Manuka Campground, Arthur River, Arthur-Pieman Conservation Area
UPDATED REPORT NEEDED

Cost $5.00 per night. Very clean toilets for both sexes and there is tap water - no showers. Site has bbq fires. Grassed areas and really lovely and restful. You just camp where you like and it is self-registration. If you are doing one of the Arthur River cruises this campground is the perfect place to stop. The road into Arthur River was fine although it was dirt for the last few kms it wasn't a problem. Would stay again.
Campground Rating 4: Considering what one wants out of a campground and we wanted clean toilets, flat sites and peace.

Burnie Holiday Caravan Park, Burnie
Was called Ocean View Caravan Park. 253 Bass highway. Ph: 03 6431 1925. Member of Treasure Island Group.
UPDATED REPORT NEEDED

Good park, very helpful staff. Excellent TV reception. Very friendly staff, no complaints, staff offered tourist advice. Price was as expected, good value for money ($20 2A per night powered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good there was adequate hot water, exhaust fans/good ventilation. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, concrete annex slabs, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Basic laundry, no rec room, van parking. Quiet, plenty of shade. Dogs on leash. Clean free gas bbq, congenial UC bbq area, bbq area lighting. Good playground in average condition. Clean pool is shaded, kid-safe pool area, tables and chairs provided, heated. A well maintained park.
Likes: Level grass sites. Close to beach. Manager very helpful and organised site close to amenities for my disabled wife. Sites reasonably big (for Tasmania).
Dislikes: Tight turn into a narrow entrance from highway, only the sign convinced me that it was indeed the entrance to a caravan park. Roads narrow.
Parking: Just enough room to park in front of office.
Park Rating 3: Suitable for a week or more.

Cosy Cabins Cradle Mountain, Cradle Mountain, Cradle Mountain - Lake St Clair National Park
Also known as Cradle Mountain Tourist Park. Cradle Valley, main road, near Cradle Mountain Transit Centre. Park is located 2km from the entrance of the Cradle Mountain World Heritage National Park. Ph: 03 6492 1395 or 1800 068 574. No pets allowed.
This is the only caravan park which is right at the entrance to Cradle Mountain. It is quite expensive, but is also one of the best laid-out parks we have stayed at, with excellent amenities. Even the powered sites are well separated from each other, with little bays made in the forest, and gravelled surfaces, which are a good idea in such a high rainfall area. The architect designed amenities block and the camp kitchen building are outstanding. The kitchen has huge open fireplaces, with all wood generously supplied, and full cooking and barbecue facilities in a completed enclosed, insulated building. In a cold climate, this is luxurious! The camp store was well stocked, even selling its own cleanskin wines. We were there at a relatively quiet time, and it would get crowded in the peak season. There are only nine powered sites, so you need to book. It cost us $40 for two people for a powered site, but, considering the amenities and the remote area, we thought it was good value for money. Friendly management. Laundry, rec room, good camp kitchen, kiosk, disabled facilities, van parking by management. Very good park atmosphere. Clean UC gas bbq (free), with a congenial atmosphere, lit at night, with seating provided. Suitable for a few days, the park was well maintained.
Parking: Some sites are small - tell them when you book if you have a big rig.

Report submitted by Jan and Michael, Victoria.

Very friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($30 A1 2C per night). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to only some sites, were clean, condition is very good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, disabled facilities. Adequate number of tourist sites, some level sites, good night lighting, large sites, good rec room, good camp kitchen. Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere, no permanents. No playground, no pool. Suitable for a week or more, well maintained park.
Likes: Very convenient location - good base for exploring Cradle Mountain. Bushy environment with wildlife present in park. Fantastic camp kitchen with open fires.
Dislikes: Drinking water is untreated and requires boiling before use - it would be preferable to bring your own.
Added Touches: Ranger activities.
Roads: Good.

