Bacchus Marsh Caravan Park, Bacchus Marsh
Situated in Main Street, 1km west of the town centre. Ph: 03 5367 2775. Family Parks member.
Manager's name is Peter & Christine Crotty. Very nice park to stay a few days or a week. Is ideal if visiting Tassie as the trip to the Spirit of Tasmania is all by freeway from here. 53 Km to Melbourne, is also close to Geelong and Ballarat as well as local attractions within the local vicinity. Well known for it's fruit and vegetable growing area as well as road side stalls selling all sorts of fruits and vegetables. Very friendly staff, no complaints, staff offered tourist advice, van parking assistance provided by staff, staff helped us at the site, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, good value for money ($25 2A per night powered). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, paper towels/dryer provided, exhaust fans/good ventilation. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by. Good laundry, late checkout allowed (up to noon), good camp kitchen, secure entry, van parking. Peaceful, open and roomy, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere. Pets at manager's discretion. Clean UC electric bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. Good playground in good condition. Suitable for a week or more, well maintained park, park is considered kid-safe.
Likes: The park is set in a very quiet part of town, there is a 7-11 next door selling petrol, papers etc.
Dislikes: Not much grass around, account of the drought but like every else they do the best they can.
Parking: They have a dedicated parking space on eastern side of entrance which also is the 2nd entrance you can use.

Blue Gums Residential Park, Beaconsfield
Turn south from Princes Highway into Blunt Road at first traffic lights west of Beaconsfield turnoff (do not go into Beaconsfield itself). Ph: 03 9707 2753.
Listed as a Caravan Park in most directories but appears to be converting to a permanent residential park. Also reflected in name difference from directories. Park is mainly permanently occupied cabins with few powered sites remaining. Amenities are under utilised and are kept clean and in good repair. Management is friendly and helpful. Sites are quite large but need thought to access. It is unlikely that we will ever be in Beaconsfield again but in any case we doubt that the park will remain open for vans for much longer. However it did meet a need for us at the time.

BIG4 Ashley Gardens Holiday Village, Braybrook
129 Ashley Street, 150m south of Western Highway (Ballarat Road), 7 kms west of CBD. Coming from Geelong, take the Western Ring Road (M80) and turn onto Ballarat Road (8) and head towards the city. You will see the signs to the caravan park as you get closer. Ph: 03 9318 6886 or 1800 061 444. BIG4 member. No pets.
A large park with all levels of accommodation. Everything is clean and well laid out. The park has everything one may want - but way in excess of what one really needs. Staff are efficient but impersonal. More concerned about process than customer. Well sited for travellers to Tasmania. It has a free parking area for vans for time between checkout and time to depart for check-in at ferry. We think the park in generally overpriced and certainly for what we (and others also travelling to Tasmania) wanted, an overnight stop before catching ferry, not particularly good value. If doing trip to Tasmania again would stop at a town further out and time the run in. Average management. Poor value for money. Good amenities, adequate number to cater for tourists, close to sites, were clean, were in good condition, water pressure was okay, there was adequate hot water. Good sites, drive-through sites were available.

Large sites with some drive-through sites that have a bitumen base that are close to amenities. Amenities are clean and modern with piped music and also have heated floors. Soap and hand dryers provided. Camp kitchen and rec room. Great playground in good condition. Friendly office staff that offered tourist advice and showed you to site. Park located 9km to Melbourne CBD. Public transport located directly outside the park. Park is next door to a shopping centre that has a Safeway supermarket, Spotlight and other speciality stores. Friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice, staff helped us at the site, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was higher than expected, but reasonable value for money ($43.20 2A 2C per night powered with BIG4 discount). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to all sites, were clean, condition is very good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, paper towels/dryer provided. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by, good rec room. Quiet, open & roomy park, not enough shade, family/friendly atmosphere, no permanents. No pets allowed. Excellent playground in good condition. Clean pool is shaded, kid-safe pool area, tables and chairs provided. Suitable for overnighter. A well maintained park, park is considered kid-safe.
Likes: Easy to get to when you don't know the city. Located within walking distance to shops. Public transport directly out the front of park.
Dislikes: Very expensive for a powered site.
Date 04/2006. Park Rating 4: Suitable for any length stay.

You'll need a map! Ideal when going to Tasmania. A good park, although dear, but to be expected in a city location. Area to leave caravan for those not taking it to Tasmania. Cabins. It basically catered for one day stays for people going to and from Tasmania. Very friendly staff, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was higher than expected, reasonable value for money ($32 2A per night powered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to all sites, were clean, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Good laundry, dump point. Quiet, claustrophobic park. Suitable for overnighter. A well maintained park.
Likes: Helpful staff who are used to advising people catch the ferry to Tasmania. Staff escort you to the booked site. Good facilities.
Dislikes: Needed to book. Expensive.
Parking: Parking area while booking in outside the barrier.
Added Touches: Advice on how to get into into central city by bus, and how to get to the ferry (Tasmania).
Local Information: Grocery shop next door - walked and brought shopping back to caravan in the trolley.

