Report submitted by Tracy and Matt (21).

This is just about the main caravan park in Bicheno - the BIG4 place is cabins only. It is a large and well established park that has recently undergone extensive renovations. Many of the permanent vans are located at the rear of the park. Unfortunately, the planning was a little poor as the main amenities block is set near the cabin area at the front of the park while the main bulk of van sites are served by 2 small en-suite type units further away. The amenities block has been refurbished and is modern and clean but is a long walk from most of the van sites. (150m from our site) There is a campers kitchen and laundry and management are welcoming. Many of the older sites are small and suitable for motorhomes only - motorhome rental is huge in Tassie and they easily outnumber caravans. There are around 20 larger 'new' sites towards the back of the park with cement slabs and new power poles. The supermarket and newsagent are just over the busy main road. Bicheno is a pretty town and well placed to visit Freycinet National Park. The wildlife park just N of the town is worth a visit to see a large display of Tassie devils and many other animals. Friendly management. Poor value for money.
Likes: Set in the centre of town
Dislikes: Poor design with main amenities block well away from most van sites.
Local Information: Penguins come in at the Blowhole around 6.30pm. There is an online access centre in town where you can check your email for a nominal charge.

The owners have spent a lot of money on this park in the last few years. Management was very friendly, recommended things to do and places to visit. Very large sites for vans. New ensuite- style amenities in the newer area but in busy times you will need to take a hike to the general amenities. The amenities have been redone and modernized and were spotless during our visit. Camp kitchen. Good water and large laundry. At $25 per night it was good value.

Seaview Holiday Park, Bicheno

Banksia St. Ph: 03 6375 1247. Pets allowed.

This park was previously a Church of Christ camp site which has been "inherited" (their words) from the two ladies who had been running it for 2 1/2 weeks when we stayed there. It has 9 powered sites, which are mostly level, dirt from memory, and 14 unpowered sites. Two of the sites are basically on the side of the road, and we managed to score one of these, but at the time were grateful to get a site anywhere in the area for two nights! There is a single site higher up in the park, basically behind the bunkrooms, which had a superb view. There are several bunkrooms (looked to be about 4 bunks to each room), and several units. The main amenities block (I only used the laundry) had been allowed to run down quite badly I was told, and at present are only being used by the school groups whose bookings they also inherited. They "probably" won't continue with these when the present commitments are over. The amenities which they are using for the other campers, are unisex. These had originally been used to service the bunk rooms, when used by the Church of Christ. Took a bit of remembering that "no, I wasn't in the wrong area" at first, but rather fun to use them as a couple. (The couple showering beside me on the first morning thought it was quite fun.) There are 3 toilets, and 3 showers, plenty of shelving, although too high to put your feet on to dry them. The shower unit I used the first morning, was missing its hooks, but there were three on the others. And the showers had screens. They are reasonably close to the sites, although an uphill walk, with steps, is involved from most of them. There is a single toilet, with a hand basin, set among the powered sites, on the lower level. The amenities were kept very clean. The laundry had 2 washing machines, and 1 dryer. The owners plan to do some work on the sites during winter, but they are perfectly acceptable now. Cost $25 per night, which was about average for our stay in February/March. You can walk down to the beach, about 7 mins away. We did walk down to the Blowhole to see the Penguins along with a few others, and did manage to see some, but we could have done with a better torch. Might I suggest, as we soon found out, that bookings at this time of year are really advisable in Tasmania. We are not in the habit of having to plan ahead, we like our holidays to be spontaneous.

Branxholm is 25 kms east of Scottsdale, on the Tasman Hwy. Ph: 03 6354 6168. Book in at the IGA store across the road before entering the park. No dogs allowed.

Even though the park is listed as "no pets", on speaking with the manager he says small dogs may be allowed if you ask first. There is off road camping before passing through the gate. You get a key that lets you through the gate and into the showers. Good basic campground with old but well maintained facilities. Power is available to 8 sites but there is no water to sites. There is one tap at the camp kitchen but the town water is not drinkable without boiling. Average staff friendliness, good staff response to complaints. Very good value for money ($13 2A per night, powered, or $7.00 unpowered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to all sites, cleanliness was average, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, sites will accommodate large motorhomes and 5th wheelers, no sites with annex slabs, very few sites are shaded. Basic laundry, basic rec room, secure entry, no wireless internet available, mobile wireless not available. (carrier used was Telstra, reception quality was 5). Quiet, open & roomy park, no permanents. Clean UC electric bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. Good playground in average condition. No pool. Suitable for a week or more, suitable for families, well maintained park.
Likes: Nice open camp ground nicely grassed
Added Touches: The showers are some of the best campground showers I have seen. There is one each for men and women. The shower recess is very roomy with a good stub wall that keeps the rest of the room dry. The room has a good seat and basic basin with plenty of room. The WCs are in a separate block with no key locked doors.
Local Information: Nice place to visit the attractions in the area. Pick up very good info on attractions and camping along the Tasman Hwy as you pass through Scottsdale if you are passing in an easterly direction.

