The Gorge Camping Reserve, Aratula
Turn off the Cunningham Highway at the Aratula Hotel Motel onto Charlwood Road. Continue on Charlwood Road for 2.5 kms and turn right onto Gorge Road. After 600m, the road seems to fork, take the right fork (the left one goes to the house on the left). Another 300 m thru a bush track (suitable for caravans) and you'll come to a gate. Enter, and close the gate. The house ahead is where the lady lives that runs the place. Ph: 07 5526 0683.
Unpowered camping only, at $3 per person. No town water, tank water only. Basic cold showers - fill the bucket, pull the handle, got a shower. Basic flush toilets. Reynolds Creek runs beside, supposedly suitable for swimming, but looked brackish when we were there due to drought, but evidently better swimming was up the road a bit. Fireplaces with tables. This is basic camping. Fireflys at night made it a bit magical. Very quiet. Ok for a day or two to explore the area. We used it as an overnight stop on the way to Brisbane.
Date 12/2008. Campground Rating 2: Perfect for an overnight, cheap stop.

Augathella Motel & Caravan Park, Augathella
Matilda Highway behind BP roadhouse. Ph: 07 4654 5353. Pets at manager's discretion.
Friendly staff, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($18.00 2A per night powered). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to all sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, dry change area. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly unlevel sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Basic laundry, no rec room. Quiet, open & roomy park, not enough shade, no permanents. No bbqs, no playground, no pool. Suitable for overnighter.
Likes: Cheap and handy.
Dislikes: Dusty gravel sites.
Parking: Check-in at BP while parking at entrance to motel 100 m away.
Roads: good.

Beaudesert Caravan & Tourist Park, Beaudesert
From Gold Coast, on left side of the road in front of the showgrounds just before town. This park was full of permanents with little space for tourists; sites were on a slope and unlevel, water pressure was low, amenities were old and not very clean, our site was a "drive through", which meant drive through the gate to the showgrounds, but a car had parked in front of the gate which made exiting very difficult. The park manager was trying to find the car owner with no success, so we had to drive over shrubs to get out. Would not stay here again.

Bunya View Caravan Park, Bell
Also known as Bells 'n' Whistles Accommodation Park. 47 kilometres North of Dalby. Located on Bunya Highway between Dalby and Kingaroy. On the left coming into town from south. Ph: 07 4663 1265. Pets at manager's discretion.
This is an old park that would be okay to overnight for about $16/$17 per night, but at the cost of $20 per night, it is below par. It is very clean, but that does not make up for the tired old amenities, and the lack of shelving in showers etc. Lights are on a timer so you have to be quick otherwise you could be soaped up and left in the dark. It is definitely not worth $20 per night. It is also very noisy being adjacent to the highway. Friendly management. Poor value for money. Average amenities, adequate number to cater for tourists, close to sites, were clean, there was adequate hot water. Average sites, drive-through sites were available, poor water quality, adequate sullage close by. Laundry, van parking by management. Park atmosphere was okay, open and roomy park. UC bbq (free), lit at night. Suitable for overnighter.
Dislikes: Overpriced at $20 per night

Small park. Sites are large with a bit of slope. Most are grass. A couple have slabs but slabs are in poor condition. Amenities are adequate. They are old but kept in immaculate condition. Management wasn't unfriendly but offered nothing. Reasonable value for money, $17/night 2A, powered site. Suitable for overnight. We would stay again.

Cecil Plains Rural Retreat Caravan Park, Cecil Plains
Located 40km south of Dalby on the Millmerran road, this is a fairly modern park. It is owned and operated by the Millmerran Shire Council. Priced at $10/night (3rd night free) for a powered site with water, power and black water disposal at each site and $50/week it is apparently aimed at having through traffic stop and for the touring traffic through the region consider an alternative to the main tourist routes. It deserves to be successful. Amenities are new and are kept immaculate. Laundry is free. Being new, the park is a bit sparse at the moment and well and truly exposed to the wind as we discovered. Well worth the stop and suitable for an overnight or longer.

Bailey Bar Caravan Park, Charleville

Manager's name is Wendy O'Hern. $20 per night. Park has 50 sites and puts overflow onto oval at back of park. Recommend phoning ahead for booking, it gets very busy. We had site with slab. Reception staff excellent and guided us into site. Owners have camp oven meals 3 times week $14 pp main course and dessert. Also have yabby races every Tuesday night, good fun. Amenities clean, good size shower cubicles with shower curtains. Park lighting is sparse. Suitable for a few days.
Likes: Friendly staff and atmosphere. Free internet access near office.
Local Information: excellent RSL meals. Cosmos observatory. Friendly town to walk around.

The usual friendly welcome from Wendy greeted our arrival. Park was very full and we had no booking, but she found a site for us and helped us on to it. Despite crowding the facilities were adequate, very clean and well maintained. Excellent campfire meal served at a reasonable price, and a very good talk given by local police sergeant "Stainless" Steele on the topic of Safe Driving In the Outback (and a few more topics and jokes as well). We now wouldn't think of staying elsewhere in Charleville. $24 per night 2A before Top Tourist discount reasonable value.

Crowded park, small sites. Entertainment supplied by park staff was good, with profits going to Flying Doctors Friendly staff, staff helped us at the site. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money. Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Small sites, hard to negotiate into site, adequate taps close by. Quiet, claustrophobic park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere. Suitable for few days, well maintained park.
Added Touches: Family orientated activities that change each night.