Kingston Lodge Caravan Park, Carrum Downs
1165 Frankston/Dandenong Road. 40 kms south-east of Melbourne. Travelling from Frankston towards Dandenong on Frankston-Dandenong road 6km from Frankston on right hand side of road. Ph: 03 9782 1292 or 1800 337 045. Beston Park Group. Dogs on leash.
Manager's name is Marg & Linden (assistant managers) As this park is one of only four parks with in 40km of Melbourne that is dog friendly (not anti pets like most are) I must say I was very happy the way they looked after us even if they were full. They were very helpful and still managed to fit us in for 5 days. As there is council land at the back, the park has the authority to let the people take there pets out there; there is a lake and oval and plenty of room to let the pets go free. $5 deposit for key to gate also there is a $30 deposit for amenity keys and security barrier tag. Very friendly staff, good staff response to complaints, staff offered tourist advice, van parking assistance provided by staff, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, good value for money ($28 2A per night powered - $120 for 5 days). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is very good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, dry change area, paper towels/dryer provided. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, concrete annex slabs, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Good laundry, kiosk, secure entry. Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere. Clean UC gas bbq (pay). Clean pool is shaded, kid-safe pool area. Suitable for a week or more, well maintained park.
Likes: Most people in the park were friendly and the shop had most things in stock, also payments for tolls for tunnel, also take away food.
Parking: Parking in font of office to book in.
Added Touches: Bus at front of park.
Local Information: There are plenty of markets at weekends, Frankston- Dandenong & Caribbean Gardens markets (Wed-Sun), 6km to the beach, also travelling from Mt Gambier or Great Ocean Road via Geelong and ferry it is only 77km from Sorrento.
Roads: All good roads.

Chelsea Gardens Caravan Park, Chelsea
100 Broadway, 3 kms east of post office. Ph: 03 9772 2485. Represented in the RACQ Tourist Park guide with 188 sites, however 176 of these sites are occupied by cabins or permanent vans. Only 6 sites for transit customers in the park. The current brochure put out by the management describes the facility as "Tourist-Residential Park and Apartments" - this is a more appropriate description.

South East Holiday Village, Chelsea Heights
Formerly called the Blue Gum Caravan Park. 29 Wells Road, 250 metres east of Springvale Road. Ph: 03 9772 8436. Family Parks member.
Stayed 2 nights $20.00 p/n powered site. We had previously stayed in this park last year, and decided to make a return trip. We noticed that quite a few of the "permanent" houses and cabins had been removed and were disappointed to find that part of this park had been sold to make way for a large shopping centre. Amenities were still the same clean standard as previously. Caravan sites were large and level, ours had excellent gravel, was drive-through with no shade. We again had an excellent meal at the pub, which is within walking distance.

Melbourne BIG4 Holiday Park, Coburg
9ks almost directly north of Melbourne CBD via Nicholson Street then Elizabeth Street. Turn north off Bell Street into Elizabeth Street and follow it to the end (1km), turn left at Pentridge. Ph: 03 9354 3533 or 1800 802 678. BIG4 member.
This is not a 5 star resort. Some sites were cramped and my awning was touching the tree on one side and van was over as far as possible. Other sites were great. Only 4 clothes lines (should've had at least 5 for a 5 star) and when asked if there were any more I was told to use the dryer and pay money. Excellent place to visit Melbourne CBD though as transport at the door. Good management, management was helpful. Poor value for money. Average amenities, adequate number to cater for tourists, close to sites, were in good condition, water pressure was okay, there was adequate hot water. Average sites, sites were level, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Laundry, security entry to park, van parking by management. Park atmosphere was okay, quiet. Good playground, condition okay. Suitable for a few days, the park can be considered kid-safe.
Likes: Location to Melbourne CBD
Dislikes: A little too cramped. Was forced to pay for clothes dryer as insufficient clothes lines.
Parking: Might have to park on the narrow street.
Local Information: 9 km from CBD. Bus at door and you can purchase a day ticket at office for $6.50 which entitles you all travel, trams, trains and buses, all day.

Manager's name is Des and Margaret Watts. Outrageous charges at $45 per night (2A) for a minute patch of mud. We booked specifically asking for two sites adjacent to each other, explained van sizes etc. and were then shown to two sites (dirt bowls more like) diagonally opposite each other with the adjacent site unoccupied. When asked if we could change to adjacent we were told sorry - it is booked. The actual sites we were on were totally devoid of grass (or even weeds) despite others being very green, and were raked dust and dirt which turned to a bog when it inevitably rained. One was so small that we couldn't even open the awning without it hanging over some poor campers next to us. Having got that off my chest the park is well equipped, amenities were spotless, management was friendly and helpful (apart from changing sites). I guess if you have to stay in a capital city this is the best you can expect, but it really was a rip off. Our experience rates it as a 0 but to be fair other sites looked better. What really annoyed me was booking ahead, explaining size of both rigs, asking and being promised adjacent sites and then given the exact opposite. If you do go please ask to see your site first as others have obviously found it better than us.

