Very quiet park. Park generator operates 7.30am to 1am. Portable amenities. Free BBQ's. 17km off main road over dirt and windy road. Amenities not cleaned whilst we were there but not many people were there at the same time. Friendly staff. Price was higher than expected, poor value for money ($32 2A 2C per night powered). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to most sites, were dirty, condition is poor, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, some level sites, poor night lighting, average sized sites.
Park Rating 2: Suitable for overnighter.

Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary and Resort, Arkaroola
110 km east of Leigh Creek/Copley or 170 km north of Wilpena Pound. Coming via Leigh Creek is a good bitumen road up to Copley, then 110 km of gravel to Arkaroola. Alternatively good bitumen to the Wilpena Pound turn off, then 170 km of gravel. From Yunta on Barrier Highway, through Frome Downs, 288km of pretty good gravel. Departed to Copley via Balcanoona and Nepaburra; 140km, again good gravel. Need to slow down for floodway dips on these roads. Ph: 08 8648 4848 or 1800 676 042. It is a sanctuary - no pets.
This is a facility in a remote and arid area, so expectations should be appropriate. The environment is superb, the facilities quite adequate for a stay of a week or more. The surface is bare ground, so sites are not always dead level, but there are plenty suitable for vans. The size is adequate or better, even for big vans or motorhomes. The main sites have trees/shrubs between sites. There are two "upper" rows of sites that are most used and have the best facilities. The lower area is partly unpowered, and more of an overflow area (or for those who want to be away from neighbours). Guests select their own sites. Some basic supplies available at office. Campground guests are able to use the pool at the "motel" section: the campground is about 500m distant from office and other accommodation. The resort sells fuel, does tyre repairs and basic mechanical work. Useful visitor information and maps were available. 6 inch masonry nails are a recommended alternative to tent pegs here. There is plenty of room for kids to run around in, but not much provided in the way of formal play facilities. It is hard to rate this place by conventional standards because it is so unique. Average management, the quality of reception staff was variable - some were very helpful, two were disinterested. Reasonable value for money, cost us $20 per night for 2 - $120 for week as 7th night was free. Average amenities, adequate number to cater for tourists, were clean, there was adequate hot water. The amenities are basic, were cleaned daily, basically painted cement block, no fancy tile work. They are close to some sites, but a distance from the further sites. Good sites, adequate number of tourist sites, the site size was okay, drive-through sites were available. Our site was powered, had tap, had fire pit (BYO wood). Laundry, washing machines were slow. Very good park atmosphere, quiet, open and roomy park. Good clean pool. Suitable for a week or more.
Likes: The setting is very scenic and dramatic. Being able to have a campfire on site is great. Some excellent walks accessible from campground. Also some excellent drives - most not suitable for a low clearance city vehicle though. It is a comfortable base for day trips into the Gammon Ranges National Park.
Local Information: The Ridge Top Tour is a must-do.

Report submitted by Wendy & John.

Considering the remote location, sites very cheap at $15 unpowered and $20 powered. Lovely outlook set amongst hills. Pleasant location. Water precious, hence low water pressure and water saver shower heads. Washing machine free, no need for driers in such a dry climate. Phone box on site. Features such as air tours, and astronomical Observatory were expensive. Fuel on site (only fuel outlet in region). Display of rocks. Average staff friendliness. Price was lower than expected, good value for money ($15 2A per night unpowered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to only some sites, were dirty, condition is reasonable, water pressure is bad, there was adequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, average sized sites, drive-through sites. Basic laundry. Peaceful, open & roomy park, not enough shade, no permanents.
Likes: Adequate facilities at a good price
Dislikes: Cleaning of amenities block was superficial - they were left with dust and dirt.
Roads: Drive with caution due to dips. Dirt road, but suitable for 2wd at low speeds.
Date 04/2006. Park Rating 3.5: Suitable for few days.

Carrieton is a very small village between Orroroo and Hawker. One block off Main Road. Ph: 08 8658 9090. Dogs allowed.

A community run facility using the closed school in a very small settlement in the more arid region of SA. A good stopover on the way to the Flinders Ranges. Sites dirt and some grass. SC and backpacker style accommodation also available. Lovely distant landscape over paddocks. We had it all to ourselves when overnighting, quiet! Could almost hear the sounds of children playing from the long distant past! Friendly management. Reasonable value for money. Very good amenities, close to sites, were clean, water pressure was okay, there was adequate hot water, sites were level, lighting at night was adequate, the site size was okay, drive-through sites were available, adequate taps close by. Laundry. Quiet. Clean UC bbq, lit at night, with seating provided. The park was well maintained.
Likes: Friendly locals.
Roads: This route to the northern areas of SA is now all bitumen and an easy pleasant drive.

Cockburn Caravan Park, Cockburn
Cockburn is a tiny village near the border of South Australia and NSW, on the Barrier Highway. Turn right across the railway line at Cockburn, then left and stop at the post office (labelled "Rural School") to pay for site and obtain directions. Ph: 08 8091 1999.
Manager's name is Iris. This is not, strictly speaking a van park yet. The site has "dongas" for nearby mine workers complete with available kitchen and bathroom. The owner of the site, Iris, is upgrading the facilities for the van area which is near the dongas. When we arrived on a very cold winter's afternoon the van amenity facilities were in the process of receiving their upgrade and were closed, so we were invited to use the bathroom near the dongas. It was clean and complete with soap and towels. The owner and a friend were nearby and after the very welcome hot shower they offered us an even more welcome glass of red. They proved to be two delightful ladies with interesting life stories and we will always stop by at Cockburn when travelling in the area again. Very friendly staff. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($10 2A per night, off-peak period). Some unlevel sites. Peaceful. No pool. Suitable for overnighter.

The Brook Caravan Park, Crystal Brook
Also known as Crystal Brook Caravan Park. On the Eyre Road 500 m north of post office. Well signposted. Ph: 08 8636 2640. All pets allowed.

Manager's name is Peter. The Brook is a community managed Park which is owned by the Pirie council. When I rang to enquiry about booking a site I was told by Peter no need just rock up. Peter is the caretaker and is very friendly and helpful and lives onsite. It is a open park with lots of gumtrees around the edges which have been pruned for safety. 22 powered sites and a huge unpowered area. There are 4 permanent sites. Eftpos is available. The sites are large enough to take large 40’ coaches and trailers. Very friendly staff, good staff response to complaints, staff offered tourist advice, van parking assistance provided by staff, staff helped us at the site. Price was as expected, good value for money ($108.00 2A per week, powered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to all sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, dry change area, paper towels/dryer provided, exhaust fans/good ventilation. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, large sites, no sites with concrete annex slabs, shade to most sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Basic laundry, no rec room. Quiet, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere. 2 clean electric bbqs (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, a large under cover seating area as well. No playground, no pool. Suitable for a week or more, suitable for families.
Dislikes: The only complaint I have with the park is that the hot water is gravity feed which I spoke to Peter about and it is in the pipeline to be changed over to solar hot water with mains pressure. But being a committee managed park this all takes time.

Very pleasant location beside the normally dry crystal brook, with many grand old gums, but there is space to avoid being directly under them. Adjacent to the oval and across the road from the golf course. Town has all needed supplies, and is walking distance from park. Amenities are old, but clean and serviceable. Good friendly management, management was helpful. Good value for money; rate was $18 per night 2A in a powered site. Glendambo Roadhouse and Caravan Park, Glendambo
600 kms north of Adelaide on the Stuart Highway, near the BP service station (book in at service station). Ph: 08 8672 1035.
Glendambo is about 580 kms from Adelaide on the Stuart Highway, so is well placed as a stopping point after a day on the road. It is a shame the park is not better maintained. The showers enclosures are large, and the water temperature and pressure is good, but there are no screens or other means to stop the water going everywhere, and no bench or shelf to place your clothes or toiletries bag etc. Some shower doors have one or two hooks, but not all, and the shower head in the one I used was 'stuffed' (technical term) and could not be aimed where wanted. Friendly staff. Cost was reasonable at $20.50 2A per night, powered, off-peak season, but some of that could be spent on upgrading the amenities blocks (showers in particular) and providing better toilet paper - I would bet my pension that the owners do not use the same flimsy paper. Adequate number of tourist sites, all level sites, good night lighting, large sites, drive-through sites. Suitable for overnighter.