Manager's name is Wendy. Friends who had the camp oven dinner the night before we got there said it was very poor and advised us to give it a miss. Very friendly staff, average staff response to complaints, van parking assistance provided by staff. Reasonable value for money ($21.60 2A per night powered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, cleanliness was average, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided. Inadequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, small sites, hard to negotiate into site. Basic laundry, claustrophobic park, plenty of shade. Clean UC electric bbq ($2). No playground. Suitable for few days.
Likes: Clean and friendly, wireless internet access point near office.
Dislikes: Too crowded, sites very close together.
Parking: Very limited, we parked out across the street.

Manager's name is Wendy O'Hern. The signage to the park is pretty ordinary, but my GPS found it with no problem. Good friendly park. The park was quite empty at this time of the year - I always travel out west for this reason in summer. The hand towels are no longer in the bathrooms as there is a sign up saying that some "nice" people kept removing them from the bathrooms! Friendly staff, van parking assistance provided by staff. Price was as expected, good value for money ($21.81 A1 C1 per night). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, dry change area, exhaust fans/good ventilation. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, average sized sites, concrete annex slabs, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by. No rec room, good camp kitchen, kiosk. Quiet, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere, no permanents. No playground, no pool. Suitable for a week or more, well maintained park, park is considered kid-safe.
Likes: Coming from Brisbane with Level 6 water restrictions I was able to wash my car there with a hose - what a luxury.
Dislikes: The entrance (and exits) are a tad narrow and one has to come off the street on a wide angle to straighten up your rig otherwise you're on too much of an angle and would scrape the side of your caravan.
Parking: Usual, park and pay at office.
Local Information: The Cosmos centre is worth a visit, but their night show is definitely worth going out of your way to see - the stars are so visible there especially through the 100x magnification telescopes.
Roads: Part of the road from Morven to Charleville had no shoulders, but also did not have much traffic on it.

Cobb & Co Caravan Park, Charleville
From the Warrego Highway turn right into Burke Street then Right into Alfred Street then right into Ridgeway Street. Ph: 07 4654 1053. Pets on application.
There is a new section to the park that is open without much shade. There is grass for each site around the outside but the middle has not been grassed yet and becomes muddy with rain. The amenities block is a demountable unit and includes a laundry. The old section is less appealing. The amenities block is old but the showers are clean. The laundry is in an open shelter. The area is more grassed than the new one. The management does not crowd the vans like some do. Friendly staff, van parking assistance provided by staff, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, good value for money ($22.00 2A per night, powered, off-peak season). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, dry change area, exhaust fans/good ventilation. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, large sites, very few concrete annex slabs, shade to some sites, adequate taps close by. Basic laundry, no rec room. Quiet, open & roomy park, family/friendly atmosphere, a few permanents. No playground, no pool. Suitable for a week or more, well maintained park.
Likes: Flat open sites.
Dislikes: Would be muddy in wet weather.
Parking: Plenty of parking in the street near the office.
Added Touches: Open fire bins and wood provided
Roads: Good bitumen roads in most directions

Manager's name is Justin Dendy. As this is a relatively new park the shade trees are still growing so in a few years there will be ample shade. They provide a station tour which while we did not go on this it was very favourably talked about. Camp Oven meal on Friday night. Friendly staff, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, very good value for money ($24 2A per night, powered, peak season). Manager's name is Justin & Peta Debney. This is a new park opened at the start of the year. It's on a working cattle station, so the owners are not always there when you arrive. Just pick a site. Justin will come by at the end of the day. All the sites are drive through, big enough for the biggest rig. There is a camp fire most nights, great atmosphere where you meet other campers, the owners usually stop by and are happy to talk about the property. Very quiet at night and the stars are fantastic. Good for two to three nights. Good management, friendly management. Good value for money. Very good amenities, adequate number to cater for tourists, were clean, were in good condition, water pressure was okay, there was adequate hot water. Very good sites, adequate number of tourist sites, sites were level, the site size was okay, drive-through sites were available. Laundry, quiet, open and roomy park. Clean UC gas bbq (free), with a congenial atmosphere, lit at night. Suitable for a few days, the park was well maintained.

Manager's name is Justin and Peta Debney. This is a brand new park, only opened about two months ago, so shade trees have not yet grown, but the sites are all drive-through, are large, and well grassed. The facilities are very clean and tidy, and wheelchair accessible. There are powered and unpowered sites with ample space between the level sites. This park is situated on a working cattle property so the owner/managers may not appear when you arrive, so you park yourself (very easy to do as huge grounds) and the extremely friendly and casual owners will see to you some time during the day. They are only too happy to chat about the property, which has been owned by the family since 1892, and the problems and joys of life in the outback. There are open campfires and BBQs available and a camp kitchen was under construction while we were there. It is lovely and quiet here, the stars are vivid as no street lighting to hinder, and the owners run station tours (lunch included) which are very interesting and informative. It is well worth staying a few days here as only a short drive into town to see the Cosmos Centre and the Bilby complex. The only small downside is they are not yet geared to accept EFTPOS. Good value for money.

Medium sized park. Sites are large and grassed. Amenities are adequate and kept in immaculate condition. The management team of Frank and Hilary are friendly and helpful- not only on park matters but various attractions in the district and little things such as places to shop. They are out and around the park at all times. The park has a number of long-term occupants associated with power-station and coal mine developments in the area. Good value for money, $18/night 2A powered site. Chinchilla is one of the nicest towns in western Qld and well worth a couple of days. This park is suitable for such a stopover.