Bridport Caravan Park, Bridport

Bridport is a lovely little town on the coast 80 km NE of Launceston. Ph: 03 6356 1227. (Pet policy unknown.)

Bridport is a pleasant little town. The park is set in bushland. It is poorly maintained and the sites are very uneven. Thankfully there were only a handful of tourists in the park whilst we were there so we were able to choose our site but that wasn't easy. It is better to leave your vehicle outside and walk into the park to have a look around. It would have been impossible for us to manoeuvre our 25ft van around if the park had been full. There are small shower/toilet blocks and toilet only blocks scattered throughout the park but they are all in need of refurbishment. The block nearest to our site was cleaned between 6.30am & 7.30am which was very inconvenient. There is also a $1.00 charge for the showers. Average staff friendliness, staff explained park layout and facilities. Poor value for money ($25 2A per night, powered, shoulder season). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to only some sites, cleanliness was average, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, extra charge for shower, soap provided, dry change area, paper towels/dryer provided, exhaust fans/good ventilation. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly unlevel sites, poor night lighting, sites will accommodate medium to large vans, very few annex slabs, shade to some sites, hard to negotiate into site, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Basic laundry, no rec room, you can use your mobile wireless (carrier used was Telstra, reception quality was 4). Quiet, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, a few permanents. Just drive thru town & follow signs from the top roundabout. Along the NE coast there isn't many choices for a park east of the Tamar & this is the best of the bunch but I wouldn't go back if they paid me. The park is "managed" by several casual ladies in the office, you pay your money & get a receipt & that's it for service. Find a site where you see a space with power & water & if you are lucky it might be less than 30 degrees of slope. It's the worst laid out location in all Australia, it's a cash cow for the local council, with no service, no cleanliness, & cleaners who shut the toilets from 6.30am to 7.30am for cleaning; don't worry about peak periods or the state the toilets get into over the whole day. Council have no interest in doing anything to improve the park or spend a single dollar on it, so why pay them $25 per night plus $1.00 for the shower each, camp out & enjoy a freeby. The one feature is the beach, the park is right along the beach & the beach is clean but if you select a site near the road you need to be a mountain goat to come back from the beach. $41.00 to stay in a dump; camp out & save your money. Very unfriendly staff, bad staff response to complaints. Poor value for money. Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to only some sites, were dirty, condition is poor, water pressure is good, hot water was usually adequate but not when busy, extra charge for shower. Mostly unlevel sites, poor night lighting, sites will accommodate large motorhomes and 5th wheelers, no sites with concrete annex slabs, shade to most sites, drive-through sites, hard to negotiate into site. Basic laundry, no rec room, no wireless internet available, mobile wireless not available. Quiet, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, a few permanents. No bbqs, no playground, no pool. Suitable for overnighter.
Likes: The beach & views
Parking: I'd leave my van up on the road, not down by the office, & after check in walk round the area to select a site & figure out how you will negotiate to it, then get the van & wind thru the trees & other vans to your chosen location. It's a long way from one end to the other & near impossible to drive around

This is a very basic campground with no facilities. However, it fronts onto a pristine surf beach with white sand and a backdrop of temperate rainforest. There is gravel road of 300m with a turning circle at the end. Camp wherever you want. Fires are allowed but bring your own wood. All rubbish to be taken with you and while people camp with limited toilet facilities, it's best if your rig is self contained. Very good value for money. Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade No playground, no bbqs, no pool. Suitable for a week or more.
Likes: Possibly the prettiest beach camping area in Tasmania and it's free. Pets are allowed.
Dislikes: Watch out for teenagers camping. They can arrive in droves and party all night, but generally only in holiday periods and over Christmas.

No water or other amenities. Totally free and no Parks Pass required. Maximum of 4 weeks stay. Inadequate number of amenities, are close to only some sites, cleanliness was average, condition is reasonable. Mostly level sites, sites will accommodate large motorhomes and 5th wheelers, no sites with annex slabs, shade to most sites, you can use your mobile wireless (carrier used was Telstra, reception quality was 1). Quiet, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, no permanents. No bbqs. Suitable for a week or more.
Likes: Wonderful beach for long walks. Just pick an area and camp. No regimented areas.
Dislikes: Some sites had rubbish left from previous campers. Even though there are toilets, some campers are using the bush with no regard to cleanliness.
Parking: There are two entrances. Because of the size and layout, park off-road at the entrance and walk around to select the site that suits.