Manager John & Corrie Sitters. The best park by far in the surrounding districts, all the ground is gravelled and many trees and green lawns for campers, all over neat and tidy and not dusty. Bore water on tap but rain water from tanks. Very friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, very good value for money ($21 2A per night powered). Jamestown Country Retreat, Jamestown
Formerly the Jamestown Caravan Park. 103 Ayr Street. From the Broken Hill/Adelaide road, turn to Jamestown (near Peterborough) and head through town, travelling west - over the creek, its on the left. Ph:08 8664 0077.
Easy to find: just to the west of the town centre on the road to Port Pirie. At first glance it doesn’t look very attractive; lots of bare earth (probably due to drought conditions) and a lot of gravelled surfaces, with various shades of gravel. The roadways and all the sites are gravel. There are a number of mature gum trees and, in the centre, a green, but fairly weedy lawn area. New cabins have been installed, which look attractive and there are new, matching, amenity blocks so a definite attempt appears to have been made to improve the general appearance. The showers are water savers so the flow of water is not great but enough to get clean. Most of the permanents are at one side of the park and the tourist sites are on the other side. Management seem friendly and helpful. Town centre is only 200m away. A basic park at a reasonable price: $22 2A per night. Well worth a night or two. We would be happy to stay there again.

Likes: Close to town easy walking. Not big park only 40 sites
Dislikes: There after heavy rain most grass sites were under water, roads and other sites very muddy. Only two showers and toilets for park.

This is a community owned park that is situated close to shops. There are some drive thru sites with concrete annex slabs and gravel based caravan stand. There are also grassed sites with concrete slabs. The amenities are good however; they would struggle to cope if the park were full. There is a shelter with electric bbq (pay) and a further electric bbq (free) located in the park immediately across the road. This park also has an excellent playground for children. Bookings are essential for folk fair weekend, which is generally held the second weekend in April. At $15 per night this park represents excellent value. A good stop off point on the way to the northern Flinders Ranges. Friendly management, management was helpful. Very good value for money. Good amenities, close to sites, were clean, were in good condition, water pressure was okay, there was adequate hot water. Good sites, adequate number of tourist sites, sites were level, lighting at night was adequate. Laundry. Good atmosphere to park, quiet, open and roomy park, shady park, family-friendly park. Melrose Caravan Park, Melrose
280 kms north of Adelaide, on Joes Road. If coming from Adelaide, turn right on main street and Joes Road is next left at the tourist information map (signposted). The turnoff is opposite the Mt Remarkable Hotel. Ph: 08 8666 2060. Dogs on leash.
Manager's name is Marina Supple. Smallish caravan park located on side of creek bed (othersider of creek bed though is an extensive bush camping area) and at foot of Mt Remarkable with mainly grassy level sites. Kangaroo frequented park, very peaceful, stayed only with one other caravan (who we found out are applying for manager job). Current managers very friendly, lots of good advice and tourism tips but unfortunately on their last days here and will be replaced soon. In middle of town area so easy walk to shops, playground, park and of course walking trails up (5 hrs) and around base (30 mins+ walks) of Mt Remarkable. One amenities block but clean (as you would expect for being just one of two tenants) and seated BBQ area. Type of park that I don't know if I would like if overcrowded - nice peaceful atmosphere. For this type of park in tourist area, very good value for money. Only real issue was noisy corellas requiring the odd gunshot and crack of whip to disperse. Very friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was lower than expected, very good value for money ($25 2A 2C powered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to all sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, mostly level sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Basic laundry. Noisy, open & roomy park, plenty of shade. Clean gas bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere. Suitable for few days, well maintained park.
Likes: Great atmosphere, its location, very shady and tree-lined creek, close for town and bushwalks (don't need to use your car much) and of course the semi permanent resident native (kangaroo).
Dislikes: As with many parks and towns in this region, Corellas are very noisy. A few gunshots and a crack of the whip from locals demonstrates their low tolerance so must be an ongoing issue.
Parking: Oldest town in the wider Flinders and one of those quaint little historic towns that is really nice to visit, including the pub for meals, museums, bushwalks, picnic area and just enjoying a small country town at the foot of a large hill. Plenty of drives around the place to explore (hopefully new managers will give as much detail as Marina). Great area to use your mountain bikes, and around Easter every year there is a big mountain bike festival hosted by the town making it a very busy place.
Added Touches: Really great friendly assistance from Marina and tourist info. Shame they are moving on.
Local Information: All bitumen.

Melrose is a pretty town at the base of Mt Remarkable in the lower Flinders Ranges. The park is in an ideal location beside the gum tree lined creek and both lawn and gravel sites are available. Drums for campfires are a useful convenience. Alligator Gorge, Wirrabara Forest and the famous Stone Hut bakery are all short drives from Melrose and the town itself has many historic attractions - it is the oldest town in the Flinders Ranges. There are two excellent hotels, an award winning museum and Bluey Blundstones Coffee Shop is a must see located in an old blacksmiths shop. The walk up Mt Remarkable is challenging but worthwhile (5 hr return). Melrose is a brilliant spot for mountain bike riders and many trails can be found close to the caravan park. Ask for the map. Park staff are friendly and provided local information, maps and a walking guide to the town. Facilities are of average cleanliness and would be adequate for most times but the shower water was not always hot. There are a number of modern cabins and an enormous camping area across the creek. It is worth spending a few days in this area.

This park is within the National Park. It has a number of unpowered sites, all flat and well located to the facilities. If you like a few day of self sufficiency it is great. Good walking trails within the Park, clean enough toilets with hot showers. Represents good value at around six dollars a night and a minimal fee for entrance to the park. Fire wood can be bought in the park. Plenty of wildlife.

Coming from south, park is at the end of town on the left. Follow the blue signs. Ph: 08 8658 1444.
Manager's name is Kym and Chris Bertram. This park would only rate a 2 or 2.5 except for the difference made by friendly, helpful staff. They made us feel so welcome that we didn't worry about the limited number of showers and toilets! There is a lesson here for park owners. Their visitors' book is replete with similar comments. Having said that, the amenities were spotless and adorned by a fresh flower (yes, even the men's). Orroroo is on the way to the Flinders Ranges, but Orroroo is an old town worth a wander around in its own right.