Crows Nest Caravan Park, Crows Nest
Crows Nest is 46 kms north of Toowoomba on the road to Yarraman. New England Highway, 1 km south of post office. Ph: 07 4698 1269. Pets allowed on leash.
Manager's name is Rene & Brenda As we were at this park over the Easter weekend, the management had opened all caravan ensuite sites for general use to all park guests to help cope with extra traffic that the normal amenities block wouldn't have coped with. In addition, they had onsite in the bottom camp area Rent a Loos for the campers, so they didn't have to trek so far to the main block. I believe these managers have only been in this park coming up to 12 months. They do keep the park very well maintained, and I believe have further development ideas in the pipeline in regards to adding more ensuite van sites. There are currently 4 now. The manager Rene was very obliging in offering extra extension leads, hoses, wood chocks etc. Onsite the management runs a 'restaurant' certain nights of the week, and although we didn't eat there, everyone whom we spoke to that did, told as how great it was. Buffet style meal, roasts, vegies, dessert, tea/coffee all for around $17. It smelt fantastic throughout the campsite. Friendly staff, good staff response to complaints, van parking assistance provided by staff, staff helped us at the site, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was lower than expected, very good value for money ($25 2A per night, powered, peak season). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to only some sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, dry change area, paper towels/dryer provided, exhaust fans/good ventilation. Adequate number of tourist sites, some level sites, poor night lighting, average sized sites, concrete annex slabs to most sites, shade to most sites, drive-through sites. Good laundry, no rec room, late checkout allowed (past noon), dump point, van parking. Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere, a few permanents. UC gas bbq, congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. No playground. Clean pool is shaded, kid-safe pool area. Suitable for a week or more, suitable for families, well maintained park, park is considered kid-safe.
Likes: We chose to have our van near the open space at the bottom of the park, which enabled our children plenty of running space to play cricket, kick a ball etc. The great congenial open fire area is great, near the dam on the property. Fire was burning at all times, and up to anyone to stoke as they wished. Marshmallows were great.
Parking: Excellent amount of space to park as you check in.
Added Touches: The amazing bird aviary at the front of the park certainly kept the kids amused and the deer on the adjoining property.
Local Information: At Easter you can visit the Highfields Pioneer Village and step back in time. Only a short drive from Crows Nest, and relatively cheap day's entertainment $20 approx for family entry. You can see old shops, machinery, sheep shearing, blacksmithing etc. Treat yourself to a Billy Tea and Damper - it was yum. Pancakes were good too.

$22 per night. This is a working station that does not live up to the glossy pamphlet advert. The reception office was never in use at any time we were there, so we just found a site, as did everyone else. At around 6pm the owner comes round and collects the money, offers no receipts. The amenities are 2 showers and 2 toilets for each sex. They are clean and the showers are a good size with vanity basin. Women's toilet ran out of toilet paper. Showers were cold on second day because ran out of gas. Totally disappointing all round.
Likes: Hot artesian pools.

An open, roomy and well kept park with a pleasant outlook over a creek to a line of impressive hills. The managers are friendly and helpful and responsive to comments. Reasonable value for money. I have never experienced such terrible customer service in my life. Definitely give this park a big miss as the staff are nothing but unfriendly! Don't think this is just a personality clash or something, every person I meet in the park experienced a similar level of service and lack of friendliness. Van's are in bad condition. They are old and only have very basic facilities. Vans are charged per person such that one van would cost over $350 for one week for 5 people. Anyway don't say you haven't been warned. Grab a snack or bar meal in the town and then head for a van park in Toowoomba instead! Very unfriendly staff, bad staff response to complaints. Price was as expected, poor value for money ($75 A1 per week powered). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to only some sites, cleanliness was average, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good. Basic laundry, basic rec room. Quiet, claustrophobic park, not enough shade, family/friendly atmosphere. No playground. Clean pool is open to sun, kid-safe pool area.
Likes: Other residents / guests were very nice and helpful.
Dislikes: Ridiculous totally inflexible rules imposed by the park managers. No real help with local information. Things promised for van never delivered on, like extra furniture.
Parking: Park has a reasonable sized visitor car park.
Local Information: Gatton seems to have some decent facilities for a small town. Coles, Target, a number of Pubs, banks, a bus rail service to Toowoomba and Brisbane. Plenty of farm work if you want it, but look around and read the contracts carefully.
Roads: Gatton is a short exit from the main Warrego highway, The quality of the road is good, more than enough.