I liked the handy location to CBD and little else. It is the closest van park to the city at 9kms. We would not stay here again unless the actual city was again our daily destination. We would travel a bit further and stay a regional park next time. Front office is not welcoming and its almost a burden to trouble some of the staff with even simple enquiries. Treatment of some foreign tourists was appalling. A short course in front of house hospitality training would do wonders for PR for this place. I am amazed BIG4 can rate it as a 5 star. Tight unlevel sites and narrow roads, muddy sites after minimal rain, lack of front parking for rigs and blocked boom gates on 4 occasions was office staff fault, they should respond better to an obvious bottleneck and open another entrance or the exit gate at times like this (yes the "back fence" is easily opened as we found out during the fierce storm which knocked over the transformer and blacked out the park for the day, not the parks fault at all and they became extra helpful at this time which was good to see). A cleaning lady was sent to tell us to vacate the park 5 days before we were due to check out, again not so much as a sorry when my wife went to enquire as to how they made that clanger. Access to Melbourne city and a 5 star rating from BIG4 chain were main reasons for paying $905 for our decidedly underwhelming stay. I would not rate this park as highly as other 4 & 5 star parks we have used. Prices are at the steep end as you would expect being so close to a major capital city. Unfriendly staff, average staff response to complaints. Price was much higher than expected, poor value for money ($455 2A 2C per week powered). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to only some sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was inadequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, some unlevel sites, good night lighting, small sites, hard to negotiate into site, poor water quality, adequate taps close by. Good laundry, good rec room, dump point, secure entry, van parking. Quiet, claustrophobic park, too much shade, no permanents. Clean UC electric bbq (free), dismal bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. Excellent playground in good condition. Dirty pool is open to sun, pool area not considered kid-safe, tables and chairs provided, toddlers catered for. Suitable for few days.
Likes: Location to the city, extra facilities expected in a so called 5 star park, good laundry, rec room, pool when clean, BBQ's when clean, bias is towards cabins which is to be expected in a city park.
Dislikes: Front office trying to vacate our site 5 days before we were due to check out, excessive noise from large tour groups using cabins and group camping sites on 4 nights out of 14, our site flooded with mud after only a small shower of rain, drainage was inadequate, unkempt and very poor quality ensuite (rotted door, handle ready to fall off, water damaged inside, loose missing tiles, mouldy smelling shower curtain, vanity door hinges missing, leaky taps), fall out from bats, birds and trees was excessive, no hot water one morning, dirty pool for 3 days of our 14 day stay, not heated as stated. Our expectations are higher than this park can offer but others we spoke to were very satisfied, do not be put off by our report, it just did not suit us compared to other 4/5 star parks we have stayed at.
Parking: One rig blocks boom gate and then you need to wait while they check in. Happened 4 times but you could be lucky and not strike this at all.
Local Information: Parking for 4 people in city is reasonably priced at $12 weekdays (in before 10am and out after 3pm) or $8 to $10 for all day weekend. Cheaper maybe easier to go by tram, train or bus if only 2 people with concessions.
Roads: Easy city driving if you follow their advice. No problems at all.

Manager's name is The Watts Family. Come in Via the Western Ring Route onto Bell Street then into Elizabeth Street. Large sign, can't miss it. Staff were extremely friendly, showed us to site and helped with parking. Very helpful with tourist advice. We had ensuite site that was very large ,plenty of shade, concrete slab for van and annexe, driveway for car (site # 23). Ensuite is big and spotlessly clean, provided soap, shampoo and conditioner! Site is opposite cabins and away from amenities block and rec room. Excellent value for money $33.00 per night with BIG4 discount. $20 refundable fee for entry key.
Likes: Close to CBD. Pool and big spa.
Dislike: Minor dislike, park is directly under flight path of planes to airport.

Manager Des & Margaret Watts. Unfriendly staff, staff helped us at the site, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was much higher than expected, poor value for money ($55 A1 C unpowered) (suggest possible users check this price: ed). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, cleanliness was average, condition is good, there was adequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, small sites, concrete annex slabs, drive-through sites. Good laundry, good rec room, good camp kitchen. Quiet, claustrophobic park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere. Good playground in good condition. Clean pool is open to sun. Suitable for families, well maintained park
Likes: lots of grass, well watered, newish facilities
Dislikes: exorbitant rates for unpowered sites. Camp kitchen, pool, and TV room closed early. Toilet/shower block glorified huts with little space. Noisy if your site is nearby. Office hours pretty limited.
Parking: lots of parking for vehicles, but perhaps not vans.
Added Touches: nice TV room - pity they are so keen to close it early.

This is a very well maintained park, is very quiet and peaceful. Staff were helpful. Average staff friendliness, good staff response to complaints, staff offered tourist advice. Price was higher than expected, good value for money ($50.00 2A 2C) Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to all sites, were clean, condition is very good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, separate bathroom, soap provided, paper towels/dryer provided, disabled facilities. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, concrete annex slabs, hard to negotiate into site, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Good laundry, good rec room, good camp kitchen. Peaceful, claustrophobic park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere. Clean free gas bbq, congenial UC bbq area, bbq area lighting, seating provided. Good playground in good condition. Clean pool is shaded, kid-safe pool area, tables and chairs provided, heated, toddlers catered for. Suitable for families, well maintained park, park is considered kid-safe.
Likes: Our sites were very close to the pool, bathrooms, rec room and very tidy.
Dislikes: being so close to the rec room, had a ramp which people would run up early in the morning and late at night which was very loud. The roads were very narrow.
Local Information: The caravan park were very helpful with information. Public Transport stops just outside the caravan park. Aquarium was fantastic, the Crown Casino Christmas display was great and the water fountain outside the on the Southbank was a nice to sit and watch Melbourne at work. Elizabeth markets were great.