West Parade between the Meander River and the railway line. On river near close to shopping centre. Ph: 03 6362 2345. Dogs on leash.

Positives: Great little caravan park on the bank of the Meander River. The grass is lush green and it is a beautiful area. The amenities were clean and the water from the showers plentiful. Fees were $25 per night unpowered. There is no playground in the park, but there is a large playground (with a full size train) about a 5-10 minute walk away. There is a swimming pool situated right next to the caravan park. The river is ideal for a leisurely paddle on a kayak. Negatives: Right next to the train tracks. Trains seem to go past 3 or 4 times a day (at least once around midnight, sometimes twice). The park managers are not situated in the park. They live in a house across the road. There is a sign at the entrance to the park explaining where the 'office' is. We missed the sign and had to phone to find out. To get to the pool you have to drive through the caravan park. This creates a little traffic and I think because the park managers are not onsite, a lot of drivers pay little regard to the 10kph speed limit. We had to be really wary of the kids going near the road. Summary: Despite the comments above, we would happily stay at this park again. It is a great spot with plenty of attractions nearby.

Manager's name is Ruth. A beautifully situated park that runs along the grassed banks of the Meander River. It is a long thin park with 2 lots of amenities - only the older and smaller block was open in September. The friendly caretaker lives over the road just near the park entrance. The amenities were basic and only of average cleanliness (they could have been better). 2 showers, 2 toilets. Water was always hot. Small laundry. There are some cement pads which are handy when it's wet but most of the sites are grassed. Many were damp and boggy in September. Deloraine is a lovely town to use as a base to explore the surrounding region. It has an excellent visitors centre with the famous Yarns display and an adjoining museum complex. There is a large Woolies supermarket just off the main street. TV reception is poor with no digital. The Emu Bay railway runs through the park and makes for an interesting diversion in the middle of the night. This is a simple park with no frills in a very pretty location but it provides all the basic requirements.

Cannot beat the location. Beachfront with access to some amazing walks. Hike into Wineglass Bay, one of the world's best beaches. In summer the campground is only available with a ballot system that closes in October the year before. We are staying here in February, and sites are readily available. You will need a National Parks Pass. The best option for interstate visitors is a Holiday Pass that gives access to all Tasmanian parks for 8 weeks. The showers are new and cost $2 per shower. Likes: The location is idyllic and natural Tasmanian bush. In spite of the proximity to other campers, the campground is very peaceful. Happy hour on the beach with other campers while watching the sunset was amazing. The visitor centre is 70 m away and has a wealth of information on the area. The National Park staff are very friendly and knowledgeable.
Dislikes: Sites are very close to each other and difficult to reverse into. Larger vans will not fit.
Parking: It is best to ring and book. A ballot system is in place for summer.
Local Information: Huge granite mountains, Wineglass Bay and a range of bush walks from very easy to very difficult make for a memorable experience. Freycinet Sea Cruises offer a 4 hour cruise to Wineglass Bay with an excellent commentary. Freycinet Lodge has good meals and can be accessed via a 1/2 hour walk along the beach from the campground. Clean, tidy well maintained. No hot showers, only 1 cold shower. No laundry. Good toilet facilities and dump point. Good water and power at site. Good water pressure. Swimming close by at beach (around 30m). Good hard standing, no slabs or grass. Value for money doubtful, but as National Parks are required to be self funding in Tasmania with no support from Treasury, (according to Ranger), then the money goes to a worthwhile cause. Friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was higher than expected, reasonable value for money ($20 2A powered) plus must hold a parks pass. Inadequate number of amenities, are close to only some sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good. Inadequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by, dump point. Peaceful, open & roomy park, not enough shade, family/friendly atmosphere, no permanents. No bbqs, no playground, no pool. Suitable for few days, suitable for families, well maintained park.
Likes: Proximity to NP, cleanliness, peace and quiet.
Dislikes: Amenities; showers and laundry.
Parking: No, adequate parking for large vehicles.