Ipswich Caravan Village, Ipswich
95 Mt Crosby Road, Tivoli. Ph: 07 3281 7951.
This park was hard to find, as although the address was 95 Crosby Road,Tivoli, the park itself was set back off the road on a side road, and even though our Navigator told us we were at our destination we still could not see the entrance to the park and went straight past then had to turn back, the only sign post was on the bus stop sign saying it was the caravan park bus stop.
When we arrived we could not get in through the boom gate so left the two rigs blocking the drive & went to the office where there was no one to be found, so as instructed by a notice continued up to the house, where there was still no one to be found. At this point we were told by security who unlocked the boom gate that the park manager was down at a cabin where a truck was, so headed off down where we found the manager having coffee with others on the balcony. On asking for the manager a very disgruntled woman got up and said she would come up & with a very hostile attitude asked how we got in through the boom gate. We commented on having a problem finding the park and were rudely spoken to & told that the sign had recently fallen down and was to be replaced. We were given a street where there was supposed to be about 8 sites to choose from but when we got to the street there was only 2 vacant sites, both being very difficult to get into with very narrow roadway and several obstacles to get around. In a very ordinary area where there were lots of neglected looking permanent vans. The amenities were being remodelled and were in a disgraceful condition, and no one even bothered to tell us that there was a small temporary toilet block behind the main block. Thank goodness we had only booked in for one night and after staying in hundreds of parks around the country, we would class this as one of the worst and could not recommend this park to anyone. We felt it was highway robbery at $27.50 per night. Very poor management. Poor value for money. Very poor amenities, close to sites. Very poor sites, adequate number of tourist sites, annexe slabs were available, hard to negotiate in to/out of site. Very poor atmosphere to park, too many permanents for this park. Average pool.

This is a bush caravan park, that I loved, so different to most other caravan parks, so peaceful and beautiful in the surrounds. Very friendly staff, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was lower than expected, good value for money ($14 A1 per night, powered, off-peak season). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to all sites, were clean, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, large sites, no sites with concrete annex slabs, very few sites are shaded, drive-through sites, late checkout allowed (up to noon), good camp kitchen, van parking. Peaceful, open & roomy park, not enough shade, family/friendly atmosphere, no permanents. Clean UC gas bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. No playground, no pool. Suitable for few days, well maintained park.
Likes: it was so different, friendly caretaker, right next to the woolshed, that you could stay hitched up. The camp kitchen was so different from anything I had ever seen best BBQs and so many old fashioned things, and also a camp fire if need be. The toilets wouldn't be to everyone's taste but were different and in a shed, only 3 toilets and 2 showers, but the water was hot and pressure great, so couldn't ask for more. Loved the park as it was so very country and hasn't lost its country charm

UPDATED REPORT NEEDED

There are no difficulties accessing the property and most campsites with an ordinary sedan and caravan. There are about 10 powered sites in an attractive open area and numerous areas for unpowered sites. All sites are spacious and well grassed and mown with plenty of shade. It is ideal for groups. Each campsite has a fireplace and a barbecue. Good firewood can be purchased for a moderate price and is delivered to your site. The nights were cool so fires were welcome but days were sunny and warm. Amenities blocks are simple but quite new and very clean. There are hot showers with plenty of hot water and composting toilets. Rain water is available for drinking. There is safe swimming and canoeing in the creek, pleasant walks and lovely bird life. Conducted nature walks are available. There are numerous tourist attractions in the area and Kilcoy is only 15 minutes away. The owners are friendly and helpful. No motorbikes can be ridden in the property and a walking pace speed limit is imposed so it is safe for children. Dogs are welcome and do not need to be leashed so long as they are under control. This is suitable for a short break or a longer holiday for people who enjoy the bush or want a change from the standard crowded caravan park along the coast.
Campground Rating 4: We will return.

Kingaroy Holiday Park, Kingaroy
On the D'Aguilar Highway on the approach from Nanango. Signposting is a bit confusing and entrance is off the highway in Evelyn Street. 48 Walter Road between Harris Road and Evelyn Street. Ph: 07 4162 1808 or 1800 502 218. BIG4 member. No pets allowed.
Although the price was well above the median price for parks in the region, the standard of this park was disappointing and certainly not what one expects from a BIG4 park. The reception at the office was friendly and helpful and local information was offered. However you were left to your own devices to find your own way from then on. The amenities were adequate and kept clean on weekdays but were not cleaned at all over the weekend that we were there. Grounds and gardens were poorly maintained. Bins were left overflowing. Despite signs to the contrary, dogs were allowed in the park. We felt that this park was poor value for money. Unfortunately the only alternative to this park in the town was not available due to the annual show being on but given the price difference and the standard of this park we would look to the alternative in the future. Price was higher than expected, poor value for money ($27 2A per night, powered, off-peak season). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people.
Parking: Plenty of room on road while checking in.
Local Information: Kingaroy provides a good base for the Bunya Mountains, the South Burnett wineries and a number of dams suitable for fishing and boating. Also only a short drive to the Maidenwell Observatory which puts on a very good star viewing show.
Roads: All good highway conditions

Manager's name is Trevor & Chris. We checked in for a couple of days and ended up staying for 3 weeks. We got discounted weekly rate, was $96 per week. Lovely big showers, even tho there was only 3 showers in ladies and 2 in mens, we never had to wait at all for a shower, water was always hot. They were cleaned daily, had soap on tap and paper hand towels. Yes the floor had red stain, from soil, but they were clean and smelt nice. Very friendly caretakers, yes power boxes on some sites were high, but they are being lowered after the show in May 2009. Most people came for a couple of days like us, but ended up staying longer. They now have 2 washing machines, and the one dryer, and ample clothes lines. At 4pm most days the Kookaburras would start laughing - lovely. Very friendly staff, good staff response to complaints, staff offered tourist advice, van parking assistance provided by staff, staff helped us at the site, staff explained park layout and facilities. Well signposted off highway about 20 km north of Miles, but we did wonder where we were going – after following a dirt road for about a kilometre through the bush we found the park. After paying for our site, we were directed further through the park and helped on site by another friendly person. The park is built using some of the facilities used by the RAAF during World War II when it was a munitions base. The drive-through sites were large. The toilet block, whilst not large, had big shower and toilet cubicles and was clean and well maintained and more than adequate for the number of sites. A good overnight spot in an interesting environment. $20 per night.