Port Augusta BIG4 Holiday Park, Port Augusta
Corner Eyre Highway and Stokes Terrace, 1.5 kms west of post office, near the Stuart Highway and Eyre Highway junction. Ph: 08 8642 2974 or 1800 833 444. BIG4 & Aspen Parks member. No pets.
This large park is easily located on the highway, although noise was not a problem as sites are fairly well back from roadway. We indulged in the luxury of en-suite (Site 71). It was beautifully appointed with glass shower door, vanity unit, cupboard under, fan, heater lights. It was a fairly new en-suite. No site assistance was offered on arrival, but was available if required as evidenced by the service provided automatically later in the afternoon when the majority of visitors arrive. As we had arrived early in the day perhaps the service was only 'as required'. Although the grass was missing the concrete wheel pads and annex slab overcame the abundance of red dust and soil being walked into the van and en-suite. Swimming pool was clean and safe with lots of shade. BBQs were scattered throughout the park although not near any en-suites. The park is close to town and an easy walk. If carrying shopping it may be better to take the car. Parking at reception was good as was the mobile phone reception. Average staff friendliness, average staff response to complaints Price was higher than expected, reasonable value for money ($43 2A per night, ensuite, less the 10% discount for BIG4 members). Quiet, not enough shade. Clean pool is shaded.
Likes: Loved the en-suite and its facilities. Well worth the extra expense.
Parking: Parking was adequate

We have stayed at this park before, but this time decided to try an ensuite site, and the new ones are great. We booked ahead, and just as well as the park was filling quickly when we arrived. If you want to treat yourself after a Nullarbor crossing, or after coming down from The Alice, these new ensuite sites are terrific - ask for sites in the range 41 to 46 or 63 to 75, although those in the range 72 to 75 start to get close to the main highway. We had site 71, and no problems with noise at night. These sites have concrete pads for the van and large concrete slab for the annexe. You need to back into these sites, but there is plenty of room and assistance is available. The ensuites are spacious, have loo, vanity basin/cupboard, and fibreglass/plastic shower enclosures with a glass door. The floor stays pretty much dry! Good water pressure and instant gas water heater so steady temperature. Ceiling has IXL fan/heater/light combo, and a light outside for night visits - the road lighting was broken and the area quite dark, so we left the outside light on all night. Cost was $40 per night 2A, less BIG4 member discount. Not cheap, but an occasional treat doesn't hurt does it? There are some slightly older ensuite sites as well, but I do not know the cost or condition of those. As far as the rest of the park goes, it is well maintained although it can be dusty as there was no grass (water restrictions due to the drought in SA). Good pool, rec room, TV / internet room etc. Very friendly staff, good staff response to complaints, van parking assistance provided by staff, staff helped us at the site, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, average sized sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Good camp kitchen, kiosk, dump point. Quiet, open and roomy, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere. Clean UC electric bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. Clean pool. Suitable for a week or more, suitable for families, well maintained park, park is considered kid-safe.

Stayed 1 day, $22.50 member discount powered site. This is an excellent spotless park with very helpful reception. Mick, a fountain of knowledge showed us to our site and helped us park. As we were only staying one night we got a drive through site (No 19), a bit narrow, but for 1 night was adequate. New ensuites had just been delivered and were to be placed along the fence line for caravan ensuite parking, so more improvements. Trees were being lobbed and tidied up when we were there. In summary, a highly recommended excellent spotless park, suitable for any length of time, and we would stay again but for longer.

Ranges View Rest Area, Port Augusta
A roadside camping/rest area with some facilities, located on the Stuart Highway about 55km north of Port Augusta.
Unpowered, sign posted in advance at least a kilometre atop a small hill overlooking the plains north of Port Augusta and other nearby ranges. There is only one entrance/exit but I have seen a semi parked in here, so plenty of room to do a u-turn. There is a sheltered shed roof, high enough to park caravan under, with roadside typical green hard table/chairs. A long drop toilet for male and female is also located here as well as a rainwater tank for emergency water. There are some placards under shelters outlining info about the region, which is interesting. Adjacent to toilet there is a small walking trail to seats where you can enjoy the view of surrounding plains. A camping ground, suitable only overnight, which is obviously free. I've stopped here 3 times, every time there has been one or two other overnight caravan stays too, so a bit of competition for the shelter and facilities. Road trains pass so can be a little on the noisy side, but otherwise a great peaceful spot with fantastic night-time sky views. Inadequate number of amenities, were dirty, condition is reasonable. Suitable for overnighter.

Stayed 2 nights, powered site $22.50 per night Top Tourist discount. Reception was briskly friendly. This is a large park. We were allocated site 59, given a map and found the site ourselves. Our site was a large level dirt drive-through site. Sullage provided. The two amenities blocks were very clean. In the laundry nearest to us, both commercial dryers had "out of order" signs stuck on them. Good camp kitchen, gas bbq. When we arrived we were surprised that the park was nearly empty, but there were quite a few reserved signs placed on sites. By 3.00pm vans were queuing up to enter and look for their allocated sites. We found some vans driving around a few times before they found their site. We could not understand why because the map was reasonably good. By evening the park was nearly full. Our neighbour, who said he came to this park at least twice a year, said he had never seen it so full at this time of the year. Security gate is closed at 9.00pm. A key for entry must be obtained during business hours from reception paying a deposit. Good night lighting. This is a large, good clean quiet park, suitable for any length of stay.

Easy to find, we just followed signs upon entering town. Down Main Street and to the left. There is actually another park down Main Street and to the right. Overall the park was nice and had good facilities. Was annoyed that on one day in the morning and again at night there was no hot water. Had to complain about this and about an hour after there was water just warm enough to have a shower. Also, as campers, wished they offered at least some unpowered sites. Average management, friendly management. Reasonable value for money. Average amenities, adequate number to cater for tourists, close to sites, were clean, were in good condition. Average sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Laundry, rec room, late checkout allowed (up to noon), good camp kitchen, kiosk, disabled facilities, dump point, security entry to park. Good atmosphere to park, family-friendly park. Clean UC gas bbq (free), with seating provided. Good playground, condition okay. Clean heated pool, pool area is shaded, kid-safe pool area, toddlers were catered for. Suitable for a few days, the park was well maintained.
Likes: Good camp kitchen and they were happy to move us to a site closer to the camp kitchen as we needed to make use of it. Had the fridge all to ourselves even on a long weekend/school holidays.
Dislikes: Lack of hot water, only just enough showers in main ablution block at peak times.
Added Touches: They did have a free pancake brunch on one day.
Local Information: Close to town, nice walk down to jetty and back.

Very crowded as befits the season - but very densely packed and horribly noisy. Kept awake both nights by neighbours playing loud poker, and one night by kids playing music until 3am, out of control of parents. Reaction of staff was that we should have awakened them for help (as English visitors didn't know we could do this), no apology or promise of action. For deaf fishermen only, I fear. Unfriendly staff, bad staff response to complaints, staff offered tourist advice. Price was as expected, poor value for money ($28 2A per night unpowered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to only some sites, cleanliness was average, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, small sites. Good laundry, good camp kitchen, secure entry. Noisy, claustrophobic park, not enough shade. Dismal bbq area atmosphere. Dirty pool is shaded, kid-safe pool area. Suitable for overnighter.
Dislikes: Noisy and rough atmosphere.

Port Germein Progress Association Caravan Park, Port Germein
Also known as Port Germein Caravan Park. Port Germein is a small township on the Princes Highway approximately 22 km north of Port Pirie. The park is situated on the east side of the road overlooking Spencer Gulf. There is a jetty just a short walk from the park and BBQs in the beach reserve opposite the park. Ph: 08 8634 5266. On beachfront of Port Germein, opposite jetty and by police station. Pets at manager's discretion, and under close supervision.

Manager's name is Norm Colquist. A Council owned park. I stayed here some years ago and thought it was good then, now it's excellent. The best amenities block for a park of this size. The manager has put a lot of work into making this a great small park. No slabs, or lawn - but in desert country this is to be expected Very friendly staff, no complaints, van parking assistance provided by staff, staff helped us at the site, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was lower than expected, very good value for money ($17 2A per night, powered, off-peak season). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is very good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, dry change area, paper towels/dryer provided. Adequate number of tourist sites, all level sites, good night lighting, large sites, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by, good camp kitchen. Peaceful, open and roomy, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere, no permanents. Clean UC gas bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. Suitable for a week or more, suitable for families, well maintained park, park is considered kid-safe.
Likes: Only 32 powered sites makes this a small park. Extra effort by the manager shows. Low cost.
Dislikes: No sullage.

