Arno Bay Foreshore Tourist Park, Arno Bay
Park Lane, 1km from post office. On beach next to jetty (fishing) at Arno Bay. Turn off main highway into Arno bay drive to jetty, caravan park on right, turn right at hotel into side street to entrance. Ph: 08 8628 0157. Family Parks member. Pets at manager's discretion.
This is a lovely park and the new owners are working very hard to improve it. Right on the beachfront and next to the jetty, it is a fishing paradise. Re-modeled amenities were kept immaculate, good undercover BBQ, lots of grass. Cost was $22.50 after FPA discount. Across the road from a great hotel with Tuesday schnitzel nights at $8 or Friday Pizza nights at $20. Very quiet and peaceful.

Manager's name is Sonya & Graham Hosking. This is a small but very nice park in a very small town. Very friendly Managers. Right on the foreshore with easy access to the beach and jetty. Plenty of showers, toilets and water. Fish cleaning facilities and a nice BBQ area. Some cement slabs with well maintained grassed sites. Good estuary and sea fishing. Good cabins available. Represented good value for money. Dogs on a leash allowed. Good for a short or long stay. Relatively close to the ferry from the Yorke Peninsula to the Eyre Peninsula (about 50kms).

One of best parks ever. Green, classy and cement pad - awesome. Great fishing. Would have stayed a week if not have to get moving to be in Adelaide for Christmas. One park I am determined to return to for a month. Very friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice, van parking assistance provided by staff, staff helped us at the site. Price was lower than expected, very good value for money ($20 2A per night, powered, shoulder season). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to all sites, were clean, condition is very good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, large sites, concrete annex slabs to most sites, shade to some sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Good laundry. Peaceful, open & roomy park, family/friendly atmosphere. Clean UC gas bbq, congenial bbq area atmosphere. Suitable for month or longer, well maintained park.
Likes: Gorgeous grassed sites, manicured and beautifully maintained
Local Information: Great fishing from jetty at park

The only park in town, on the beach near the jetty. We were last at this park in 1996 when it was a deserted, open, council operated place right on the beach, with a pub behind. We loved it. It's now totally fenced in with no view of the sea and surrounded by cabins and sheds. The sites are miniscule and the place was packed. I found the manager intrusive and bossy. Some of the amenities were closed off despite the crowd. Overall, it's been loved to death, and at $19 I'm not surprised. Average management. Good value for money. Good amenities, adequate number to cater for tourists, close to sites, were clean, were in good condition, water pressure was okay, there was adequate hot water. Poor sites, hard to negotiate in to/out of site. Park atmosphere was okay. Suitable for overnighter, the park was well maintained.
Likes: Handy stopover location. Fishing off jetty if you stay long enough. Lots of people commented on the grassy sites, which the manager spends a lot of time on.
Dislikes: Very small sites, hemmed in by corrugated iron fencing and sheds etc, bossy management, overcrowding.
Added Touches: Fish cleaning tables.

Added Touches: a fish cleaning table is situated at both ends of the park with easy beach access
Local Information: Arno Bay is a lovely clean beach, clear water and a jetty for fishing, a young children's playground is situated adjacent to jetty

Coffin Bay Caravan Park, Coffin Bay
Drive well into township and follow esplanade till you see the caravan park sign - note that entrance to caravan park is on the side road just before the park (there's a big sign telling you this in the corner of the caravan park as you approach), not on the esplanade itself. Ph: 08 8685 4170. Family Parks member. Dogs on leash.

Very friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, good value for money ($24 2A per night, shoulder season). Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, no sites with concrete annex slabs, shade to some sites, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Likes: Very friendly and helpful staff. We had a good shady site and the park had a good atmosphere about it.
Dislikes: Nothing to dislike as far as we were concerned. Some sites on the low part of the park looked a bit bare and did not have much shade - we wouldn't have liked to have been down there.
Parking: Plenty of parking approaching the office.
Local Information: Good fishing, some wonderful scenery around the national park and the local bays.

Manager's name is Dean & Rosey. We both enjoyed our stay and would return. We used the new ablution block and it was very pleasant but I don't know what the other block is like. The speed humps at the entrance are a bit sharp but ok at very low crawl. Very friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, good value for money ($24.00 2A per night powered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is very good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, dry change area, paper towels/dryer provided, exhaust fans/good ventilation, disabled facilities. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by. Basic laundry, no rec room, disabled facilities, dump point. Quiet, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere. Clean UC bbq, bbq area lighting. Good playground in average condition. Suitable for a week or more, suitable for families, well maintained park.
Likes: Our stay was very pleasant, we were up the back of the park near the new amenities block.
Parking: Parking in front of Reception to book in.
Added Touches: Boat ramp and fish cleaning area.
Local Information: Fishing at nearby jetty or on the bay, Meals at the club.
Roads: Bitumen

Manager's name is Dean & Rosey. The only caravan park in Coffin Bay, this has cabins and numerous caravan sites. You may get a visit from roos during the evening, and emus at any time. Friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($23 2A per night powered). Can get a $1 discount for Seniors Card holders. There are three amenities blocks, but all are relatively small. Two of the amenities blocks are getting tired but were clean. They are close to most sites, cleanliness was average, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, separate bathroom, soap provided, paper towels/dryer provided, exhaust fans/good ventilation, disabled facilities. Adequate number of tourist sites, average sized sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by, most of the sites are not level, there is a mix of drive-through and back-in sites, night lighting is adequate. Basic laundry. Quiet, open and roomy, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere. Clean UC electric bbq ($1), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. Basic playground in average condition. No pool. Suitable for a week or more, suitable for families, reasonably well maintained park, park is considered kid-safe.

Manager's name is Dean & Rosey Lewis. Located on esplanade but houses and bushland between park and beach (no real swimming beaches except at boat pier up the road about half a km). Caravan park is on side of hill and has a "split in two" feel about it, one half mainly caravans and the other mainly camping (both powered areas) - caravan half has mostly level sites, other half has better views across bay but undulating sites. We were put in camping section right by esplanade and were allowed to choose site. Lots of large trees in park, grassy and gravel sites - be wary some trees house sea birds that can make lots of mess. Felt exposed as only a metal rail between park and road on camping side (not overly kid safe and easy access for undesirables as park has history of fishing gear being stolen) which was underlined by the need to pay $10 key deposit for amenities (and yes you will lose deposit if you lose your key) - don't let this put you off park as still very nice! Woke up one night to shuffling noise outside but found it was a kangaroo trying to access our food box! Also emus wandered through the park on one day. Nice relaxing atmosphere in park, good management, very clean amenities (2x one new, one older - we accessed the older one and were impressed with cleanliness) and good showers. Good laundry with a nice big freezer, free to use, a very basic playground and there is no pool or rec room. There's a great undercover seated BBQ area but believe there's a fee to use, plus open BBQ near playground. A more relaxed park than expected and a great base to explore region or go fishing. Great walks nearby and park is adjacent to Beachcomber general store/fuel/fishing shop and putt putt golf/post office. Another general store located closer to the jetty about a km away (service lower standard). Great pizzas available at a nearby restaurant (but check ahead for times). Weather-wise much cooler than other areas, 30C a hundred kms north but only 19C in Coffin Bay. Friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, good value for money ($30 2A 2C per night powered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, separate bathroom, soap provided, paper towels/dryer provided. Adequate number of tourist sites, some level sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by. Good laundry, dump point. Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere, no permanents. Clean UC gas bbq ($1), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. Suitable for a week or more, well maintained park.
Likes: Relaxed atmosphere, roomy park, plenty of shade, clean amenities, wildlife that walked through the park including the midnight visitor that we thought to be a thief.
Dislikes: Birds in trees dropping their mess, no rec room, very basic playground which you can't really watch your kids at (as out of line of sight to most sites), not-kid safe really close to esplanade (bearing in mind though we chose the spot so more our fault) and excessive key deposit due to past problems with outsiders.
Added Touches: Really good tourist and other local advice from managers. Very clean amenities, obviously took pride in this. Could hire (free) makeshift fireplaces (old washing tubs on a pole) to have your own fire and could also purchase firewood.
Local Information: Coffin Bay is your old style of fishing town and is a very scenic place to visit - reminds you of Sydney harbour (without the houses of course) with all the backwaters and coves that eventually lead out to sea. Fishing is wonderful if you have a boat, but can also pick up King George Whiting off pier, around rocks near boat ramp (where locals hang out) or at nearby Dutton Bay (about 15km away) jetty. Dutton Bay also has a woolshed museum and nearby Farm Beach is a popular beach launching place for fishers. Lots of great drives around the place, mainly 2WD gravel road, but to access Kirton Peninsula opposite Coffin Bay township 4WD is better. Follow the esplanade for a nice loop drive, also has a long 3km+ Oyster Walk marked trail starting opposite the caravan park follows the esplanade. Nearby National Park ($7.50 entry fee) has a 23km bitumen drive to bottom of Peninsula - well worth it with look outs and plenty of other 4WD roads to turn off to explore/camp. Lots of 4WD opportunities around Coffin Bay. Half-hour drive from Port Lincoln if you want to be close but not there. Enjoyed mini golf putt putt with my oldest son which is located across the (side) road from caravan park - $6.50 adults for 18 holes at time of review.
Roads: Hilly bitumen highway links Port Lincoln to Elliston with bitumen road turn off as marked that goes about 10km into Coffin Bay township - apart from National Park and township itself, that's where bitumen road stops. All other access and tourist roads around area are gravel, some 4WD only - best get tourist advice and maps when in town.

