This is very basic dog friendly park just north of the Arthur River village, only has around 8 power sites, a fairly large non-power area and around 12 cabins. Good basic clean amenities block, nice showers, and small basic camp kitchen. $28 powered site, or $25 for pensioners or seniors. Manager/owner Charlotte is friendly and helpful.

Located on the right just before you reach the Arthur River Ranger Station. No powered sites. Dogs allowed.

Cost $5.00 per night. Very clean toilets for both sexes and there is tap water - no showers. Site has bbq fires. Grassed areas and really lovely and restful. You just camp where you like and it is self-registration. If you are doing one of the Arthur River cruises this campground is the perfect place to stop. The road into Arthur River was fine although it was dirt for the last few kms it wasn't a problem. Would stay again. Rates well considering what one wants out of a campground and we wanted clean toilets, flat sites and peace.

378 Marlborough Hway. Ph: 03 6289 1126.

Definitely avoid. We have planned to stay at Lake St. Clair but the powered sites were just renovated and they were waiting for the electrician to switch the power back on. We picked up a leaflet for Bronte Park and it sounded lovely. There is a large reception with a bar next to it with a big log fire and pool table - but unfortunately that is where it ended. We booked and paid for 3 nights but driving through the unmaintained area passing the luxurious cabins (run down sheds), picnic and bbq area (field with long grass and one wooden bench) to what we thought was the caravan area - no slabs or dedicated sites, just a small long grassy square. The toilet block was a 100 years old and I wasn't brave enough to venture inside. We turned around, asked and received our money back and left for Strahan. This park should not be advertised on any tourist information office.

Burnie Holiday Caravan Park, Burnie
Click here for park details on My Park List
Was called Ocean View Caravan Park. 253 Bass highway. Ph: 03 6431 1925. Member of Treasure Island Group. Pets allowed, at manager's discretion, on leash at all times.

Manager's name is Valerie. The caravan park is part of, and located at the rear of, the Ocean View Motel. Friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Reasonable value for money ($28 2A per night, powered, peak season). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, paper towels/dryer provided, exhaust fans/good ventilation. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly unlevel sites, good night lighting, sites will accommodate small to medium vans, very few annex slabs, shade to most sites, hard to negotiate into site, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Basic laundry, basic camp kitchen, car wash, you can use your mobile wireless (carrier used was Telstra, reception quality was 5). Peaceful, no permanents. Clean heated pool is shaded. Suitable for few days.
Likes: It seems it's not a popular park for locals on holidays with school children. We used this park to avoid very busy beachside parks during school holidays. Penguins do come up the beach here at night.
Dislikes: While this park is close to beach you have to cross the Bass Hwy and a now unused railway line to access the beach. Dogs not allowed on the beach area (understandably due to penguins frequenting the area at night) but there is a dog beach area about 1 1/2 km east.

Discovery Holiday Park, Cradle Mountain, Cradle Mountain - Lake St Clair National Park

Formerly known as Cosy Cabins Holiday Park. Also known as Cradle Mountain Tourist Park. Cradle Valley, main road, near Cradle Mountain Transit Centre. Park is located 2km from the entrance of the Cradle Mountain World Heritage National Park. BIG4 member. Ph: 03 6492 1395 or 1800 068 574. No pets allowed.

Good park within walking distance to visitor centre at Cradle Mountain, with buses to lake etc. Well equipped with good camp kitchen and fires etc. Facilities a little old but still functional and comfortable. Bush type park with lots animals around. We enjoyed this park. Average staff friendliness, staff explained park layout and facilities. Reasonable value for money ($47 2A per night, peak season). We paid $42 because of BIG4 Discount. Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to all sites, were clean, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided. Adequate number of tourist sites, some level sites, good night lighting, sites will accommodate large motorhomes and 5th wheelers, no sites with annex slabs, shade to most sites, poor water quality, you can use your mobile wireless (carrier used was Telstra, reception quality was 5). Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, no permanents. Clean UC gas bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. No pool. Suitable for few days.
Likes: Location. Great camp kitchen with open log fires with chopped wood available.
Dislikes: Was expensive but considering its location not too bad - would have stayed longer if less pricey.
Local Information: Bring your own food - not much available here and what is, is quite expensive.

For the caravanning fraternity from the mainland we would have to put this park in the category of "well we have been there and done that". Park is set in natural native forest (national park) and one is greeted by friendly staff at the kiosk/reception. The main road to the park is all black top in good condition but roads within the caravan park complex are of crushed rock construction and therefore subject to wash away, no flat and level sites. Plenty to see and do close to park but a National Park Pass is required if going further afield. As there is limited vehicle parking at Dove Lake use of supplied transport advisable.

This park is expensive but has a captive market so grin & bear it if you are going to see Cradle Mountain. The $35 per night is made even more expensive by the need for a National Parks Pass but the facilities are good & clean & the park is well run, so no complaints. The community area is a ripper; large substantial building with double fireplace, plenty of wood & several electric BBQs. This was a bit of a sore point with the cabin folk as we had a power failure 5 hours 3PM to 9PM & there was not a gas cooking appliance in sight. Could be a suggestion for them to convert a couple of BBQs to gas for just such an emergency. Sites are gravel tucked in to bush settings with power & water & lighting. Access roads are sealed. Amenities are good & clean but laundry inadequate. Not a place to stay for an extended period due to cost but excellent for a visit to see Cradle Mountain & hike around Dove Lake. Friendly staff, staff explained park layout and facilities. Reasonable value for money ($35 2A per night, powered, shoulder season). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to only some sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, dry change area, paper towels/dryer provided, exhaust fans/good ventilation. Adequate number of tourist sites, some unlevel sites, good night lighting, sites will accommodate medium to large vans, no sites with concrete annex slabs, shade to most sites, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Poor laundry, good rec room, good camp kitchen, kiosk, secure entry, no wireless internet available, you can use your mobile wireless (carrier used was Telstra, reception quality was 3). Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, no permanents. Clean UC electric bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. No pool. Suitable for few days, suitable for families, well maintained park, park is considered kid-safe.

This is the only caravan park which is right at the entrance to Cradle Mountain. It is quite expensive, but is also one of the best laid-out parks we have stayed at, with excellent amenities. Even the powered sites are well separated from each other, with little bays made in the forest, and gravelled surfaces, which are a good idea in such a high rainfall area. The architect designed amenities block and the camp kitchen building are outstanding. The kitchen has huge open fireplaces, with all wood generously supplied, and full cooking and barbecue facilities in a completed enclosed, insulated building. In a cold climate, this is luxurious! The camp store was well stocked, even selling its own cleanskin wines. We were there at a relatively quiet time, and it would get crowded in the peak season. There are only nine powered sites, so you need to book. It cost us $40 for two people for a powered site, but, considering the amenities and the remote area, we thought it was good value for money. Friendly management. Laundry, rec room, good camp kitchen, kiosk, disabled facilities, van parking by management. Very good park atmosphere. Clean UC gas bbq (free), with a congenial atmosphere, lit at night, with seating provided. Suitable for a few days, the park was well maintained.
Parking: Some sites are small - tell them when you book if you have a big rig.