Two night stay over New Year. Manager Norm could not have been more helpful and runs a tight ship. Riot outside in Port Germein but trouble inside instantly sat on by throwing out hooning teenagers. Other stayers very friendly. New amenity block just opened. Very friendly staff, good staff response to complaints, staff offered tourist advice, staff helped us at the site, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, good value for money ($16 2A per night unpowered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to all sites, were clean, condition is very good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, exhaust fans/good ventilation. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, average sized sites. Good laundry, no rec room, late checkout allowed (up to noon). Quiet, open & roomy park, not enough shade, family/friendly atmosphere. No bbqs, no playground, no pool. Suitable for few days, well maintained park.
Likes: Friendliness and location.
Dislikes: Camp kitchen is definitely next on list for work. Fish bait storage also needs management.

Manager's name is Norm Colquist. Under new management - 3 weeks. Indoor TV aerial ok. Very friendly staff, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, good value for money ($20 2A per night powered or unpowered site is $14 per night). Friendly staff, van parking assistance provided by staff, staff helped us at the site. Price was higher than expected, poor value for money ($20.00 2A per night powered). Inadequate number of amenities, are close to only some sites, cleanliness was average, condition is poor, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, paper towels/dryer provided. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, small sites, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by. Basic laundry, no rec room, late checkout allowed (up to noon), good camp kitchen. Quiet, claustrophobic park, not enough shade. Dogs on leash. Clean UC bbq, congenial bbq area atmosphere. No playground, no pool. Suitable for overnighter.
Dislikes: While extra cabins and more sites have been added, the amenities block is a disgrace - 1 light for 3 toilets and 3 showers, when the shower doors are closed its completely dark, suggest you bring your own light, another block is needed, the present ones are old, dismal and stink.
Added Touches: Crab cooking facilities right next to bbq. Great if you like crabs, horrible smell if you don't, it should be located away from sites.
Local Information: Longest wooden jetty in Australia.
Roads: Not bad.

This is a perfect example of managers of a park that should not be in this industry. Upon arrival you are read the riot act and are given the impression that you are a burden on the park. There are more rules and signs stating them than any other park we have stayed in. One of the most stupid being that you cannot remove unattended washing when it has finished out of washing machines and put it in the peoples basket - main reason this was in place as the park used most of the washing machines and left the washing in there when it was finished for hours so you couldn't effectively use the washing machines. Very unfriendly staff. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($40.50 A3 2C per night, powered, off-peak season). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to only some sites, were clean, condition is very good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, dry change area, exhaust fans/good ventilation. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, large sites, no sites with concrete annex slabs, very few sites are shaded, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Good laundry, no rec room, kiosk, secure entry. Peaceful, claustrophobic park, not enough shade, a few permanents. Clean gas bbq (pay), dismal bbq area atmosphere. No playground, no pool. Stayed 3 days, $23.00 per night powered site member discount. Entry is via security boom gate. Reception was fairly friendly and we were shown on a park map where our site was. Our site was a drive through, reasonably level gravel site with some shade. There are two areas to this park and each has their own amenities block. The amenities were clean, as was the laundry with 2 washing machines and a dryer. There seemed to be lots of rules, with signs everywhere. Cabins were situated around the perimeter. There was no swimming pool or playground. But it was a quiet clean park and suited us. Unfortunately, on our last day and night we had an almighty downpour (approx 40 mls) so our site turned very muddy. Suitable for a few days or longer and we would return again.

A small and rather pleasant park with a large number of permanent sites, but tourist sites are generally in an area of their own, some of them on water's edge. Very cordial reception from new managers, shown to site. Sites reasonable size, generally shaded, gravel surface with concrete pads, well maintained and kept tidy. Good water and sullage to all sites. Amenities central to park, very well maintained and clean, good hot water, soap and hand drying provided, showers had reasonably sized changing areas, good hot water pressure. Creek is dammed to make a (public) swimming area, which is not fenced off so care would need to be taken with young children. Large council playground nearby outside park. Good for overnight or slightly longer stay. Price of $23 2A for powered site considered reasonable value.

After an enjoyable time travelling through Burra to Port Augusta, Port Lincoln then across to the Flinders Ranges we decided to stop a Quorn Caravan Park as we had passed through the town many times when we lived in South Australia. We found Bronwyn and Gary very welcoming and we liked the set out of the park. The amenities were clean and we would definitely stay there again on any other travels.
While staying at the park I lost a treasured gold chain and jewelled cross. If the person who found it could please post it back to me no questions asked I would really appreciate it.

Manager's name is Bronwyn & Gary Lucas. Van parking assistance and helping at site were offered. Worth considering for short or medium stopover, 1-7 nights for regional attractions. We stayed in 4 different parks in arid lands and only Quorn and Rawnsley Park were acceptable. Rawnsley is bigger/more remote/more expensive but good for position of Wilpena Pound. Quorn is very well placed with lots of historic things to view and not too commercialised. Very clean, neat and a pleasure to stay here. Shower facilities in peak times may involve a short wait but patrons are kindly advised to only have 3 minute showers. This is completely adequate and also in line with water reductions in this arid area. Likes: Very environmentally conscious. Rubbish bins cleared daily and recycling encouraged. Extra provisions (i.e. soap powder, pegs, laundry baskets, magazines in laundry, liquid soap in toilets). Very friendly and helpful owners and involved with wider community (lots of local knowledge) who obviously enjoy their caravan park! No traffic noise (away from main roads). Lots of bird life and kangaroo sanctuary.
Dislikes: Small grassed areas would be nice (using grey water from laundry??)
Added Touches: Great campfire facilities allowed during off fire season.
Local Information: Great meals (and pizzas) at Austral Hotel. Close to Flinders Ranges which has extensive bushwalking and 4WD tracks/tours available. Horseshoe Rim Tour excellent (Carn family proprietors). Pichi Richi Train is a step into a bygone era.

We have 50 powered sites, many more unpowered, 6 women's showers, 4 men's showers, a babies' bathroom, and disabled bathroom. We now have instantaneous hot water systems, so that we do not run out of hot water at all. Although we could do with more shade in some areas, we have planted over 400 local native plants - many more to go. Arboreal experts advise not to cut out dead wood, as the chance of live limbs dropping increases. We provide guests with alternatives on where to park, so no-one need ever park under Red Gums.