We did not know very much about this park prior to our arrival as there does not seem to be reference to it in van park guides. We had heard about it from friends who had stayed here. The big attraction appears to be the Artesian Spa Baths within easy walking distance of the park. We had heard of "free night" offers but at the time of our visit powered sites were $17.50 per night & we had an ensuite site for $24 per night with only $4 for the 3rd night. $52 for 3 nights on an ensuite site was great value for money. Some visitors come for several weeks to go to the spa baths. The park is well laid out with sealed roads, some concrete pads & plenty of shrubs & trees separating the sites. The water is bore water which becomes more palatable if left to stand for a while. We believe the park is council owned & leased to a private operator. Improvements are taking place & this park should look really great when the shrubs & trees mature.

Stayed 1 night. $22.50 per night, plus refundable $5.00 for key. This is the oil capital of Queensland so we expected to see a little town. We arrived at the petrol station/pub and asked for directions to Moonie and were told "this is it". I asked where the caravan park was and was told "this is it". Reception, which doubles as everything, was very friendly and helpful. We were given a meal voucher for $16.99 and two coffee vouchers. A great overnight stop. Level dirt sites with bore water and power. One toilet and shower for women, same for men, both in spotless condition. No TV reception. Poor mobile telephone connection. On the night we stayed it was roast night (pork), which I had and it was just delicious. Leszek had a large rump steak which was cooked to perfection. He said it was the best steak he had eaten in a long time. With the voucher, my meal ended up being free. Very good atmosphere in the pub. Road noise was minimal. Seven vans parked the night we stayed. We had a good breakfast in the "restaurant" in the morning. An excellent overnight stop, even if just for the meal, and we would definitely stay again.

Manager's name is Ivan & Heather. A friendly reception on a terribly rainy day. Parking area while checking in was close to reception. This is a very clean and tidy park which is obvious on arrival at the gate. Personally taken to site and assisted to park. Local town maps were offered. The price of $25 2A was less with the BIG4 discount of 10 per cent. Showers were large and roomy though cool breezes throughout were not appreciated on our very cold and rainy visit. There was a bench for clothes with hooks for shower caddy and rubber floor mats. No shower curtains but these were not needed as the area is large enough to avoid spray. Toilets were well kept with liquid soap and electric hand dryer. The laundry had only two dryers and thus a long wait was the order of the day while everyone was trying to dry their wet clothes. Barambah Bush Caravan Park, Murgon
About six kilometers from Murgon on the Barambah Road which is the road that takes you to the Bjelke Peterson Dam. Ph: 07 4168 1085.
Local Information: Set on about 200 acres of mainly scrub and is quiet and peaceful, you can go for bush walks [maps are supplied at the office] and there are wallabies, kangaroos, koala's and many birds. In the heart of the Barambah wine trail, only minutes to town and about 10 mins to BP Dam.

Manager's name is Ian and Judith. A great park set among the forest and central to a number of South Burnett attractions (wineries, dams, etc). It is a very peaceful location. It has one of the best designed amenities blocks we have come across and it is kept immaculate. Managers, Ian and Judith, are friendly and helpful. Help with parking is offered. The park does not offer any of the "add ons" such as playgrounds and swimming pool and there is probably not enough to keep kids amused but it is great for adults. Good value at $22 2A per night and we will stay again.
Likes: The whole bushland ambience.
Roads: Good highway conditions.

On Bjelke-Petersen Dam which was at its lowest level - less than 3% - so there was no fishing. But this park is very nice and has a lovely outlook over the dam. Homestead Caravan Park and Cabins, Nanango
17 Arthur Street, just south of town centre. Arthur street is on the left when southbound. Ph: 07 4163 1733. Family Parks member.
Manager's name is June and Ray. I am not sure if van parking assistance is usual procedure or as in our case the site was made difficult to access because of a badly located tree. Price includes family park discount and was for ensuite site. Present owners have improved the park in recent years (it was full of "ferals" years ago). Friendly staff, van parking assistance provided by staff. Price was as expected, good value for money ($20.70 2A per night). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to all sites, cleanliness was average, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, average sized sites, concrete annex slabs, hard to negotiate into site, poor water quality, adequate taps close by. Basic laundry, no rec room, good camp kitchen, secure entry. Quiet, open & roomy park, not enough shade, family/friendly atmosphere. Clean UC gas bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere. No pool. Suitable for few days, well maintained park.