Cynthia Bay Campground, Lake St Clair, Cradle Mountain - Lake St Clair National Park
Located in the Lake St Calire National Park, near Derwent Bridge. Ph: 03 6289 1137. No pets allowed.
To stay here you first need a National Parks Pass. The campground is a separate operation and not part of National Parks, making a night here a very expensive exercise. The campground has sites for caravans/motorhomes and tents and all sites are on dirt (read mud after snow or rain), unlevel and with power only. There are 2 drive through sites with the rest a mix of different sizes and mosly on a significant slope. No water or sullage. Many campers were complaining of being given innacurate or unreliable information by staff when booking in. The toilets and showers are old and often smelly and dirty. This is partly due to the large volume of people using them, many of whom arrive after a 3 day walk. There was another smaller block at the other end of the campground which we did not see until we were leaving. However, if the park were full we could not see how these facilities could cope. There is little lighting, but as this is a national park that is to be expected. Many foreign tourists had negative comments about the ground, making this an issue for us all. Unfriendly staff. Price was higher than expected, poor value for money ($25 2A powered). Inadequate number of amenities, are close to most sites, were dirty, condition is poor, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, extra charge for shower, paper towels/dryer provided, mostly unlevel sites, good night lighting, hard to negotiate into site. Basic laundry, basic rec room, good camp kitchen. Quiet, plenty of shade. No playground, no pool. Suitable for overnighter.
Likes: The wildlife all around and under our van.
Dislikes: the price.

Crayfish Creek Van & Cabin Park, Crayfish Creek
East of Stanley. Ph: 03 6443 4228.
Manager's name is Carolyn & Dale Newall. We felt this park had seen better days. It showed signs of better times, but now is poorly maintained. There was tall grass around electrical points and taps, and when commenting to managers, they said the whipper snipper would break things. This was no excuse for poor maintenance of important things. Everything seemed to be about more money - expensive showers, excessive costs to use open fires, etc. Could be a great park, is a lovely spot, but I wouldn't go back. Park is showing its age. Average staff friendliness, bad staff response to complaints, staff explained park layout and facilities. Inadequate number of amenities, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is reasonable, water pressure is bad, there was inadequate hot water, extra charge for shower. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, large sites, very few concrete annex slabs, shade to most sites, adequate taps close by. Good laundry, good rec room, good camp kitchen, kiosk. Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere. No bbqs. Excellent playground in average condition. No pool. Suitable for few days.
Likes: Large sites, privacy. Delineation between sites. The camp kitchen was nice. Would have been nicer if we knew where it was though - weren't shown or told.
Dislikes: Paying for showers was an abomination. This must have added $5 at least per day onto costs for 1 adult, 2 kids. And then the showers were poor and short! There were also only 2 showers in the only ladies block, and a poor supply of hot water. Firepots - was something like $10 for a "permit" (nothing official - from the park), then a fee per night, and $10 for first load of wood was compulsory - and it was about a half wheelbarrow of small pine pieces. Plus a $20 deposit. When leaving, they made you put any excess wood on their pile - to on-sell! When coming over for the inspection (which was just rude anyway) the manager didn't bring the $20 and had to go back and get it - like she was expecting to keep it... this really spoiled our visit. Kids loved the playground, but it was in dire need of an upgrade/maintenance.
Parking: Parking all good.
Added Touches: Can have open fire - but see hefty costs above.
Local Information: Near Stanley and the nut.
Roads: Just off the highway - all good.

Abel Tasman Caravan Park, Devonport
Wright Street. This park is approx 800 m from the Spirit of Tasmania Ferry Terminal, on the beach and river. Ph: 03 6427 8794.
The amenities block we used was still in a state of disrepair, as previously reported, showers especially, but were clean, and there was plenty of water. Only a small round stool to put our clothes on. Staff friendly and helpful, very busy at the time (we had arrived from the boat, as had many others.) We were offered a site with a slab, as we were staying for 2 nights. I found this quite amusing while we were putting ourselves on site, as I had forgotten that our new caravan has a rear door. The slabs were very small, and we went nowhere near having the door near the slab. The park itself, needs quite a lot of work done on it, but is in a lovely position, especially if you have never travelled on the Spirit of Tasmania before, and like to see it moving in and out of Devonport. Still appears to be a large number of permanents.

UPDATED REPORT NEEDED

A good park for the price. It is mostly filled with houses (real houses, not vans with large annexes) and cabins. Our neighbour had a beautiful home with a new Mercedes in the garage. All tourist sites have ensuites and some are drive though. Large car park where you can leave your van after checkout if you have a night sailing. Good TV reception, no digital. Didn't find out if pets are allowed. Friendly staff, no complaints, staff offered tourist advice, van parking assistance provided by staff, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, good value for money ($20 2A per night powered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to all sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, dry change area. Adequate number of tourist sites, all level sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by, basic laundry, no rec room, secure entry van parking. Quiet, open and roomy, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere. Too many permanents. No bbqs, no playground, no pool. A well maintained park.
Likes: The price was good at $20 with ensuite. The park is flat, with cement for car and van, and grass for awning.
Dislikes: Laundry inadequate, only 2 machines and 1 dryer.
Parking: Parking area beside office.
Local Information: Plenty to see and do in Devonport. Two days was too short.
Park Rating 3.5: Suitable for a week or more.