Myall Grove Caravan Cark, Roxby Downs
Coming from Woomera road entrance - just after 50 kph sign is first main side road on the right heading into town centre. Caravan park is right on corner, entrance a few hundred metres up that main side road. Ph: 08 8671 1991.
Roxby downs is booming - Olympic Dam mine (12km away) is expanding, houses being transported in on the back of trucks almost on a daily basis so it is not surprising that this caravan park is more of a "cabin park" and it is full of permanents. It was sold for an unbelievably high sum in November 2007, so there are new owners on board now. It is nigh impossible to get a cabin here unless you book months in advance but, there are almost always overnight spots available for tourists (might want to book in advance to be certain). It is an extremely busy park and gets rowdy and noisy at times because of many permanent residents, the very transient population plus the round the clock shift workers/contractors coming & going. There are about 4-6 powered sites not too far from the entrance set aside for overnighters which are not drive through (a little hard to negotiate actually) and there is no shade at all (be wary in summer). The facilities are otherwise great, the nearby amenities, laundry, BBQ areas, very kid safe playground etc are all well maintained (although can be dirty from other people showering) and bins are emptied 2-3 times per week (another legacy of very used park). BBQs were not fully cleaned though. There is no rec room or camp kitchen that we were advised of, and didn't go looking for them as a result. All the 4-6 sites are gravel and level. The reception stocks milk, ice creams and soft drink but nothing else. In spite of it being a busy park, managers always cheerful and helpful and provide a map of park, drawing your route so you can negotiate the labyrinth. It's a park that has all the needed facilities, but just not the atmosphere, it is very claustrophobic because you are surrounded by fences of permanent residents and cabins, i.e. there is no view. Found it a bit noisy and managers advised could do nothing really about it, so really only suitable for an overnighter or two as you explore the town and nearby mining region. Not the type of park you would stay too long at or go to have a peaceful stay. Friendly staff, average staff response to complaints, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was higher than expected, reasonable value for money ($34 2A 2C per night powered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, paper towels/dryer provided. Inadequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, small sites, hard to negotiate into site, adequate taps close by. Good laundry, no rec room, dump point. Noisy, claustrophobic park, not enough shade. Dirty UC gas bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. Good playground in average condition. No pool. Suitable for overnighter, well maintained park, park is considered kid-safe.
Likes: Not much really - don't mean to be harsh, but given that it caters more for permanents and the mining boom that is to be expected. It is quite close to the town centre, within a 5-10 minute walk and it still is okay for an overnighter - it does have good facilities.
Dislikes: A bit on the noisy side, lots of comings and goings and the park is catering for permanents which means lots and lots of cabins making it feel fairly claustrophobic. Only a few sites have been set aside for overnight stays and they are a bit hard to negotiate.
Parking: Small recessed signposted area just as you drive into entrance, outside reception.
Local Information: Roxby is a good place to visit to say you have been there! Meals at the tavern are good, but avoid going there around 7pm as it gets very busy. Andamooka is 30km away and Woomera 80km away (perhaps alternate places to stay if a highly used park with lots of permanents puts you off), both towns that also need a visit. Has only one major shopping area in middle of town centre - Woolworths which is always crowded. Worth driving out towards Olympic Dam (12km) just to have a look at what's out there (you can't see the mine since it is restricted access). Andamooka is definitely a place to visit just to say you have been there too! There's a nice Chinese restaurant and also a fish/chips (with great pizzas) takeaway in town centre. Other than Subway there are no fast food outlets, and there are only a couple of fuel stations. There is a second caravan park but understand that caters only for permanents.
Roads: Road from Woomera to Roxby-Olympic Dam and Andamooka is all bitumen. If you want to stay on bitumen roads you need to double back, as roads beyond Roxby to William Creek are 4WD only. Be wary of emus and wedge tailed eagles slow to get off the road feasting on road kill.

In spite of name, very dry and gravel/dirt type of caravan park with a very small grassed area for a few tents. 45 powered sites and as many unpowered sites, many of which are in bush camp settings in surrounding Stony Creek, quite nice scrubby area adjacent to main part of park. As it is located on edge of township, long walk into town, but lovely rolling hills and paddock view of southern Flinders opposite - feels like you are in country. Reception is as you drive in and only stocks a few drinks & lollies - hosts were friendly enough. Lots of campfire spots, very peaceful park except for noisy corellas in trees across the road at dawn/dusk. No fence behind cabin area to main road so keep eye on kids although side road has high fenced perimeter. Friends stayed in cabin while we were there, were given linen as paid for, but had to make own bed, lots of overused and non working items like doors and blinds in cabin, no tea/coffee, no freezer, barely serviceable fridge but lovely wood fire and small picnic tables found behind cabins. 4x onsite vans available too. Had two cages to keep dogs if you wanted to leave them for a day (unsure $cost). Stayed four nights. Highlight of stay was hand feeding possums each night (Managers hosted feeding or can find possums yourself), they are very tame and also two kangaroos came to edge of park near creek bed. Given Wilmington is a bit of a junction point for travellers the park is busy late afternoon and early morning with overnighters. Good base for exploring region as lots of interesting little places to visit, and yes would stay here again. Average staff friendliness, average staff response to complaints, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was lower than expected, very good value for money ($27 2A 2C per night powered). 2x older style brick amenities, which were clean, serviceable, and we had no complaints about. Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to all sites, were clean, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, paper towels/dryer provided. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by. Good laundry, dump point. A good sized rec room with TV, table tennis, pool table and lounges but min $1 per person fee to hire any equipment. Small camp kitchen which only had a fridge and seats (no toaster, kettle etc when we were there) and 2 burner BBQ and required a min $1 fee to use any of the camp kitchen facilities so we declined - also another BBQ undercover seating area near back of park - presumably involves similar cost. Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere, no permanents. Clean UC gas bbq ($1), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. Decent sized clean saltwater pool which is open to the sun, but edges were rusty and jagged, posing arguable safety hazard while we were there and you had to remove/replace pool cover yourself. Kid-safe pool area, tables and chairs provided. A spa was there but covered and not allowed to be used. A really nice little playground in good condition in centre with sandpit and adjacent is a fenced area housing a pony which we took delight in patting and fed some apples to at night. Sign said pony cart rides available, but not while we were there (we were there off-peak). Suitable for few days, well maintained park.
Likes: Views of the nearby hills surrounding Wilmington. Very peaceful atmosphere in park while we were there. On edge of town so feels like you are in country. Lots of trees and shade. Nice playground, large rec room, pool, pony and bush camping area. Feeding the possums at night and managers hosting this for the kids. Liked the idea of housing your dog in a pen while you go out for the day.
Dislikes: While may be more liked by others (given it's a user pays format), as we are regular users of camp kitchens and facilities, didn't like having to pay extra $$ for their use especially when had to bring own toaster, kettle over etc - even though price of sites very reasonable.
Added Touches: Possum feeding at night, nice playground, pony in centre pen and presumably pony cart rides at other times of the year. Reasonable sized cage to keep your dog in so you can go out for the day (not sure of cost and it wasn't used while we were there).
Local Information: Nice little town with museums and other things to look at so worth stopping by and walking the main street (toy museum is interesting to have a look at even though a little run down and just shows off collections - but definitely worth the $2 entry to have a look and reminisce!). There is a lookout you can walk to from caravan park (2km) overseeing town, gravel road opposite park (initially bitumen) leads 11km into Alligator Gorge National Park area where there are some good walks and can park near lookouts (NB: $7.50 national park entrance fee) and early summer evening looks back over eastern plains with spectacular views, and plenty of kangaroos hopping about. With aid of map, can follow lots of dirt roads that lead out to small towns of yesteryear like Bruce and Hammond, follow scenic gravel road drive from Wilmington to Quorn, and can use as base to explore other towns like Orroroo, Melrose, Remarkable view wines, Quorn etc. Wilmington is situated at the exit of Horrocks Pass - definitely worth the 15-minute drive into the pass and up signposted Hancock's lookout, which gives views of upper Spencer Gulf (best views mid to late morning). Only "trap for new visitors" is to check opening times of IGA store and fuel outlets as they were closed Sundays and Saturdays while we were there (and had to drive 30 km to next fuel).
Roads: Wilmington is a bit of a junction point for those travelling to/from NSW, QLD, NT, WA and passing through SA as it seems to be one of those places you need to go through to go on yonder - so all main roads are bitumen. Horrocks Pass (west) takes you to Port Augusta to access NT & WA, Orroroo (east) road takes you out towards Broken Hill to access NSW and SE QLD, Melrose (south) etc takes you to Adelaide, and Quorn (north) takes you up past Flinders to NT & QLD through Birdsville etc. Lots of 2WD dirt roads coming off main road to explore surrounding areas.

Rawnsley Park Station, Wilpena Pound
21 klm south of Wilpena Pound, Flinders Ranges National Park, off the Hakwer/Wilpena Road on 4 km of good gravel road. The caravan park/camping area/store is 1 km beyond the homestead/restaurant/main cabin area. Ph: 08 8648 0008. Top Tourist Park. Dogs on leash.
This is an outback caravan park, most sites well spaced out. Excellent reception and management, who were very helpful. Huge area for unpowered sites. Excellent indoor kitchen and social hall. One comparatively newer amenities block and one very old tin shed amenities. Grounds and amenities were spotless. Drinking water was pretty good for bore water. Lots of walks onsite. Cost was $26 after Top Tourist discount. Easy drive to Wilpena Pound, Flinders Ranges National Park not far past Rawnsley Station. Would be good for a week or more. Could be dusty in some seasons, but this should be expected. Some powered sites are tiered. Lots of fireplaces among sites and camp fires were enjoyed by most guests, bring your own wood or purchase bags at shop. Good for a week or more.