Apollo Gardens Caravan Park, Craigieburn
284-290 Hume Highway, about 20 km out of Melbourne. Heading to Melbourne it is on the left hand side, handing from Melbourne you can do a u turn just after the park. Easy drive in, but watch for buses on road! Ph: 03 9305 5656 or 1800 886 352. Top Tourist member. Pets are welcome at management discretion.
Stayed 7 nights, powered site $222.30 with Top Tourist discount. Secure entry. We had previously stayed here last year and decided to stay again because staff were friendly and facilities very clean. Pets welcome. ("Gorgeous", our little geriatric dog, got a welcome smacko on arrival), park is quiet, clean, and all facilities are spotless. We were allocated Site no 80, at the end of the park where everyone with dogs is located. Moveable (but heavy) wire cages for dogs are located around sites. All sites in this area are ensuite sites. Our level site had concrete slab/gravel and grass with power, water and sullage. There was a large open area near the dog sites where you could take your pet for a walk. Lots of cabins throughout the park but all neat and tidy. A few long stay caravans located behind our site, but all were tidy. Clothes lines located near our sites and this was very handy because the laundry was quite a distance away. No problem for me as we have our own washing machine. Herb garden for guests' use located near the laundry. Lovely swimming pool, camp kitchen and recreation room. This is a lovely park with easy access to the city. Craigieburn shopping centre is a short drive away. We would stay here again as this park has everything that we require – is quiet, friendly, and most importantly is spotless.

This park is good in relation to location to Melbourne, and there is not many caravan parks that accept dogs in capital cities. Friendly staff. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($30 2A per night powered). Amenities were clean, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, large sites, concrete annex slabs, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Good laundry, secure entry. Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere. Dogs on leash. Suitable for a week or more, well maintained park.
Likes: Opposite the dog ensuite site area there is a huge off leash area a few acres, which the dogs love. Also every 2nd site also had a small secure run. The sites are quite large and long so long vans should have no problem. There is also grass around each site as well as a concrete slab.
Dislikes: The ensuite dog friendly sites are slightly more expensive than other sites, other than that, I keep staying at this park. Some sites are a fair distance from the laundry that we had to drive there to do our washing.
Parking: Pull aside to check in.
Local Information: It is only about 20 km from Melbourne, there is a bit to see, walking around Fitzroy Gardens was nice, as dogs are allowed on lead. There is a nice walk around Lake Albert, Brighton. There are many places that dogs area allowed including Queen Victoria markets (excluding food area).
Roads: Main city, road are fine, wish Sydney took note as the peak hour traffic was no where near as bad as Sydney.

Manager Stephen and Sharon Lawler. We have stayed at this park on numerous occasions over the past 6 years, mostly on powered sites, but twice in a cabin. Now more cabins than before. The new amenities for caravan sites, while quite pleasant and in the form of self contained shower/toilet units in a block, there are only 3 to service what sites there are, and when busy this could be a problem. Access to the amenities is across a quite boggy grassed area, that seems to be forever wet. Prices for van sites are not in accordance with those shown on their website, and the park has a sliding scale of charges based on the number of days staying. Base rate starts at $32 at the time we stayed there, which was classified as a shoulder period. There had been a price increase of $5 a day (from $27 to $32) since the time we last stayed there in May, almost 20%. We will try a different park next time we are in Melbourne. Average staff friendliness, average staff response to complaints. Price was higher than expected, reasonable value for money ($32 2A per night). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to only some sites, were clean, condition is very good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, exhaust fans/good ventilation, disabled facilities. Inadequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, drive-through sites, hard to negotiate into site, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Good laundry, basic rec room, good camp kitchen, disabled facilities, dump point, secure entry, van parking. Quiet, claustrophobic park, plenty of shade. Pets at manager's discretion in specified area only. Clean electric, BBQ but in dismal area, bbq area lit. Good playground in good condition. Clean pool is shaded, kid-safe pool area, tables and chairs provided, heated.
Likes: Not a lot. The only thing it has going for it really, is its reasonable central location to move about Melbourne. Most of the caravanners I spoke to, were either there going to Tasmania, waiting to pick up a new van, or getting their caravan repaired.
Dislikes: Wet approach to amenities. High price.
Parking: Bay provided.

BIG4 Dandenong Tourist Park, Dandenong
(Formerly Twin-Bridge Tourist Park). 370 Frankston-Dandenong Road, Dandenong South. Turn south off South Eastern Freeway or Princess Highway just east of Dandenong. 4 km south of Dandenong, 35 km south-east of Melbourne city & 7 km from beaches. Travelling towards Dandenong the park is on the left hand side. Ph: 03 9706 5492 or 1800 648 346. BIG4 member. No pets allowed.
This is a smallish park on the main road but in a rural setting. The park is well placed for taking the train up to Melbourne (the bus to the station stops right outside the park). Also it is only a little over 30km from the Dandenong Ranges and the Mornington Peninsular is easy accessible from here. The price we paid per night was not cheap but it was a long weekend in school holidays. Very friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($32 2A per night powered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to all sites, were clean, condition is very good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, dry change area, paper towels/dryer provided, exhaust fans/good ventilation. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, concrete annex slabs, hard to negotiate into site, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Good laundry, good rec room. Peaceful, plenty of shade. Basic playground in poor condition. No pool. Suitable for few days, well maintained park.
Likes: The amenities blocks are very well cleaned and in excellent condition. The slabs are big enough to park your caravan and you car on.
Dislikes: Some sites are hard to negotiate as there are trees on the boundary between sites and you have to back tight around them to position on the slab correctly.
Parking: The park entrance is off the main road on Coleman Road. There is plenty of space to park in Coleman Road if the drive in the park is full.