First park we've been to in Tas that disappointed us. BIG4 but no sullage on sites making it difficult to keep site dry. No dump point. Nearest caravan dump site a 75 km drive - we decided to use main facilities at all times except during night to minimise travelling so far just to empty waste. Weather was wet and freezing. Manager said no dump at park or in town as they are on septic, but we have been in many parks on septic with dump points - especially for eco sensitive treatments. Hot water in ladies showers very low pressure - but men's OK. Wineglass Bay is awesome so don't miss this town but be aware of dump limitations. Excellent camping facilities (but still no dump point) at national nark nearby. Average staff friendliness. Very good value for money ($40 2A per night, powered, off-peak season). We paid $36 because of BIG4 Discount. Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is bad, there was inadequate hot water, soap provided, paper towels/dryer provided. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, sites will accommodate large motorhomes and 5th wheelers, very few annex slabs, shade to some sites, adequate taps close by. Basic laundry, basic camp kitchen, wireless internet is available, you can use your mobile wireless (carrier used was Telstra, reception quality was 5). Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade. Clean UC gas bbq ($1.00), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. Good playground in good condition. No pool. Suitable for few days, suitable for families, well maintained park, park is considered kid-safe.
Likes: Near beautiful Wineglass Bay
Dislikes: No dump point at park or in town - 75 km drive to nearest one. No sullage to sites.

Beautiful location right on the edge of the Freycinet National Park. Very friendly and helpful management but the tourist sites could do with some work. The amenities have been refurbished and are in good condition. We felt that $40 was a bit pricey for the time of year but it's all about location, location, location I guess. Very friendly staff, good staff response to complaints, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Poor value for money ($40 2A per night, powered, off-peak season). We paid $36.00 because of BIG4 discount. Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to most sites, cleanliness was average, condition is very good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, dry change area, exhaust fans/good ventilation. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly unlevel sites, poor night lighting, sites will accommodate medium to large vans, no sites with annex slabs, no sites are shaded, adequate taps close by. Good laundry, no rec room, camp kitchen, secure entry, you can use your mobile wireless (carrier used was Telstra, reception quality was 4). Quiet, open & roomy park, not enough shade, a few permanents. Clean UC gas bbq (pay), bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. Good playground in good condition. No pool. Suitable for a week or more.
Likes: Close proximity to the NP.
Dislikes: The poorly maintained sites.
Local Information: Close to beach, tavern (good meals), bakery and small supermarket. Only 2kms from Freycinet National Park Info Centre which is very impressive. Town centre has post office, takeaway & restaurant. Wineglass Bay Cruise office is in the town centre (trip costs $120.00 each). Kayak tours ($90) from the local beach.

Friendly Beaches Camping Area, Freycinet National Park
http://www.parks.tas.gov.au/index.aspx base=412#fre
After turning off the Tasman Hwy onto Coles Bay Road towards the National Park, the Friendly Beaches turnoff is to the left after about 8 kms, well marked. After turning off Coles Bay Road, the road is a good dirt road, which splits after 2 kms, heading off to separate camping and picnicing areas. Ph: 03 6256 7000 (National Park office). No pets or campfires allowed.

This is a basic bush camping site in a separate section of the NP to the main well tourist part near the Coles Bay township. It is about a 15 minute drive from Coles Bay, the last section being a 4 km unmade gravelled road. When we were there, the road was in poor condition, corrugated and potholed, and we had to drive very slowly with the van. The camp itself is right alongside the beach, which is a magnificent, wild white sand beach, with no crowds. The campsites are small private bays cut into the dense vegetation, and bordered by large rocks to prevent you enlarging them further. This means that many sites are unsuitable for caravans, but there are some good large sites if you look carefully. The only facilities are long drop toilets, which needed maintenance when we were there. Camping is free, but it is inside the NP, so you need a current parks pass. This is a lovely, quiet alternative to the crowds of Coles Bay area. Reasonable value for money. Sites were level, the site size was okay. Quiet, shady park. Suitable for a few days.

1774 Greens Beach Rd. Ph: 03 6383 9222. Pets at manager's discretion.

This is a council owned park in the small seaside town of Greens Beach. $20 per night unpowered. Positives: Location. Greens Beach is a great little town. It has one shop that sells everything from fuel to takeaways to groceries. There is a golf club right next door to the park. The park is directly opposite the beach which is ideal for kids. The water is only around a couple of feet deep at least 100m out. Negatives: There is no playground for the kids. There is a small playground opposite the shop around 100m from the park, but it is very basic. The park is neatly split into two (east and west). There are no amenities in the east side of the park. It is a long walk from (100m) the east side to the toilet/shower block. The showers are great when there aren't many people there. The more people that use the showers the less water pressure there is. This would only be an issue during peak times. Summary: It's such a great location we would certainly visit again.

