Adventure Bay Holiday Village, Bruny Island
Adventure Bay. Located right on the beach front. Ph: 03 6293 1270.
UPDATED REPORT NEEDED

Absolutely stunning location, right on the beach. Very quiet and tranquil, nice to have camp-fires. Amenities are fairly basic, but clean. Albino wallabies across the road, some nice walks in the National Park minutes away. If you are there during summer holidays, make sure you go on the National Park walks and talks, we found them terrific. Average management, friendly management, management was helpful. Good value for money. Average amenities, adequate number to cater for tourists, were clean, water pressure was okay, there was adequate hot water. Average sites, adequate number of tourist sites, sites were level, the site size was okay. Laundry. Good atmosphere to park, quiet, open and roomy park, shady park, family-friendly park.
Likes: Tranquillity, location, beauty of the area.
Dislikes: Strict 11pm curfew, i.e. you must be in bed by this time. Friends of mine were talking quietly around the camp-fire and were basically told to go to bed. Evictions seemed common for disputing these arrangements.
Park Rating 3.5: Suitable for a week or more

Captain James Cook Memorial Caravan Park, Bruny Island
Beside road to Adventure Bay. Ph: 03 6293 1128.
We were waiting in line to take the ferry to Bruny Island (just south of Hobart) and I decided to ring one of the 2 parks that list that they allow pets - the Captain James Cook Memorial Caravan Park, to confirm that they had spaces available. The woman who took my call was happy to take the booking up until I mentioned that we were in a tent, notwithstanding the fact that I also mentioned that we travel with a portable fence to prevent our dogs from wandering or becoming a nuisance. She abruptly said that they don't allow pets when travelling with a tent! She added that the other park wouldn't allow dogs on the same basis also. I've never heard discrimination based on the type of accommodation travellers might be using. By the way, this holiday was in a tent as we are now living in a new German Geist caravan full time and we decided to "take a break from our home" - bet we would have been welcomed with open arms if we'd turned up in the Geist! Go figure.

The Neck Camping Area, Bruny Island
Small sign on left as you get past The Neck. Free camping area.
UPDATED REPORT NEEDED

Drop toilets, undercover area with tables and fireplace. No designated camping spots, just find one someone else has used. Open fires allowed, but no firewood. Easy access for caravans. Peaceful, surrounded by trees and birds, 50-100 m walk to beach.
Local Information: The penguin rookery is about 3 kms north (you pass it in the middle of The Neck). Free access along well-made board walk. Get there about 1/2 hour after sunset to see the penguins.
Roads: Mostly bitumen from the ferry, but the gravel roads are very suitable for vans.
Campground Rating 1.5:
Report submitted by Badger.

Cloudy Bay Camping Area, Bruny Island
South of the island at Cloudy Bay. Free camping area.
UPDATED REPORT NEEDED

There is another free camping area further along from here, but access is literally via the beach. Drop toilet. No designated camping spots, in a small area surrounded by pine trees, well out of the wind. Open fires allowed, but no firewood. Easy access for caravans. Peaceful, surrounded by trees and birds, 300 m walk to beach. We had the place to ourselves for 2 days and just used it as a base to explore the rest of the island.
Local Information: The walk to Mt Managna was marred by previous morons cutting down branches and laying them across the track, but the effort was worth it for the views at the top of the southern part of Tasmania. Moderate effort needed.
Roads: The road from Adventure Bay is not suitable for vans, so just take the normal road thru Allonah and Lunawanna which is bitumen and good gravel.

Cygnet Caravan Park, Cygnet
Mary Street. Administered by top pub, on left hand side going north, big sign on roadside outside pub. Ph: 03 6295 1869. All pets allowed.
Good level cement sites. Only a small park with about 10 powered sites so it would be prudent to call ahead. Very friendly staff at the hotel who have only recently taken over this park and have plans to modernise and improve facilities. Must have the biggest shower cubicles in Australia. Good spot to tour this area from. We stayed a week and had no problems. Plentiful oysters on rocks throughout the area. Excellent meals at the hotel. Good value at $25 per night with 7th night free. Very friendly staff. Price was as expected, good value for money ($25 2A powered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, paper towels/dryer provided. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, concrete annex slabs, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Good laundry, no rec room. Quiet, open & roomy park, too much shade, family/friendly atmosphere. No bbqs, no playground, no pool. Suitable for a week or more, well maintained park.

