Great place to stay over night. You can reach Copper Hills station from here and the Painted Desert. What a lovely clean road house, the couple running it are so friendly and nice to all. When asked about staying they tell you of the Free camping first ($2 per head for water and showers) then mention you can have a powered site for $20.00 per night for as many people as you like. Great hot water and lovely clean toilet block, good cheap meals at the pub. Would recommend to any one to stay here. Very friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was lower than expected, very good value for money ($4.00 2A per night unpowered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to all sites, were clean, condition is very good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, dry change area, paper towels/dryer provided, exhaust fans/good ventilation. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, large sites, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by. Good laundry, kiosk. Quiet, open & roomy park, not enough shade, family/friendly atmosphere.
Local Information: Copper Hill station, Painted Desert.
Park Rating 3.5: Suitable for few days.

Oasis Tourist Park, Coober Pedy
Hutchison Street (main street), off Stuart Highway. 600m north of post office opposite drive-in. Ph: 08 8672 5169 or 1800 060 541. BIG4 member. No pets.
We had an ensuite site, and had trouble getting our 20'6" van into the site. In order not to block our door into the side of the ensuite, we had no room left to put the car, and weren't able to open the awning or we wouldn't have been able to open the ensuite door. Smaller vans wouldn't have as much trouble. The ensuite was good, with good towel rails and a cupboard. No water to the van on most sites, including the ensuite sites, although there were a few drive through sites that appeared to have water. Some sites near the front of the park had shade cloth over, the rest weren't shaded. Average staff friendliness, good staff response to complaints, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($36.50 2A per night, ensuite, peak season). Water pressure is bad, there was adequate hot water, extra charge for shower. Adequate number of tourist sites, some unlevel sites, good night lighting, small sites, no sites with concrete annex slabs, shade to some sites, drive-through sites, hard to negotiate into site, adequate sullage close by. Good laundry, good rec room, dump point. Quiet, open & roomy park, not enough shade, family/friendly atmosphere, a few permanents. Clean UC gas bbq ($1), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. No playground. Clean pool is shaded, pool area not considered kid-safe, tables and chairs provided. Suitable for few days, suitable for families, well maintained park, park is considered kid-safe.
Added Touches: Discount vouchers for pizza place and next door servo - which already had the cheapest diesel in town so the extra 2c off per litre was a bargain. Tours offered, if you go on the morning tour you can leave your vehicle in the park on the day of departure.
Local Information: We were there on Easter Saturday for the Opal Festival - a real old fashioned picnic atmosphere. Started with a parade of floats down the main street and finished with fireworks and a band in the evening. Most of the town seemed to be there, it was a lot of fun.

Park is pretty good for Coober Pedy as there is not a blade of grass in the town. Friendly staff and great tours from the park itself with the owner George. Water is a precious resource in Coober Pedy so fill your tanks before you get there as there are no taps on sites. You can fill your tanks down the road before you leave and costs 20c for 10 litres, showers are 20c for 2 minutes. Good management, friendly management, management was helpful. Good value for money. Good amenities, close to sites, were clean. Good sites, sites were level. Laundry. Good atmosphere to park, quiet. Suitable for a few days.
Likes: Tours and proximity to town.
Dislikes: Not to much due to limited water in town.
Parking: Some sites were a little small.

Follow signs through town centre. Gravel sites, some a bit small. Because of the nature of Coober Pedy a bit dusty and dry, but that's to be expected. Could do with another washing machine in lower section of the camp. Clean facilities, bit old. Very friendly owners Robyn and George Russell. Tours from caravan park were excellent - Breakaways for sunset and town tour. Enjoyed our 3 night stay, will go again.