Cosy Cabins, Devonport
From ferry terminal, follow road to first set of lights. Turn left into Tarelon Street and follow to end. Ph: 03 6427 9933.
This is a fairly new park and is in immaculate condition. Facilities are adequate and are kept spotless. They are generally OK but for a modern designed amenities block it is frustrating and annoying to find shower cubicles without a bench and inadequate hooks. Well sited for Spirit of Tasmania (2 minutes to terminal). Late checkout allowed on day of departure. The main problem with the park is that it is exposed to wind. Would stay again. Suitable for overnight or longer.

Gowrie Park Wilderness Cabins, Gowrie Park
14km south of Sheffield, about 1km past O'Neill Creek picnic/campsite on left hand side. Ph: 04 2724 6081.
Finally - a park that wants your favourite pet and close to Cradle Mountain. This park is an old converted hydro village. It is not flash but at just $10 per night ($5 per person for a powered site) it is great value. Beside Mt Roland and just 15 kms south of Sheffield it is an easy 45 minute drive to Cradle Mountain National Park. The showers and toilets are old but tidy, the laundry has a free washing machine. There are no taps around vans so stop by the office and fill your tank with pure rainwater before going on site. We were very happy to leave our dog in the van and drive the trip up to Cradle Mountain - just spectacular. A great compromise for those of us who travel with pets and want to visit national parks.
Date 04/2008. Park Rating 3: Value and position
Report submitted by Maureen And Richard Hay.

Manager's name is Patrick. Site is part of the old Gowrie Park Hydro Village. We stayed a week and had no problems. Nearest fuel and shopping is at Sheffield. Good, friendly management. Reception was rarely open but no worries, just pick a site and Patrick will come round about 6 pm to book you in. Excellent value for money ($5 per person per night for a powered site). Average amenities, close to sites, were clean, there was adequate hot water. Good sites, are fairly level and were well covered with dormant grass, poor water quality. Mainly set up for backpackers, only has 10 powered sites. Laundry, rec room has free internet, TV and open fireplace (wood supplied free), late checkout allowed (past noon), share kitchen with backpackers. Excellent TV from ABC and SBS but forget the rest. Good atmosphere to park, quiet. Clean UC wood bbq (free), lit at night, with seating provided. Suitable for a few days, the park was well maintained, the park can be considered kid-safe.
Likes: Quiet, peaceful, friendly, good central point to view this area from.
Dislikes: Mains water has heavy tannin contamination but adequate rainwater supplied for drinking.
Roads: Good road in from Sheffield.
Date 02/2008. Park Rating 2.5: This is excellent value for money but it isn't a resort type site.

Latrobe Mersey River Caravan Park, Latrobe
1 River Road/Bells Parade. 8 minutes drive from the Spirit of Tasmania ferry Terminal. Ph: 03 6426 1944.
The park is for tourists only with no permanent residents, has 40 powered sites and numerous unpowered sites, within a short walk to the CBD and set in a beautiful, 100 acre park land beside the Mersey river which is full of trout, and platypus are easy to watch from the banks. Good swimming areas are set out within the picnic areas, a truly beautiful spot so close to the ferry. The best park we have experienced and we have travelled extensively throughout Australia.

Mole Creek Caravan Park, Mole Creek
Around 4 km West of Mole Creek at a road junction. Ph: 03 6363 1150.
Water is untreated drawn from creek, very low water pressure, not suitable for filling caravan tanks. A small park in a pleasant creek-side semi-rural location. Bonus: wooden slatted mats in showers. Average staff friendliness. Price was as expected, good value for money ($17 2A per night powered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to only some sites, were clean, condition is reasonable, water pressure is bad, there was adequate hot water, extra charge for shower. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, average sized sites, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by. Basic laundry, no rec room. Quiet, open & roomy park, no permanents.
Likes: Pleasant location, centrally located to a very scenic area. Clothes drier worked really well.
Dislikes: Caretaker not on site but visits to collect fee, or can walk to his house up the road but he may not be home. The block is locked until you get a key; there is a toilet for day area picnickers, but couldn't get into shower. Water pressure so low that washing machine took long time to fill, resulting in a queue for the machine.
Roads: Bitumen road access. Park is not suitable for in wet seasons or when creek floods.