This is a very nice little park and offers good value for money. Management could not have been more friendly or helpful. There are some sites with slabs but this is in the middle of the permanent section so we found it was better to select a grassed site near the other tourists. The amenities were old but spotless. We found the park was a good base in order to visit the Bunya Mountains. Very friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice, van parking assistance provided by staff, staff helped us at the site, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was lower than expected, very good value for money ($16.00 2A per night, powered, peak season). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, dry change area, paper towels/dryer provided, exhaust fans/good ventilation. Lake Boondooma Camping and Recreational Area, Proston
Lake Boondooma is a man-made lake 20km from Proston, which in turn is located NW of Wondai and Kingaroy. The lake is stocked with native fish and the biggest users are fishermen but water skiers also make use of the facility. It is a park of two distinct areas, separated by 2-3kms. The powered section is set high on a ridgeline above the dam wall. It is flat. The sites are large and the area well maintained - although very dry when we viewed it. The amenities block is central to all sites. While some sites have a view of the lake, there is very little outlook from the park. The unpowered section is lakeside and is by far the most popular area for visitors. The kiosk with basic provisions and fuel is located there. The sites are as you find them but most will have a lake view. The major problem is that they can become exposed to the wind and finding an acceptably level site can also be a problem. The amenity blocks in this area (2 of) are large and well kept. How far they are away from your site is up to you. The unpowered area would be our choice if visiting in the future. Like all Dams in most parts of the country, this one is well down on its capacity and consequently not as scenic as it might be. Nevertheless, we enjoyed our stay and would go again. Because it is located well off most tourist routes it is not really an overnight stop location, however it is suitable for any length of stay. Reasonable value for money, $17/night powered, $14/night unpowered.

When we arrived we were greeted by very friendly managers. We are travelling with a group of 5 caravans. We were immediately given the keys to the amenities and advised to go and get ourselves set up and then we could come back to the office and pay our fees. Aaron showed us to our sites which was great. Very friendly staff, van parking assistance provided by staff, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, very good value for money ($23.40 2A per night, shoulder season). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is very good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, paper towels/dryer provided, exhaust fans/good ventilation. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, concrete annex slabs to most sites, shade to most sites, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Clean UC gas bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. No playground, no pool. Suitable for few days, well maintained park.
Likes: Aaron and his partner are only a young couple, only been here for 8 months. They are working very hard to get the park in tip top condition. Aaron has been digging up all the gardens which we get the impression were very run down. A huge skip bin was in the side street full of tree limbs, rubbish etc and he is starting to put in new plants. The driveways in the park and very clean and the concrete surrounds have been painted white which look good. Give them 12 months and the park should be absolutely beautiful. There are some very nice new looking cabins also in the park
Dislikes: Nothing, everything is fine. Probably only downfall is there is only 1 washing machine and 1 dryer. Another washing machine or 2 would be great.
Added Touches: Wednesday nights they have a sausage sizzle, $2.00 honesty box.

9km north of St George on the Carnarvon Highway. Ph: 07 4625 5546.
Manager's name is Rick and Sharon Williams. This is a small family operated well-maintained bush camp 9 kms north of St George. We received a friendly welcome and were escorted to the camping area to select our site. There are powered and unpowered absolute riverfront sites in a peaceful and spacious bush setting. You can fish right outside your front door. The unisex amenities, with an ensuite-style bathroom plus a separate shower and second toilet, were spotless. There is a small laundry with washing machine ($2 a load) and tub. The amenities are about 150 metres from the riverfront sites; however, there are large powered sites nearby. Most of the sites are roomy and there is room for large rigs. There is plenty of shade with some sites screened by plants. We enjoyed our 3 night stay and will definitely stay again. It is suitable for both a short stop-over or longer holiday. This is a bush camp so you'll need your torch and bring some drinking water. Very friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice, staff helped us at the site, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, very good value for money ($20 2A per night, peak season). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to only some sites, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, dry change area, paper towels/dryer provided. Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere. Pets at manager's discretion. No playground, no pool. Well maintained park.
Likes: We loved the laided-back peaceful atmosphere, the warm welcome, and the spacious site.
Added Touches: Each site has a fireplace. Pick up a discount voucher for the local cellar door for a free coffee with morning tea.
Local Information: It is a short drive in to St George where the river walk is lovely.

Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to only some sites, were dirty, condition is very good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, dry change area, exhaust fans/good ventilation. Dislikes: Although park was very new, the owners were letting it down badly because of inadequate cleaning of amenities and BBQ area. Amenities were full of bugs. No flyscreens or insect zappers. Grass very high around amenities, and sometimes had to negotiate around sprinklers to use them.
Local Information: TV reception - No digital. Imparja crackly. Easy satellite dish setup. Mobile phone reception - Good. Autogas available locally. Liked town/region. Local winery well worth a visit. Emu egg collection looked interesting but didn't visit this trip.

Top of Town Caravan & Accommodation Village, Stanthorpe
Stanthorpe is on the New England Highway, about 40 kms north of the New South Wales border. 10 High Street, on northern edge of town. Coming from Warwick do not take bypass road but veer left and continue on old highway. After 1 km the showgrounds are on your right and the park's entrance is just past the showgrounds on the crest of the hill. If coming from Tenterfield side, again don't take the bypass road, take the old highway thorough town and at the crest of the hill just pass the historic village, you will find the entrance to park. Ph: 07 4681 4888 or 1800 815 123. Dogs allowed at managers discretion, on lead at all times.
I booked my site and paid a deposit and was quoted a rate, when I booked in, the rate had increased a few days before, and I was expected to pay the increased rate, even though I had a confirmed rate and paid a deposit. When I asked why, the girl at reception said it was a hospitality thing but I wouldn't know that, in which I replied I would as I had worked in hospitality for 15 years and hotels/serviced apartments for the past 10 years. She then tried to say something else, making it worse with each attempt. Was very unimpressed with her excuses and the increase. They did not even have the common courtesy to inform me of the increase via email. Everyone I have told said that when quoted a rate and paid a deposit the quoted/confirmed rate stays. It marred my holiday with the extra I had to pay per night. Average staff friendliness, bad staff response to complaints. Price was much higher than expected, poor value for money ($35 A1 per night, ensuite, off-peak season). Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, average sized sites, concrete annex slabs to some sites, shade to most sites, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Good laundry. Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere, no permanents. Suitable for few days.
Likes: It was a big park, nice view from some points of the park.
Dislikes: The price increase, the ensuites were in the middle of nowhere, travelling by myself, I was glad of my neighbour, otherwise would not of felt safe, bush surrounding me. The ensuite was one of the smallest I have ever been in. Washing machine price is high at $4 per load.
Local Information: I would of liked to go to the national park. Lavender farms, wineries, fruit stalls.
Roads: Good road