Ponderosa Caravan Park, Dromana
UPDATED REPORT NEEDED

This has about 200 permanent vans and permanent residents, with a few cabins and about 3 tourist caravan sites (only 1 will concrete slab). We stayed here 2 nights, just to try out our new van. Very friendly owner who helped us reverse our van in pouring rain at 9 pm. Speed limit is strictly enforced, as is dogs being on leads - you can't even walk your dog in the park, it has to be taken out of the park for exercise. Permanent residents were friendly, and had their own mini-party on the central lawn area on Saturday. 2 amenity blocks which would cope in peak times as most permanent vans had their own showers and toilets. The central amenity was much older than the other and had no separate area in the showers whatsoever, so clothes got wet if you're not extra careful. 2 laundries, open to the outside. Indoor heated pool that seemed to be locked most of the time. Very nice free UC bbq area with seating and lighting. About 1 km from the beach. Next to the freeway, but we heard very little noise (I didn't want to go to this park when I saw the location in the Melways, but SWAMBO talked me into, and I was surprised to find the proximity of the freeway not a problem, and I'm picky). Basic playground. Kid safe and friendly.

Likes: We stayed in a cabin, second time here and love the location, not far from the new Eastlink Freeway and yet you would think you were in the middle of the bush - you are. Its very quiet, peaceful and not at all like a city park.

Decided to stay here when we needed to visit a nearby caravan manufacturer and so sent an email prior leaving Sydney. The fact that I received no reply should have raised a warning flag. On arrival we asked for a powered tent site as we have a tent trailer. Madam suggested a particular site, then appeared to have doubts, a quick referral to someone out the back bought a gentleman who showed me the "camping area" which was uneven, waterlogged and swampy in appearance. Due to it being late in the day I picked the best looking spot in the "evacuation area" and received approval to set up. The park as previously described was slanted towards permanents but it appeared that new management were endeavouring to attract a tourist clientele. I give them a tick for trying but could not award a tick for success. The park was badly lit. The amenities block although having good water pressure and excellent hot water was dirty with spider webs descending, soap scum on the shower walls, badly stained urinals and toilet bowls. We checked in on Sunday and on leaving on Thursday the waste bin in the men's amenities, complete with the discarded soiled underpants had still not been emptied. The camp kitchen was barely adequate, we noted that a cleaning check list on the wall, which had not been filled in for a couple of days. However on the Wednesday night the missing entries had been ticked and signed, however the refrigerator ticked off as having been cleaned was still in the condition found on the Sunday we checked in, the fact that cooking oil/fat splattered on the walls tiles had not been cleaned off was also noted. I have no doubt that the new owner/managers are trying to "clean up" the park and attract a new clientele, however it would appear that they want a tourist park utilising the many new cabins installed rather than campers or caravanners. I would avoid this park unless I had a totally self-sufficient van. At $31/2A a night for a powered tent site I felt this park to be over the top when the compared against the conditions of the park as a whole. I don't believe I should feel that I'm being granted a favour by being allowed to book in. Unfriendly staff, bad staff response to complaints. Price was higher than expected, poor value for money. Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to most sites, were dirty, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, separate bathroom, paper towels/dryer provided, some level sites, poor night lighting, small sites, hard to negotiate into site. Basic laundry, basic rec room. Quiet, too much shade. Basic playground. Clean pool is open to sun, kid-safe pool area. Suitable for overnighter.

Manager's name is Dean Hopkins & Leanne Louvray. Crystal Brook Holiday Centre is ideally situated 20km east of Melbourne CBD, being half way between the city and the country (Yarra Valley Wineries or Dandenong Ranges). Read a bad report and, after checking out the website decided the park may have changed hands. It has, and the new owners have updated and modernised the park. An excellent park now. We highly recommend it to all. Friendly management, management responsive to comments, management was helpful. Very good value for money. Adequate number of amenities to cater for tourists, close to sites, were clean, were in good condition, water pressure was okay, there was adequate hot water. Good sites, adequate number of tourist sites, sites were level, lighting at night was adequate, the site size was okay, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Laundry, good camp kitchen, kiosk, disabled facilities, dump point, security entry to park, van parking by management. Very good park atmosphere, quiet, open and roomy park, shady park, family-friendly park. Clean gas bbq, with a congenial atmosphere, lit at night, with seating provided. Good playground in good condition. Clean pool area is shaded, kid-safe pool area, seating around the pool was provided. Suitable for a week or more, the park was well maintained, the park can be considered kid-safe.

Blue Gums Caravan Park, Eildon
Between Thornton and Eildon, 746 Back Eildon Road. Very easy park to find, approaching Thornton on the Taggerty - Thornton road, straight ahead over the Goulburn river along Back Eildon Road for approximately 5 kms on the right. Well sign posted. Ph: 03 5774 2567. Pets allowed.
I would not really stay at this caravan park again, but it is the only one in Eildon that takes dogs. Unfriendly staff, bad staff response to complaints. Price was higher than expected, poor value for money ($23 A1 per night powered). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to only some sites, cleanliness was average, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Inadequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, small sites. Kiosk, secure entry. Quiet, open and roomy, plenty of shade. Clean UC gas bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. Suitable for overnighter, well maintained park.
Likes: It was the only park in Eildon that took dogs, the sites were green, and it is on the Goulburn River
Dislikes: The amenities block is no where near the tourist sites, it is in the middle of the permanents, you need to walk through sites to get to it, or take the long way round. There aren't many tourist sites. When I went to the office it was always closed, and in the morning, it was a hassle for the lady to come to my site to help me take the fire drum back to get my deposit back. I was not impressed and it left a sour taste about my stay. There was only 1 other camper in the park and they were a fair distance away.
Parking: Parking to check in.
Added Touches: Open fire drums allowed on site, you needed to pay a deposit refunded upon check out.
Local Information: Fishing in the lake, dogs can go swimming in the lake, dam wall. Nice area is Eildon, but most parks are mainly permanents/holiday cottages.
Roads: Nice road to Eildon via Alexandra and Yea.