Cynthia Bay Campground, Lake St Clair, Cradle Mountain - Lake St Clair National Park
http://www.parks.tas.gov.au/index.aspx base=3470
Located in the Lake St Calire National Park, near Derwent Bridge. Ph: 03 6289 1137. No pets allowed.

Have travelled extensively around Australia. I am about to can the worst value for money & probably one of the worst caravan parks we have ever had the misfortune to stay in. Being Lake St Clair, a place that Tasmania holds out as special & the lake certainly is then you would be forgiven for expecting a good park, particularly when told the nightly tariff is $35. Not so. When you first arrive the entry is impressive; a modern very impressive building with well organised parking area at front for vehicles, coaches, caravans etc. Then you try to book in; no sign of a caravan park yet but you still feel confident. You start to wonder a bit though when you find out you just pay the cashier at the restaurant. She has your name & a booking but has lost all other details, then you pay for your site & get a key to the amenities for a deposit. She knows nothing except you go down the track in the bush to the left & just follow it. The alarm bells are starting to rattle but you still have some faith until you turn on to the track complete with minor wash outs. You duly arrive where you see some vans parked in bush sites marked by logs. Site numbers are marked on posts. Sites are natural ground (no gravel) & it has been raining so site is muddy from rain & also from last occupiers sullage. (There are no sullage drains & signs prohibit sullage disposal in the NP so we presume discharge on to ground in caravan area is the norm). We choose to use a bucket & empty our wash up water against a tree, probably not correct but at least not contributing to the mud. Then we hook up to power. Power is distributed by wires between live gum trees & droppers down trees to power points mounted on live gum trees. We look up & note the dead limbs on the gums which overhang our site but there is no avoiding them & all sites are the same. We then look for a water connexion. There are none; we find water can be carted from a tap near a bunkhouse about 100m away. Lucky we have ample in our tanks. Site is not level so we have levelled with wedges. Unfortunately we have mud outside our door so organise an extra mat to try to avoid tracking it in to our van. I decide to check out the amenities, it looks old but I still have some faith. I walk in to the shower area & back out. There is a low spot outside the showers full of water. A fellow caravanner tells me the water is because the common shower waste which serves the 3 showers blocked up last night & is to be fixed today. I skirt around it & check out the shower & immediately spot the hot water pay box $1.00 for 4 mins. That with a shower for my wife & me takes the tariff to $37 a night. Oh & watch it the paint is peeling off the floor & sticks to your feet. Having prepaid we make the best of it & take a walk in the NP & visit the Wall In The Wilderness which makes it all worthwhile. Only a short drive up the road it is really "something else". Return to the park & decide it very cold so look to light a fire in the fireplace in the enclosed shed in the caravan park only to find there is a sign "No Fires Permitted" so decide to try another fireplace in another enclosed community building near the entry buildings. It says on the sign "use firewood from lean-to beside shed" but adds that firewood cannot be gathered from the NP. Drat, there is no firewood in the lean-to so that one is out too. We can pay for a meal in the restaurant & sit around a beautiful fire in there but we are not in the mood by now so retire to our van & start the electric heating. Time for a shower, $1.00 in slot & wait 1min for hot water then 3 mins left for shower. By now paddling in water from 3 showers as drain has blocked again. Lake St Clair is magnificent at sunset & dawn but best part of the caravan park is the road out which looks great next morning. There is nobody to complain to except the girls in the restaurant who are obviously backpackers & cop the flack but can do nothing about it. Management appears to be scarce. Very unfriendly staff, bad staff response to complaints. Poor value for money ($35 2A per night, powered, off-peak season). Inadequate number of amenities, are close to only some sites, were dirty, condition is poor, water pressure is bad, hot water was usually adequate but not when busy, extra charge for shower. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly unlevel sites, poor night lighting, sites will accommodate medium to large vans, no sites with concrete annex slabs, shade to some sites, hard to negotiate into site, poor water quality. Poor laundry, no rec room, no wireless internet available. Quiet, open & roomy park, too much shade, no permanents. No playground, no bbqs, no pool.
Dislikes: It's a dump.
Local Information: The Wall In The Wilderness is a must for any visit to Tasmania. We were later told there is free parking, a shower & great meal available at Derwent Bridge Pub just up the road. Unfortunately we didn't find out till after.
Roads: Good Roads in the area.
Date 04/2010. Park Rating 1: Wouldn't recommend it in a fit.
Report submitted by JimO (4).

To stay here you first need a National Parks Pass. The campground is a separate operation and not part of National Parks, making a night here a very expensive exercise. The campground has sites for caravans/motorhomes and tents and all sites are on dirt (read mud after snow or rain), unlevel and with power only. There are 2 drive through sites with the rest a mix of different sizes and mosly on a significant slope. No water or sullage. Many campers were complaining of being given innacurate or unreliable information by staff when booking in. The toilets and showers are old and often smelly and dirty. This is partly due to the large volume of people using them, many of whom arrive after a 3 day walk. There was another smaller block at the other end of the campground which we did not see until we were leaving. However, if the park were full we could not see how these facilities could cope. There is little lighting, but as this is a NP that is to be expected. Many foreign tourists had negative comments about the ground, making this an issue for us all. Unfriendly staff. Price was higher than expected, poor value for money ($25 2A powered). Inadequate number of amenities, are close to most sites, were dirty, condition is poor, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, extra charge for shower, paper towels/dryer provided, mostly unlevel sites, good night lighting, hard to negotiate into site. Basic laundry, basic rec room, good camp kitchen. Quiet, plenty of shade. No playground, no pool. Suitable for overnighter.
Likes: The wildlife all around and under our van.
Dislikes: the price.