Larger sheltered area, pit toilets, water from tank (boil before drinking), lots of nooks and crannies to camp in. No power as this is a campground. Told by a local that it can get crowded over Christmas / New year period. River and beach a short walk from most sites. $2.20 per adult per night using honesty box system. We did see rangers come and go during our stay.

Small area close to beach with toilet block. Some caravans were there and had made fences from shade cloth therefore sealing off their own area. We drove through and were given dirty looks, not inviting so we drove on. Apparently locals come over summer and have their own patch of beachfront for their caravans.
Campground Rating 2: for uncomfortable atmosphere.

Penguin Caravan Park, Penguin
The park is at Johnstone's Beach, signposted from the main street. It is walking distance to the shops. Ph: 03 6437 2785.
This is a small independent park, in a lovely setting right on the coast. It has a large number of permanents, but the best ocean-side sites are reserved for temporary stays. The amenities are older, but very clean and well maintained, with good unlimited hot water. Very good management, friendly management, management responsive to comments, management was helpful. Good value for money, we paid $20 for two people for an unpowered site right on the water. Good amenities. Quiet, open and roomy park.
Local Information: Penguin is only about twenty minutes drive from Devonport, and we went straight from the ferry terminal to the caravan park on arrival. It is a small town with a market every Saturday, which claims to be the largest undercover market in Tasmania. It is mainly an arts and crafts market, plus a huge second-hand, bric-a-brac and antiques section. You can walk there from the caravan park.

Large grassy sites, some not level. Some drive through but others very easy to negotiate. Good TV reception, no digital. Friendly staff, no complaints, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, good value for money ($16 2A per night powered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, cleanliness was average, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, extra charge for shower, exhaust fans/good ventilation, disabled facilities. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, large sites, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Basic laundry, no rec room, kiosk, disabled facilities, dump point, secure entry, van parking. Peaceful, open and roomy, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere. No pets allowed. Clean 20 cent electric bbq in congenial UC area, lighting, seating provided. Basic playground in average condition. No pool, a well maintained park.
Likes: Lots of room. Grass sites. Close to the beach.
Dislikes: Site not level, but we asked to be near the toilets. Most sites seemed fine. Showers cost 20c for 3 minutes, and coin slot is outside cubicle.
Park Rating 3.5: Suitable for a week or more.

Queenstown Cabin And Tourist Park, Queenstown
17 Grafton Street. Turn into town and follow signs right through town. Straight through town past railway station turn right at roundabout and follow road about 1 kilometre park on left. Follow signs from either Murchison or Lyell Highways. Ph: 03 6471 1332. All pets allowed.
Manager's name is W. Anthony. This park is very over priced, poor value for money, but there is nowhere else to go. The sites are gravel and we arrived in the wet and found only a few sites without water lying in them. The power kept shutting off to our van when we tried to make toast or boil water, so it must not be up to the right standard. The dirty old amenities were a disappointment, especially as their website advertises the park as having modern new amenities which is totally false, and I feel the outdated power supply really needs to be looked at, as well as daily cleaning and a bit of maintenance, which is what you expect for the price. Friendly staff, bad staff response to complaints, staff offered tourist advice. Price was much higher than expected, poor value for money ($30.00 2A per night, powered, off-peak season). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to all sites, were dirty, condition is poor, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, paper towels/dryer provided. Inadequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, small sites, no sites with concrete annex slabs, very few sites are shaded, drive-through sites, hard to negotiate into site, poor water quality, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Basic laundry, basic rec room. Quiet, claustrophobic park, plenty of shade, no permanents. No playground, no pool. Suitable for few days.
Likes: It is the only caravan park in Queenstown so it enabled us to stay in the town to have a good look around, and it is close to town.
Dislikes: The amenities are very old, early seventies tiles, etc and we stayed for 4 nights and didn't see any evidence of cleaning. Amenities definitely weren't cleaned on the 2 weekend days and yet Friday night was the busiest night.
Parking: No one was given any parking instructions. Everyone who came in paid at reception then asked another tourist where they should park. Sites have insufficient room to park your car
Local Information: Queenstown is a great town to spend a few days in, some lovely drives and seeing the area is a must.
Roads: Road conditions are as you would expect for Tasmanian highways, narrow, winding and hilly and you do have to take more care, but driving is a pleasant experience at a slower pace with the beautiful scenery.