Manager's name is Rod & Marielle Porter. Stayed there for 4 nights, friendly greeting from staff who it would seem have been there for quite a while and know what they are doing. We were given a choice of sites as the park was not very busy. Able to drive through onto a fairly level site with no great difficulty. Small reasonably stocked shop on site for basic items, about a 4 km drive into Eildon for anything else. Quite a few permanent sites, all in good condition so there was not a "trailer park" feel about the place. Well maintained grounds, grass although a bit dry (due to the drought) was mown and the surroundings were very pleasant. Great care appeared to have been taken in trimming the large gum trees to minimise any danger from falling limbs. Very scenic, abundant birdlife, cockatoos, pigeons, galahs etc, a short walk to the river. As the water supply is direct from the river, we were advised to boil it before drinking. We suffered no ill effects. Although we didn't use it, the camp kitchen area was one of the best we have seen, large, clean and well appointed. Again we did not use the swimming pool, but it was also very clean, fenced and looked very nice. The cleanliness etc of the toilets/showers could not be faulted. Would also like to see some powered sites nearer to the river, this would be a wonderful place to camp if they were available. Final conclusion well worth the powered site fee ($25 per night) and we would go back again.
Dislikes: Very minimal conveniences to the tourist sites, quite a walk especially if one needed to go in the early hours of the morning. This was compounded by a surprising lack of street lighting, until you got to the conveniences, it was quite dark. Though to counter this I believe another toilet/shower block is being considered. The park is dog friendly (on leash etc) but this does not appear to include permanents, we saw 4 or so wandering free in the park.

Manager's name is Ken Davis. This park has improved enormously in the last couple of years. Amenities have been upgraded and the park generally looks a lot neater and is kept very tidy. Our last visit was for 2 months quite recently, and we had a very pleasant stay with no problems at all. Would recommend this park to anyone. Very friendly staff, good staff response to complaints, staff offered tourist advice, van parking assistance provided by staff, staff helped us at the site, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, very good value for money ($160 2A per week, powered, off-peak season). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to all sites, were clean, condition is very good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, paper towels/dryer provided. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, concrete annex slabs to most sites, shade to most sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Good laundry, good rec room, good camp kitchen, dump point, van parking. Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere, a few permanents. Clean UC bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. Good playground in good condition. Clean pool is open to the sun, kid-safe pool area. Suitable for month or longer, suitable for families, well maintained park.
Likes: Friendly, helpful staff. Great location, handy for everything.
Dislikes: The go-karts. Whilst kids (and their parents) seemed to like them, I always worried someone would go off the road and into our car or caravan.
Parking: There is a parking space for arriving guests.
Added Touches: Kids activities are organised at holiday times, eg Easter egg hunts, however as we don't have kids these didn't affect us.
Local Information: Handy for the Mornington Peninsula which is a lovely area with lots of great restaurants and beaches. The local RSL Club is also great for good value meals and entertainment.
Roads: Normal for suburbia.

Manager's name is Ken Davis. We do not recommend this park to anyone. Despite its handy location, your stay will be an unpleasant one. We've had a few long stays there, but there will be no more. For the last year the park has been virtually taken over by a group of itinerant road workers. These people are loud, rude, arrogant and extremely dirty, eg they empty buckets of excrement into the toilets, don't care about spillage, and definitely don't clean up their mess! Toilets are not flushed and showers are not mopped after use. They have a lot of very young children, all feral, whose language is as bad as their parents. They blatantly flout the water restrictions, drive around at high speeds, and have loud get-togethers in the camp kitchen, which go on until the early hours. Despite numerous complaints, nothing is done about them. Further, maintenance and cleaning on the park is sub-standard, although they have the nerve to charge a minimum of $30 per night for a powered site. Give this place a miss. Average staff friendliness, bad staff response to complaints, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was higher than expected, poor value for money ($130 2A per week unpowered). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to most sites, were dirty, condition is reasonable, water pressure is bad, there was inadequate hot water, soap provided, paper towels/dryer provided. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, average sized sites, concrete annex slabs, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Basic laundry, good rec room, good camp kitchen. Noisy, open & roomy park, not enough shade. UC bbq area, lighting, seating provided at bbq. Basic playground in average condition. Clean heated pool is open to sun. Suitable for few days.
Likes: Handy for shops, freeways etc.
Local Information: Easy access to Mornington peninsula which is a very nice area with local markets, clean beaches, wineries and good restaurants.