Manager's name is Carolyn & Dale Newall. We felt this park had seen better days. It showed signs of better times, but now is poorly maintained. There was tall grass around electrical points and taps, and when commenting to managers, they said the whipper snipper would break things. This was no excuse for poor maintenance of important things. Everything seemed to be about more money - expensive showers, excessive costs to use open fires, etc. Could be a great park, is a lovely spot, but I wouldn't go back. Park is showing its age. Average staff friendliness, bad staff response to complaints, staff explained park layout and facilities. Inadequate number of amenities, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is reasonable, water pressure is bad, there was inadequate hot water, extra charge for shower. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, large sites, very few concrete annex slabs, shade to most sites, adequate taps close by. Good laundry, good rec room, good camp kitchen, kiosk. Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere. No bbqs. Excellent playground in average condition. No pool. Suitable for few days.
Likes: Large sites, privacy. Delineation between sites. The camp kitchen was nice. Would have been nicer if we knew where it was though - weren't shown or told.
Dislikes: Paying for showers was an abomination. This must have added $5 at least per day onto costs for 1 adult, 2 kids. And then the showers were poor and short! There were also only 2 showers in the only ladies block, and a poor supply of hot water. Firepots - was something like $10 for a "permit" (nothing official - from the park), then a fee per night, and $10 for first load of wood was compulsory - and it was about a half wheelbarrow of small pine pieces. Plus a $20 deposit. When leaving, they made you put any excess wood on their pile - to on-sell! When coming over for the inspection (which was just rude anyway) the manager didn't bring the $20 and had to go back and get it - like she was expecting to keep it... this really spoiled our visit. Kids loved the playground, but it was in dire need of an upgrade/maintenance.
Parking: Parking all good.
Added Touches: Can have open fire - but see hefty costs above.
Local Information: Near Stanley and the nut.
Roads: Just off the highway - all good.

The amenities block we used was still in a state of disrepair, as previously reported, showers especially, but were clean, and there was plenty of water. Only a small round stool to put our clothes on. Staff friendly and helpful, very busy at the time (we had arrived from the boat, as had many others.) We were offered a site with a slab, as we were staying for 2 nights. I found this quite amusing while we were putting ourselves on site, as I had forgotten that our new caravan has a rear door. The slabs were very small, and we went nowhere near having the door near the slab. The park itself, needs quite a lot of work done on it, but is in a lovely position, especially if you have never travelled on the Spirit of Tasmania before, and like to see it moving in and out of Devonport. Still appears to be a large number of permanents.

Roads: Most Tasmanian roads were made by timber industry and mining, so they seem narrower than mainland roads and they have a lot of bends with ups and downs.

Lakeside Caravan & Holiday Park, Devonport

76 Lakeside Road, Euggenana. Ph: 03 6427 2343. (Pet policy unknown.)

Average staff friendliness, average staff response to complaints. Reasonable value for money ($177 2A per week, off-peak season). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, sites will accommodate large motorhomes and 5th wheelers, no sites with concrete annex slabs, shade to some sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Basic laundry, basic rec room, no wireless internet available. Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, a few permanents. No playground, no pool. Suitable for few days.
Likes: Lovely natural environment. Very secluded. Ensuite sites were clean and functioned well. Amenities block, old but clean. Cheap rates.
Dislikes: Lots of junk dumped around the park, car bodies, etc. Generally looks run-down. Lots of animals and wildlife in the park, which is great, but lots of fresh poo to stand on and put your annex up on - we asked management for a shovel to clear some away for the annex. Don't leave food in the annex overnight.
Parking: Plenty of parking.
Local Information: A very remote area. When heavy downpours caused a power outage for 1.5 days, mobiles didn't have reception, phone box went down, lighting went down, and management was not in attendance.
Roads: Roads are good. Single lane.

Close to the beach, long but flat walk to town. Cost was $28 per night 2A. Was told later by others that Seniors Card was accepted, but we were told no discounts. Bathrooms and laundry were tidy. Ordinary camp kitchen that was taken over by backpackers. Nice views across to watch 'The Spirit' sail in and out. Management helpful. We would stay again.

We stayed here 2 years ago when owners took over, it was then very basic. What they have done since is a credit to them. They have new ensuite style amenity block, single backpacker quarters under cover. Site is surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery. Only a few kms from Sheffield or Lake Barrington. Walking tracks close by. Owners very friendly and helpful. Well worth a stay. We will go back again to see the progress and enjoy the tranquil location.

Manager's name is Lloyd. This park is a work in progress. Its amenities are new and has in one complex 6 individual bathrooms with a toilet, shower and basin just like at home with plenty of room to move. In addition it has 2 toilets on the end. The owners are very obliging and friendly. It is on the site of the old hydro work depot and they have big plans for it and it should be supported, as it is a good place to base for Cradle Mountain and surrounding areas. Very friendly staff. Good value for money ($25 2A, powered, shoulder season). We paid $22.50 because of Tassie 10% discount deal. Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to all sites, were clean, condition is very good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, extra charge for shower, separate bathroom, dry change area, paper towels/dryer provided, exhaust fans/good ventilation, disabled facilities. Likes: The park is isolated and right on natures doorstep, step out of van and look up to see Mt Roland - priceless. Tariff was reasonable. Park provides easy access to Sheffield, Tasmazia and Cradle Mountain National Park. It was very peaceful. 1st night only 2 other RV's second night 3 other RV's. Owners very laid back. Friendly staff, average staff response to complaints, staff offered tourist advice, staff helped us at the site, staff explained park layout and facilities. Reasonable value for money ($30 2A 2C per night, powered, off-peak season). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is very good, hot water was usually adequate but not when busy. Finally - a park that wants your favourite pet and close to Cradle Mountain. This park is an old converted hydro village. It is not flash but at just $10 per night ($5 per person for a powered site) it is great value. Beside Mt Roland and just 15 kms S of Sheffield it is an easy 45 minute drive to Cradle Mountain National Park. The showers and toilets are old but tidy, the laundry has a free washing machine. There are no taps around vans so stop by the office and fill your tank with pure rainwater before going on site. We were very happy to leave our dog in the van and drive the trip up to Cradle Mountain - just spectacular. A great compromise for those of us who travel with pets and want to visit NPs.

Manager's name is Patrick. Site is part of the old Gowrie Park Hydro Village. We stayed a week and had no problems. Nearest fuel and shopping is at Sheffield. Good, friendly management. Reception was rarely open but no worries, just pick a site and Patrick will come round about 6 pm to book you in. Excellent value for money ($5 per person per night for a powered site). Average amenities, close to sites, were clean, there was adequate hot water. Good sites, are fairly level and were well covered with dormant grass, poor water quality. Mainly set up for backpackers, only has 10 powered sites. Laundry, rec room has free internet, TV and open fireplace (wood supplied free), late checkout allowed (past noon), share kitchen with backpackers. Excellent TV from ABC and SBS but forget the rest. Good atmosphere to park, quiet. Clean UC wood bbq (free), lit at night, with seating provided. Suitable for a few days, the park was well maintained, the park can be considered kid-safe.

Dislikes: Mains water has heavy tannin contamination but adequate rainwater supplied for drinking.

The park is for tourists only with no permanent residents, has 40 powered sites and numerous unpowered sites, within a short walk to the CBD and set in a beautiful, 100 acre park land beside the Mersey river which is full of trout, and platypus are easy to watch from the banks. Good swimming areas are set out within the picnic areas, a truly beautiful spot so close to the ferry. The best park we have experienced and we have travelled extensively throughout Australia.