Drive through sites with grass and enough shade. Tarred roads throughout park. Extremely clean and modern amenities block. Another block a bit older, but still extremely clean, even though they did not clean both of them on a Sunday. Plenty of grass around the caravan park. BBQ's $1. Average playground. Free use of freezer so that you can freeze the fish that you may have been lucky enough to catch. Walking distance to shops and Bay. Great walk (Oyster Walk) around the Esplanade. Great fishing spots in the area. Friendly staff, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, very good value for money ($27 2A 2C per night powered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is very good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, paper towels/dryer provided. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, drive-through sites. Good laundry, no rec room. Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere. Dogs on leash. No pool. A well maintained park, park is considered kid-safe.
Likes: A very relaxing park.

Cowell Foreshore Caravan Park, Cowell
Esplanade, 200 m south-west of Post Office. Follow main street of Cowell to foreshore, turn right at last pub on esplanade and 50m away is entrance to caravan park - easy to find. Signage is good. Ph: 08 8629 2307.
The Park has a tired feel about it. Sites are relatively level but only dirt, no sign of grass which can be expected with the drought in SA. Reception was friendly but at $24 for 2A was a bit steep. Facilities were OK, seemed like plenty of toilets and showers but probably would struggle in peak periods. Good number of rubbish bins and a camp kitchen. Park is at the end of the main street and very accessible. It has great potential but needs some TLC. We stayed because it is close to the Lucky Bay ferry from Eyre Peninsula to Yorke Peninsula. In 2009 the ferry had a half price special for car, caravan and passengers. We have a car and rig about 14m and cost us a little over $200 - good value for the experience.

Yuk. Sandy and old facilities. No grass or pads. Couldn't wait to leave. Average staff friendliness. Price was higher than expected, poor value for money ($26 2A, off-peak season). Inadequate number of amenities, are close to most sites, were dirty, condition is poor, water pressure is bad, there was inadequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, average sized sites, no sites with concrete annex slabs, shade to most sites, drive-through sites. Quiet, open & roomy park, plenty of shade. Suitable for overnighter.
Dislikes: The sites and the ablutions
Local Information: Lovely little town - great for browsing for a day

Manager's name is Jane & Ted Schoff. The park is very busy with a lot of visitors who come and stay for several weeks to fish. This park has just been sold to a property developer and the ex-owners, now caretakers, are not really interested in maintaining the park which is a pity as this could be a lovely park. It will be interesting to see if it will stay as a caravan park or will be turned into units. Friendly staff, no complaints, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, poor value for money ($24 2A per night powered). Inadequate number of amenities, are close to all sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, dry change area, paper towels/dryer provided, exhaust fans/good ventilation. Adequate number of tourist sites, some level sites, small sites. Good laundry, no rec room, good camp kitchen, kiosk. Peaceful, open and roomy, not enough shade, family/friendly atmosphere, no permanents. Clean bbq. Dogs on leash. No playground, no pool. Suitable for month or longer, suitable for families, park is considered kid-safe.
Likes: It is very close to town and overlooks the Franklin Harbour.
Dislikes: Sites were dirt and not kept clean. The electricity and water points were a fair distance away from our site and there was 8 taps off one pipe. No sullage points nearby.
Parking: Outside reception but very small.
Added Touches: Fish cleaning table, access to boat ramp.
Local Information: Fishing at nearby jetty.
Roads: Good.

Report submitted by Fran & Trevor, Melbourne.

Manager's name is Jane & Ted Schoff. Absolute beachfront but alas mainly saltbush and mangroves, so no swimming. No pool, rec room nor playground. It had great boat wash area, undercover BBQ, crab cooking and fish cleaning facilities. Large foreshore playground and BBQ/picnic area within easy walking distance adjacent to caravan park. Jetty also not far, and park is very close to main street so can stroll and visit shops or walk to pubs for tea etc (we did prefer pub halfway up main street for food rather than one on esplanade). All sites are level and majority are grass, lots of large trees at northern end of park for shade. Found this park to be very busy, arrivals/departures all day long and every site was taken on both nights we stayed (a couple of latecomers were turned away). Made it hard to negotiate vans into tight sites and noticed one person give up, leave park and try luck elsewhere as a result. Not really big rig friendly. Because it was busy, and not an overly huge park, felt very claustrophobic and felt fairly restricted to own site. Vehicles parked along thoroughfares, cabins and other vans meant also no view at all (we had site 34 which was right in front of kiosk, and perhaps contributed adversely to our feelings). Did not feel very relaxed, had trouble getting access to BBQ after 6.30pm (as it was popular) and thus became dirty quickly. As we were right in middle of park, meant a bit of a walk to amenities (as they are located at either side of park and one is not as good as other). Amenities (jetty end) were cleaned and maintained well but got dirty quickly because used lots although surprisingly water pressure okay. No real complaints re: facilities, friendliness etc of park, so in fairness have rated accordingly but we felt this park really more suitable for a short stopover than long stay unless you stay in off-peak when park a bit quieter (we were advised park is busy all year around as it is popular and we also did not stay during school holidays) or thrive in a busy park with lots of travellers to talk to. It was also priced a fair bit higher per night than other caravan park and there is a $20 surcharge if you are only staying in a cabin for one night. We would not stop here again as we did not enjoy our stay - we prefer relaxed atmosphere. Don't let this put you off, if this sort of thing doesn't bother you then it is still a good park to stay at - just comes down to choice particularly given good facilities and location of the park and managers very happy to provide advice on local fishing etc. May want to also consider booking a site in advance and minimum bookings apply for holidays (a surcharge may be applicable otherwise). Friendly staff, bad staff response to complaints, staff offered tourist advice, staff helped us at the site, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($32 2A 2C). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to only some sites, cleanliness was average, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, paper towels/dryer provided, disabled facilities. Inadequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, small sites, hard to negotiate into site, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Basic laundry, good camp kitchen, kiosk, disabled facilities. Quiet, claustrophobic park, plenty of shade, no permanents. No pets allowed. Clean UC gas bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. Suitable for overnighter, well maintained park.
Likes: Its location on foreshore and proximity to main street of Cowell, eating out at pubs etc. Fish cleaning, crab cooking and BBQ areas are great. Most sites are grass, if park was not as busy the shade and trees make for fantastic surroundings. Not far to walk to jetty and access boat ramp or picnic/playground area on foreshore. Police station is also located adjacent to caravan park so not too many undesirables around.
Dislikes: Did not like the atmosphere of the park, it was just too busy, too claustrophobic, too many coming and going. Had problems accessing BBQ one night, as it was very popular. Made one complaint about our site and parking which manager was too busy to follow up on. Price was a little higher than other park and may also be an applicable $20 surcharge for one night at certain times of year.
Parking: Drive in entrance, drive past first two sites and turn right at first crossroad and park at marked area. Kiosk/reception is set in behind a couple of sites to the right.
Added Touches: Ted provided a lot of good fishing advice and tourist trip tips. There is a separate fish cleaning area, which also includes pots to cook your crabs! Lots of thought gone into park to enable disabled access. The caravan park has a website with a lot of a great tourist information, caravan park info and photos on it.
Local Information: Lots of local drives to access around Cowell, including inland to farming centres such as Cleve, lookouts, windmill farm and coastal two wheel drive gravel roads (see Cowell visitor centre open weekdays and Saturday mornings - or ask Park managers). Spend some in township, a number of museums (eg: only Australian Jade Mine) and places of interest (Oyster farm shops) plus nice meals at pub half way down main street (Foreshore pub was okay) and bakery. Big playground near foreshore and jetty (areas to park car & caravan) as well as kiosk stocking bait and King George Whiting (latter usually a little overpriced but fresh). Franklin Harbour quite big, a great place to take boat with a few boat ramps in various parts of harbour. Not much area to swim as mostly mangroves. Jetty is a bit of a walk from car but depending on luck/time of year can be a good fishing experience. Nice drives out to Port Gibbon with plenty of camping opportunities on beachfront along the way. Cowell also situated approx 15 km south of Lucky Bay where ferry docks.
Roads: Hilly bitumen highway links Cowell to Port Lincoln or Whyalla or Cleve Most main roads including leading to caravan park are bitumen but also plenty of nearby 2WD gravel roads.