Managers are the Smart Family. This is an attractive park and very family oriented. The management were very friendly and helpful especially when we found that our van brake lights were not responding. They supply you with a pamphlet explaining the park rules, facilities and map of the park. Cost was reasonable with Big4 discount. Kiosk, free gas and wood barbeques although these are located some distance from a lot of the sites. Amenities block was clean and attractive with a separate bathroom. Laundry was good. There is a TV room, rec room and a small but adequate camp kitchen. It has a good playground, a lovely (solar heated) pool area, 2 tennis courts, 7 hole pitch and putt golf course and a large grassed area on the creek. A car wash area is also available. Suitable for up to a week or more, the park can be considered kid-safe.
Likes: Loads of bird life, well shaded and great facilities.
Dislikes: We were situated right across from the playground and there were a lot of kids in the park. Next time we'd ask for a site well removed as the kids tended to get going very early in the morning!
Added Touches: Seasonal campfires are allowed in the park next to the creek.
Local Information: The Yarra Valley is full of wineries and they are well worth exploring. Warburton is a relatively short drive away and has a lovely river walk, good cafes and shops. The Grand Hotel is the best pub in Healesville. Healesville Hotel is pretentious and expensive (especially the restaurant). We really enjoyed the Healesville Wine Centre (in town). Great wine, food and music.

UPDATED REPORT NEEDED

This caravan park is extremely disappointing, and should only be considered as a single night transit camp for travellers entering or leaving Melbourne on the eastern side of the city. The park is poorly maintained, and has a large population (perhaps 90%) of permanent residents, residing in poor to very poor accommodation. A garbage skip was overflowing with rubbish, and the sole BBQ had not been cleaned since previous use. The male amenities block smelt offensively, and the 2 toilet cubicles and 2 shower recesses for each sex were inadequate. The laundry seemed quite good, with about 4 washers and 4 dryers, although a sign on one of the dryers indicated that it was out of action. Road noise from the nearby Princes Highway was very high. We paid $22.00 for a powered site for one night. That site was flat, but on bare ground partially covered with pine chips. Power, water and sullage were conveniently nearby. The "rec room" was locked, and the key supplied for the amenities block did not fit the "rec room" door. A children's' playground consisted of monkey bars and little else. There was no swimming pool. There are no shops within easy walking distance of the caravan park. This park is very easy to access off the Princes Highway, but if an overnight stay here is necessary, ensure that you move on the very next morning.

Beware, that on arrival the manager double swipes your credit card, keeping a blank signed section as a deposit for keys/remotes, then assures you he will tear the blank signed section up, on your departure (leaving us with a feeling of distrust). On the second day of a three-night booking, when we expressed our disappointment, we were told we were better off to leave, we did, not getting a refund for the third night, and which was very inconvenient on the long weekend. Average staff friendliness, bad staff response to complaints, staff helped us at the site. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($88.00 2A per night). Inadequate number of amenities, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, disabled facilities, good night lighting, small sites, hard to negotiate into site. Basic laundry, basic rec room, dump point, secure entry. Noisy, claustrophobic park, plenty of shade, too many permanents. Basic playground in poor condition. No pool.
Likes: Close to the beach.
Dislikes: Level of noise at night, mainly uncontrolled children. Park shaped in a small horseshoe. Very small.
Local Information: Location was fine, although we chose to swim at Dromana, we thought Dromana would have been a better place to stay.

Manager's name is Peter and Robin Axton. Dog friendly park with a large off lead area. "Doggie Bags" supplied Well maintained facilities would cope at all times, spotlessly clean amenities with piped radio and mops to clean up after use. Adequate laundry facilities. Bore water with a tank for drinking water. Some sites have concrete annexe area. Park has many permanents but we didn't find this a problem. Huge camp kitchen, fully enclosed with roll up walls and fridges, microwave, television and BBQ. Park is next door to the marina and we were able to have our boat left in the secure jetties during our stay. This is one of the few parks on the Mornington Peninsula that allows dogs. Nothing was a problem to Peter who went out of his way to make our stay pleasant No Swimming Pool or any swimming facilities close by. This is a park you would use to explore the area as it has nothing else around it. Very friendly staff. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($24 2A per night powered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is very good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, paper towels/dryer provided, exhaust fans/good ventilation. Likes: Dog friendly close to marina. Very peaceful, relaxed atmosphere.
Dislikes: The sandflies nearly killed us; would seriously consider staying away when in season.
Parking: Adequate area to book in.
Local Information: This park is in a sense remote. It has no hotels or eating facilities near by and only a kiosk with basic requirements. You need to bring everything with you or drive to Hastings/Somerville for supplies including fuel. Is a jump off point to explore the Mornington Peninsula.