Friendly staff, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was much higher than expected, poor value for money ($150 2A per week, powered, peak season). Basic laundry, basic rec room. Quiet, not enough shade, family/friendly atmosphere, no permanents. Clean UC gas bbq (pay), bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. No playground, no pool. Suitable for few days.
Likes: Relatively quiet
Dislikes: Amenities only cleaned sometimes, maintenance lacking, no staff at park between 12 and 4pm most days, no security at the park and neighbourhood dogs play in the park.
Parking: outside on road
Local Information: Interesting town to visit, excellent museum, wilderness railway and proximity to many lakes, waterfalls and wilderness walks.

Pioneer Park Camping Ground, Riana
Located 10km South of Penguin, between Riana and South Riana. From Penguin, turn toward Riana, go past the cricket oval, past the service station and general store (combined) and the park is on your left bounded by mission brown fencing. Dogs on leash.
As mentioned by other contributors, this is a volunteer-run facility. For the most part it is quiet, however during our stay what must have been local hoons persisted in driving into the park and doing very dusty burnouts on the gravel section of the roadway. A disadvantage of being volunteer-run means there is no onsite management - this combined with poor mobile phone service means contacting police can be a problem, particularly if you were the only ones staying in the park and it was the middle of the night. Perhaps the local businesses who might read this comment might assist with identifying these hoons who will, without doubt, cause an otherwise excellent little park to be avoided. Very friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice. Price was $10 2A per night powered. Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to all sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, extra charge for shower. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly unlevel sites, poor night lighting, average sized sites, adequate taps close by. Plenty of shade, no permanents. Clean bbq. Basic playground. No pool. Suitable for few days.
Likes: Apart from comments made earlier in this report, the park is a nice haven for birds and other wildlife.
Dislikes: The town needs to quickly find a solution to the problems of local hoons or they will lose the direct income from the park and the two nearby shops will lose the accompanying business.

Run by local community volunteers who come and collect fees and do cleaning each day. Large area well back from road. Very quiet - hardly any visitors at a time when most parks were fairly full. Bonus: Slatted wooden mat in shower. No laundry, toilet and showers in "pioneer" look buildings, partly open and cold at night. Very pleasant place to stay. Very friendly staff. Price was lower than expected, good value for money ($10 2A per night powered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to only some sites, were clean, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, extra charge for shower. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly unlevel sites, poor night lighting, large sites, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by, no rec room. Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, no permanents. Dogs on leash. No pool. A well maintained park.
Likes: Quiet and peaceful, run by the community. Huge camp area, and so few other campers. Good hot showers for only 20 cents. Cheap. A very pleasant place to stay.
Dislikes: Showers in "pioneer" style huts were basic and unlined, open air at top, cold at night. Fine for summer Slight slope to ground (needed to use levelling block)

Rosebery Caravan And Cabin Park, Rosebery
Signs from the highway in town. Ph: 03 6250 2340. Pets at manager's discretion.
This is a park you would only stay in if desperate. We had arrived in the town after driving in rain all day and just wanted to stay put for the night. It was poor value for money, but a safe place to park overnight. We didn't ever see any staff. We arrived in office hours and made 3 attempts to pay for our night. The whole park was old and poorly maintained with power outlets not coping with modern caravans, kept throwing the circuit breaker. The road into the park is also not suitable for a larger van to negotiate. Sites are uneven and wet and another resident showed us how to re set the circuit breaker and commented that the wiring was sub standard but you can't get any tradesmen to that area to work on things like that. Price was much higher than expected, poor value for money ($25.00 2A, off-peak season). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to only some sites, cleanliness was average, condition is poor, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Inadequate number of tourist sites, mostly unlevel sites, poor night lighting, average sized sites, no sites with concrete annex slabs, no sites are shaded, poor water quality. Quiet, open & roomy park, not enough shade, no permanents. No bbqs, no playground, no pool. Suitable for overnighter.
Likes: Beside the Stitt River and a short walk to the Stitt River Falls.
Dislikes: Overpriced. Poorly kept and maintained. No one in office to pay, just a sign that read to come back in office hours which we did 3 times and still no one was there.
Parking: No one there to tell us.
Local Information: Interesting drives in the area to lakes and dams, and waterfalls.

