ceiling tiling, modern hand basins,
paper towel, etc. A separate wheelchair facility is located in the laundry.
Friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice, staff helped us at the site, staff explained park layout and facilities.
Price was lower than expected, very good value for money ($15 2A per night powered).
Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is very good, water
pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, dry change area, paper towels/dryer provided, exhaust fans/good ventilation,
disabled facilities.
Adequate number of tourist sites, some unlevel sites, poor night lighting, large sites, drive-through sites, adequate taps close
by, adequate sullage close by.
Good laundry, no rec room, late checkout allowed (up to noon), disabled facilities, dump point, van parking.
Peaceful, open & roomy park, not enough shade, family/friendly atmosphere, no permanents.
Clean gas bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere. Basic playground in average condition. No pool.
Suitable for month or longer, suitable for families, well maintained park.
Likes: We loved the quiet, relaxed atmosphere and the fact that there was no long list of "Must Not Do's". It is within easy
travelling distance to several popular tourist spots but it's lovely to come back in the evening to the peace and quiet of this
lovely off-the-beaten-track location.
Dislikes: The only comment (not criticism) would be that it may be an advantage to make ALL of the sites level as some of the
sites require wheels blocked up.
Parking: Plenty of room.
Added Touches: There are no free sausage sizzles, etc. That's one of the things we liked about the place - guests are left to
do their own thing without feeling obliged to be organised by the owner or other visitors. The environment is such that guests mix
freely while enjoying the surroundings.
Local Information: The tavern on the next lot has excellent counter meals. There is a small corner shop near the park but
opening times are erratic and selection of goods basic. Manjimup is about 20min drive away and has good shopping facilities.
Walpole (Valley of the Giants, Tree Top Walk) is about an hour's drive away. Pemberton (very popular tourist spot) is a 15min
drive away. Excellent fishing at Windy Harbour and Salmon Beach, and Karri Lake and Warren River are a short walk away.
Roads: Bitumen all the way.

Ravensthorpe Caravan Park, Ravensthorpe
293 kms east of Albany, 185 kms west of Esperance, on the Esperance road, 600m east of town. Ph: 08 9838 1050.
The previous report by Toned-F gives a good description of the park, however I would just add to that a
warning for those with children or are offended by crudity. In the garden outside the office are nude
Barbie and Kenny dolls in various sexual poses, some have had synthetic pubic hair and genitalia
added. There is offbeat art in the main area of the park including the use of old toilet bowls for garden
planters and other household items. The old toilet/shower block had a bobtail skink and frogs inside.
Being a gravel base park, it was very dusty when vehicles drove past. There are two roads in and out
and one of them requires some work to the bumps and dips in it, the main entry one is fine. An open
water sump is between the road and the park, although the water appeared clean at a distance (storm
water?)Some permanents live there either in caravans or cabins, although they mostly appeared
employed somewhere by their working dress and leaving/returning times, although they were very quiet
and did not create any noise that I was aware of. As per the previous report, the amenities were spotless
and well serviced (toilet paper etc). I would have to say that this park was an experience and worth a
visit just for this alone. It is the only park in town and and is near the three way junction roughly at the
half way point between Albany and Esperance, with a bitumen road going off at a T junction north to
Lake King and the inner wheatbelt towns.

Well signposted, just off the main street at the eastern end of town.
This park looks more like a wayside bush stop excepting it has power points and water taps. The ground is uneven and it is
difficult to work out where the actual sites are (the notice on the office door tells you to find a spot and catch up later).
There are two amenities blocks, an old one, which has a mural painted on the outside walls and is surrounded by, what I think
is classed as, 'folk art'. Inside there are hanging plants, plants in pots etc so it has a sort of 'greenhouse' feel. Showers
in this block are very small and you have to stand in the actual shower base to get dressed. Heads are water-savers and, although
hot, the flow is weak. I understand this block is to be demolished.
The other block is a fairly modern, relocatable with cubicles containing a shower, washbasin and WC in each. This building has
been connected, via a new roof, to a new laundry.
The shower cubicles have brightly patterned curtains and the water flow is hot and strong.
There is a 'rustic' camp kitchen/barbecue area, which has all the usual bits and pieces: gas barbecue, gas rings, fridge, sink,
benches, TV etc. There are a few permanent looking vans scattered about and I think the idea is to relocate them all into
one area at the back of the park where some have already been moved to.
The owners were away during our visit but the caretaker was friendly and helpful. Suitable for a couple of days at least.
Handy to Fitzgerald River National Park, which is well worth visiting.