Opal Inn Caravan Park, Coober Pedy
Ph: 08 8672 5501. Top Tourist member. Directly opposite the Tourist Information Office.
This park is in a central situation in the main street. Located at rear of motel and hotel premises. Check-in is at the motel reception office. A member of Top Tourist Parks. The procedure upon arrival is to pick a site and sign in later. The cost of $28 per night 2A less the 10% discount was quite fair and reasonable. Access to the sites was not quite clear as it was necessary to ensure that you were not parked on a double site. Some sites were quite 'cosy' in that we were backed right up to the other van on our double sited block. There was no grass or concrete slabs for any site nor was there water to connect to the van. Water in the park was drinkable and tanks could be filled at a particular outlet in the park and also in the town for a small cost. As was expected there was plenty of dust around. The amenities were fine but not cleaned every day. The laundry was one of the rare ones that provided a hot water wash for only $3. TV and phone reception were good. The park was filled by 4pm each day. Discounts were given for the bottle shop and adjoining bistro etc. Once set up it was not necessary to use your car to get around town everything is a short walk to nearby shops. A good tour to really see the area was the Desert Caves tour. The coach picks up from the front of the park.
Likes: Its central location
Dislikes: Very small sites.

Ribia's Caravan Park, Coober Pedy
William Creek Road. Turn off on the William Creek Road south of Coober Pedy and the park is 1.5 kms down on the right hand side. Park is privately owned and is situated 2 kms before you get to Coober Pedy coming from the south. Ph: 08 8672 5614. All pets allowed.
Manager's name is Rick & Barbara This is a very interesting park set amongst the mine mounds on the outskirts of Coober Pedy. This park not only has sites for caravans, but also has underground camping facilities and underground budget accommodation. Rick and Barbara make you very welcome. Like most caravan parks in Coober Pedy water is extremely scarce, so make sure you have sufficient water in the van as you can't connect up to water, but there is drinking water available from the camp kitchen. Riba's is the only park that doesn't charge for showers. This is a very small park with a limited number of powered sites, although they are currently waiting for an electrician to put in power to the current unpowered sites. Very friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($22 2A per night powered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to all sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is bad, there was adequate hot water, dry change area, exhaust fans/good ventilation, disabled facilities. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, poor water quality. Good laundry, good camp kitchen. Peaceful, open and roomy, not enough shade, family/friendly atmosphere, no permanents. Clean UC gas bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. No playground, no pool. Suitable for a few days, suitable for families, well maintained park, park is considered kid-safe.
Likes: The park is out of the town and is very peaceful.
Parking: At reception.
Added Touches: Rick does a mine tour by appointment, as the park is built over the old mine and if you take the tour then you get a discount on your first night's accommodation.
Local Information: Would recommend you do the town tour which leaves daily at 1.30 from the tourist centre. You can easily spend a few days visiting the underground houses, churches and Tom's Mine and browsing the numerous shops selling opals. Another must is to watch the sunset over the Breakaways (where the Mad Max films were made).
Roads: Good.

Stuart Range Caravan Park, Coober Pedy
Corner Hutchinson Street and Stuart Highway, 800 m south of post office. Ph: 08 8672 5179. This park is easy to find - the first park coming into Coober Pedy from the south. Family Parks member. Dogs on leash.
Manager's name is Yanni. Very friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($40.50 A3 2C per night, powered, off-peak season). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to all sites, were clean, condition is very good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, extra charge for shower, dry change area, exhaust fans/good ventilation. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, large sites, no sites with concrete annex slabs, very few sites are shaded, drive-through sites. Basic laundry, no rec room, good camp kitchen, dump point. Peaceful, open & roomy park, not enough shade, family/friendly atmosphere. Pets at manager's discretion. Clean UC gas bbq (pay), dismal bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. Excellent playground in good condition. Clean pool is shaded, kid-safe pool area, toddlers catered for. Suitable for a week or more, suitable for families, well maintained park, park is considered kid-safe.
Likes: Own pizzeria on site and although they got our order wrong it was still good, run a bus tour from the park each day which was not cheap but well worth it.
Dislikes: No grass but level clean sites, no water or sullage on our site, has a water filling facility on site which is very cheap to fill but not practical for moving a fifth wheeler every day to fill up tank, didn't mind paying for showers but would rather they charged more each night and had water on each site.
Parking: At reception