Bore water thru on-site taps, but filtered tank water available. Well stocked kiosk. Secure entry and exit from park. Key to amenities. Amenities were spotless, well lit, heated, showers adequate with curtains and large dressing area, soap, paper towels and dryer. Three drive-thru sites, close to amenities, level, water, power, sullage close to sites. Well looked-after sites, lawns mowed. Tent sites. Airy, spacious park. Dogs allowed on leash, and exercise area at rear of park. Doggy bags provided (nice touch). Phone first about dogs, manager's discretion. Gas refills. Separate bins for recycling. Allowed us to stay up to 1pm because of an emergency we had - no problem, very understanding.
Local Information: Lots to do and see around that side of the peninsula. Peter handed us a good tourist map of things to do. Thornton Caravan Park, Thornton
Ph: 03 5773 2305.
This is one park I would never return to. It was cluttered by permanent vans that were added onto with outside kitchens and bbq areas that had no gap between each site. Because the residents of these vans had no parking space left, they would just park on the road. It is definitely not a friendly place to stay for a casual visitor. The park is pet friendly which is usually a good thing. The problem with this park is that even though dogs are meant to be kept on a leash, no one seems to enforce the rule. While sitting by the river with our children, we were repeatedly wet by dogs coming out of the water then standing next to us and shaking. We were sitting outside a van and dogs kept coming up to us with no owner anywhere to be seen. There was also a huge problem with doggy doos left everywhere. The residents also seem to have a fascination with pet cockatoos, with many walking around with their birds on their shoulders. Average staff friendliness, bad staff response to complaints. Price was as expected, poor value for money ($31 2A C3 per night powered). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to most sites, cleanliness was average, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, average sized sites. Basic laundry, no rec room. Noisy, claustrophobic park, not enough shade, too many permanents. All pets allowed. Dirty UC electric bbq (free), dismal bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. Good playground in average condition. Suitable for overnighter.
Likes: The only good thing I can say about this park is that it is right on the river which was a pleasant place to sit and relax as long as you didn't mind the dogs annoying you.
Dislikes: 75% of park was permanent vans used as holiday homes. They were so close together and so close to the road the whole park had a dirty and dingy look. The people staying in these vans treated casual visitors as outsiders and with complete disrespect. They were yelling, singing, and using obscene language until at least 2am on both nights of our stay. There was an open dam used as a swimming pool with no safety fence or any sort of child proofing around it. The whole place was miserable and completely unwelcoming. Probably the worst place we have stayed.
Local Information: The park is half way between Eildon and Alexandra. Plenty of fishing along river.

Tooradin Caravan & Tourist Park, Tooradin
Tooradin Station Road. Ph: 03 5998 3349.
We stayed at this park because we were tired and did not want to drive any further. The caretaker was over friendly and stood around and talked to us constantly. The ablution facilities were very run down and the showers did not work - you had to run the cold tap first and then the hot. It took around 5 minutes to get the shower hot only to get in and it go hot/cold in a few minutes. The cost was $32.50/night, they charge for all children (we have a 2 and 4 year old) and have no facilities for children (ie. playground or flat roads to ride on). When we asked for a partial refund due to not being able to shower we were ignored. On the day we checked out they had locked the office and the caretaker was no where to be found. We were not able to make a formal complaint and no one wanted to assist us.

203 Mountain Highway. Ph: 03 9887 1157.
I have used this park many times over the years and always been happy with it. It has meticulous facilities, even heated slab floor for showers & toilets. Staff always generous with time, helpful. Only down side is few tourist sites. Close to all amenities. Little noisy early in morning as shift workers drive past tourist sites, but all residents are considerate as possible. Amazingly sensible price for a capital city. Very friendly staff, good staff response to complaints, staff offered tourist advice, van parking assistance provided by staff, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was lower than expected ($22 2A powered). Amenities are close to most sites, were clean, condition is very good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, dry change area, paper towels/dryer provided, exhaust fans/good ventilation, disabled facilities. Inadequate number of tourist sites, some unlevel sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Good laundry, late checkout allowed (past noon), disabled facilities, dump point, secure entry, van parking. Quiet, open & roomy park, not enough shade, family/friendly atmosphere. Good playground in good condition. Clean heated pool, kid-safe pool area, toddlers catered for. Suitable for a week or more, well maintained park.
Likes: Proximity to facilities. Price. Amenities block.
Dislikes: On a hillside, sites not level but as good as could be in circumstances
Parking: There's a "wait" space.
Local Information: Only park within cooee of shopping centres in Melbourne's outer east (Knox, etc)

Warburton Caravan and Camping Park, Warburton
30 Woods Point Road. Coming from Melbourne on the Warburton Highway, just through the town, over the Yarra river on the right. Dogs on leash. Ph: 03 5966 2277. Dogs on leash.
Stayed 3 days, $24.00 per night powered site. Staff were friendly and we were allocated site P3, a long grassed site close to the road, but the traffic noise was no problem. This should be classed as a camping ground, because there was no sullage and we were told that you could not put your grey water under the trees – you had to put a bucket under your van and empty the grey water into the toilets. Neighbours in a campervan commented that you put your dirty water into the dirty toilets. The nearest amenities block to our site was a makeshift building with one ladies toilet and shower (sign said cold water only), the same for men. Very poor cleanliness with this block only getting one brief and very poor sweep out in three days. The other amenities blocks, some distance from our site, were also tired with very poor cleanliness. There are a lot of permanent sites around the large park, some were tidy with lovely gardens, others needed a good de-clutter. The park itself is in a beautiful area with the river nearby but unfortunately we could not get a riverside park as the sites there were small and only suitable for camping or small caravans. It was school holidays when we arrived so there were plenty of campers and lots of children. The central open "oval" was filled with tents and the children were no problem as they stayed in the oval area. The laundry was basic, also not clean so I did not use it. Swimming pool next door looked as if it had been empty for some time. Warburton and surrounding areas are just beautiful but it was heartbreaking to see some burnt out areas in nearby towns. We had a great dinner at the Polish Jester Restaurant in the main street of Warburton. Food was excellent, good value, and filling, but service was a little slow. We would not come back to this park mainly because of the cleanliness. I would expect to be lugging buckets of water if I was camping, not caravanning.