Dover Tourist Park, Dover
Kent Beach Road, which is the coast road to Police Point, signposted from both ends of town. Family Parks member. Dog friendly. Ph: 03 6298 1301.
This is quite a nice park in a lovely little town and the only one in the area. The back of the park is nicely grassed but we were told if it rains it would get too wet, so were put on a very small site without grass. The amenities are very old and could really do with some maintenance and renovating, although they are clean. Shower pressure was poor and very much affected by someone else turning on a tap, etc. The owner remarked that he has a lot of trouble with vans throwing the power cutout switch, only on one side of the road, which is the side he put us on, and this happened twice on one night to us when the van next to us put the electric jug on. We had to get the manager on both occasions because the cutout switch is in a locked room and he was extremely rude and told both of us that we must be using too much power and if it happened again, he would have to ask us to leave. This was at 9pm. We feel that the price is too high. It is not good value for money, they have too many vans running on old wiring systems and we wouldn't stay again. I would rate the park itself as 4 but the amenities as only a 2 1/2 and the friendliness if something goes wrong as a zero. The manager did say to us that it's these new vans that are a problem with the power because we have big fridges. Very unfriendly staff. Price was much higher than expected, reasonable value for money ($27.50 2A per night, powered, off-peak season). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is reasonable, water pressure is bad, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, paper towels/dryer provided. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, small sites, no sites with concrete annex slabs, very few sites are shaded, hard to negotiate into site, adequate taps close by. Basic laundry, no rec room. Peaceful, claustrophobic park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere. Clean electric bbq, congenial bbq area atmosphere. No playground, no pool. Suitable for few days.
Likes: The park is quiet and picturesque and the town is lovely.
Dislikes: The old amenities, and the very rude attitude of the Manager.

This is a very nice park in a beautiful little coastal town, lush grass on most sites and very well maintained. There are a few weekender/onsite vans here and they are all neat and tidy. This is a very good springboard for the area from Huonville to Cockle Creek. There is a very friendly bowls club here which is affiliated with the RSL club. A creek borders the park so children need some supervision. Would definitely use again. Friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was higher than expected, reasonable value for money ($27.50 for 2A powered site) - a bit pricey but we were offered 10% disc for our 2 week stay. Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is very good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, paper towels/dryer provided. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting. Some sites are small, some average and some huge but all are level and there are drive through sites. Good laundry, dump point, camp kitchen provided but fairly rustic. Peaceful, open & roomy park, family/friendly atmosphere. Clean UC bbq (pay), congenial bbq area atmosphere. No playground, no pool. Suitable for a week or more, well maintained park.
Likes: The setting is great, over the road from a really good beach with a tall wooded hill behind and a peaceful creek beside.
Dislikes: I drew a small site but it was still big enough to have the awning extended and park the car onsite.
Parking: Pull in far enough to clear entrance and keep left.
Roads: Roads good but some bendy bits. Coast road is now all bitumen but main road better for caravans.

Inadequate number of amenities, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, small sites, hard to negotiate into site, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Basic laundry. Peaceful a well maintained park.
Likes: Level lush grassed site, quiet setting. Friendly and helpful proprietors with good local knowledge. They are making improvements to the park.
Dislikes: Inadequate showers & toilets. No drive through sites offered to us.
Local Information: Nice walk along foreshore.