Stanley Cabin and Tourist Park, Stanley
Wharf Road, 200m SE of PO. Ph: 03 6458 1266 or 1800 444 818. BIG4 member.
This park is ideally situated along Tatlow's Beach just below the Nut. There are lots of cabins, lush lawns, bunkhouse, modern camp kitchen with TV and a luxurious office. Considerable renovations have been completed since our last stay here around ten years ago and more work is being done. It seems to be mainly a tourist park with over 30 cabins and over 50 powered sites. The town supermarket is next door to the park. We were allocated a beachside site for our 16' van but it was quite small with barely room to park the car and it was very worn with little grass. Clearly these sites are in greatest demand. Most sites had good windbreaks. There are 2 large amenities blocks. The one we used was only of average cleanliness. There were cobwebs in the toilets and no soap in the dispensers for the duration of our 5 day stay. In this day and age it is a basic requirement of caravan parks to supply soap and hand drying facilities in the amenities block. It is disappointing that so many fail to satisfy this basic responsibility. This aside the park has a good atmosphere and provides a pleasant stay. The price of $22 per night 2A was good value.
Likes: Large well laid out park right on the beach
Dislikes: No liquid soap in the amenities
Local Information: Stanley is the perfect base to explore the NW part of Tasmania. Attractions include, Dismal Swamp, the Stanley seal tour, Highfield House, Dip Falls, Arthur River, Sumac Lookout, etc.

$35 per night 2A 3C powered. Management appeared indifferent when we booked in we were told there was no refund due to the weather (it was raining). Clean but old amenities, toilet and shower in different blocks. Our site was level and size was ok. Laundry and camp kitchen were old, not all hot plates working on one stove. Nice sheltered bbq area which overlooked the playground. Free bbq and washing up facilities in congenial and family friendly area. No swimming pool. Lighting in toilet area was dismal.

Resident managers. Average staff friendliness, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was higher than expected, reasonable value for money ($30 2A per night, powered, shoulder season). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, separate bathroom, paper towels/dryer provided. Inadequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, concrete annex slabs to some sites, shade to some sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Good laundry, no rec room. Quiet, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere, no permanents. Clean UC electric bbq, congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting Good playground in good condition. No pool. Suitable for few days, suitable for families, well maintained park, park is considered kid-safe.
Likes: Close to attractions without being in busy middle of town. Mats in showers.
Dislikes: Amenities were clean but some shower cubicles were small, all were old and paint peeling/water damaged walls.
Parking: No special parking while waiting to book in, stop on side of common road.
Added Touches: Some sites individually fringed by small shrubs.
Local Information: Walking/ cycling distance to most attraction meeting points. West Coast Wilderness Railway leaves from Strahan, 5min drive away. Ocean Beach 6kms away, worth visiting to see sunset over water.

It rains 300 days a year on average in Strahan. The powered sites in this park were small and mainly gravel with some lawn but they were very wet underfoot - cement slabs and gravel would better suit the conditions but drainage needs to be improved. A friendly welcome with useful tourist advice provided. The park is well laid out, mainly cabins in one section with the powered sites over a small and narrow bridge. Amenities consist of 4 ensuite units plus a couple of separate toilets. They were clean and well equipped. What happens in Strahan is that most people leave early to go on the cruise or the train trip so there is a rush on the amenities and they are under pressure until 8.30am, even in September. There seems to be less powered sites (I counted 18) than previously reported with more cabins being installed so it would be wise to book in busier periods. TV reception was surprisingly good with ABC digital reception quite clear. There is an independent Wifi internet service available in the park. $25pn with discount for 2 people was good value in this expensive town but the powered sites could be improved quite a lot. Like most parks in Tassie there is reported to be a Platypus in the creek. Very good management.
Likes: Friendly management.
Dislikes: Poor drainage and inadequate amenities.

The comments and ratings apply to cabin section only. We decided to leave our van and travel the west by car only. The cabins were basic and when compared to what one gets elsewhere, a bit overpriced. The park is well maintained and worth another stay. The caravan section seemed tight and due to a narrow bridge in the centre of the park, larger vans might have difficulty accessing. Management was helpful and friendly. Suitable for overnight or a few days. As a general comment on Strahan, apart from the river cruise and train trip there is very little else to do or interest the majority of people. We would question whether it is worth the stress of towing a van over some very steep, narrow and winding roads for a 1 or 2 day stop.

Tarraleah Highland Village & Holiday Park, Tarraleah
Tarraleah is approximately halfway between Strahan and Hobart. Turn off highway to Tarraleah; signs in town. Ph: 03 6289 3222. Pets at manager's discretion. You book in and pay at the cafe 300 m down the street.
This is not like a caravan park, but you stay there for the experience of the township. The price was higher than we expected because it is very basic and once you pay the money, you just treat it as a camp ground with facilities and power and water. The park is purpose built and really is geared to accommodate large groups, the caravan sites are a new extension but a very small part of the whole camp situation. It is a peaceful overnight stop to see the town itself. Average staff friendliness, staff offered tourist advice. Price was higher than expected, reasonable value for money ($26 2A per night, powered, off-peak season). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to only some sites, cleanliness was average, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, paper towels/dryer provided. Adequate number of tourist sites, some unlevel sites, poor night lighting, small sites, no sites with concrete annex slabs, no sites are shaded, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by. Basic laundry, no rec room. Peaceful, open & roomy park. No bbqs, no playground, no pool. Suitable for overnighter, well maintained park.
Likes: The peace and quiet and Tarraleah being a very different town, one that has to be experienced to appreciate