For a complete R & R away from the hustle & bustle, this is it (as long as it's out of school holidays). The park is at the end of the road on the left side of the Tamar as it enters Bass Strait. Low head is on the other side. Is across the road from a delightful long beach. The manager & wife are very friendly & just want you to feel at home. They are caravanners themselves. The park is quite large but only has 1 toilet block & this can be some way from your site however it's as clean as can be; the grounds are neat & clean with no rubbish to be seen, the manager even goes round every morning picking up the wallaby calling cards. Whilst the park is at the end of the road it's not far back to the Batman Bridge to cross over to Georgetown & the NE or back to Exeter & across to Devonport. The best part is the price, $120 per week or $20 per night, the only down side is the $1.00 charge for the shower which I think is simply a price gouge & won't pay it; I use the shower in the van. Very friendly staff, good staff response to complaints, staff offered tourist advice, staff helped us at the site. Good value for money ($20 2A per night, powered, shoulder season). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to only some sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, extra charge for shower. This is the worst caravan park I have ever stayed in - booked 3 nights but only lasted 2 as the noise was so bad from the adjacent freeway - the amenities were OK although old and in need of repair. The only good thing about the park is the proximity to the city. Friendly staff, good staff response to complaints, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was higher than expected, poor value for money ($29 1A per night, off-peak period). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to most sites, cleanliness was average, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, concrete annex slabs to some sites, shade to some sites, hard to negotiate into site. Good laundry, basic rec room. Noisy. Dismal UC bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. Basic playground in average condition. No pool.

I didn't want to stay here because of previous reports I had read, but it was the first caravan park we came across, on our way back to Wynyard from Bicheno. The park isn't difficult to access when coming from that direction. We must have stayed there on a quieter night (Friday) as the traffic noise didn't worry us that much, and we couldn't have got much closer to the road! Our site wasn't very level, and we were unable to make our van really level, but we had taken the last available site for our 20ft van, and were only staying for the one night. The amenities block is old, but clean, water hot, and water pressure good. The one I used was a fair distance from our van. There was a camp kitchen attached to this, which was getting quite a lot of use. No sullage point near our van, or even in sight.

This park which is very difficult to access, on a road right beside the major A1 road to Devonport and so trucks and other traffic are passing all through the night. As there is a steep hill, brakes are being engaged all the time. Although there was ample space on the far side of the park we were allocated a site very close to the highway. We had set up before several other people told us they had insisted on being moved, as they had no sleep on that site. We found our electrical connection was being used by another van. The owner said his wasn't working. We tried it and it kept cutting out. Four times we complained to the office and the man sent to see it said there was nothing wrong. In the end we used an extension cable and used the one for an unused site. For two nights we suffered yelling, screaming tourists in tents right near us as well as the loud traffic. No night security patrolled to curb the noise, which went on after midnight. On the third night we had 5-6 drunken men in a cabin right across from our van. They ran around the park naked, fought and threw things around the cabin all night. I tried to go to the office to call the night emergency but was terrified by the state of the men who were fighting outside the cabin. At 6 in the morning I eventually raced down to the office to discover it wouldn't open until 8.30 am. My husband decided we would no longer stay in the park although we had pre-paid for another night. I wrote a note and put it under the office door explaining why we had left. I have not received any acknowledgement or apology whatsoever from the managers/owners. In every other park we have stayed in around Australia we have had a phone number on our info sheet, to call for night help and were not expected to "run the gauntlet" of crazed drunks, to a buzzer at the office. Because this is the only van park in Launceston, I feel others need to be warned. Unfriendly staff, bad staff response to complaints. Price was as expected, poor value for money ($26 2A powered). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to only some sites, were clean, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, average sized sites. Basic laundry, basic rec room. Noisy, open & roomy park, not enough shade. Dirty bbq. No pool.
Dislikes: A camp kitchen such as we expected from our experiences with hundreds of other parks could not be found. There seemed to be a small barbecue area dominated by backpackers who stayed around it all night after cooking there.
Local Information: This is the only van/cabin park in Launceston and was very disappointing.

Stayed 7 nights initially $27.00 per night, $189 per week, with Tasmanian Tourist Park member discount. My telephone booking was taken by Brett who was very friendly. We found him very helpful when we arrived and he gave us maps of the area and any information we asked for. As we have a long van he gave us the option of site Nos 42 or 43, suggesting 42 because it was easier to back into. We did choose Site 42 and were very happy here. Sites in this park are of various sizes, most level. The amenity block was central to the park and was clean and in good condition. Laundry clean and well maintained. Reasonable night lighting. Very basic camp kitchen near our site which included a bbq. No playground. No pool. Dump point. Basic kiosk with good Tasmanian wines. The Tamar area is a beautiful area with lots of good wineries. We would certainly stay here again. We extended our stay for another three nights because we booked a trip to Flinders Island with Sharp airlines, and an accommodation/car hire package with Flinders Island Information Bureau. Had a great time there. This park was quiet and peaceful and we would definitely stay here again.