We have stayed at this park several times in the past two years and have found it convenient and value for money. It is a nice walk into town now along footpath all the way. Good camp kitchen with gas and electric BBQ near majority of van sites. Small toilet block behind. New major toilet block opened recently. Larger camp kitchen is mainly used by backpackers/fruitpickers and is a bit unkempt sometimes. New camping areas are flat and mainly grassed with BBQ areas nearby. Vans are given sites depending on size. Very friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, good value for money ($23 2A per night powered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, paper towels/dryer provided, exhaust fans/good ventilation. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, concrete annex slabs, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Basic laundry, basic rec room, good camp kitchen, dump point. Quiet, open & roomy park, family/friendly atmosphere. Clean UC gas bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. No playground. Clean pool is open to sun, kid-safe pool area, tables and chairs provided. Suitable for a week or more, suitable for families, well maintained park.
Likes: We have requested specific sites in past and been allocated them. Despite being close to road there is little traffic at night.
Dislikes: Smoking in the smaller camp kitchen - makes it an attraction for backpackers/fruitpickers.
Parking: Check-in parking area provided.
Local Information: Wine and food! Don't miss lunch at the Bramle Patch - great fresh berry desserts or the Visitor Information Centre. Good area for bicycle riding on quiet sealed country roads especially during the week. Small gym and heated outdoor pool in town.

We now have 3 camp kitchens, as well as 4 other "mini Camp Kitchens" with free gas BBQs & kitchen sinks at various locations around the park. We have increased our number of sites to 210 powered and bush camping. Generators are permitted in the bush camping areas with a curfew of 9pm, we have no permanent residents. In addition to the existing amenities we have a new state of the art amenities block completed in January 2007, we also have a drive thru dump point for the convenience to motor homers as well as the dump point for cartridges (there is a hose at these facilities for rinsing). Our current Managers are Francis McLaughlin and Brent Bruen who have been with us since April 2006.

Update supplied by park owners.

Parking was a do-it-yourself affair with no assistance provided. Two amenity blocks. Older one was a demountable building immediately behind the BBQ area. No exhaust fans and not very pleasant. The other block was of a higher standard and actually had a washing machine and dryer in the outer area of the ablutions block. This was in addition to the specific laundry block. Sites were of a good size with drive-thru facilities. Taps and sullage were adjacent. En-suite sites advertised were not evident as major renovations were underway. Camp kitchen was situated in area away from tourist sites. It seemed to cater more for the backpacker-pickers who made up a good number of guests. The bunkhouse accommodation was nearby mainly for the camp kitchen. The pool was clean but there was not enough tables, seats etc. around the pool. No toddler pool. Garbage drops were isolated from sites. No shade around pool area. No playground for children. The 'short distance to town, golf club etc' was not quite correct and as there are no footpaths along the road it was necessary to drive to town. Average management. Reasonable value for money. Amenity water pressure was okay, there was adequate hot water. Average sites, adequate number of tourist sites, sites were level, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Quiet park. UC bbq with seating provided. Clean pool. Suitable for a few days.
Likes: Although not really within safe walking distance it was the closest to town.
Dislikes: The better standard toilets and showers were not really adjacent to van sites as they were a lot of cabins closer than van sites.
Local Information: Visits to cherry farm, olive farm and lavender farms make for a very interesting day's drive and not too far away from the park.

We had no difficulty accessing in our 2wd falcon and 18ft van. It is reasonably priced at $12/night unpowered, $17/night powered. There are a number of powered sites as well as numerous unpowered sites. The powered sites are located along a creek line and are quite pleasant. Each has its own fireplace and firewood will be brought to the site by management (at a cost). There is no drinking water at the powered sites but non-potable water is available at a number of spots throughout. All sites are grassed and can become dusty in even moderately dry weather. Current amenities are old, lacking in size and in need of pulling down. Management recognizes this and two new modern blocks are under construction and due for opening by Easter 2006. The property is over 1000 hectares and caters primarily for trail-bikers and 4wd enthusiasts. However the property is also an old gold field and fossicking is an activity for many visitors. Old shafts remain so be careful on the trail-bike and hiking at night. It was quiet mid-week when we were there but we were pleased to be leaving on a Saturday morning when the trail-bikes were starting up. If the quiet bush life is for you then avoid weekends, public and school holidays. The management is everything good managers should be; friendly, helpful, obvious around the park but non-intrusive. We will go again, timing our trip to cater for our liking of a quiet life in the bush. But, if trail-biking/4wd is your thing then this is a place for you also.