Judbury Camping Area, Judbury
Judbury is west of Huonville.
UPDATED REPORT NEEDED

The advertised camping area is now closed, however we did find a fantastic picnic area in town. There were no less than 12 picnic tables, 2 free electric bbqs, a good playground, water, and toilets. Gold coin donation in box. The area is provided by the Judbury Progress Association and there is a box for donations, which we made, and we left a note of congratulations on such a great area "in the middle of nowhere". There was a sign in a sheltered picnic area that said "no camping in bbq area", but we stayed on the advice of a local that said it was okay as long as we didn't stay "for days" and the sign was to stop people sleeping in the sheltered area.
Local Information: To the west is a lovely forest drive that takes you thru some steep hills, magnificent lookouts, and tree-felling areas.
Roads: Good. The forest drive road is very good, dirt road, but leave the van behind.

Land of the Giants Caravan Park, Mt Field National Park
Ph: 03 6288 1526. Must have National Parks Pass.
Manager's name is Stephen Jubb. Mt Field is about 90kms west of Hobart. The caretaker of the caravan park is also the manager of the cafe in the national park's Visitors Centre so enquire there first. This is a very basic park in a lovely bushland setting. It has about a dozen powered sites, a camp kitchen and an old amenities block that is adequate (showers are hot) considering the natural setting amongst tall trees with the Tyenna River a feature. Sites are informal, dirt, some moss coverage and muddy when it rains. Pademelon wallabies come around at night. There are minimal local services so bring everything with you. Having said that the excellent cafe in the national park's Visitors Centre has meals, coffee, etc. The rubbish tin lids have bricks wired to them to stop the locals getting access. Site fees are $25 per night but this represents good value in such a pretty and isolated spot. This is not your normal tourist park but it is a great stopping off point to visit the Styx Valley, Russell Falls and the drive to Strath-Gordon. Well worth a stopover on the drive across to the West Coast.
Likes: Beautiful bushland setting, powered sites, hot showers
Dislikes: Poorly drained sites

New Norfolk Caravan Park, New Norfolk
The Esplanade. On the banks of the Derwent River. 1.5k north of post office. Ph: 03 6261 1268.
Good management, friendly management, management responsive to comments, management was helpful. Good value for money. Good amenities, adequate number to cater for tourists, close to sites, were clean, were in good condition, water pressure was okay, there was adequate hot water. Very good sites, adequate number of tourist sites, sites were level, lighting at night was adequate, the site size was okay, drive-through sites were available, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Laundry, security entry to park. Very good park atmosphere, quiet, open and roomy park, family-friendly park. Suitable for month or longer, suitable for families, the park was well maintained, the park can be considered kid-safe.
Likes: It is a traditional "no frills" park. I mean this in a good way in that we are not looking for, or wishing to pay for extras such as pools or playground equipment. Management were quite friendly and most sites are drive through. Park was spotlessly clean.
Dislikes: Shower drainage flows across all cubicle floors into a single drain.
Local Information: This is a great place to stay not far from Hobart and directly adjacent to the Derwent River.
Roads: Generally good, but the park is located in an urban area.

Manager's name is Derek & Sally Collins. Adjacent to river, near bowls club. Well signed on approach to town. A very busy park but well maintained. Would be a good choice if travelling with dogs, as it seems to be about the closest to Hobart that allows dogs. Please note charges were for unpowered site as all powered sites were full. Also note, we were in an "overflow" area and cannot comment on some of the features of the main park area such as playgrounds, BBQs etc. Friendly staff, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, good value for money ($15.00 2A per night unpowered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to all sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, extra charge for shower. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, adequate taps close by. Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere. Fortescue Bay Campground, Port Arthur, Tasman National Park

UPDATED REPORT NEEDED

This is a campground but may be an alterative to caravan parks for those who want to see Port Arthur. Unpowered sites only. Pit toilets, one gas heated hot shower was on trial while we were there so not sure about that now, was paid for by donation. Boat launching facilities, right on coast, boil water to drink. Camp fires allowed, firewood available to buy from parks office/kiosk. $11 per night 2A 3C, good value for money. Some great walks from the campground. Very picturesque location. Close to Port Arthur, poor road in as there are logging trucks.