Mole Creek Caravan Park, Mole Creek

2 Union Bridge Rd. Around 4 km west of Mole Creek at a road junction. Ph: 03 6363 1150. Pets allowed.

This rustic park is set in a beautiful location on the banks of Sassafras Creek with Mt Roland as a backdrop. Powered sites are grassed with a windbreak at the rear to cut down that sneaky NW wind. Unpowered sites have the luxury of being right on the creek bank with open fire pits allowed. The park is in reasonable driving distance of Cradle Mountain, Mole Creek Kars National Park & the Marakoopa/King Solomons cave systems. Sadly the condition of amenities and facilities on powered sites is a letdown with no water pressure and blocked sullage, making unpowered sites better value for money. This park could and should be a gold mine given its location to some wonderful tourist attractions. Sadly however the local council has let this park down. It is a shining example of Tassie's need for tourism but its general reluctance to encourage it. Average staff friendliness. Poor value for money ($25 2A per night, powered). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to most sites, were dirty, condition is poor, water pressure is bad, hot water was usually adequate but not when busy, extra charge for shower. Adequate number of tourist sites, some level sites, poor night lighting, sites will accommodate small to medium vans, no sites with annex slabs, shade to some sites. Basic laundry, no rec room, basic camp kitchen, wireless internet is available, mobile wireless not available. Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, no permanents. No playground, no pool. Suitable for few days.
Likes: One of the most natural settings for a caravan park outside a National Park campground in a very beautiful valley.
Dislikes: Cleanliness of amenities was poor. Facilities only hosed out and toilets not cleaned properly. On powered sites water pressure not sufficient to fill van tank much less into sink tap. All sullage drains blocked and overflowing with effluent.

Small area close to beach with toilet block. Some caravans were there and had made fences from shade cloth therefore sealing off their own area. Stayed 11 nights $25.00 per night, with 7th night free. ($30 per night for site on ocean front). Doreen and Maxine were very pleasant and helpful. We were told to choose a site and let them know which site we had chosen. It was very windy when we arrived (60km p/h) so we chose Site No. 2, which was further back from the water, behind a bush. Even here our van rocked. Our site was a level site on grass with power and water close by. This park has many permanents but they are reasonably tidy. Sites of varying sizes, no slabs. Gardens very well maintained. Amenities block close to most sites was very clean but is very old with concrete floor and shower walls lined with laminex - a 1950's look. Needs to be totally refurbished. I saw the cleaner each morning scrubbing the amenities blocks with a brush, soap and water. No matter how much he scrubbed this block it still looked old and tired. He also checked the amenities towards the evening to make sure they were in reasonable condition. No soap or hand dryer or paper towels available. The toilet doors are the shortest I have ever seen - much shorter then the toilet seat so you have minimal privacy. Dump point near amenities block. No playground, swimming pool or jumping pillows. This basic park is in an incredible setting with the most breathtaking views. With the amenities block drastically upgraded this park would be tops. I understand this park is owned by a Lebanese company in Sydney and they are only interested in taking out money and not investing in the park. Such a pity. We would stay here again.

This is a small independent park, in a lovely setting right on the coast. It has a large number of permanents, but the best ocean-side sites are reserved for temporary stays. The amenities are older, but very clean and well maintained, with good unlimited hot water. Very good management, friendly management, management responsive to comments, management was helpful. Good value for money, we paid $20 for two people for an unpowered site right on the water. Good amenities. Quiet, open and roomy park.
Local Information: Penguin is only about twenty mins drive from Devonport, and we went straight from the ferry terminal to the caravan park on arrival. It is a small town with a market every Saturday, which claims to be the largest undercover market in Tasmania. This is called a caravan park but depending on where you are put, would be better described as a camping ground. As we had a dog, we were placed away from the main area, which in fact was the best location down by the boat ramp. Limited taps, you will need a double adaptor to share water. Well surrounded by vegetation for wind protection and with a path just seconds to the large, safe beach it was a great spot. The amenities were awful, but signs inside showed the plans for a new amenities block to be completed by Christmas 2011. Management very friendly and helpful. Cost was $25.20 for 2A. When we booked for powered site to pick our own site if caretaker absent. Fine, then when we arrived she was there but to still choose our own site. Fine, but when we chose this site it was a matter to find which power supply worked. Only 2 of 4 power sockets on our site worked. Then when we went to amenities they appeared clean to me but there were only 3 showers available but only two worked as one of the showers had the nozzle out of order. We told the other residents as they arrived not to use the cubicle. No soap in toilets but paper towel there. Not sure if caretaker will fix it but I left her a note as she was not there when we departed. Also the caretaker attendance was a problem as we were continually asked where she was when new people arrived at the park. Perhaps some maintenance would improve the park. It is the only park in Queenstown and it is a pity it would not take much to improve it. We stayed 4 nights.

Stayed 2 nights $25.00 per night. Made telephone booking with Heather who was very friendly. We arrived in the park to find a note on the door to pick a site and she would catch up with us. This we did and parked across from the amenities block on a level gravel site. We found the gravel ok because it rained and gravel is better than mud. Some sites are very small. The amenities block, which is close to all sites, is very old. Very poor cleanliness. The amenities were swept when we were there but no evidence of proper cleaning with water. Build up of dirt and dust on the floor/wall skirting. The very old tiles are in need of a good scrub with very hot water and a good dose of bleach. Better still, the whole block should be totally refurbished. Lots of cob-webs that looked as if they had been there for quite a few years. Basic laundry ($4) also in need of a good clean. Two old clotheslines. Poor night lighting. No dump point. Cabins. This is a very basic park, but as we have our own toilet/shower/washing machine we would stay here again. If we had to use their amenities then we would not. But this is the only park in Queenstown so there is really no choice. This park was full both nights we were there and with an amenities block upgrade could be an excellent park. RV parking is available on the sportsground but it is a dustbowl.