Stayed 2 days, powered site, $23.40 per night Family Parks member, (no water to site). Friendly staff. We had stayed here in April 2007 and were very happy in this park as it was clean, quiet and friendly. We were told to choose a site and chose Site No. 13, a large level site at the back of the park. People do not walk through your site if you are parked on the outside area of this park. This park has an oval configuration with amenities block in the centre, so is close to all sites. Amenities block was clean and well maintained, as was the laundry. Washing machines $2.20, the cheapest on our trip so far. Charge for showers (20 cents for 3 mins). Poor night lighting – some globes had blown, others had been damaged. Some sites were under cover but you have to be early to get them. We did not want to park there because the sites are tight with very little air circulating. Plus it was not hot. Good large under-cover bbq area with paid electric bbq. Permanents are housed in a separate fenced-off area. Nice motel and gardens. Lovely swimming pool under cover. Excellent well maintained playground. We again enjoyed a delicious pizza at the pizza bar but you must order early or you will have a very long wait. Locals also come here for their pizzas. There is lots to see and do in Coober Pedy and the Information Bureau are very helpful. Mail run is highly recommended but you have to book. Would recommend this park for any length of time.

Well signposted on right just after turning off Stuart Highway. Res owner John Athanasiadis. Reception staff congenial. Layout explained, as well as local attractions being promoted by this park. Eat-in pizza bar on premises. Large, well laid out park. Choose your own site. Paved access roads, natural gravel sites, level, good size, divided by young trees. 8 drive-through sites under shade cloth. Power and sullage close but no individual water supply. Water can be bucketed from camp kitchen. Modern amenities block, very clean, adequate to cope with the school holiday numbers, good hot water, coin op at 20c for a generous 3 minutes. Closed for cleaning for an unusually long period of 2 hours late morning. Coin op bbqs in large open sided camp kitchen with long bench seating. Fridge, washing up sinks. Satisfactory laundry. Well equipped and very popular playground adjacent. Noise from children might bother some. Large shaded pool, wading pool. 10 minute cycle ride on the flat to town centre. Free 1/2 hour internet access at Visitors' Centre. At $22 (2A powered) good value. Would certainly return to this park which compares extremely favourably with other alternatives in town.

Stayed 4 days, $22.00 powered site (no water to site). First park on entering Coober Pedy, approx 800m from town (far enough not to be bothered by the locals). Paul at reception was very helpful and gave us some information on Coober Pedy, including details of a tour run by the Park, plus a menu for pizzas that he makes in the evening. I had previously telephoned to make a booking for an under-cover site, but was told that they did not take bookings and the under-cover parking was available on a first in basis. We arrived approximately 2.00pm and all undercover spots were taken, but it is a large park so we choose a site near the ablutions block. The sites are spacious, on gravel, but little shade. The park is designed in an oval configuration so all sites are fairly close to the very clean ablutions block, with good pressure (a charge of 20 cents for 3 minutes shower). There is an under cover bbq/camp area with bench tables and seats, with a sink for dishwashing. Pets allowed under supervision. Very poor night lighting. Excellent play area and also beautiful swimming pool near reception. Excellent pizzas prepared by Paul with a 10% discount if you take a very informative bus tour of Coober Pedy ($40.00 pm tour: $30.00 am tour). We also had a good meal at Tom and Mary's Greek Taverna, and also took a mail run tour (which runs Mondays and Thursdays) to Oodnadatta and William Creek ($165.00 p/p for 12 hour trip). Our bus driver, Peter Rowe, kept us very entertained with history and stories of the area. He probably could talk under water if he had to, but was a fountain of information. We had a most enjoyable tiring day, and would recommend this trip. There is plenty to see around Coober Pedy. This park is an excellent, clean, quiet park with friendly owners and we would definitely stay again. Suitable for any length of stay.