Manager's name is Karen. What a beautiful park, immaculate grounds spotless amenity blocks. We had a lovely site on the river it was glorious. Great help with info about the area, it is only 20mins from Launceston. 20 cents for 3 minute shower, water was very hot so well worth it. We stayed 3 nights first time and done touristy things in the north, we stayed 2 nights on the way back. The bird life in the morning is great, a nice walk into a lovely village with supermarket, pubs etc. Only reason haven't given the park 5 as it doesn't have ensuites which we can do without but I think a lot of people can't. Lovely walks in the morning along the river. Karen suggested a different sit on our return journey and lent us an extension lead, she was right as our sliding door opened onto the river view in the morning. We have done a lot of caravanning over the years and this is one of the best parks we have been to, the grounds are very spacious more like a huge park and kept immaculate. A job well done to all in this park. Very friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice, van parking assistance provided by staff, staff helped us at the site, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, very good value for money ($25.00 2A per night, powered, peak season). We stayed for 7 nights @ $25 per night powered site, good value for money. Well maintained park with friendly and most helpful owners. Park is on the banks of river with lush green lawn. We had good size site on river front, no slab, 12 sites away from amenities, ideal spot made up for that. Slab sites available in middle of park. Sites further from the reception area and past the second block of amenities are bigger. Amenities are spotless, 20c for 3 minute shower, works well! This park is very popular with regulars from all over Tasmania descending on it long-weekends etc. 20 mins drive along freeway to Launceston and beautiful Cataract Gorge. Did day trips to Tamar Valley, Beaconsfield, Georgetown, Low Heads.

There are signs from each entry into the town, the park is by the river but beyond the motel. This is a good park for an overnight on the north-south route to stop & see living history in the buildings. It's a town right out of the 1830's. The park itself is a square of land with a toilet block in the middle, 2 showers & 2 toilets but the water here is so bad & dirty you can only use the toilet. Whilst there is 2 washing machines clothes would come out worse than when they went in. You must have your own supply of water or draw from one of the tanks. I was going to stay several days until we got there but with the water so bad & the general demeanour of the motel operator/manager we moved the next day. I've met some rude people in my time but this couple are the limit, Faulty Towers is nothing on them. The layout of the park is unbelievably bad with the power outlets in a line & when the front row fills you can't get to the back row & the manager doesn't do anything to provide supervision, all he does is take the fees & even then you have to pay cash, no cards. Very unfriendly staff, bad staff response to complaints. Poor value for money ($24 2A per night, powered, off-peak season). Inadequate number of amenities, are close to all sites, cleanliness was average, condition is poor, water pressure is good, hot water was usually adequate but not when busy. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, sites will accommodate large motorhomes and 5th wheelers, no sites with concrete annex slabs, shade to some sites, drive-through sites, poor water quality, adequate taps close by. Basic laundry, no rec room, no wireless internet available, you can use your mobile wireless. Peaceful, open & roomy park, no permanents. No bbqs, no playground, no pool. Suitable for overnighter.

Likes: The most peaceful, immaculate park yet. Very friendly staff, noting seemed to be a problem. Used an ensuite for the first time and it was lovely. The amenities, rec room, kids room (with coin op all sorts of things to entertain) and camp kitchen are excellent. The huge camp kitchen even has a fire place, lounge, dining table and chairs and additional toilets. Could seat around 30 people comfortably. Also has a coffee machine. Fees for powered site without en-suite $34 per night before any discounts. Sites are all terraced and level grassed.
Parking: parking area for check in.
Added Touches: Absolute attention to detail in everything, even had pot plants, mops and brooms in amenities - spotlessly clean.
Local Information: Stunning scenery everywhere. We went to Ralphs Falls which was in the clouds at the time but it was still well worth the effort - brilliant. Make sure to get out and look at as much as you can in this area which I reckon easily rivals the Whitsundays.
Roads: Road from the Scottsdale side has a number of very tight 25kph bends while the road from St Marys has a fairly hairy section called St Marys pass. All navigable but don't rush them.

Stayed 3 nights $36.00 per night BIG4 Discount (long weekend rate). Very friendly staff who gave us tourist information and explained the facilities and layout of the park. We were allocated Site 112, at the far end of the park. Our site was dirt/grass, level with some shade with water and sullage. The main amenities block was quite a distance from our site, was very well maintained and very clean. A recreation room/camp kitchen and unisex toilets were close to our site and also were very clean. Secure entry, good laundry ($4 per wash), dump point, games room, jumping pillow, playground, bbq and boat parking. Clean under cover free bbqs. No swimming pool. Adequate night lighting. A clothes line near the back camp kitchen would be handy, so that washing need not be left at the distant laundry site, but could be hung nearer the back sites. A large grassed tent/camping area at the back, not all level. This is a large quiet clean park with some tidy permanents. St. Helen's is a lovely area with lots of free camping in the Bay of Fires. We would stay in this park again.