No longer a Family Parks member. It is basically a paddock with a row of power outlets. The sites are mostly flat, although some are quite a distance from the amenities block. We paid $26 2A. Manager's name is Janice. This is quite a good park. Most sites are a little small and rather crowded but are beautifully grassed and not too much of a walk to amenities. Roadways are too narrow because of sites being so small that cars have to park partly on the road, so parking vans and leaving was not easy, but this was due to it being Easter. In a quieter time, this is probably one of the better parks in Tasmania. Friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was higher than expected, reasonable value for money ($31.00 2A per night, powered, peak season). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, extra charge for shower, separate bathroom, soap provided, dry change area, paper towels/dryer provided. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, small sites, very few concrete annex slabs, shade to some sites, hard to negotiate into site, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Good laundry, basic rec room, dump point, secure entry. Noisy, claustrophobic park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere, too many permanents. UC, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. Excellent playground. No pool. Suitable for month or longer, suitable for families, well maintained park.
Likes: Green Grass, generally well maintained, walking distance to town and beaches. Plenty of gates leading out to beach and park.
Dislikes: No rules for children riding bikes, etc. As we were there over Easter, there were more children that adults and the children mostly were noisy and uncontrolled riding bikes up and down the roads in groups all day at a faster pace that the speed limit for cars.
Parking: Yes, a small area.
Local Information: Ulverstone is a town where you can do day drives to lots of scenic areas and attractions as well as having lots to see in the town and nearby towns.

This is a large holiday park typical of beachside parks around the country. It has friendly management, clean and renovated amenities, large lawned sites, well equipped laundry and a campers kitchen. You need to pay 20c for a 5 minute shower. It works out to be around $23 per night 2A with the BIG4 discount. Wireless internet is available via Net4. TV reception was mixed. The train runs just past the front gate. Security is excellent with a big fence around the park and key operated gates. The beach is a 2min walk away. The one thing that spoils this park is the number of old and untidy permanent vans scattered around the park.
Likes: Large lawned sites.
Dislikes: Permanent vans.
Local Information: Ulverstone is a large and friendly town with excellent shopping and other facilities. It is midway between Burnie and Devonport and so presents as a good base to see the area. Don't miss the scenic drive to Penguin and the Penguin market on Sundays.

Waratah Camping Ground, Waratah
Smith Street. Waratah is just off the main road between Burnie and Queenstown, roughly halfway. This is a small tin mining town. The village has landscaped the old river into a park complete with lake. This feeds the waterfall right in the middle of town. This small campground is only 40 minutes drive from Cradle Mountain. Turn off Murchison Highway south of Hellyer Gorge. Council owned. Ph: 03 6439 1231.
This is not an official caravan park, but a campground. It is $20 a night and the fees are paid at the council building or out of hours at the local roadhouse. This fee is as we expected. It is simply a parking area, some sites are grassed while others are on blue metal. There is power and water but no sullage. There are 2 round concrete tanks divided down the centre making 3 ensuites and one laundry which has 1 washing machine and 1 dryer, both free. The fees are as we expected and good value for money. Waratah is a very beautiful very small town on the west coast with a gorge and waterfall right in the town, and a campground such as this allows you to experience a few days easily in the area. We would definitely stay again. Price was as expected. All pets allowed. Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to only some sites, cleanliness was average, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, large sites, no sites with concrete annex slabs, no sites are shaded. Good laundry. Peaceful. Clean electric bbq (free). Stayed 3 nights @ $20 per night, great value. Only 20 sites for vans, some on lawned area other on gravel. Lovely spot for a few days. Amenities are unisex ensuite type, clean and adequate. 60 kms from Cradle Mountain area and Dove Lake. Roadhouse is only place to buy groceries so suggest stocking up beforehand. Booking ahead is a good idea but doesn't always guarantee a powered site especially at weekends.