Harbour View Caravan Park, Cowell
Caravan Park is located approx 2 km north of township on a side road coming off Lincoln Highway that goes along north eastern side of Franklin Harbour (before you go across causeway coming from Whyalla) leading to boat ramp. Once on the road and negotiate tight bend, you are passing caravan park premises on left, entrance 300m on left, easy to find. Ph: 08 8629 2216.
Manager's name is Dale & Judy Chopin. Set on slope of hill in mallee surroundings overlooking Franklin Harbour and Cowell township - you are 2km out of township. Nowhere near as well used/busy as the smaller foreshore park but feels much more relaxed and open with a more holiday atmosphere to it. Has a great undercover camp kitchen area (a number of tables and great indoor BBQ - atmosphere congenial to chatting with other travellers/owner/permanents), saltwater pool, nice playground and basic kiosk with bait. No rec room. Park owners very friendly and we had some choice about what site we wanted. Kiosk not usually open but no troubles for Judy to open if you wanted something. No grass sites, all gravel/dirt but many drive through, lots of sloped sites but will generally have no problems getting level site. Amenities were older style but were clean. Boat ramp very close (just 200m up the road) and a great quiet location. At least a dozen permanents but no noise at all for four nights we stayed (cabins are also located just outside park minimising their noise) and as out of township, great starry night sky and excellent harbour views and sunsets over inland. No nearby swimming beach (mainly mangroves) and only real downside is need to drive into town (can't really walk as would have to go across causeway along highway) to access pubs, museums and jetty. However, we prefer staying here to the foreshore park. Cheaper than foreshore park (excluding value for money actually) and also noticed a cabin for just $50 2A2C per night (to hire another time). Good quieter, family friendly, relaxed atmosphere in light Mallee scrub setting. Plenty of shade but can get very warm in summer by nature of surroundings but then really enjoyed using the pool. Very friendly staff, good staff response to complaints, staff offered tourist advice, van parking assistance provided by staff, staff helped us at the site, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was lower than expected, very good value for money ($26 2A 2C per night powered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, paper towels/dryer provided. Adequate number of tourist sites, some level sites, poor night lighting, average sized sites, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by. Good laundry, late checkout allowed (up to noon), good camp kitchen, kiosk. Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere. Dogs on leash. Clean UC gas bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. Good playground in good condition. Clean pool is open to sun, kid-safe pool area, tables and chairs provided. Suitable for a week or more, well maintained park, park is considered kid-safe.
Likes: Generally peaceful and quiet atmosphere, mallee setting, harbour and sunset views, pool and playground. Everyone was friendly including owners happy to come over and chat at BBQ and share stories - not too busy a park.
Dislikes: Only its location being out of the township and having to drive into town to access jetty, night out at pub etc (although some might say this is a positive). No nearby swimming beach or areas to go for walks.
Parking: Take left "fork" as you enter caravan park, pull up outside kiosk, if not open follow the sign and walk to manager's house, just on other side of internal road adjacent kiosk.
Added Touches: Friendliness of managers (came over to chat to us a few times), nothing too much trouble for them. Enjoyed a great little playground, pool very well maintained and the camp kitchen was excellent. Can walk across road to mangroves in low tide and do some raking for mud crabs.
Big playground near foreshore and jetty (areas to park car & caravan) as well as kiosk stocking bait and KG Whiting (latter usually a little overpriced but fresh).

Very friendly staff, good staff response to complaints, staff offered tourist advice, van parking assistance provided by staff, staff helped us at the site, staff explained park layout and facilities. Likes: Good open atmosphere, very friendly owners, very close to jetty, family friendly, plenty of good shady spots, just a nice big open and roomy, generally grassy park.

Added Touches: Allowed my kids to use some of their own toys, provided lots of helpful information about fishing, good fish cleaning table, very clean amenities, clearly proud of their park.
Local Information: Close to jetty, there is a walking trail/footpath opposite entrance that goes into town centre for those who like walking, or can follow beach. Manager's name is Michael Slape. A small but very shady and grassy park suitable for those who prefer peace and quiet. There are 40 powered and 10 unpowered sites, about half powered can be drive through, although back on to each other. Very close walking to pub and town centre. Very well sheltered spot as it is behind a sand hill that you can easily walk over to beach (Waterloo Bay), nearby grass area to view gorgeous sunsets through entrance to bay and small lookout. Also walk across road into wetland area, some bird noises at night. Not a lot of room for boats etc, and requires a drive to access jetty (bit far to walk). We've stayed in both Elliston parks, this is the smaller and much quieter of the two and is preferable for this reason, plus very easy walk to pub and town centre. Other Elliston park is better for families (although we played cricket with another family) and close to jetty. Small park with small facilities. There is a minimum booking period for long weekends, Christmas and Easter so check in advance. Enjoyed this park for nice relaxing quiet atmosphere but not much to do in park itself. Just one amenities block centrally located, very clean. Stayed a few nights, quite comfortable. In peak times the park gets full and a bit crowded. Very friendly staff, who helped us as we arrived drenched from being hit by a freak wave at Lochs Well and they assisted us settle in and get clothes washed etc. Mike came over and had a chat with us later too. Staff offered tourist advice, van parking assistance provided by staff, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($28.00 2A 2C per night). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, paper towels/dryer provided. Inadequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by. Good laundry, basic rec room, dump point. Peaceful, claustrophobic park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere, no permanents. Clean UC gas bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting. No playground, no pool. Suitable for few days, well maintained park.
Likes: Quiet, shady, sheltered atmosphere. Very close to town centre, can easily walk to pub, bakery, playground, wetlands, esplanade, etc
Dislikes: Because it is quiet and shady, not really much to do in park and thus not the pick of the places for families. Not a huge amount of room in park to negotiate big rigs. The park is not close to the jetty. Felt a little claustrophobic when lots of people there.
Added Touches: As mentioned, Mike helped us at beginning to settle in and get washed up and dried given our experience at Lochs Well.
Local Information: Pub meals - very family friendly including pool tables, outside grass area where kids played, staff were nice and nice reasonable pub meals - definitely a must given you are so close to it. Lots of nearby areas to drive, including two cliff top drives (one Elliston side of bay, other opposite side) that are a must! IGA and Bakery in town. Playground, wetlands area and grassed area at esplanade. Tourist info centre in town a must to find out local attractions and get maps, has internet cafe. Long jetty at centre of Waterloo Bay near other caravan park.
Roads: Bitumen roads throughout town - Port Lincoln to Ceduna highway passes edge of town. Roads throughout region are hilly and it can be difficult to pass.