Stirling Range Retreat, Stirling Range
Also known as Stirling Range Eco Park. 400 kms south-east of Perth; approx 80 kms north of Albany and 14 kms south of Borden. The entrance is on Chester
Pass Road and is just past the northern boundary of Stirling Range National Park (about 250m north of the Bluff Knoll Road turn).
Ph: 08 9827 9229. No animals at all. As townships are several kms away, it is necessary to take your own provisions.
Manager's name is Tony & Ayleen Sands.
The Retreat is in a rain shadow area because of the nearby Stirling Range and during our stay the laundry was closed to help conserve water - it has been a
dry few years out that way. There is minimal to nil grass as no water is expended to grow any. The property was up for sale but this did not impact of the
service or facilities provided. If you like to walk and stroll through hills and small mountains then this is the place to base yourself from as there are
many walks / trails - and quite a few are around the 2 to 4 hour duration depending on your level of fitness. If you are into terrestrial orchids and
wildflowers then this is the place to base yourself from (in season) - to go out and find those specific to the Stirling Range area.
Powered sites available; some unpowered van and/or camping sites ($12 per person); plus different styles and levels of park cabins or chalets ($70 to $140);
only 2 or 3 on site vans available ($46); dorm style accom (from $30 per person). TV reception - by satellite dish; minimal to nil mobile phone coverage (
Telstra 3G) - although we got reception on top of Mt Trio after a 2+ hour walk up to the top. Office has Internet available (at a cost) and a pay telephone
is near the office also.
Friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities.
Price was as expected, good value for money ($26 2A per night powered).
Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, cleanliness was average, condition is reasonable, water pressure is
good, there was adequate hot water, exhaust fans/good ventilation.
Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by.
Basic laundry, no rec room, good camp kitchen.
Quiet, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere, no permanents.
Clean gas bbq, congenial bbq area atmosphere.
Basic playground in average condition.
Clean pool is open to the sun, toddlers catered for.
Suitable for a week or more, suitable for families, well maintained park.
Dislikes: Ground was a bit dry and a little dusty due to limited water and minimal rainfall in the region - but nothing that was a big problem; it is
really just the way it is in that region.
Local Information: Owners offer guided tours (at a cost) covering orchids and wildflowers of the Stirling Ranges (1st Sept to 31st Oct); plus dusk
Birdwalk (mid Sept to 31st Oct); plus Hidden Treasure Nature tour (Nov to Aug) covering the mallee habitat and wildlife. If you want to go trekking for
more than a day, they also have a service (at a cost) to drop you off and pick you up - there are 2 and 3 day treks / walks that people do. Near the
Retreat is the Bluff Knoll Cafe just a short stroll away - fairly decent coffee can be had plus lunch; also has small range of kiosk type items for sale;
dinner on some evenings. In the nearby National Park there are many opportunities to walk up many of the 'mountains' including the 2nd highest in WA -
Bluff Knoll (a 4-6 hour trek). The Porongorups (another small mountain range) is about 35kms to the south, and this is on the way to the town of Mt
Barker (70+kms from the Retreat). There are a number of vineyards / wineries in that area - some of which are open for cellar door sales.

access. Self registration ($10). Ranger on duty. National park entry fee applies.
UPDATED REPORT NEEDED
There are two campgrounds, both accessed after passing the
road to the Ranger's house. The first (NORTH) is signposted "Inlet" and the second (SOUTH) continues on and is signposted
"Stokes Inlet". Both have individual, secluded camp sites on a one-way road, each with a picnic table.
No fires allowed. Free undercover BBQs with tables - South campground has some sites with their own
undercover BBQs (but we did not know this till the next day). Bush toilets and washing water (not suitable for
drinking). Boat access to the inlet for small boats from both campgrounds. Suitable for caravans. Lack of drinking water.
North Campground Rating 2; South Campground Rating 3: Liked the individual sites but would have

About a kilometre from the highway this is a bush park with water, power and sullage.
Most sites are large, mainly level and many separated from neighbouring sites by shrubs, trees and ground plants.
Most sites also have a wood-fired BBQ/fireplace. There is no grass, bitumen or concrete; the sites are mulched and the roadways gravel.
One of the quietest parks we have ever been in. It was almost full during our stay but, because of the lack of hard surface,
it was very quiet. No traffic, no aircraft, no trucks, no trains, no yapping dogs. The noisiest things were the birds.
There are three amenity blocks, each fairly old but well maintained and clean. There is a small playground but no pool.