Manager's name is Tony Smith. This park has a great feel - situated on a hillside looking across to Wilpena pound. We had a fire-ring adjacent to our site and cooked some great camp oven meals there. Spacious park so didn't feel cramped at all. Lovely walk up nearby hill with views the valley. Friendly staff, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, very good value for money ($36 2A 2C per night, unpowered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to only some sites, were clean, condition is good, there was adequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, large sites, shade to some sites. Good rec room, good camp kitchen. Peaceful, open & roomy park, family/friendly atmosphere. Suitable for a week or more, suitable for families, well maintained park.
Likes: Spectacular view from park across to Wilpena Bluff, fire-ring adjacent to site for campfires and cooking.
Added Touches: Warm modern rec room / camp kitchen with lots of room for groups to sit and chat / play games / read etc
Local Information: Drive through Bunyeroo and Brachina gorges stunning. Fine for 2WD unless it has been raining. Ended up at Parachilna Pub for interesting lunch (including the Road Kill Grill)
Roads: Roads to park entrance sealed, then graded dirt road in.
Date 07/2009. Park Rating 4: Would love to return and stay longer.

Good park with friendly and helpful staff, management responsive to comments. Good value for money. Average amenities. Good gravel sites, sites were level, large sites, drive-through sites were available, adequate taps close by Good camp kitchen, kiosk, dump point. All types of fuel available (unleaded petrol was 2c/L cheaper than Hawker). Fires allowed dependent upon any general fire bans. Good atmosphere to park, quiet, open and roomy park. Suitable for a week or more, the park was well maintained.
Local Information: Flight over Flinders Ranges is a "must do". Bookings can be made at park.
Roads: Last 3km is reasonable condition gravel, otherwise all bitumen. Be very aware of stock and wildlife on all roads north of Pt Augusta.
Date 04/2008. Park Rating 4: Would stay again.

Manager's name is Bev & Gordon Dahlitz. Report covers June 2007 and January 2008 stays. Fantastic scenery, great base to explore Flinders Ranges. Gravel and dirt sites, a small section of lawn but was not able to be used while we were there. Friendly and helpful staff. Handy kiosk with internet facilities, some groceries, tourist information, beer/wine and diesel/unleaded fuel. Car wash facilities but no sullage, very basic "Hills" playground equipment. Can also use kiosk to book and secure keys for self drive 4WD, scenic flights, horse riding etc. Swimming pool was a very welcome relief in hot 40C+ January spell (but overcrowded as a result) while plenty of designated campfire with BBQ plate beside every 2 sites on average and ability to purchase wood ($10 bag) was fantastic in 12C June cold spell. Undercover seating beside pool and kiosk. Separate undercover BBQ and seated areas, and a couple of amenities blocks, one being new brick and the other fibro (used both as my site was in between) - can be a bit of a walk and uphill depending on your site. During June hot water in main amenities was very poor as many others using shower at same time (but then used fibro block which was better as not as popular), but no problems in January. Plenty of great bush camping away from main part of caravan park, including small lake (plenty of water in June but almost empty in January) with Wilpena Pound as backdrop. Emus & roos often visit lake and sometimes park itself. Plenty of great family friendly bushwalking opportunities at Rawnsley Park, including straight from caravan park to nearby points of view/interest - free maps available. Excellent large camp kitchen with a number of tables and chairs, wood heater and TV. Had a free film night on Wilpena photography while we were there. A very relaxing park, great backdrop, most sites are level even though the caravan park is on side of hill above creek bed. Eco villas, cabins and dormitories are other accommodation of the station. Woolshed Restaurant back in main cabin section (about 1km back along dirt road) has some great meals although easy to spend $100 for family. Good family park, a bit noisy on one visit as groups had booked out a section. Also very noisy are Corella birds in trees depending on time of year. Short drive to lookout and parking bay for 5-hour walk up Rawnsley Bluff. Also can take 4WD around back of bush camping area. Dogs allowed on leash. Lighting very poor around most of caravan park (but fine in and around amenities and UC areas) but then that allows you to see billions of stars at night! HINT: Book ahead for Easter, June & October long weekends. Friendly staff, average staff response to complaints, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($32 2A 2C per night powered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to only some sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was inadequate hot water, soap provided, paper towels/dryer provided. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, small sites, average sized sites, concrete annex slabs, hard to negotiate into site, adequate taps close by. Good laundry, good rec room, good camp kitchen, kiosk, car wash, dump point. Quiet, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere, no permanents. Clean UC gas bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. Basic playground in average condition. Clean heated pool is open to sun, kid-safe pool area, tables and chairs provided. Suitable for few days, well maintained park, park is considered kid-safe.
Likes: The awesome backdrop of the Bluff and Pound, especially sunset colours in summer; so many activities on offer, plenty of bushwalks around camp without having to drive anywhere, access to all the great Flinders things, a real bush camping feel, access to restaurant and a well stock kiosk/fuel outlet. Fuel was either cheaper than Hawker and Wilpena or same price. Free maps for bushwalking, mountain bike riding and also a recommended self daytrip drive exploring Flinders.
Dislikes: A lot of dirt and gravel with sites. The real dislike was that all the activities (other than bushwalks) with 4WD trips, scenic flights, mountain bikes and horse riding cost lots of money and no discounts supplied for purchasing multiple activities. Disappointed that hiring mountain bikes for 2A 2C was over $100!!
Parking: Drive into the caravan park and follow the signposts to the kiosk. Park in the "waiting lane" on the right hand side and go into kiosk which doubles up as caravan park reception.
Added Touches: Purchase a National Parks Pass ($7.50) from kiosk and it is valid for whole stay (otherwise you pay per day entry from permit stations on side of highway or in national park itself); maps; firewood sold; excellent large camp kitchen; ability to organise and book many activities, including restaurant, at kiosk.
Local Information: What can you say, this is the Flinders - awesome scenery and drives around the place, need I say more. Rawnsley is a great base and has an awesome backdrop. Check out Pugilist Hill lookout about 10km east of Rawnsley park (follow signposted road on highway almost directly opposite Rawnsley park entrance). Plenty of parking bays; bring your camera! Must do the self drive Rawnsley recommend, except add in Aroona Valley (Hans Heysen country) after exiting Bunyeroo Valley drive as a 10 km detour and requires a waterlogged creek crossing. Bushwalk to Wangara lookout in Wilpena pound worthwhile (shortest walk with a decent view).
Roads: January 2007 floods washed out the road 5km from Hawker on road to Wilpena, and requires a carefully driven gravel signposted detour of approximately 500 m around and over the creek bed. New bridge being built, but detour still in place 01/2008. Road between Hawker and Wilpena is bitumen. All other main roads, including the 2km stretch into Rawnsley and roads beyond Wilpena to Blinman are 2WD dirt roads. All valley and gorge roads are 2WD but care is needed, and 4WD only at times depending on weather. Take care driving from Rawnsley to Wilpena as there are many kangaroo hazards.

Well signposted. Swimming pool not open. Average management, reception staff friendly and helpful. Very good value for money. Top Tourist members $23.40 per night. Good amenities, were clean, water pressure was okay, there was adequate hot water. One large, new amenities block, near shop/office, very clean, good hot water and pressure. Smaller, older amenities block closer to campsites. Would not cope in peak times. For about 25 powered sites both amenity blocks are a fair hike. Park has 50 powered sites, a few are lawn, most are dirt/gravel and fairly level (book ahead for these) there are numerous areas to bush-camp. Average sites, adequate taps close by. Lighting is sparse. Areas provided at most sites for campfires. Laundry, rec room, good camp kitchen, kiosk, dump point. Good atmosphere to park, open and roomy park. Clean UC bbq, lit at night, with seating provided. Suitable for a week or more, the park was well maintained.
Added Touches: Park provides excellent map for a self drive day tour of area with 10 recommended stop off points.
Local Information: Lunch at Parachilna pub is a must! Wilpena Pound 20 kms north of park, great walking treks and views of pound. We went 200 kms north via Copley (Quandong Bakery has best pasties), Leigh Creek (see the coalfields) to Lyndhurst, a visit to Talc Alf is an experience not to be missed. We went south to Quorn and rode on the Pichi Richi Steam Train.