Manager's name is Geoff & Lexie Bray. If you are fisher folk you will love this park and surrounding area. The 17 km of gravel road to the park was in good condition. Electricity is limited and no element appliances, air conditioners, etc. can be used. There are some lovely 4WD drives, especially to Scotts Bay, Mexican Hat and Wandilla Beach. The park itself was well maintained just some of the facilities were lacking. Very friendly staff, no complaints, staff offered tourist advice. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($26 2A per night powered). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to all sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is bad, there was adequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, large sites, concrete annex slabs, drive-through sites, poor water quality, adequate taps close by. Basic laundry, no rec room, kiosk. Peaceful, open and roomy, not enough shade There were two types of bbq, wood and gas, the wood one was dirty, the gas was not much better and incurred a $2 fee. The bbq area was average. Although there was no playground within the park itself, there was one right next door which appeared to be in good condition. No pool. Suitable for a week or more, suitable for families.
Parking: You had to go to the shop in the main street to pay then back to the van park to select your site, presumably during the busy season one would be issued with a site.
Added Touches: Fish cleaning table.
Roads: Very good dirt road into Fowlers Bay.

This park has a couple of concrete slabs but mostly just dirt. The only part of the park with grass is the tent compound. There are only two toilets and two showers only for the use of the park, these are unisex. The laundry has one washing machine and there is limited clothesline space. We paid at the shop and were told to go around and find a spot anywhere in the park. There is no water to the sites but drinking water is available. Power is limited and you are advised that using element appliances may trip the fuses. Air conditioning is not allowed at all. Very friendly staff. Price was higher than expected, poor value for money ($23 2A per night powered). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to all sites, were clean, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, dry change area. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, average sized sites, poor water quality. Basic laundry, no rec room. Quiet, open & roomy park, not enough shade. Gas bbq ($2). No pool. Parking: Park outside the general store to book in.
Added Touches: Fish cleaning facilities available.
Roads: Dirt roads from highway to the bay. Quite rough in places.

Mt Ive Station, Gawler Ranges
Mt Ive Station is a working sheep property, 128km of dirt road north west of Iron Knob on Eyre Peninsula. Ph: 08 8648 1817.
Manager's name is Neville. This is a caravan park with a difference. The road conditions can vary widely, depending on whether it has rained, and whether the grader has been through. The road from Iron Knob is the main mail route, but that does not mean it gets any extra treatment. We rang ahead for a road report, as our caravan is not an off-roader. We were told the road was 'pretty good', and about 95% of it was, but the remaining 5% can make the difference. There were a number of poor stretches of a few hundred metres, but some creek crossings and most of the grid crossings need care, particularly the first few at the Iron Knob end. We also found a lot of dust in the caravan once we arrived, so pay a bit more attention to sealing etc. Mt Ive use UHF 7 (repeater channel) so you could try calling when you get close or in trouble, but don't expect them to monitor the channel. This is a remote area - we only saw 2 road crews in 128km, no other vehicles. Note also that there is no NextG coverage soon after leaving Iron Knob. Once you get to Mt Ive, they give the run-down on the station and show the facilities. The amenities are those used by the shearers, and are basic but quite reasonable. Water is a shandy of bore and rainwater, and rainwater is available for the kettle. The hot water service is a 'donkey', a large steel tank that sits over a fire. Power is available 24hrs, but the generator may run for a while at night (up to 8pm) to top up the batteries if the solar setup has not coped. The station have set up a number of 4WD tracks to places of special interest, like peculiar rock formations (rhyolite pillars), massive wombat holes, various lookouts and access to the surface of Lake Gairdner. Some of these tracks need sturdy tyres, genuine 4WD and low range for safety - it is suggested that one 32km loop will take 3 to 4 hours, and you can believe it! They provide 'mud maps' of the tracks, with colour coded markers and good descriptions (distance from start and turn info) to guide tourists. There are plenty of roos, goats, sheep and emus about, along with the interesting geology - this area is in the Gawler Ranges, and is said to contain some of the oldest rock formations in the world. They have a basic shop and licensed liquor outlet, but both are open limited hours. There are no fresh provisions of bread, milk or meat etc due to remoteness. Fuel is available, and at roughly 10-15c/L above Pt Augusta prices was not as bad as expected, given the remoteness. Cost for a powered site is $20 per night 2A, plus there is a one-off fee of $20 (regardless of length of stay) to help cover their costs of road and gate maintenance, power etc. This place is probably one that you would only visit once, unless you are into hard-core 4WDing or have some other special interest, but if you are happy to take on the road conditions then some of the scenery and rock formations can make it worthwhile. I'd suggest you allow at least 2 nights there so you can make the trip worthwhile. They do have accommodation in the shearer's quarters if you want to leave the caravan behind. I would recommend giving them a call beforehand to check on the road and accommodation situation (they may be busy shearing) and remember that their opinion of the road may not coincide with yours. They are a friendly bunch, but remember they have a 900 sq km sheep property to run. We went in mid-May and the weather was fairly good - nice days and cool to cold nights. I believe it would be a hot and dusty place in summer, and would get messy if it ever rained. Check regards using their tracks in high summer due to fire risk. Take a good book to read at night (unless you want to go star-gazing) because there is no TV reception unless you have satellite, and take a torch if you need nocturnal visits to the loos as it is really dark at night.

Easy to find, just west of the town centre. Owners are Trevor and Lynette Kassebaum. We didn’t meet Lynette but found Trevor very friendly and helpful. The park is very basic. All sites and roadways are gravel. There are water taps and power but no drains, so all sullage just soaks into the ground unless you coax it around the roots of some of the native trees that are near the sites. There is a barbecue and the amenities are small but modern with a good strong flow of water in the showers. Only one washing machine and, during our stay the dryer was out of order. (The air was so dry that our washing dried in no time.) In summary: a basic park at a basic price ($19 2A with Top Tourist discount). A good stopover on your way from Port Augusta to Streaky Bay or Ceduna or reverse.

A fairly primitive park, with gravel sites arranged in a circle and a couple inside it. All are drive through, have limited shade, only a few taps scattered around, no sullage, no annexe pads. Amenities are small and a little old but refurbished and clean and well maintained. Good hot water pressure in showers, no mop supplied. Although on main highway traffic noise at night did not disturb us. Rusted remnants of a children's playground, a BBQ but no other facilities. Adequate for overnight stop but surprising that it has Top Tourist membership as standard is definitely low. Price of $23 2A for powered site average value.

Point Lowly Camping Ground, Point Lowly
Manager's name is Whyalla Council. Ph: 8640 3444. Unpowered caravan/camping ground run by Whyalla Council - unsure if you are required to pay - no signs or other indications. Flat area, asphalt/gravel, fenced off specifically for campers to enjoy with nice views of upper Spencer Gulf and southern Flinders to the east, but also behind you to the west is Port Bonython SANTOS refinery only 500m away! Area has one major street light at night, although lights around toilets and nearby boat ramp, and one sheltered picnic bench, a couple of other benches not sheltered. There were 10 caravans when we were there which is about the limit of the area, more arrived and overflowed into a nearby parking area for boats. So a popular little spot, although was school holidays. Amenities block and basic playground adjacent to area. To south-west, a dump point is located 200m away (marked by signage), as is a great swimming beach (in spite of the view of a long shipping pier), south-east is of course the famous lighthouse a short walking distance and 50m to the east is a popular boat ramp. I have given a low rating because of facilities, but if you don't mind roughing it a bit - it's an extremely relaxing area to stay a few days to enjoy the peace. The lighthouse works and an eerie spot to walk to at night. Town lights from other side of gulf (east) particularly of Port Pirie, as well as those on opposite side of bay to Whyalla make it a worthwhile spot, even though lots of bright lights from nearby refinery. However, don't come out here expecting to stock up on anything, there are no shops, kiosks etc - you need to go to Whyalla (30 kms away) for food. A good spot to stay a few days camp style or with a generator - presumably dogs are okay although have to keep under control. There are plenty of other camping areas along coastal drive to Fitzgerald Bay and beyond if you prefer a little more isolation. Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to all sites, cleanliness was average, condition is reasonable. No bbqs. Basic playground in average condition. No pool. Suitable for few days.
Likes: Relaxing place, nice views - very pretty. Great spot for fishing (or at least trying) off nearby rocks and in high tide, Dolphins frequent the area, less than a stone's throw away from the shore. Lovely swimming beach (when tide is in) adjacent to refinery area where shacks face Whyalla.
Dislikes: The heat is a little oppressive at times with no real relief and without power hard to stay too long without a generator. Talking to a couple of others staying there they indicated beach area got very noisy one night but hard to say if they were louts or shack owners. There's nothing nearby to purchase anything, you have to go to Whyalla.
Local Information: Whyalla is 30 km away by road but just across the bay by water. SANTOS has refinery at Port Bonython which is adjacent to Point Lowly. Coastal 10 km gravel drive from False Bay to Port Boython with views of Whyalla is worth it, opportunities to stop at beaches, rocks and view where divers come from all over the world to swim with cuttlefish. In warmer months there is a fantastic swimming beach (in spite of the ugly view of the SANTOS jetty and large container ship) on Whyalla side near the shacks (a 200m walk from camping ground). Point Lowly lighthouse is dominant feature and worth the walk to have a look (the popular lighthouse cottage accommodation can be rented out). There is a coastal 2WD (but rough) scenic drive to Fitzgerald Bay which gives great views across Spencer Gulf. Hard to find entrance at Lowly end so best to follow bitumen road to Fitzgerald Bay (a great lookout over the bay on side of the road - look for camera sign) - turn left follow road to Douglas Point past all the shacks where it ends. Then double back and keep going along coast to Point Lowly via the rough but scenic drive. With right fishing gear, usually good opportunities for Kingfish and Snapper off rocks. Boat ramp also located 50m away.
Roads: Lincoln Highway between Pt Augusta and Whyalla is bitumen with a number of long straight stretches for overtaking. Road from Highway to Point Lowly is bitumen and well marked with some opportunities to overtake. Another turn off to Fitzgerald Bay two-thirds of the way to Point Lowly is bitumen but road very narrow and no lines. All other roads in region are 2WD gravel.