Very unfriendly and unhelpful park manageress. Only interested in trying to make our group pay for a site for each car we had (3) while camping in the unpowered area where no sites are marked. I did phone before to book but was told that it isn't necessary as there is of lots space available and no mention was made of this "policy". Very unfriendly staff, average staff response to complaints, staff explained park layout and facilities. Poor value for money ($60 A3 2C per night, unpowered, shoulder season). Inadequate number of amenities, are close to only some sites, cleanliness was average, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, hot water was usually adequate but not when busy. Adequate number of tourist sites, some unlevel sites, poor night lighting, sites will accommodate medium to large vans, annex slabs to some sites, very few sites are shaded, hard to negotiate into site Good laundry, good rec room, camp kitchen, secure entry, no wireless internet available. Dislikes: No water available for unpowered sites at all. Have to rely on goodwill of people on closest powered sites or go quite far to amenity block. No lighting in unpowered sites either. And this despite it being only $2 a day less than the powered sites. Children from two years old pay the children fee. Camp kitchen much too small for the amount of people. Head S thru St Helen and over the bridge. The park turn off is approx 0.5 km on the right. Went at peak time and peak price and the park was bursting. The first site we were given at the top of the park was extremely unlevel. There were many more like this down the hill. When a group of campers moved in behind us on 6 sites our peace was shattered so we requested a move. The next site was level but just opposite the jumping pillow so again not great. The amenities although very modern had only very limited facilities for the large number of people staying and were constantly in use thus quickly becoming filthy especially with lots of young kids using them, also the shower cubicles were rather small. This park has won awards but it lets itself down badly when at capacity. It really needs another amenities block and some levelling of sites in some areas. Friendly staff, good staff response to complaints, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Reasonable value for money ($39 2A per night, powered, peak season). Inadequate number of amenities, are close to only some sites, were dirty, condition is very good, water pressure is good, hot water was usually adequate but not when busy, soap provided, paper towels/dryer provided, exhaust fans/good ventilation. Adequate number of tourist sites, some unlevel sites, good night lighting, sites will accommodate medium to large vans, no sites with concrete annex slabs, shade to some sites. This park is set on a sloping bushland area but sites are generally flat and spacious. Being a popular holiday spot there are many permanent vans/shacks. Generally speaking Tasmanian parks are below the standard of those on the 'north island' but this was one of the best we experienced in a 6 week trip around this magnificent island. This large park has been extensively renovated with still a little landscaping work to be done. The new amenities block is magnificent in blue and white tiles, there is a well equipped laundry, camp kitchen, children's playroom etc. There are a couple of en-suite sites with more being added. Digital TV reception was OK with a little aerial twiddling. St Helens is a very pretty town set on the sheltered Georges Bay. It is a useful base to explore the Blue Tier, Mt William National Park, Binalong Bay, St Columba's Falls, Pyengana, etc. It is worth a stay of 4 or 5 days. The visitors centre has an informative history room with wonderful displays. Friendly management Good value for money.

There are 2 parks in St. Helens, BIG4 & this one. BIG4 is $35 per night & Hillcrest is $25, and the difference is like chalk & cheese. This park is crowded out with cabins & permenants who all have a boat & start out at 6.00am each morning. Tourist sites are either behind a tin fence on the drive thru shop/cafe/office on a slope of huge proportion or along the back fence against a thru road so noise is a major issue. Apart from the noise & slope the main problem is the park is a considerable distance from town, doesn't represent good value & the "on site" shop has a world record for overcharging. The sites are so small you are unable to have your awning up & parking the car is difficult. Not 5 kms away is a free camping site with lots of space beside a lagoon, go there, or out to the Bay of Fires area. Friendly staff, average staff response to complaints, staff explained park layout and facilities. Poor value for money ($25 2A per night, powered, peak season). We were told that this park was recently sold and had new owners. That may be the reason for the price of $25 per night. As well, showers were 5c for hot water but the permanents told us this would shortly rise to $1 per shower. This park is on the side of the hill with some having ocean views. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, sites will accommodate medium to large vans, very few annex slabs, shade to some sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Good laundry, good rec room, good camp kitchen, you can use your mobile wireless (carrier used was Telstra, reception quality was 4). Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade. Clean UC gas bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. Good playground in average condition. Clean heated pool, kid-safe pool area, tables and chairs provided. Suitable for a week or more, suitable for families, park is considered kid-safe.
Likes: It was quiet with lovely views across the bay right behind the van. Manager wandered around several times a night to make sure all was well behaved and quiet even though the park was not full at the time. He was amusing and chatty.
Dislikes: Can be windy but that is out of anyone's control. Camp kitchen smelled of sausage fat. The park is quite ok but it is a little tired. Just looks like it needs an ideas-person to freshen it a bit. Having said that it is quite good overall. Needs to have screening between the permanent/annual vans and the rest.
Parking: Parking provided while booking and booking was quick and uncluttered.
Added Touches: Manager wandering to ensure quiet at night.
Local Information: Take time to look at the stars over the bay behind the park at night. Kates berry farm is nearby and a couple of beautiful little beaches just to the south of Swansea off the highway. Spiky bridge 6kms south is convict built. Take the walk with the long name (loon tite..etc) around the headland. 2 nice waterfalls and lookouts off the B34 just north of town - Lost Falls and Meetus Falls.
Roads: If coming from the north watch the right hand 90 degree bend in the middle of town as you are facing a service station. It's deceptive and can look like a straight ahead. When we were there it looked like the servo signage and garden had copped a nudge with something large and heavy.