Stayed 3 nights @ $29 per night for ensuite site. Absolutely beautiful park with very big drive thru sites, each separated from the next site by way of tiering and bushes. Ensuite spotless. I checked the amenities block and was suitably impressed. Staff was extremely helpful and very friendly. Ample parking while booking in. This park is set in the bush with rabbits and colourful birds almost tame right at your door. 5 minute drive to the Convict Settlement or 45 minute bush walk. Wish we could have stayed longer, so peaceful!

A very nice caravan park, about 10 - 15 minutes from Port Arthur. On a lovely beach, which we unfortunately didn't have time to enjoy, because of doing the "tourist bit" in Port Arthur. We were running out of time at this stage. There is still a charge of 40 cents for a shower.

Considering we had booked 3 months in advance for a powered site, we were disappointed with the position of our site - stuck on a corner squeezed between 2 other campers. Being peak Christmas/New Year season, we had booked 3 nights at this park but left after 2. The unfriendly office staff told us that without a doubt, we would receive no refund unless they were able to re-book our site. We got the distinct impression we would never know if this happened. The amenities block, whilst reasonably new (with free showers) were very badly designed with everything getting wet in the change room cubicle. The floor was extremely slippery and rubber mats would not go astray. Although pets were only allowed at Manager's discretion, 3 sites up from us were 2 barking dogs for the entire first night. Would not bother staying there again. Poor management. Reasonable value for money. Average amenities. Average sites.

Manager's name is Doug & Sue Sanders. Very friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice, van parking assistance provided by staff, staff helped us at the site, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, good value for money ($16 2A 2C per night unpowered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to all sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, hot water was usually adequate but not when busy, extra charge for shower, paper towels/dryer provided. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, concrete annex slabs. Basic laundry, no rec room, late checkout allowed (up to noon), kiosk. Peaceful, open & roomy park, family/friendly atmosphere. No bbqs, no playground, no pool. Suitable for few days, suitable for families.
Likes: Very spacious area for unpowered camping. Wood fires were allowed, we were also allowed to use some wood that had been recently chopped on the property. The lady who booked us in and showed us to some suitable sites was extremely helpful and offered to ring a local tourist site to find out what times they were open. We were the only campers in the unpowered area, it was lovely and quiet. A few motor homes were in the powered section. Some of the other unpowered areas were a bit mushy following some rain, not muddy but very wet mossy type of grass. In summer time I wouldn't think this would be a problem. The park is behind a tavern/small shop, so we liked that we could get a counter meal if we wanted. The shop is also a servo.
Dislikes: The showers ran hot and cold, so had to keep adjusting the tap. There is a very small creek running at the rear of the camping area, this was not a problem for us, but if you have very small children, just be aware of this.
Local Information: This is a good spot to base yourself at and do day trips to Hastings Caves, Cockle Creek and Ida Bay Railway.

This is a fairly new or refurbished small independent park, which is part of a complex, consisting of a hotel, a general store and the caravan park. You check in at the store. It is not listed in most of the Tasmanian tourist information, which is a shame, because it is a real find, in an area with few caravan parks. It is located in a pretty setting, well grassed and with huge trees. The management was friendly, the pub serves good budget meals, and you are walking distance to the lovely Southport Bay beach. If staying at Southport, don't miss a trip on the nearby Ida Bay railway. Good value for money, it cost us $16.50 for an unpowered site for 2 people. The amenities block is modern and clean, with $1 coin-in-slot showers, for which you get about seven minutes of hot water. Adequate number of amenities to cater for tourists, close to sites, were in good condition, water pressure was okay, there was adequate hot water. Good sites. There were powered and unpowered sites available. Powered sites (some were drive-through) had gravel bases, and you can have a campfire at your site also (BYO wood). Laundry, kiosk, van parking by management. Very good park atmosphere, quiet, open and roomy park, shady park. Clean UC wood bbq (free), with seating provided. Suitable for a few days, the park was well maintained.