Good clean park that is well maintained. Great views with good access to the foreshore and a fishing jetty. Terraced sites create some problems if you want to put up an annexe. Friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, good value for money ($23.40 2A per night, shoulder season). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly unlevel sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, no sites with concrete annex slabs, shade to some sites, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Clean UC bbq, congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. No pool. Suitable for few days, well maintained park.
Likes: Very clean and well maintained. Good grass on sites and a lovely view.
Dislikes: The terraced sites are nice and long, but too narrow. OK for the van but once you try and put the awning/annexe up you find you are dropping down onto the next site.

Manager's name is Peter & Maria Appleton. This park is difficult to rate. There are some areas very good and some not. It is in two parts - the nearest to the office has 60 nice sites - flat with sullage, tar roads, taps and well grassed. The amenities block is very good. The 2nd amenities block is only about 50 metres from the first. Both are strangely adjacent in the middle of the park which means a long walk for many. The 2nd amenities block is poorly fitted out. Small showers. The men's side has no hand dryers and in the 5 days we were there, empty soap dispensers. These were provided in the women's section. Whilst the park demanded guests use water wisely none of the shower heads were of the 'water wise' variety. Apart from flood lighting around the amenities blocks, there was no park lighting. As the park roads are laid out in a sort of interlocking V's this made walking at night hazardous. The 3rd amenities block is within a separate cabin section. Just past the amenities block the park has its second section of about 120 powered sites, permanents and unpowered sites. Here many of the sites are narrow, no sullage, and not level. Some are ok. Some vans need chocks on one side to level the vans, whilst some sloped so badly that van jacks needed extra wood blocks to reach the ground. That so many good sites remained vacant indicates that reception staff had little knowledge of which of their sites should be 'left till last'. Although I am always in a hurry to get in and set up, I will now always have a look at a park before I book in or demand a better site if necessary in future. Security numbered boom gates on entry and departure. Very few items (e.g. no bread, no milk) stocked at kiosk. The few newspapers sold out quickly around 8AM. Very friendly staff, good staff response to complaints, staff offered tourist advice. Price was as expected, poor value for money ($26 2A per night, powered, off-peak season). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to only some sites, were clean, condition is good. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly unlevel sites, poor night lighting, small sites, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by. Good laundry, good camp kitchen, dump point, secure entry. Quiet, not enough shade, family/friendly atmosphere. Clean UC gas bbq (free), bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. Basic playground in average condition. Suitable for a week or more.
Likes: Great views of the bay. Nice walkway along the beach in both directions. All sites 1 van deep. Two jetties. Roomy, very clean, covered 4BBQs area. Boat ramp.

Friendly staff, good staff response to complaints, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, very good value for money ($23.40 2A per night, powered, shoulder season). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is reasonable, water pressure is bad, there was adequate hot water, separate bathroom, paper towels/dryer provided, exhaust fans/good ventilation, disabled facilities. Adequate number of tourist sites, some unlevel sites, good night lighting, small sites, no sites with concrete annex slabs, no sites are shaded, drive-through sites, hard to negotiate into site, poor water quality, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Good laundry, no rec room, good camp kitchen, disabled facilities, dump point, secure entry. Quiet, claustrophobic park, not enough shade, family/friendly atmosphere. No pets allowed, but noticed caged birds on one site. Clean UC gas bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. No pool. Suitable for a week or more, well maintained park.
Likes: Grassy sites, large undercover BBQ, park jetty and boat ramp.
Dislikes: Poor size of sites that are cut into hill, they need to spend some time and improve these as they are not level and don't provide adequate room for annexes. Although park is maintained, dripping showers and variance in pressure between cubicles was a problem.
Parking: Small area as you enter for parking, only big enough really for one large van.
Added Touches: One of the best views for a park location over Boston Harbour.
Local Information: Plan to stay here for a week at the minimum, there is a lot to see and do. Make sure you take a trip out to the tuna farms, well worth the money $50-00 pensioner rate from Triple Bay Charters. Tourism office is extremely helpful.

Lovely Town. Great National Parks. Great Shopping and Pub Meals. Really enjoyed it. Very sloping van sites in park - but good park and facilities. Friendly staff. Price was as expected ($23.40 2A per night, powered, shoulder season). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to all sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, hot water was usually adequate but not when busy. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly unlevel sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Quiet, open & roomy park, well maintained park.

An average park that is well sited overlooking the water. There are a number of sections in the park. We found the sites in our section large, even and easily accessed. Reception staff was friendly and helpful. Amenities were adequate and clean. Our only gripe is that TV reception is almost non-existent and telephone reception fluky. In a modern world, and in a major city (where you are told constantly about the number of millionaires that live there) facilities such as these have become a normal expectation. Good management, friendly management, management responsive to comments, management was helpful. Reasonable value for money.
Date 04/2008. Park Rating 3.5: We would stay again and it is suitable for any length of time.

Manager's name is Peter And Maria Appleton This is a large park with a separate cabin area and a few permanent / private sites. There are around 170 caravan sites, but many are very narrow due to the terracing of the park on the side of a hill. On many sites an annexe would be on sloping ground, and caravans may require some levelling once on site. The BBQ area is lit, but only poorly. Best TV reception is UHF, vertical orientation, bearing 1.4deg magnetic (signal from Tumby Bay), rather than the local tower. Friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($24 2A per night powered). There are two amenities blocks in the caravan site area. The central block is reasonably old and the shower change areas are very cramped. The newer block is far better and may be worth the longer walk. Amenities are close to most sites, cleanliness was average, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, separate bathroom, soap provided, disabled facilities. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly unlevel sites, poor night lighting, small sites, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Night lighting is very poor, other than around the amenities blocks. This could be dangerous as some of the rotary clothes lines are below head level, so walk with care at night. Good laundry, good camp kitchen, disabled facilities, dump point, secure entry. Quiet, open and roomy, family/friendly atmosphere. Clean UC gas bbq (free), bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. Basic playground in average condition. No pool. Suitable for month or longer, suitable for families, well maintained park, park is considered kid-safe.

Manager's name is Peter & Maria Appleton. This is a large park (177 sites) overlooking Boston Bay, but spoilt by having a large number of small uneven sites which to us does not rate the 4 stars given by the AAA. However the position and view is magnificent and we would stay again. Very friendly staff, no complaints, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($26 2A per night powered). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to only some sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, dry change area, paper towels/dryer provided, exhaust fans/good ventilation. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly unlevel sites, good night lighting, small sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Good laundry, no rec room, good camp kitchen, dump point, secure entry. Peaceful, open and roomy, not enough shade, family/friendly atmosphere, no permanents. Clean UC gas bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. Good playground in good condition. No pool. Suitable for a week or more, suitable for families, park is considered kid-safe.
Likes: The view from most sites overlooking Boston Bay are spectacular.
Dislikes: Even using chocks it was impossible to get the van level. Most sites are so small it is either difficult or impossible to put out the awning. We picked up three hand fulls of rubbish off the site before we were able to set up. Work around the park does not appear to be on the top of the agenda.
Parking: Outside reception.
Added Touches: Boat ramp.
Local Information: Port Lincoln National Park and various boat cruises available.
Roads: Good.