Manager's name is W. Anthony. This park is very over priced, poor value for money, but there is nowhere else to go. The sites are gravel and we arrived in the wet and found only a few sites without water lying in them. The power kept shutting off to our van when we tried to make toast or boil water, so it must not be up to the right standard. The dirty old amenities were a disappointment, especially as their website advertises the park as having modern new amenities which is totally false, and I feel the outdated power supply really needs to be looked at, as well as daily cleaning and a bit of maintenance, which is what you expect for the price. Friendly staff, bad staff response to complaints, staff offered tourist advice. Price was much higher than expected, poor value for money ($30.00 2A per night, powered, off-peak season). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to all sites, were dirty, condition is poor, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, paper towels/dryer provided. Inadequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, small sites, no sites with concrete annex slabs, very few sites are shaded, drive-through sites, hard to negotiate into site, poor water quality, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Basic laundry, basic rec room. Quiet, claustrophobic park, plenty of shade, no permanents. No playground, no pool. Suitable for few days.
Likes: It is the only caravan park in Queenstown so it enabled us to stay in the town to have a good look around, and it is close to town.
Dislikes: The amenities are very old, early seventies tiles, etc and we stayed for 4 nights and didn't see any evidence of cleaning. Amenities definitely weren't cleaned on the 2 weekend days and yet Friday night was the busiest night.
Parking: No one was given any parking instructions. Everyone who came in paid at reception then asked another tourist where they should park. Sites have insufficient room to park your car
Local Information: Queenstown is a great town to spend a few days in, some lovely drives and seeing the area is a must.
Roads: Road conditions are as you would expect for Tasmanian highways, narrow, winding and hilly and you do have to take more care, but driving is a pleasant experience at a slower pace with the beautiful scenery.

Pioneer Park Camping Ground, Riana
Located 10km S of Penguin, between Riana and South Riana. From Penguin, turn toward Riana, go past the cricket oval, past the service station and general store (combined) and the park is on your left bounded by mission brown fencing. Dogs on leash.

This is a volunteer-run facility. For the most part it is quiet, however during our stay what must have been local hoons persisted in driving into the park and doing very dusty burnouts on the gravel section of the roadway. A disadvantage of being volunteer-run means there is no onsite management - this combined with poor mobile phone service means contacting police can be a problem, particularly if you were the only ones staying in the park and it was the middle of the night. Perhaps the local businesses who might read this comment might assist with identifying these hoons who will, without doubt, cause an otherwise excellent little park to be avoided. Very friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice. Price was $10 2A per night powered. Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to all sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, extra charge for shower. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly unlevel sites, poor night lighting, average sized sites, adequate taps close by. Plenty of shade, no permanents. Clean bbq. Basic playground. No pool. Suitable for few days.
Likes: Apart from comments made earlier in this report, the park is a nice haven for birds and other wildlife.
Dislikes: The town needs to quickly find a solution to the problems of local hoons or they will lose the direct income from the park and the two nearby shops will lose the accompanying business.

This is a park you would only stay in if desperate. We had arrived in the town after driving in rain all day and just wanted to stay put for the night. It was poor value for money, but a safe place to park overnight. We didn't ever see any staff. We arrived in office hours and made 3 attempts to pay for our night. The whole park was old and poorly maintained with power outlets not coping with modern caravans, kept throwing the circuit breaker. The road into the park is also not suitable for a larger van to negotiate. Sites are uneven and wet and another resident showed us how to re set the circuit breaker and commented that the wiring was sub standard but you can't get any tradesmen to that area to work on things like that. Price was much higher than expected, poor value for money ($25.00 2A, off-peak season). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to only some sites, cleanliness was average, condition is poor, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Quiet, open & roomy park, not enough shade, no permanents. No bbqs, no playground, no pool. Suitable for overnighter.
Likes: Beside the Stitt River and a short walk to the Stitt River Falls.
Dislikes: Overpriced. Poorly kept and maintained. No one in office to pay, just a sign that read to come back in office hours which we did 3 times and still no one was there.

Also called Somerset Beachside Cabin And Caravan Park. Between Burnie and Wynyard on the Bass Hwy. Ph: 03 6435 2322. Pets allowed, on leash at all times.

Older park that offers plenty of space, is convenient to most things and only a short drive to Stanley. The amenities are very usable and clean even though they are of older style. Very friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Good value for money ($25 2A per night, powered). We paid $21.43 because of seventh night is free. Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, dry change area, paper towels/dryer provided, exhaust fans/good ventilation. No sites with annex slabs, shade to some sites, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Basic laundry, good rec room, camp kitchen, dump point, van parking, you can use your mobile wireless (carrier used was Telstra, reception quality was 5). Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, too many permanents. Clean electric bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere. Basic playground in average condition. No pool. Suitable for a week or more, suitable for families.
Likes: Low cost, friendly management without a lot of 'rules and regulation', clean amenities, cafe within the grounds
Dislikes: Gravel roads and poor ground maintenance
Parking: Lots of room
Added Touches: Cafe has evening meal with live music every second Friday night, sadly not the Friday we were there
Local Information: Great place to park that is central to Burnie, Wynyard and Stanley. Best supermarket shopping is at Wynyard, saving the parking and traffic problems of the City of Burnie
Roads: Good roads all the way

This park incorporates the Two Oaks Nursery. Powered sites are large, often with gardens between. Amenities are older but clean. Good laundry. Very good BBQ area in garden setting. Away from highway so fairly quiet. Can walk across road and train lines to beach. Cost for two adults was $22. Management friendly and helpful. Easy access to tourist sites at Burnie and Wynyard.

Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, sites will accommodate large motorhomes and 5th wheelers, annex slabs to some sites, shade to most sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Likes: a very well maintained park, loved the hedging between nearly every second site. Right on Tattlows Beach, absolutely brilliant park. Bath mats supplied with each shower cubicle. Very well cleaned. 8th day was free so we saved $ and more time to look around the area.
Parking: waiting bay at reception
Added Touches: Hedged sites and maintenance man gave us a hose fitting when we'd left ours on the other side of Bass Strait. Office staff happy to book us a particular site over phone via a sketchy description. Very helpful.
Local Information: Stanley - beauty all around you. We found penguins at night in the street near the dock, around the seal cruise office and the cemetery. Seal cruise cafe excellent however weather stopped our cruise before it started. Captain of boat a font of local information and a lovely guy. Nut climb a must, Providore 24 shop has sourdough and many other yummy things. Bike riding afforded us much personal interaction with locals and was a good way to see details of the town. The museum is worth a visit. Great access to the Arthur River area for a very easy day drive to Temma and all the areas in between on the absolutely beautiful west coast. Tarkine area nearby. Too much to describe, go and try it for yourself.

A modern reception area and friendly staff to greet visitors to a well laid out park with a large number of sites having a privacy hedge, although the lawned sites over time will wear which could be a bit of a problem when wet. Camp kitchen would have to receive a big plus as it is large bright and airy. Cleanliness of amenity block and laundry acceptable where you have people using them all the time.