51 km north of Hawker, Flinders Ranges National Park. The Resort offers different types of accommodation, including a caravan and camping area. Ph: 08 8648 0048 or 1800 805 802. No pets allowed.
Average staff friendliness, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was higher than expected, reasonable value for money ($29.50 2A per night, powered, shoulder season). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to only some sites, were clean, condition is reasonable, water pressure is bad, there was adequate hot water, soap provided. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, large sites, no sites with concrete annex slabs, shade to most sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Poor laundry, late checkout allowed (up to noon), kiosk. Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere, no permanents. Gas bbq ($1), dismal bbq area atmosphere. Clean pool is open to the sun, tables and chairs provided. Suitable for few days, suitable for families, park is considered kid-safe.
Likes: Lovely, well treed, peaceful park in magnificent setting. Friendly local wildlife.
Dislikes: Many powered sites were miles from the facilities, and you needed a good torch as the only lighting was at the facility block. Only 3 washing machines (1 out of order) and 4 clothes lines in entire park, and one was attached to dodgy water supply that stained clothes. BBQs were tiny and miles from powered area. No shower curtains.
Parking: Park at visitor information to check in.
Roads: Road north to Blinman is now sealed for more than half way, road works due for completion mid 2010.

Basic Park with basic facilities but all functioned and did the job to let us enjoy the pound. Friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($28 2A per night, powered, off-peak season). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to only some sites, cleanliness was average, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, large sites, no sites with concrete annex slabs, shade to most sites, drive-through sites. Peaceful, open & roomy park. Suitable for few days.
Likes: Let park tenants use the pool at the motel - hot weather meant this was very welcome
Dislikes: Very basic facilities
Local Information: Absolutely gorgeous spot (the pound - not the park). Huge mountains and lovely scenery. Rained heavily while we were there - biggest fall in SA in 2 years, so we left in a hurry walking across the road covered with water to make sure safe. Very enjoyable.

Access both from Orroroo and from Hawker are both sealed roads all the way now. Once at Wilpena, the caravan park is part of the overall resort complex. Pull in at Visitor Centre to check in. Set in a sublime location, we stayed at one of only 30 powered sites. Plenty of unpowered, but if you want a powered site booking is essential. Some sites big, but some are squeezy. Amenities clean and functional but would be stressed in peak times. A country mile to the amenities in some cases. This park is centrally located to see the southern part of the ranges. You can book online but allow plenty of time because they respond with postal mail.

Lovely bush sites with plenty of room. Fires allowed sometimes according to weather conditions. It pays to book if you want a powered site. Average management. Reasonable value for money, $28 2A per night. Poor amenities, were clean, water pressure was okay, there was adequate hot water. Good sites, sites were level, the site size was okay, hard to negotiate in to/out of site, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Good atmosphere to park, quiet, shady park. Suitable for a week or more, the park was well maintained.
Likes: Lovely outlook. Beautiful, bushy sites with quite a lot of privacy. Lots of wildlife but you have to be wary of marauding crows and kangaroos if items are left outside. We even had a very small bat sneak inside the van one night and take up position in the curtains.
Dislikes: Very easy to lose your bearings at night time going to and from the ablution block. The ablutions are a long way from some sites.
Added Touches: Firewood is sold at the office. Timber can't be gathered in the park.
Local Information: Lots of bushwalks, some very taxing. Very spectacular scenery. Spend a day doing the 4WD loop. Make sure you fill in the walks book near reception. There were 2 helicopter rescues on consecutive days when we were there - one hiker with a broken leg. Mawson Track is great for bicycles but the signage leaves a bit to be desired.
Roads: They say the "loop" to the gorges can be done with conventional vehicles but there were sections I think would be taxing for those types of car.

A slightly upmarket bush camp. About 30 sites have power and water, then there is a huge area for bush camping. Amenities are a good walk from most sites. They are clean, showers are hot and all well maintained. The area is very pretty, lots of trees and kangaroos. The walk into the Pound is quite easy and many longer walks are available. Use of resort pool and other facilities is allowed. There is a shop, information centre and restaurants.
Likes: Open fires allowed - firewood for sale. The "tag-a-long" tour to Arkaba Station - spectacular.
Local Information: Visit as many of the gorges as time allowed, aboriginal sites.
Date 08/2006. Campground Rating 3.5: Stock up at Port Augusta and stay awhile.

Nice outlook. Large park in 2 sections. Well set out bathroom, neat and clean, outback look building with open eaves. Washing machine was on veranda. Had to queue for showers and to use washing machine. Barbecue areas with sink and seating under cover and well lit - signed for use of coaches but used by campers. Campers can access recreation facilities at accommodation area. Most campers lit camp fires. Need to pay park entrance $7 (or park pass) as well as camp fee. Worth visiting for scenic walks and climbs. Friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($18 2A unpowered). Inadequate number of amenities, are close to only some sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, some level sites, poor night lighting, average sized sites, drive-through sites. Basic laundry, no rec room. Quiet, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, no permanents.
Likes: Campers could spread out amongst trees over a large area.
Dislikes: Had to queue for showers, and one day had a long wait with many others in the queue when bathroom cleaning ran late.
Parking: Due to large numbers of day visitors to park centre, finding space to park with a caravan near centre to book in was difficult. Large rig park was further away.
Local Information: Walk trails and climbs well signed. Flights over Wilpena Pound comparatively cheap and popular.
Roads: Suitable for 2WD.

Old Pimba Road. Only one entrance into town, very easy to find, first street on left. Ph: 08 8673 7800. Pets at manager's discretion.
$25 per night. At entrance to town and sign posted. Mainly drive through sites. Toilet block is demountable cabin – not enough cubicles to cope with busy periods. Limited facilities but adequate for overnight. Very friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was lower than expected, good value for money ($21.50 A3 2C per night, powered, off-peak season). Inadequate number of amenities, are close to only some sites, cleanliness was average, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, dry change area, exhaust fans/good ventilation. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, average sized sites, no sites with concrete annex slabs, no sites are shaded, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Basic laundry, no rec room, good camp kitchen. Peaceful, open & roomy park, not enough shade, family/friendly atmosphere. No bbqs, no playground, no pool. Suitable for few days.
Likes: Great little bar with very well priced drinks and friendly staff. We weren't expecting much of the park so was better than expected.
Dislikes: Bit run down as new owners are about to renovate to accommodate for 250 BHP workers so if this happens it should be a lot better.

Stayed 3 nights, powered site $25.00 per night. A bit steep for what was provided. Average friendliness from staff. We were allocated site number 20, a level gravel drive-through site. We had stayed here previously in April 2007 and have found that not much has changed. Amenities sheds have not changed except perhaps are more shabbier and really need replacing. Average cleanliness but this is not the fault of the cleaner – how can you make something look bright sparkling clean when it is old, worn out and falling to bits. The bbq's cleanliness was poor in a dismal undercover bbq area. The camp kitchen was dark, dismal and uninviting. Poor run-down laundry. The only thing that had changed in this park was that a few more trees had died and some paving had been laid to one toilet shed. We stayed three nights because we had pre-booked the Olympic Dam tour. On arrival for the tour we were told that the guide was sick and it would not happen. We were shown a very good video but were very disappointed that we had missed the tour. Otherwise we would have only stayed here one night. The best part of this park is the bar, but it was only open on one night while we were there. Pity about the rubbish behind the bar but fronting the entrance. According to Jennifer, Shane is to turn this park into a 4 star resort by next year. The park was nearly full on two nights and was completely full on the third night with vans and campers/tents parked everywhere with power cables running from the toilets, camp kitchen and bbq area to accommodate everyone. So obviously there is a demand for sites in this park and an upgrade would bring in more happier people. This is a peaceful roomy park, with clean parking sites and water and sullage provided. Unfortunately the ablutions blocks let this park down. Suitable for overnighter or a few days.