These comments are on the self contained cabins. We booked a week ahead and asked for a cabin close to the sea as we were told the cabins were all on a very steep hill. Although four at the front were empty we were given the very top one, which was by the gates, with bright lights and so steep we could barely get out of the car. No outside furniture, torn wire screens, dirty curtains, broken tiles in the shower area, hardly anything to cook with, oven but no tray, griller but no grill dish. Had to buy and borrow gear from a relative. Generally dusty; sink still had food in plughole. What Port Lincoln needs is another tourist park. Too much is owned by the Sarin Group and they couldn't care less. My cut foot from the tiles was met with a half price food voucher for one of Sarin's Hotel - comment was "we are too busy for maintenance". Not impressed at all. Average staff friendliness, bad staff response to complaints. Price was as expected, poor value for money ($70 2A per night). Cleanliness was average.
Dislikes: With all the rules and regulations, no one seemed to monitor speed limit. Would hate it in peak period if I had children.

Very little grass on the mostly small but terraced sites. Permanent vans had the desirable waterfront positions, but the terraces still gave most vans a water view. Port Neill Caravan Park, Port Neill
Drive into township and head toward foreshore/jetty - follow signs to caravan park entrance, which is about 500m SE of jetty. Ph: 08 8688 9067. All pets allowed, dogs not on leads.
Unfriendly staff, bad staff response to complaints. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($37 2A C3 per night, peak season). Inadequate number of amenities, are close to most sites, were dirty, condition is poor, water pressure is bad, there was adequate hot water, paper towels/dryer provided. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, average sized sites, no sites with concrete annex slabs, shade to some sites. Poor laundry, no rec room, kiosk. Quiet, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere, too many permanents. Dirty UC gas bbq (free), bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. No playground, no pool. Suitable for overnighter, suitable for families.
Likes: I liked that the park is very close to the beach and jetty area.
Dislikes: Dirty bathroom facilities, stinking bins that weren't emptied in at least 4 days, 1 amenities block had to be closed down due to blocked drains, stinking septics with very dangerous broken lids that looked like they had been like this for some time, had to ask for toilet paper, very lazy and obnoxious manager, everyone was complaining and it is such a shame for the town as I feel no one will return. The whole park needs a major makeover, it appears no maintenance is being done at all, taps are all leaking, just broken everything. Kiosk very poor.
Local Information: Port Neill is absolutely beautiful, lovely sheltered beach, great jetty and foreshore area all lawned with great kids playground with lots of shade. Caught lots of squid off of the jetty, boat ramp is excellent only requiring a gold coin donation. A very peaceful lovely town, would love to come back but only if the caravan park has major improvement.

Changed ownership recently. It is a very popular caravan park used in summer holidays, as it contains 25+ semi and permanent residents (onsite vans with annexes as holiday shacks) plus a couple of houses and lots of Eyre Peninsula residents holiday there although when we stayed for some reason park was much quieter than usual. The caravan park is very close to the beach but not absolute beachfront, there is an esplanade and a row of beachfront shacks between the caravan park and sand - but still an easy stroll between shacks to the beach. The caravan park is situated on the side of a hill although most sites quite level. There is a mixture of gravel and grass sites throughout the park. Our site #74 was up the back, higher on hill near the cabins with a reasonable view of the bay. At least three brick amenities that were all clean and okay, but lower standard than usual. The kiosk doubles up as reception and stocks most general items including bait and managers assisted with tourist advice. There are a couple of camp kitchens and a games room (with fee required arcade games) and our young kids were told off just for being in there without an adult. There are a couple of BBQ areas, including one under gazebo. A small kitchen very close to our site was useful as it had a TV and air con in the 40+C temps. This caravan park was on the market and being sold when we stayed, probably a good thing as felt management was okay but certainly lower down the list to what we are used to - hopefully might have improved now. There is neither playground nor pool, but a nice playground by the jetty and of course the beach make up for their absence. There is plenty of shade, it is a roomy park, some drive through sites but majority not. Atmosphere was peaceful but suspect would be very different in peak season given holiday comments above. Average staff friendliness, average staff response to complaints, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, good value for money ($30 2A 2C per night powered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to all sites, were clean, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, paper towels/dryer provided, exhaust fans/good ventilation. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by. Good laundry, good rec room, good camp kitchen, kiosk. Quiet, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere, too many permanents. Clean UC gas bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. Suitable for a week or more, park is considered kid-safe.
Likes: Generally peaceful atmosphere and walking distance to beach and town centre. When we stayed it was very peaceful but have heard it can get quite busy.
Dislikes: Number of semi-permanent residents/on site van/shack owners although we had no problems when we stayed. At the time, management attitude, but note park was on the market and might have impacted on service. It has changed ownership now.
Parking: There is a stop sign as you enter the park which is on a decline, but only really fits one caravan awaiting to book.
Added Touches: Arcade Games room was good, but games cost $1-$2. Ability to buy most things from kiosk for your day trip.
Local Information: Nice town, can use as a base to explore some local tourist drives. Great playground adjacent jetty - good jetty for fishing (although we had no luck), also good swimming beach northern side of jetty (but there are jelly fish concerns from time to time to be aware of). There is a heritage walk around town and a great lawn bowls club itself absolute beachfront. There are coastal drives to follow, ask for maps at kiosk, and just 1km north of the town is a lookout which is worth going up to get a great view of the bay. There is also large barbecue area southern side of jetty, and huge lawn area for picnics opposite pub adjacent jetty. Lipson Cove - accessed by coastal 2WD gravel roads south of town is a great big beach and icy cold swimming for those 40C days - although gets deep quickly. Has a small island there with birdlife.
Roads: Hilly bitumen highway links Port Lincoln to Cowell and Port Neill is accessed via a 4km bitumen road coming off the main highway. All other roads around the township are gravel roads suitable for 2WD.

$22.50 per night with Family Parks discount. Well signposted from highway. The park has direct beach frontage with views across the bay. Two toilet blocks, both very clean with roomy cubicles. The park has a small café serving inexpensive and pleasant meals. Some sites have double concrete slabs. Trees provide shade to most sites. The park is walking distance to town along the foreshore. Manager's name is Peter & Ruth Deane/Chris & Debbie Jarred. This park is right on the foreshore and well worth a visit. It is a tourist park and no permanents. The Managers are helpful and the park well maintained. The sites are level and roads sealed. A good dump point is available. The showers have plenty of water and there are plenty of toilets. Streaky Bay is a nice town with most facilities available. At $24 a night it represented good value. Tinnies can be launched from the beach and other larger boats at the boat ramp. Likes: This park was relaxing but dusty.
Dislikes: The boom gates must be keyed both entering and leaving, the key box is very akward to access as there is a built up garden bed with key box in middle (cannot open door) as this is a council park you are given a full page of rules - one rule was if you intend to leave after 10.00am your key will not work and you will be charged a extra day to open the boom gate and leave.

A top location. Reception is efficient and staff friendly are helpful. Very busy park all the time. A lot of long-term tenants who come for 2-3 months for the fishing and we felt that they resented any short termers coming and intruding on their domain. Most unfriendly atmosphere. Sites are a mix of gravel and sand, consequently difficult to keep oneself and van clean. Amenities cleaned regularly but sometimes in a cursory manner and had difficulty coping during our stay. Don't even think about staying without phoning ahead and in holiday periods book well in advance.