The park is right on the beach. It is predominantly cabins, as most parks in Tasmania are, with a handful of 'annuals'. It has one of the best camp kitchens we have seen. Some tourist sites are sheltered by tall hedges. Friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Reasonable value for money ($27.00 2A per night, powered, off-peak season). Amenities are close to most sites, cleanliness was average, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, dry change area, paper towels/dryer provided. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, sites will accommodate medium to large vans, no sites with concrete annex slabs, no sites are shaded, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Good laundry, good rec room, camp kitchen, dump point, book swap available, you can use your mobile wireless (carrier used was Telstra, reception quality was 4). Quiet, open & roomy park, not enough shade. Clean UC bbq, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. Good playground in good condition. No pool. Suitable for a week or more, suitable for families, well maintained park, park is considered kid-safe.
Likes: Its position which is next to the beach, beneath The Nut, and in the centre town.
Dislikes: The dump point is situated outside the park
Added Touches: Towelling floor mats are supplied in the showers.
Local Information: Plenty of eateries including the highly recommended Stanley Hotel and Heskeys Seafood for fresh fish, takeaways and seafood restaurant.

This park is ideally situated along Tatlow's Beach just below the Nut. There are lots of cabins, lush lawns, bunkhouse, modern camp kitchen with TV and a luxurious office. Considerable renovations have been completed since our last stay here around ten years ago and more work is being done. It seems to be mainly a tourist park with over 30 cabins and over 50 powered sites. The town supermarket is next door to the park. We were allocated a beachside site for our 16' van but it was quite small with barely room to park the car and it was very worn with little grass. Clearly these sites are in greatest demand. Most sites had good windbreaks. There are 2 large amenities blocks. The one we used was only of average cleanliness. There were cobwebs in the toilets and no soap in the dispensers for the duration of our 5 day stay. In this day and age it is a basic requirement of caravan parks to supply soap and hand drying facilities in the amenities block. It is disappointing that so many fail to satisfy this basic responsibility. This aside the park has a good atmosphere and provides a pleasant stay. The price of $22 per night 2A was good value.
Likes: Large well laid out park right on the beach
Dislikes: No liquid soap in the amenities
Local Information: Stanley is the perfect base to explore the NW part of Tasmania. Attractions include, Dismal Swamp, the Stanley seal tour, Highfield House, Dip Falls, Arthur River, Sumac Lookout, etc.

A disappointment. Nothing was clean - really quite poor cleanliness in amenities and especially camp kitchen. Many things out of order. Toilets and showers in separate buildings (neither clean). Good sites and the town of Strahan is awesome - the cruise and the train trip were amazing. Average staff friendliness. Poor value for money ($37 2A per night, peak season). We paid $33.30 because of BIG4 Discount. Inadequate number of amenities, are close to most sites, were dirty, condition is poor, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, sites will accommodate large motorhomes and 5th wheelers, annex slabs to some sites, shade to some sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Well maintained park. Caravan sites outnumbered by cabins. Sites more cater to campervans which are most popular in Tasmania. Would have struggled to put the annex out. Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. This is a good clean park that would have to be average all round for Tasmania. A bit wet under foot but that is par for the course for the location. Has good clean & spotless BBQ area & is fairly open & being opposite the police station probably fairly secure even though it has no special security arrangements. A good pleasant walk to town with concrete path about 70% of the way along the waterfront. Average staff friendliness, average staff response to complaints, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Reasonable value for money ($30 2A, powered, shoulder season). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, cleanliness was average, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, dry change area, paper towels/dryer provided. It rains 300 days a year on average in Strahan. The powered sites in this park were small and mainly gravel with some lawn but they were very wet underfoot - cement slabs and gravel would better suit the conditions but drainage needs to be improved. A friendly welcome with useful tourist advice provided. The park is well laid out, mainly cabins in one section with the powered sites over a small and narrow bridge. Amenities consist of 4 ensuite units plus a couple of separate toilets. They were clean and well equipped. What happens in Strahan is that most people leave early to go on the cruise or the train trip so there is a rush on the amenities and they are under pressure until 8.30am, even in September. There seems to be less powered sites (I counted 18) than previously reported with more cabins being installed so it would be wise to book in busier periods. TV reception was surprisingly good with ABC digital reception quite clear. There is an independent Wifi internet service available in the park. $25pn with discount for 2 people was good value in this expensive town but the powered sites could be improved quite a lot. Like most parks in Tassie there is reported to be a Platypus in the creek. Very good management.
Likes: Friendly management.
Dislikes: Poor drainage and inadequate amenities.

Clearly marked on both the N and S approach from the 1A0. Ph: 03 6289 0111. Pets allowed, on leash at all times.

Tarraleah was a 'Hydro' town that the population diminished from 16,000 to just 4. It was sold and is now privately owned and is about 300 acres. There is now all types of accommodation from houses to campsites, cabins, to the Lodge. There is a hotel and a great cafe within the town. Very friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Good value for money ($26 2A per night). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is very good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, dry change area, paper towels/dryer provided, exhaust fans/good ventilation. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, sites will accommodate large motorhomes and 5th wheelers, no sites with annex slabs, shade to some sites, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Basic laundry, no rec room, camp kitchen, kiosk, no wireless internet available, mobile wireless not available. Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, no permanents. Clean UC electric bbq ($1.00), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. Basic playground in average condition. No pool. Suitable for few days, suitable for families, well maintained park, park is considered kid-safe.
Likes: Peaceful, well grassed and well drained spacious sites, timber privacy screens between most sites with gardens surrounding the screens. Good cafe, nice meals at the hotel that is open in the evenings with a log fire when it is cold in both. We enjoyed a meal at the hotel (although the wine was pricey) and a great breakfast at the cafe
Dislikes: No phone or internet coverage and no internet kiosk and public phone (as advertised in the 2011 Caravan and Holiday Guide to Tasmania, published by Discover Tasmania)
Parking: Ample
Added Touches: Watching the wildlife that is prolific in the park from dusk on
Local Information: Many people with an interest in hiking, fishing or kayaking would choose to stay much longer

Not your normal town and caravan park. Tarraleah was once a major part of the hydro electric scheme dating back to the 1920s and is now privately owned. Booking in at the cafe/general store is made easy with friendly staff. There are a total of 27 powered sites plus non powered sites. Plenty to see and do in the way of walks etc if one is inclined or just learn some local history. Not sure as to what a stay in the middle of winter would be like but any other time believe worth a visit to get away from computers, TV (unless you have satellite) and mobile phones

Tarraleah is a 300 acre estate which was once a small township. The weather was poor during our stay so unfortunately we did not see it at its best. Also, we were the only people there. There is a lodge, dormitory & cabin accommodation plus tourist sites (20 powered plus unpowered). Friendly staff, staff explained park layout and facilities. Reasonable value for money ($26 2A per night, powered, off-peak season). Likes: Very picturesque location.
Dislikes: Small amenity block (4 toilets/3 showers). Laundry room was large, very dirty and only had 1 washing machine and 1 dryer. No Next G or Bigpond signal.