No complaints about this park. It typifies Coober Pedy - gravel, not a blade of grass to be seen. Trees don't grow naturally in this area, so the park owners are doing well with a large number growing nicely. The amenities are clean, well maintained, but you do have to pay for showers - 20cents should be enough - even for hair washing. Water is scarce, so no taps to sites. The park offers a terrific 5 hour tour to The Breakaways and around the mining areas and town - $40.00 each - well worth it. The pizzas are as good as reported and Tom & Marys Greek Taverna in town is fantastic. Free internet at information centre just down the road. Visit the Golf Course, Umoona Mine & Museum, underground church. Drive or take a tour to The Breakaways, dingo fence, opal fields.
Date 08/2006. Park Rating 4: Need a few days to take to take Coober Pedy in.
Report submitted by FnJ, Sunshine Coast.

Located just off the main highway on the southern side of town. Mainly geared for the overnighter, and with its drive through sites clustered around a very well maintained ablutions block, this park is a great place to stay. Good camp kitchen and washing up facilities. Good laundry. Showers need 20 cents to turn on, but we found you could have a good shower for that - if very dusty, you might need 40cents. The shower block is closed for a couple of hours from 10am, but the maintenance could not be questioned. The cleaner is a colourful character if you can put up with a few expletives - pretty much applies to a lot of Coober Pedy. A fascinating but dusty place. Worth a 3/4 day stay. The park provides a guided tour of the town and surrounds - it is a must see, particularly the underground church. Will stay again. Avoid the hot months, the place is dusty and can be unpleasant when the wind springs up. But it is worth the experience. Good management, friendly management, management responsive to comments, management was helpful. Good value for money. Very good amenities, adequate number to cater for tourists, close to sites, were clean, were in good condition, water pressure was okay, there was adequate hot water. Good sites, adequate number of tourist sites, sites were level, lighting at night was adequate, the site size was okay, drive-through sites were available. Laundry, good camp kitchen. Park atmosphere was okay.

Upon turning off Stuart Highway, the Caravan Park is the first entrance on the right. Cannot be missed. Whilst the park is very barren due to lack of water for grass, the park is very clean and well set out. No water is available to Vans, and showers cost 20c. Distance of 800m from town reduces possibility of vagrants & unoccupied youths wandering the town streets entering the Park. Friendly staff, no complaints, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($22 2A per night powered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to all sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, extra charge for shower, paper towels/dryer provided. Adequate number of tourist sites, all level sites, poor night lighting, large sites, drive-through sites, adequate sullage close by. Basic laundry, good camp kitchen. Peaceful, open and roomy, family/friendly atmosphere. No permanents. Pets at manager's discretion. Clean $1 electric bbq in good UC area, bbq area lighting, seating provided. Good playground in average condition. Clean pool is shaded. A well maintained park.
Likes: Good space for each Van and away from any outside wandering people.
Dislikes: Paying for the Showers.
Parking: Excellent parking space whilst waiting to book in.
Added Touches: Discounts on pizzas from the Parks owners.
Local Information: This park has an excellent local area tour.

Coward Springs Campground, Coward Springs
On Oodnadatta Track, 130km NW of Marree. This is a seasonal bush camping area. It cost us $16 per night 2A. Sites are gravel, mostly bays and drive in areas amongst bushes and trees. Sites are unpowered, contain a place for a campfire. The amenities are reasonably central, clean, recently built in rustic style - well done. One does not measure this facility against conventional criteria - it is a pleasant and "different" place to camp. It has a "spa" - a natural warm artesian spring, walled with logs; although not large this is great for a soak. Because this is such an unusual and pleasant facility on the Oodnadatta Track, it can get very full by late afternoon. Friendly management.
Likes: Love the camp sites amongst the old tamarisk trees, and having a campfire. The artesian "spa" is excellent.
Dislikes: Can get muddy quickly, with rain.
Local Information: Campground operators are restoring the Coward Springs former Ghan buildings, which is of historic interest. Can be used as a base from which to drive to Blanche and Bubbler Mound Springs.
Roads: Gravel road, usually fairly good. Will be closed if rain makes boggy patches.