Manager's name is Kylie. Absolute beachfront with great swimming beach at high tide. Have stayed here a few times now and is favourite holiday spot, and caravan park has everything that is needed - camp kitchens, cabins, playgrounds, undercover BBQ areas, takeaway foods etc. Now a very busy park, especially school holidays, and more or less split into western and eastern sections and have own amenities, camp kitchens etc. Western side facilities better but eastern side has sites absolute foreshore frontage, so can sit back at site enjoying a drink while kids play on sand/in water. Lots of sites, some drive through, but most are level with concrete slabs or are dirt/gravel. Can walk to town centre along walking path or along trail on western side of bay. Park caters for tourists both short and long stays so have all facilities required, including fish cleaning, boat wash, car wash, dump point etc. On western side has great BBQ undercover areas, camp kitchen (including an adjacent dining room), games room (although cost to hire and use equipment) very clean amenities, except very dirty by end of day through use by lots of beachgoers and often had to queue for shower. Stayed 7 nights (7th night free), could have stayed longer, really enjoy the view from the park as well. Ability to hire canoes ($15 per hour) and kiosk has takeaway meals, fishing gear and some groceries. Has a fantastic view of whole of bay, walk down to waters edge at dusk and contemplate township lights after dark. Only complaint was complete lack of empathy and assistance in dealing with "mess" from sea bird in trees above that ruined canvas and noted managers not keen to refund monies lost in gaming machines. Park has own website with layout and is well-maintained, kid safe, well run and a great place to holiday. Dog friendly (under control) and in winter months can use cages for beach bonfires. Can get noisy in peak times and a bit overcrowded due to being popular in October and summer school holidays. Meals at Streaky Bay hotel family friendly is a must! Friendly staff, bad staff response to complaints, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was lower than expected, good value for money ($32 2A 2C per night powered). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to most sites, cleanliness was average, condition is very good, water pressure is good, hot water was usually adequate but not when busy, soap provided, paper towels/dryer provided, disabled facilities. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, concrete annex slabs, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by. Good laundry, good rec room, good camp kitchen, kiosk, disabled facilities, car wash, dump point, secure entry. Clean UC gas bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting. Good playground in average condition. No pool. Suitable for a week or more, suitable for families, well maintained park, park is considered kid-safe.
Likes: Its location on foreshore, great family spot, ideal swimming at high tide and the views - basically just about everything staying at the park and enjoying the town - great holiday destination. Very relaxing park in nice warm beach weather could have easily stayed another week. Great base for boaties too.
Dislikes: Gets a bit noisy and overcrowded in peak periods and thus a bit too popular. Very disappointed with response to complaint noted above - shame considering we have stayed before without any issues. Need to book ahead site you want as some sites have no views in busy periods.
Parking: After entering premises park in recess on left-hand side just before boom gate. Walk across roadway to office - look for sign as it is on a door you may not expect to be office (closest door part of manager quarters).
Added Touches: Our 7th night stay was free - how many other parks offer this? Hire canoes for $15 an hour, fish cleaning facilities, takeaway food from kiosk, plenty of good help and info from managers. Believe you can also hire bicycles. Also believe you can organise liquor and meat to be delivered to caravan park (check with managers).
Local Information: Need to have at least one meal at Streaky Bay Hotel - family friendly. Dolphins often spotted in bay near jetty. Jetty good fishing. Plenty of walks, walk around township worthwhile. Drive the coastal roads and particularly take time to go out to Back Beach at sunset! Main Boat ramp is near towers on western side of bay. Township has two IGA's and couple of café's. Visitor centre good spot to get advice and information. Can explore lots of other parts of region including Seal Colony (Pt Labatt), Murphy's haystacks, Smoky Bay etc. If you stay in school holidays check with managers about school across road as it has free library/internet facilities and fee based public swimming pool.
Roads: All main roads to and in township to caravan park entrance are bitumen. Be aware of nasty spoon drain approaching caravan park from town. Most other local tourist drives are 2WD gravel. Bitumen road to boat ramp near towers on western side of bay.

Likes: Clean, well maintained, nice and shady, right on the foreshore. Comfortable walk into town centre.
Dislikes: Park atmosphere was a bit "flat" and lacked some of the jovial mood found in many tourist parks. Need better rubbish arrangement, the trailer gets to overflowing on a regular basis.
Added Touches: Fish cleaning tables/facilities. Local tour operator (horse & trolley) leaves from the park on most days.
Local Information: Lovely small coastal town with some good drives into the rural area (Koppio, etc). Two local hotels provide meals, the local bakery is a beauty and two supermarkets provide good services to the town.

Parking: Outside reception.
Added Touches: Fish cleaning table, boat ramp.
Local Information: Lovely town tour with Ross Story and his beautiful Clydesdale 'Polly' and trolley ride, departs daily from the caravan park, excellent value for money. 30 minutes due west from Tumby Bay is a most delightful museum at Koppio, this has got to be one of the most extensive, well laid out country museums we have even seen. Some of their collection is priceless. The range of articles on display is staggering, ranging from a WWI tank, beautifully restored horse drawn carriages to burnt items retrieved after the 2005 bush fires. A visit to this museum is a must.

Venus Bay Caravan Park, Venus Bay
6 kms from the main highway near Port Kenny, between Elliston and Streaky Bay. Ph: 08 8625 5073. Pets at manager's discretion.
Friendly reception and well maintained shop. Park was reasonably busy when we were there in June (winter in SA). Limited number of toilets available and regularly all full in the morning. Many people chose to shower in the afternoons. Park is flat and sandy/shell grit. Obviously a good fishing bay with many tinnies and lots of people staying for long periods. Water to vans is bore water and not suitable for drinking. Lovely location, close to the water and jetty. Park is rated lower because of poor facilities although the showers were good. The facilities were relatively clean but needed some maintenance. A very basic dump point provided - but not suitable if your toilet waste has any solids at all. We would stay next time if we were serious about getting some King George Whiting. There are small boats available for hire and reasonably priced. Not a place to stay for just tourist activity - obviously a little fishing community town. Road conditions in are excellent. Nice walks available around to the headland.

Manager's name is Bill & Raelene Southern. A small park right on the bay. As in most of the Eyre Peninsula there is no grass to be seen, just crushed shells. At reception there is a take-away café, post office and well equipped kiosk. Very friendly staff, no complaints, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($20 2A per night powered). There are two amenity blocks, one old and one new, the new one has soap and towels but the old one has nothing. The water pressure in both hot and cold is poor. The tap water is not fit for human consumption but rain water is provided for drinking. Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is reasonable, water pressure is bad, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, dry change area, paper towels/dryer provided, exhaust fans/good ventilation, disabled facilities. Adequate number of tourist sites, all level sites, poor night lighting, average sized sites, drive-through sites, hard to negotiate into site, poor water quality, adequate taps close by. Basic laundry, kiosk, disabled facilities, dump point, basic camp kitchen. Peaceful, open and roomy, not enough shade, family/friendly atmosphere, no permanents. Clean UC gas bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. No playground, no pool. Suitable for month or longer, suitable for families, well maintained park, park is considered kid-safe.
Parking: At reception.
Added Touches: Fish cleaning tables.
Local Information: The local jetty seems to be the local meeting place. You can swim with sea lions on an organised tour from Baird Bay or drive yourself to Point Labatt to the seal colony. The Talia Caves tourist drive is well worth doing.
Roads: Dirt roads are excellent.

Park is on the water and frequented by fishermen. Has fish cleaning facilities and the shop sells bait and fishing gear. In the motoring association books this park is listed as having town water. It actually has a notice on the amenities wall saying that the water is not fit for human consumption. The water is bore and is slightly salty. There is a rainwater tank for drinking water. The sites we were given were quite small and all the sites near us were the same. Our van with the awning extended just cleared the next van and vehicles had to be parked across the front on the roadway. The entire park is dirt and there are no concrete slabs. Friendly staff, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was higher than expected, poor value for money ($21 2A per night). Amenities are close to most sites, were clean, condition is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, paper towels/dryer provided. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, small sites, poor water quality. Basic laundry, basic rec room, kiosk. Peaceful, not enough shade, family/friendly atmosphere. No playground, no pool. Suitable for few days.
Parking: There is parking out side the office/kiosk when booking in.

Whyalla Caravan park, Whyalla
Turn east off main highway at southern entrance to town and follow signs. Ph: 08 8645 9357 or 1800 828 012. Top Tourist member. Dogs allowed.
A very ordinary park located well out of town in the middle of nowhere. Manager was leaving the day after our stay and, understandably, was not particularly interested. Facilities were basic and in need of makeover. Met the purpose of an overnight stay but even allowing for a change of management, would not stay again. Poor value for money.