This is not like a caravan park, but you stay there for the experience of the township. The price was higher than we expected because it is very basic and once you pay the money, you just treat it as a camp ground with facilities and power and water. The park is purpose built and really is geared to accommodate large groups, the caravan sites are a new extension but a very small part of the whole camp situation. It is a peaceful overnight stop to see the town itself. Average staff friendliness, staff offered tourist advice. Price was higher than expected, reasonable value for money ($26 2A per night, powered, off-peak season). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to only some sites, cleanliness was average, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, paper towels/dryer provided. Adequate number of tourist sites, some unlevel sites, poor night lighting, small sites, no sites with concrete annex slabs, no sites are shaded, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by. Basic laundry, no rec room. Peaceful, open & roomy park. No bbqs, no playground, no pool. Suitable for overnighter, well maintained park.

Local Information: You can ride a bike or walk almost anywhere around the town and a lovely cycleway to Turners Beach which takes you right to a berry farm at Turners Beach. Parks almost all around the caravan park. Close to Spirit terminal. Level crossing to enter park but controlled with lights and infrequently used by trains who give plenty of warning.
Roads: main roads all the way to Ulverstone.

Very friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice, staff helped us at the site. Reasonable value for money ($37 2A, shoulder season). We paid $34 because of BIG4 discount. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, sites will accommodate medium to large vans, no sites with annex slabs, very few sites are shaded, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Good laundry, good rec room, late checkout allowed, camp kitchen, you can use your mobile wireless (carrier used was Telstra). Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, a few permanents. Clean gas bbq (free). Good playground. Suitable for a week or more, suitable for families, well maintained park, park is considered kid-safe.
Likes: close by to a lot of attractions

Trains pass close to the park but this was not an issue. Very friendly staff, staff explained park layout and facilities. Reasonable value for money ($28.80 2A per night, powered, off-peak season). Amenities are close to most sites, were clean, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, dry change area, paper towels/dryer provided. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, sites will accommodate medium to large vans, no sites with concrete annex slabs, no sites are shaded, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Basic laundry, basic rec room, camp kitchen, dump point, secure entry, you can use your mobile wireless (carrier used was Telstra, reception quality was 4). Quiet, open & roomy park, not enough shade, no permanents. Good playground in good condition. No pool. Suitable for a week or more.
Likes: Friendly management who were more than happy to let us check in straight from the ferry at 7.30am. Lots of lush, green grass. Very close to the beach.
Dislikes: No mop, bucket or hand dryer and poor ventilation in the amenity block we used. No trees or shrubs.
Local Information: Good location for north/west coast.

Manager's name is Janice. This is quite a good park. Most sites are a little small and rather crowded but are beautifully grassed and not too much of a walk to amenities. Roadways are too narrow because of sites being so small that cars have to park partly on the road, so parking vans and leaving was not easy, but this was due to it being Easter. In a quieter time, this is probably one of the better parks in Tasmania. Friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was higher than expected, reasonable value for money ($31.00 2A per night, powered, peak season). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, extra charge for shower, separate bathroom, soap provided, dry change area, paper towels/dryer provided. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, small sites, very few concrete annex slabs, shade to some sites, hard to negotiate into site, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Good laundry, basic rec room, dump point, secure entry. Noisy, claustrophobic park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere, too many permanents. UC bbq, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. Excellent playground. No pool. Suitable for month or longer, suitable for families, well maintained park.
Likes: Green Grass, generally well maintained, walking distance to town and beaches. Plenty of gates leading out to beach and park.
Dislikes: No rules for children riding bikes, etc. As we were there over Easter, there were more children that adults and the children mostly were noisy and uncontrolled riding bikes up and down the roads in groups all day at a faster pace that the speed limit for cars.
Parking: Yes, a small area.
Local Information: Ulverstone is a town where you can do day drives to lots of scenic areas and attractions as well as having lots to see in the town and nearby towns.

This is a large holiday park typical of beachside parks around the country. It has friendly management, clean and renovated amenities, large lawned sites, well equipped laundry and a campers kitchen. You need to pay 20c for a 5 minute shower. It works out to be around $23 per night 2A with the BIG4 discount. Wireless internet is available via Net4. TV reception was mixed. The train runs just past the front gate. Security is excellent with a big fence around the park and key operated gates. The beach is a 2min walk away. The one thing that spoils this park is the number of old and untidy permanent vans scattered around the park.
Likes: Large lawned sites.
Dislikes: Permanent vans.
Local Information: Ulverstone is a large and friendly town with excellent shopping and other facilities. It is midway between Burnie and Devonport and so presents as a good base to see the area. Don't miss the scenic drive to Penguin and the Penguin market on Sundays.

Waratah Camping Ground, Waratah
http://www.warwyn.tas.gov.au/site/page.cfm u=390
Behind Council Chambers in Smith St. Waratah is just off the main road between Burnie and Queenstown, roughly halfway. This is a small tin mining town. The village has landscaped the old river into a park complete with lake. This feeds the waterfall right in the middle of town. This small campground is only 40 mins drive from Cradle Mountain. Turn off Murchison Hwy S of Hellyer Gorge. Council owned. Ph: 03 6439 7100. Pets allowed, on leash at all times.

Overpriced at $26 PN with nothing else apart from showers and toilets. We stayed 2 nights and on the first morning no toilet paper. However, the showers were magic. Expensive little town for a stopover. If councils want to run a park, make it more attractive. We have stayed at few council run parks and apart from this one they have been all been good for what you expect for the price. Warialda council park was beautiful at $20 PN. Friendly staff. Poor value for money ($26 2A per night). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to all sites, cleanliness was average, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Mostly level sites, good night lighting, no sites with annex slabs, no sites are shaded. Poor laundry, no rec room, no camp kitchen. Peaceful. No playground, no pool. Suitable for overnighter.
Dislikes: The price of the place.

Peaceful, open & roomy park, not enough shade, no permanents. No playground, no pool. Suitable for a week or more, suitable for families, well maintained park.
Likes: Small park kept very clean. Close to Cradle Mt and Tarkine areas. Great value for money - free washing machine and dryer. Very pretty town really trying to cater for tourists. Lovely parks with platypus swimming only m from vans. The whole town is tidy and welcoming. We extended our stay and used it as a base for exploring the area. Pet friendly.
Added Touches: The staff at the council have produced brochures to publicise the town.
Local Information: This is a really good base for exploring the area in quiet peaceful pretty surroundings.
Roads: Very good roads

This is not an official caravan park, but a campground. It is $20 a night and the fees are paid at the council building or out of hours at the local roadhouse. This fee is as we expected. It is simply a parking area, some sites are grassed while others are on blue metal. There is power and water but no sullage. There are 2 round concrete tanks divided down the centre making 3 ensuites and one laundry which has 1 washing machine and 1 dryer, both free. The fees are as we expected and good value for money. Waratah is a very beautiful very small town on the west coast with a gorge and waterfall right in the town, and a campground such as this allows you to experience a few days easily in the area. We would definitely stay again. Price was as expected. Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to only some sites, cleanliness was average, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, large sites, no sites with concrete annex slabs, no sites are shaded. Good laundry. Peaceful. Clean electric bbq (free). No playground, no pool. Suitable for a week or more.