Situated just behind the Council Chambers and PO but access is from the road to Savage River. We stayed in this park because of earlier reports on this site - and we're pleased we did. This is not your usual large commercial caravan park but a small basic but entirely adequate facility. Powered sites, hot showers, clean amenities, $20pn, free washer and dryer, about a dozen basic gravel sites. The campground is situated in a pretty lawned park area with a lake that overflows into a spectacular waterfall in the middle of this small town. One pub, a roadhouse, cafe, nice museum, the town is dominated by the Mt Bischoff tin mine. Once the biggest in the world it has been closed for some years. The town has gone to a lot of trouble to welcome tourists and it is worthwhile spending some time in the area. It is an ideal base to drive to Corinna and do the brilliant Pieman River Cruise. It is 62km to Corinna, 36km of bitumen to Savage River and the rest an excellent silicon based road (watch out for trucks). This stretch is called 'the white road' for obvious reasons. Pick up the amenities key at either the council chambers or the roadhouse.

This is a delightful little town with an amazing gorge and waterfall right in the middle of the town. We paid $15 2A per night for a powered site. The camping ground is small and beside the lake and very picturesque. The amenities consist of 2 round cement tanks each divided into 2 rooms with 2 doors. That makes 3 en-suites, the 4th is the laundry, basic, but with a free washing machine and dryer. This we found to be an adequate number considering the size of the campground which does have some taps to connect to. The area was not grassed but a type of bitumen, which we found sensible for a high rainfall area. There is no playground but there are picnic tables close by and rubbish bins. The town only has a population of 360 and has a beautiful old hotel which has lovely meals and an upstairs room with a window to frame the gorge and waterfall. It is a good position to use as a base for Cradle Valley and the Savage River. You get the key to en-suites from the Council building situated beside the camping ground, which is where you also pay. On weekends this is done at the local Service Station. Showers are free with plenty of hot water, and they were clean. The lighting was reasonable and sites were level. We would recommend this one as different and one not to be missed.

Beach Retreat Tourist Park, Wynyard
Old Bass Highway, Wynyard. Ph: 03 6442 1998.
Manager is Graeme. I was quite impressed to see "her" checking the amenities block, and wiping out the showers, at 11:40 PM, when I visited there after a night out with family. She said she always likes to check before she goes to bed. You are not allowed to drive on the grass, although we were told to park our caravan on the grass because the site was "too close to the one beside us". We stayed there again on our last night in Tasmania, as my brother lives in Wynyard, and, once again, found our rear door did not open onto the quite large slab (not the fault of the park). This park was ideally situated for us, an easy walk to the shops, and midway between my brother's Fish and Chip shop on the wharf, and his home, along the beach in the opposite direction. Cost $25 per couple.

Manager's name is Graeme & Cheryl Gilmore. Average staff friendliness. Price was higher than expected ($22.00 2A per night powered). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to all sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, concrete annex slabs, adequate taps close by, good camp kitchen. Open & roomy park, not enough shade. Congenial bbq area atmosphere. No pool. Suitable for few days, well maintained park.
Likes: Convenient drive from the ferry when arriving in Tasmania
Dislikes: Perhaps managers could consider reducing the list of nineteen rules on the back of the receipt. It is only necessary to outline the rule to keep dogs under control once at check-in, not four times - especially when dogs come in for lots of special mention in the nineteen printed rules. Also, the same applies to the requirement not to drive on the grass and the need to return the key when leaving - once is enough!

Manager's name is Rod Walker. Very friendly staff. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($34 2A per night, ensuite, peak season). Ensuite was clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, exhaust fans/good ventilation. Clean heated pool is shaded, kid-safe pool area. Suitable for few days.
Likes: The heated indoor pool and spa, adults only after 7pm.
Dislikes: Extremely difficult to negotiate into the ensuite sites, which is done from public outside road.
Local Information: Midway between Burnie and Stanley, Wynyard is ideally placed for some great day trips, The Nut at Stanley, a most stunning beach called Boat Harbor Beach, Fossil Bluff, Table Cape, Dip Falls to see the falls and The Big Tree. A small and compact park that located in a area suitable as a base for NW Tasmanian attractions. The sites are not particularly large and are tight, particularly those with en-suite. I believe that the owners at this park were new. Quite friendly, and helpful. Shady park. Amenities block small, 2 showers and 2 toilets only, not enough at the time we were there. There was a problem with the showers blocking and flooding the area on our last morning there (no doubt this will have been fixed). Plenty of hot water, pressure good. Dryer in laundry very slow. Another area where you need to book ahead in the peak times. We were unable to get into either Cradle Mountain or Strahan, and the sites here appeared to be mostly occupied.