Whyalla Foreshore Caravan Park, Whyalla
Broadbent Terrace which is continuation of Lincoln Highway at junction with Port Augusta highway [Playford Avenue]. 1 km south-west of post office. Ph: 08 8645 7474 or 1800 352 966. Discovery Parks member and Top Tourist member. Dogs on leash, at manager's discretion.
Manager's name is Ginger. A large park with absolute beach frontage. The new managers (arrived late 2008) are making good changes to this park. People travelling with dogs now have the choice of sites within the park and no longer sent to the "dog area". The park now has some lovely garden beds throughout the park and the manager was establishing new areas while we were there. The amenities blocks, laundries and the camp kitchen were very clean. Very friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($24.30 2A per night, powered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, dry change area, paper towels/dryer provided, exhaust fans/good ventilation. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, concrete annex slabs to some sites, shade to some sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Clean UC gas bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. Good playground in good condition. No pool. Suitable for a week or more, suitable for families, well maintained park.
Likes: Bathmats provided daily in the amenities blocks. Book exchange in the office. Close to beach for walking the dog.
Parking: Park on the road into the caravan park.
Added Touches: Free sausage sizzle on Thursday lunch time. Jumping pillow in the playground area. Sale of some local produce in the office.
Roads: Good roads.

Friendly staff, average staff response to complaints, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($24.30 2A per night, powered, shoulder season). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, cleanliness was average, condition is reasonable, water pressure is bad, there was adequate hot water, paper towels/dryer provided. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, concrete annex slabs to some sites, shade to most sites, adequate taps close by. Basic laundry, secure entry. Noisy, claustrophobic park, plenty of shade. Suitable for few days, suitable for families.
Dislikes: Situated next to local soccer ground and can be noisy at night after a match. Lots of fishermen stay here and create much noise in the early hours of the morning, no consideration for others. It appears that management have no control over guests. Amenities need a good going over from top to bottom, remove the cobwebs. Sullage at waterfront sites is discharged to the beach! We would not stay here again under any circumstances.
Parking: Small area before boom gates.

Manager's name is Shane & Mim. This park is a ex Beston Park with the name changed to Discovery Holiday Parks, their prices were high but as a FPA member I had discount but paid $20.00 deposit for boom gate pass $74.00 for two days. When we were there they were having problems with the hot water. It is bad when you have a site on the beach front when there is strong wind from the gulf. Friendly staff, good staff response to complaints, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($27.00 2A per night powered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to only some sites, cleanliness was average, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was inadequate hot water, soap provided, paper towels/dryer provided. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, average sized sites. Basic laundry, good camp kitchen, dump point, secure entry. Quiet, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere, no permanents. Clean bbq (free). Good playground in average condition. No pool. Suitable for few days, suitable for families, well maintained park, park is considered kid-safe.
Likes: Neat & tidy but some sites you need extra water hose.
Dislikes: We asked for a power site near the amenity block, but because we had our dog we were put at the end of the park in the dog area, this is no good when we both have bad legs and can not walk to far.
Parking: There is a booking in area before the office.
Local Information: The coach tour to the BHP steel works is a must. Fishing from the beach and jetty, the lookout above the city centre and gulf or the Westlands shopping centre at Whyalla Norrie.

Likes: Location - is absolute beachfront.
Dislikes: Facilities under new management are dirty. Corners of the shower and toilet cubicles are not being cleaned. Shower cubicle are not particularly clean. Paint peeling in strips in ladies shower. Washing machines caked with old suds. Sad to see what were good facilities looking so rundown.

Manager's name is Joe Street. Have reviewed this park previously and stayed before. A good spot as usual with absolute beachfront. Had dogs, so had front corner area where it was allocated for dog owners. A bit of a walk to main amenities, also up stairs, which are located centrally in the park and two showers I had were not overly hot (late afternoon). Has other facilities as needed, a few permanents, lots of cabins (one night was a little rowdy) and nice small BBQ undercover area. Fantastic sea views - tide out during afternoon and people walking at least 2 km out on sand raking crabs or walking dogs. There is a bit of shade in park but we scored a site that had no shade which made days very warm - plus you are exposed to winds straight up the gulf so very windy spot even when no wind blowing in town. If you can get a spot out of the wind that would be better. On the upside, the view down gulf was terrific, very relaxing to be on edge of beach and when not so windy, sea breeze gave great relief from heat - guess you can't have it both ways. More trees have been taken down since last here which is a shame, and while we were here they are installing yet more cabins on southern side of park - to probably cater for boom region. Although expensive the largest cabins are excellent with double doors onto balcony and great views. Mixture of grass (beachfront) and gravel (main part of park) sites, all of which are level and some of which have sullage. There is a very small basic playground but the jumping air pillow is a treat for kids. Whyalla still booming and good base to explore region such as point lowly (see separate review of that camping ground) and after five nights felt could stay another night or two. Can be very relaxing sitting outside caravan (albeit in the gusty gulf wind) just looking at the sea and people walking dogs etc. Friendly staff, staff explained park layout and facilities. Good value for money ($32 2A 2C per night powered). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is reasonable, there was inadequate hot water, good night lighting, average sized sites, concrete annex slabs, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Good laundry, no rec room, late checkout allowed (up to noon), secure entry. Open & roomy park, not enough shade, family/friendly atmosphere. Clean UC gas bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. Basic playground in average condition. No pool. Suitable for a week or more, well maintained park.
Likes: Great views, good facilities overall and a very relaxing stay.
Dislikes: Being on the sites that are absolute beachfront you are exposed to the strong breezes that come up the gulf. Bit of a walk to amenities and no shade at our site. Only other minor issue is that park is reasonably big, more cabins installed, but only one main BBQ area and amenities.
Local Information: Whyalla is a great town especially after you look past all the red dust! Meals at newly opened and aptly named Red Dust Bar & Grill are excellent (restaurant quality at just a touch above pub meal prices!) also Sundowner Hotel have good meals. Westland shopping centre has about 50 shops, including full size Target and McDouall Stuart Avenue has many other stores too (plus further down, Harris Scarfe). Hummock Hill is a must - still provides great 360 views and main street nice little shopping precinct. I literally hand fed a Dolphin (a bunch of 5 of them are considered locals) from the boat ramp thanks to a local who gave me and kids a fish to use, most amazing experience. Drive out to Point Lowly and Fitzgerald Bay also nice. If you have 4WD you can drive up Mt Laura and follow track behind it into conservation park and visit Wild Dog Hill picnic area.

Wirrulla Caravan Park, Wirrulla
Wirrulla is not big. Just follow the caravan park signs. It's in front of the Hotel. This is a very basic caravan park essentially offered by the town as a courtesy to passing travellers. It consists of a large flat concrete slab which would adequately take about four vans. (Setting up a tent may be difficult) It has accessible power, toilet and shower facilities. Nearby is an undercover BBQ area with seating and grassed area. Rubbish and recycling facilities are also provided. It is off the main road and lovely and quiet. Cost is $5 to an honesty box and another $5 for the showers. Pick up the shower block key from the hotel. The good people of Wirrulla display are great sense of humour which can be noted from the toilet block name (The Thunderdome) and from the large tourist attraction in the centre of town. We were pleased we took the time to stay here rather than at one of the large chains in a larger town.

Gawler Ranges Motel and Caravan Park, Wudinna
Small park 1km east of town on Eyre Highway behind the motel. Ph: 08 8680 2090.
Friendly resident owners Sandy Alexander & Lyle Wallace. Gravel surface, reasonable sized sites, some drive-through. Minimal shade. Town water and power close. Other park taps have salty water. One central sullage. Ladies amenities recently revamped to moulded plastic ensuite style. Nice touches with flowers and handtowels, clean, but seriously inadequate numbers. Hot water very variable. Aside from the three ensuites, one out of order at time of our stay, there is only one other toilet and one tiny hand basin at far end of narrow access corridor. Gents amenities basic, strong hot water, cubicles roomy. Restaurant, indoor pool and spa (fee), bbq area fairly run down. Owners are gradually making improvements but it is a very harsh environment in any season. Suitable as overnighter. $18 (2A, powered) good value.