Manager's name is Shane. We stayed in cabin and friends had caravan. Cabin was old Jayco, quite used, very dusty (even though were told had been stayed in the night before), pots and pans unusable (grotty and burnt bottoms), no toaster. Mismatch of cutlery, obviously missing some, spider webs in bathroom. Not provided full linen we paid for - however, all was taken care of quickly and managers otherwise very friendly. Would not stay in cabin again. There were also some ground floor motel style rooms in old singles quarters (we've been told a bit tired also). Onto caravan sites - about 30 powered, a few more unpowered. All gravel, drive thru and on a slight horizontal slope. Some taps near by, plenty of toilet blocks (at least 3) in such a small park. Two amenities in ATCO hut style in middle area of park, one a bit better than the other, and the third is part of accommodation in the old two storey quarters. Amenities blocks were clean, but only reasonably so. Camp kitchen was awful, everything looked old and too used and felt like being in my grandfather's shed. The BBQ was disgusting, on top of which you must pay a minimum of $1 to use (your first $1 spent just cleaning it). Tables and chairs in this area were also beyond use by date (drive a few hundred metres into Woomera and find Breen Park - free grassy picnic, bird aviaries and BBQ area). In utter contrast is the bar. Shane has converted an ATCO hut into a bar where you can buy (good prices) a few common types of alcohol/soft drinks, fenced off an area with slate flooring, lovely outdoor setting - a fantastic place for tourists to get together and just have a chat. Something very unique and what a wonderful idea - easily the best aspect of the park. Pity rest of the park was not up to this standard. Suitable for a couple of nights with basic facilities to explore region as it is a nice small quiet park but not really one to spend time in during the day (no playground, pool etc). note: price below is for cabin. Friendly staff, good staff response to complaints, van parking assistance provided by staff, staff helped us at the site. Price was lower than expected, good value for money ($83 2A 2C per night). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to all sites, cleanliness was average, condition is reasonable. Adequate number of tourist sites, some level sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by. No rec room. Peaceful, open & roomy park, not enough shade, family/friendly atmosphere. No playground, no pool. Suitable for overnighter.
Likes: The Bar, friendly staff but not much else.
Dislikes: A lazy feel to cleanliness of the cabins, dirty BBQ area & camp kitchen. Nothing to do in the park itself other than park your van and go and explore elsewhere. A little noisy at times with road trains travelling to/from Roxby going up the sloping highway about 100 m from park 24 hours.
Parking: Drive into park and look for the large office sign and park close by.
Added Touches: The Bar and the fantastic opportunity to talk "bulldust" - meet other travellers.
Local Information: Woomera located 6km off Stuart Highway. A nice quiet town that still has BAe systems, BHP employees etc there and definitely worth a few hours to spend looking around. We had tea at the modern Eldo Hotel (hard to find but worth it) which was very yummy. The missile and aircraft display park in centre of town is main attraction, as well as the museum ($7 for 2A and 2C under 14) located adjacent which provides a lot of history about the town, models and artefacts. Visitor centre worth a visit which also includes a 10-pin bowling alley (open 10am-2pm) and diner with nice basic hot foods. IGA nearby and a tower that can be climbed outside visitors centre and a nice undercover playground opposite. There's an observatory which is open nightly - book ahead, small donation - but had a special free night we were there - fantastic! Highlight for me though is Breen Park located on northern edge of town - an oasis in the desert! Grassy lawns, at least 7 free BBQs with plenty of picnic benches, small playground and bird aviaries around perimeter. A BBQ tea at sunset by ourselves with adequate lighting was very special. Pimba located on Stuart Hwy 6 km away is really only a roadhouse but is also only fuel outlet in area and has Spuds takeaway. Didn't eat there but believe a nice friendly place travellers frequent, and a significant meal purchase enables 5c? discount on fuel.
Roads: Very good - highway and bitumen all the way - including to Roxby and Andamooka.

Manager's name is John Rasnacs. Very basic. Gravel sites. Jammed into 'nose to tail sites'. Work camp type buildings. No fuel available in town. Average staff friendliness, average staff response to complaints, staff offered tourist advice, van parking assistance provided by staff, staff helped us at the site, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was higher than expected, poor value for money ($24 2A per night powered). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to all sites, cleanliness was average, condition is reasonable. Adequate number of tourist sites, all level sites, poor night lighting, small sites, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Poor laundry. Peaceful, claustrophobic park, not enough shade. Dirty UC electric bbq ($1), dismal bbq area atmosphere. No playground, no pool. Suitable for overnighter, well maintained park.
Likes: New beer garden & bar area.
Dislikes: Only minimal toilets/showers 3 in one building; only 2 toilets in the other. No toilet paper in some. Looks like a couple of work-camp toilets buildings were purchased. Large number of motel units is part of complex.
Local Information: A number of tourist attractions within the town. Plenty of town facilities except a fuel depot.
Roads: Good roads

Stayed 2 days, $24.00 powered site (a bit steep). Friendly greeting by John who showed us to our site (No. 20) which was a drive through site. Site was level gravel with both power and good water. Little shade as trees were struggling. One permanent amenities block in the main building (refurbished as a backpackers area) and 2 cabin-type amenities buildings which were basic but clean. The laundry in the main building had 2 washing machines and dryers with good water pressure. When we drove into the park we saw a small tin cabin with "BAR" written on it in big letters. It wasn't till later in the evening, when we decided to check out this bar, that we saw what a great set-up this was. The "tin cabin" was in fact a beautifully appointed bar, (wow factor) with a raised outside slate floor alfresco area. Round tables with umbrellas were set up. Before long we had about 20 people enjoying a drink with us and all sat in a round circle comparing touring routes, and caravan parks. We all agreed that the bar area was wonderful and the park was great for a day or two. What a great evening. We did the same again the following night. Even though there were fewer people, the ambience was just as good. Drinks prices were reasonable. From the bar area we noted a green grass area with tents set up. Grass was being coaxed to grow in another tent area. To the left there was an undercover bbq area and further on a very small, old but clean camp kitchen. You cannot see any of this from the entry area and we would have missed it, had we not gone to the bar. John said he was keeping it a strictly tourist park with no permanents. He suggested that we also visit Roxby Downs and Andanooka, which we did. Roxby Downs is a very impressive mining town, worth the visit, and Andanooka (fully tar road) is a basically untidy opal mining town worth a visit. If we ever travel through the centre again, we would definitely make a stop for a day or two at Woomera Travellers Village.

Off Stuart Highway. Gravel park, drive through sites, open to elements and very windy. Facilities adequate. Shower curtains were in need of a good scrub or probably replacing. Transit stop only. BBQ area and camp kitchen very run down and unused.

Yunta Caravan Park, Yunta
UPDATED REPORT NEEDED

Barely rates as a park, more a camping ground. 8 powered sites tucked in against fence with the main Barrier Highway 40 metres away and the main truck refuelling pump between the vans & the road. Hot showers available & normal roadhouse fare which it is a part of. However it is there if you need it and quite usable, just down the road Adelaide side there is a free camp area with toilets & cold showers, another alternative probably a better one unless you need power. Would stay again if necessary.