Jolly Swagman Caravan Park, Toowoomba
UPDATED REPORT NEEDED

This caravan park is on land which rises steeply from the roadway. This is somewhat disconcerting when first arriving, as there is no flat ground on which to park, near the office. In fact, the office is a tiny cubicle, barely noticeable near the entrance. It was being refurbished at the time of our stay, and covered in plaster dust. Our check in was very casual. We had booked in advance by telephone, but were told to drive on and take any site of our liking, and to worry about the paperwork and payment later on. We paid $76.00 for a powered site for 4 nights. Cabins and tent sites are also available. There was no written site plan or Park Rules. But we had no difficulty locating a good, flat site on a concrete pad, with water and power very adjacent. Each site was well marked and has its own metal garbage bin and provision for sullage. A large number of permanents reside in this caravan park, easily outnumbering the bona fide tourists. The large permanent population puts pressure on the toilet, shower and laundry facilities as there is only one ablution block. A key is provided for this block, but the door was often kept open. There is piped music in the toilet block, which I dislike. The laundry contains 3 washing machines and 2 dryers, but they were in heavy demand on the days that I wanted to wash clothes, and I had to frequently return to the laundry until a washing machine became vacant. There is plenty of clothesline space once you get access to a washing machine. The park is neat and well maintained, with some nice floral displays near the entrance. There is no pool or kiosk. There is some overnight traffic noise from trucks changing gears and braking, but it is a quiet atmosphere within the park. It is said by management that this park is the closest caravan park to Toowoomba's CBD. This is probably the case, but it is still a long walk, and there are no shops conveniently situated nearby, although a liquor shop and hotel are nearby. The hotel serves excellent meals. This place is a good transit park or suitable for a stay of several days, but a city with Toowoomba's population of nearly 100,000 deserves a better caravan park than this one.

Stayed 2 days, $19.80 per night powered site (TT discount). Very helpful and friendly reception. Entry was by boom gate number, and toilets were accessed by key. We were given site 59, which had a double concrete slab, for van and annex, and some afternoon shade. We were near the central large amenities block and camp kitchen. The amenities were spotless and the laundry was very large with 5 washing machines and 3 commercial dryers. Water pressure excellent. There were lots of clothes lines. I spoke to Fred while he was cleaning the camp kitchen, and noticed how pedantic he was. This could also be seen in the amenities section. Children's playground was small. There was no swimming pool. This was a large, green park with average sized sites with slabs, most sites had some shade. Park had tar roads. The gutters to the sites were a little high to get up, but were ok. There were lots of cabins, and some permanents dotted around the park. Good night lighting. The park was about a quarter full when we were there, so we found it an excellent, quiet, clean, green park, with very helpful reception. It was also very close to shopping and food shops. We would definitely stay again.

Showers and toilets not big enough to swing a kitten let alone a cat. Wheelies facility in shower consisted of a plastic garden chair. You would have to leave the door open to fit in, dreadful. Staff not unfriendly, even the office needs cleaning up. Overpriced for what you get, amenities though very small were clean. Good supply hot water, pressure good, could not cope with a crowd. There were only a few concrete sites but the slabs were cracked and uneven. Other sites were all dirt. Lighting was good, plenty of bins. Laundry was clean, could not find bbq. No playground, no pool. Would never stay here again. Has an air of long term neglect. Average staff friendliness.

I chose this park because I thought it might be away from the highway, but you can still hear the trucks. The van park is old & tired. Level sites are hard to find and there are no slabs. The amenities were old and tired - we didn't have showers because they were so decrepit and not well sealed for the cold weather. Good management, friendly management, management was helpful. Amenities were clean. Drive-through sites were available. Quiet, open and roomy park. Suitable for overnighter.
Likes: There is plenty of space, but the vans sites are down the hill.
Dislikes: Everything is just old & tired - BBQ was unusable.
Local Information: You need to drive into Warwick because it's about 2 km to the centre, and the park has a rural setting.

Small caravan park on the north side of Warwick. Dog friendly. The owners are trying hard to improve this park. Mixture of tourist and permanents. The amenities are old but very clean. Nice gardens. Small and clean camp kitchen. Next door to the Matilda service station where you can buy newspapers, fuel and fast foods. Management friendly and helped put us on site. Cost was $23 per night. We found the traffic noise a bit of a problem. For this area, fair value.

Warwick Caravan Park, Warwick
Palmer Avenue. The caravan park is situated off the New England Highway and road noise is at a minimum. Ph: 07 4661 3632. Dogs allowed.
UPDATED REPORT NEEDED

The caravan park is tidy and well kept. Bird aviary opposite the amenity block. The amenities are old but clean. The north east corner would get some road noise at night. There are some full slab sites but not very many. Others have a small piece of concrete as a stepping mat. We found that adequate in our application. A small number of drive-though sites. The land is not level and has quite a slope downwards. There are indentations in the ground, where the trailer wheels are to be placed (which I imagine would only suit single axle trailers). Using these indentations makes the van almost level. Should you not use the indentations great care would need to be taken to chock the trailer wheels before attempting to unhitch. Any small leeway with the trailer brake engaged would result in a dent to the towing vehicle for absolute certain. Some shade in a couple of powered sites but on the whole quite open. In summertime it would be hot as the vans face a westerly aspect. Large mown and vacant area immediately opposite and to the west. Has a BBQ and covered table and chairs, and basketball ring. Excellent for exercising your pets. Unfortunately, a residence which also abuts this area lets their two large dogs roam free and untethered. These dogs also enter the caravan park and roam. We could not let our dog off the leash in that vacant area because of these roaming dogs. That was the only downside to our stay at this caravan park.