Stayed 3 nights @ $20 per night, great value. Only 20 sites for vans, some on lawned area other on gravel. Lovely spot for a few days. Amenities are unisex ensuite type, clean and adequate. 60 kms from Cradle Mountain area and Dove Lake. Roadhouse is only place to buy groceries so suggest stocking up beforehand. Booking ahead is a good idea but doesn't always guarantee a powered site especially at weekends.

Situated just behind the Council Chambers and PO but access is from the road to Savage River. We stayed in this park because of earlier reports on this site - and we're pleased we did. This is not your usual large commercial caravan park but a small basic but entirely adequate facility. Powered sites, hot showers, clean amenities, $20pn, free washer and dryer, about a dozen basic gravel sites. The campground is situated in a pretty lawned park area with a lake that overflows into a spectacular waterfall in the middle of this small town. One pub, a roadhouse, cafe, nice museum, the town is dominated by the Mt Bischoff tin mine. Once the biggest in the world it has been closed for some years. The town has gone to a lot of trouble to welcome tourists and it is worthwhile spending some time in the area. It is an ideal base to drive to Corinna and do the brilliant Pieman River Cruise. It is 62km to Corinna, 36km of bitumen to Savage River and the rest an excellent silicon based road (watch out for trucks). This stretch is called 'the white road' for obvious reasons. Pick up the amenities key at either the council chambers or the roadhouse.

Old Bass Hwy, Wynyard. Ph: 03 6442 1998. Pets allowed, on leash at all times. Dogs not allowed on beach 10am to 6pm during peak season.

Manager's name is Graeme and Cheryl. Cheryl still checks the amenities blocks, wiping out the showers/basins late at night. You are not allowed to drive on the grass and park cars on the roadway. All sites have concrete pad that the caravan/motorhome must be parked on with awning over the grass. Friendly staff, staff explained park layout and facilities. Good value for money ($27 2A per night). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to only some sites, were clean, condition is very good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, sites will accommodate medium to large vans, no sites are shaded, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. No playground, no pool. Suitable for a week or more, suitable for families, park is considered suitable for mobility impaired persons.
Likes: Next to the beach, good boardwalk along the beach which can be used to walk dogs.
Dislikes: The gents shower heads are too low and of a type that gives out small thin stream.

Manager's name is Graeme and Cheryl. I was quite impressed to see Cheryl checking the amenities block, and wiping out the showers, at 11:40 PM, when I visited there after a night out with family. She said she always likes to check before she goes to bed. You are not allowed to drive on the grass, although we were told to park our caravan on the grass because the site was "too close to the one beside us". We stayed there again on our last night in Tasmania, as my brother lives in Wynyard, and, once again, found our rear door did not open onto the quite large slab (not the fault of the park). This park was ideally situated for us, an easy walk to the shops, and midway between my brother's Fish and Chip shop on the wharf, and his home, along the beach in the opposite direction. Cost $25 per couple.

About 3 km east of Wynyard, on the coast road, well signed. Heading west on Bass Hwy, take Wynyard turnoff onto Old Bass Hwy. Family Parks member. Ph: 03 6442 2291. Pets allowed.

Manager's name is Rod Walker. Very friendly staff. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($34 2A per night, ensuite, peak season). Ensuite was clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, exhaust fans/good ventilation. Clean heated pool is shaded, kid-safe pool area. Suitable for few days.
Likes: The heated indoor pool and spa, adults only after 7pm.
Dislikes: Extremely difficult to negotiate into the ensuite sites, which is done from public outside road.
Local Information: Midway between Burnie and Stanley, Wynyard is ideally placed for some great day trips, The Nut at Stanley, a most stunning beach called Boat Harbor Beach, Fossil Bluff, Table Cape, Dip Falls to see the falls and The Big Tree. Best fish meal bought from the Wynyard fishing wharf. Don't miss the antique car display at the Wynyard Info Centre.

Treasure Island Caravan Park, Zeehan
Click here for park details on My Park List
Follow signage. 35 mins drive to Strahan, along a reasonable road, Hurst Street, 1 km NE of PO. Part of the Treasure Island Group. Ph: 03 6471 6633. Pets allowed.

Manager's name is Lorraine & Tim Hughes. Average staff friendliness, average staff response to complaints, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Poor value for money ($27 2A per night, powered). Inadequate number of amenities, are close to only some sites, cleanliness was average, condition is poor, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Inadequate number of tourist sites, some unlevel sites, poor night lighting, sites will accommodate medium to large vans, no sites with annex slabs, shade to some sites, drive-through sites. Basic laundry, no rec room, camp kitchen, no wireless internet available, you can use your mobile wireless (carrier used was Telstra, reception quality was 4). Quiet, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, no permanents. UC gas bbq (free), dismal bbq area atmosphere. No pool. Suitable for overnighter.
Dislikes: Very poor drainage, unlevel sites, water pressure only good enough to fill tank not enough pressure to hook up on some sites, septic odour near some sites, lack of amenities only two toilets and two showers in each of men's & ladies. The 'unisex' separate unit with one shower and two toilets did not qualify as 'unisex' as the partitions between toilets were nowhere near the required 'floor to ceiling' therefore lacking in privacy (the shower was private). The free BBQ was domestic type within the area called camp kitchen. Did not like the park at all; would not choose to stay again; only stayed this time as all others near to Strahan were full
Parking: Ample space
Local Information: Zeehan offers nothing except the museum, which I am told is worth seeing, but we did not visit. Most other shops are either closed down or limited. There are two hotels; only one serves meals in addition there is a hotel/motel that serves meals and one take away shop. There are two fuel outlets that only offer credit card purchases as they are not manned.
Roads: It is still the nearest 'overflow' for visits to Strahan when both parks in Strahan are booked out. The road between Zeehan & Strahan is good and takes about 35 mins

I believe that the owners at this park were new. Quite friendly, and helpful. Shady park. Amenities block small, 2 showers and 2 toilets only, not enough at the time we were there. There was a problem with the showers blocking and flooding the area on our last morning there (no doubt this will have been fixed). Plenty of hot water, pressure good. Dryer in laundry very slow. Another area where you need to book ahead in the peak times. We were unable to get into either Cradle Mountain or Strahan, and the sites here appeared to be mostly occupied.
Local information: Museum is huge, well worth a visit, but allow plenty of time. Spray tunnel drive worth doing, but a bit scary when your side mirrors are touching the sides of the tunnel in the dark!