This is an older park with mostly permanents and on site cabins. There are approximately 14 tourist sites. We had a site right on the beach with beautiful views. At $28 per night, this was a very expensive park and except for the views, was not very appealing. The management was uninterested. When we called the day before for a site we were told they were booked out but when we arrived the next day we were told by other guests that many tourist sites had been empty for a few days. The water must be boiled before use but there is a rainwater tank near the games room. Park also has a pool and playground. I don't think we would stay again.

Manager's name is Sally & Steve. A huge area of parkland suitable for all size rigs. You do not need to book, however, if you want a campfire there are only selected areas with fire pits so it is best to book those. All sites are unpowered and have no water. Water is available at the entrance to the park. Bring your own firewood or purchase from the kiosk. Showers are free and very modern and clean. Laundry is $3 a load. The kiosk cooks hot takeaways. The river has brown trout ready for the catching. Exceptionally pretty area with lots of trees and very well kept lawns. Pay at the kiosk before entering the park. Very friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice, staff helped us at the site, staff explained park layout and facilities. Very good value for money ($3.00 2A per night, unpowered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to only some sites, were clean, condition is very good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, exhaust fans/good ventilation. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, sites will accommodate large motorhomes and 5th wheelers, no sites with annex slabs, shade to some sites, drive-through sites. Good laundry, camp kitchen, kiosk, no wireless internet available, mobile wireless not available. Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, no permanents. Clean UC electric bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere. No playground, no pool. Suitable for a week or more.
Likes: Plenty of space with picture perfect sites dotted around the river.
Added Touches: Fly fishing for brown trout

43 Meander Valley Hwy. Ph: 03 6393 1846.

This would have to be the worst caravan park in Tasmania. $10 a night, no power, no water, nor sullage outlet. No parking slabs. Toilets are shared in the general car parking area with the public.Showers are $6 per shower in a converted demountable toilet. Very windy unprotected area. Bread, buns or any other bakery items from his bakery are at least a day old. Free camp instead and save $10.

Beautiful park with a great natural atmosphere. Mother nature has been very kind to this park and the bush walk behind the park into a State Forest was great. Very friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice. Reasonable value for money ($20 2A per night, powered, shoulder season). We paid $15 because of no electricity. Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to most sites, cleanliness was average, condition is reasonable, water pressure is bad, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, paper towels/dryer provided, exhaust fans/good ventilation. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, sites will accommodate large motorhomes and 5th wheelers, no sites with annex slabs, shade to most sites, drive-through sites, poor water quality. Basic laundry, no rec room, late checkout allowed, camp kitchen, wireless internet is available, mobile wireless not available. Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, no permanents. Clean UC gas bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. No playground, no pool. Suitable for few days, suitable for families, park is considered kid-safe.
Likes: The atmosphere was great, green grass everywhere, shady trees, excellent meals at the hotel, the history of the hotel, great drives through the historic tin mining areas, close to the Blue Tiers, just so much to see and do in the country side. The hotel is a family affair and they are very pleasant people. The mornings in this park are the best we have seen since our three months in Tassie. Absolute lovely beer garden. Hotel built in 1895.
Dislikes: No mobile phone coverage. Water was not available for connection to your van. Tank water only.
Added Touches: Just the quietness and the atmosphere of the park makes you think you are the only people who know about this place.
Local Information: The drive up to the Blue Tiers has heaps of history relative to the Tin Mining era. There are old dams of massive size built in the depression. Local towns (Derby for one) steeped in history. The hotel's family will steer you in the right direction.
Roads: Hotel is on the main Hwy