No bookings taken, first in is best dressed. You pick a spot next to your choice of piece of grass, because you are parking on the roadway they are all equivalent to drive through sites. Check services first - most spots didn't have water, just power. Average staff friendliness, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was lower than expected, reasonable value for money ($18 2A per night, powered Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, cleanliness was average, condition is poor, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, paper towels/dryer provided, exhaust fans/good ventilation. Quiet, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, no permanents. Dirty UC gas bbq (free), dismal bbq area atmosphere. Dirty pool, pool is open to sun, kid-safe pool area, toddlers catered for. Suitable for overnighter, suitable for families.
Dislikes: Facilities were not well maintained, some showers had a tap missing or spurted water all over, no shower curtains meant 'dry' area was wet and dirty after the first shower. No plugs or soap for basins. BBQs were in poor condition, with warped plates and very dirty.
Added Touches: Road house has general store, fuel, bar, cafe, post office, Commonwealth bank branch.
Local Information: Spend an extra night and do a day trip down the Oodnadatta Track, lunch at the Pink Roadhouse in Oodnadatta then return via the Painted Desert. The trip down is a bit boring, easy dirt road (the interesting bits of the track seem to be south of Oodnadatta where the old Ghan railway ran) but the trip back is fantastic, 4WD only. Deflate tyres at Marla as per Pink Roadhouse website, reinflate at Cadney Homestead.

A clean well-maintained park well suited to overnight stays. It has a most bizarre layout for van parking - which costs it about 25% of available space, but maintains small patches of grass. Mostly a motel, supermarket, bar & cafe. The ablution block is modern and light and airy. Some sites will require you to use a torch to get to them at night. Fuel, post office, bank, and motor repairs were all included within the complex. Friendly staff, staff explained park layout and facilities. Marree Drover's Rest Caravan Park, Marree
On the main road through Marree, about 1km south of town centre. Close to junction of Oodnadatta and Birdsville Tracks. It is on the eastern side of the road. Ph: 08 8675 8371. Dogs allowed.
Manager's name is Eric Oldfield. Cost us $20 per night 2A, powered site. This is very much a no-frills base for a night or two. Ground is gravel. Sites can be drive through. There are some sites with shade trees. Some sites have taps but Marree town water can have a very strong laxative effect. Amenities are very basic donga, with some lack of privacy due to use of curtains as partitions. There was adequate hot water and they were clean. There would not be an adequate number if the park was busy, but this would be very unusual. There is some lighting at night. No pool or playground. There is a form of camp kitchen. Friendly management was helpful. Suitable for overnighter
Likes: Eric Oldfield is living history as former boss drover. We like its position away from the town and hence its quietness.
Local Information: As a former depot for old Ghan railway and Afghan camel trains, Marree has historical interest. It can be a base for a day trip to Muloorina and Lake Eyre at Level Post Bay.
Roads: Lyndhurst to Marree good gravel road. Oodnadatta Track to north-west usually reasonably good gravel, can be some corrugations. Birdsville Track to north can vary from good gravel to impassable if wet. At Marree there are large sign boards showing whether these tracks are open or not.

Dingo's Caravan Park, William Creek
On western side of track through William Creek, set back about 200m. This is a new caravan park. We paid $20 per night 2A, powered site. Sites are gravel, drive through style. There was no shade. The amenities were new, clean, excellent, adequate hot water; at one side of the caravan area, so a bit of a walk from the most distant sites. Amenities had wheelchair access. Some basic supplies and food were available from shop/office. Friendly management was helpful. Suitable for overnighter.
Likes: Modern, clean.
Local Information: Scenic flights available from airstrip within walking distance of caravan park - over Lake Eyre, Painted Hills. William Creek Hotel is atmospheric.
Roads: Gravel road, usually reasonable condition. Will be closed if rain makes it too boggy.
Date 05/2007. Park Rating 2.5:
