Just follow the signs...easy! Advertises cable TV but not now available. This park is a little gem with its big shady, green sites. Has two amenities blocks; the older one at the front is basic; and washing machines were out of order but the new one is excellent. This is a tidy town and people are justly proud of it and dedicated to its heritage restoration. Friendly staff, good staff response to complaints, staff offered tourist advice. Price was as expected, good value for money. Water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, some level sites, good night lighting, large sites, very few concrete annex slabs, shade to most sites, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by, no rec room Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere Congenial bbq area atmosphere No playground. Clean pool is open to sun. Suitable for few days, well maintained park.
Likes: Green grassy sites after dirt parks! Space! The atmosphere was very friendly in the town.
Dislikes: No washing machines working near our site by the old block
Added Touches: Manager is a local identity well versed in history of the town.
Local Information: Visit the Croydon General store, trading since 1894, for a walk back in time. The new information centre has an excellent video introduction to the area. A must see before walking the old police precinct.
Roads: Good road from Normanton

Likes: Having arrived at this park as a stop gap because of major flooding further on we were not disappointed at having to stay here for two weeks, in fact we had a ball. Along with other caravanners all being held up for the same reasons we all had a most enjoyable time. This was helped by the wonderful and caring attitudes of the park owners who live on site and could not have made our stay in this tiny town more enjoyable. A fabulous mineral museum open to the public and some of the nicest towns people all combined to make our stay just great.
Added Touches: Two good supermarkets, butcher and fruit and vegie shop, petrol prices cheaper than on the coast. The park has a very good selection of take away and sit-down meals, all very good quality and quantity for the price which was reasonable.

Gulf Country Caravan Park, Karumba
444 kms North of Cloncurry, in the Gulf Country. Yappar Street. Ph: 07 4745 9148.
A well-run dog friendly caravan park with helpful management who provide tourist information, assistance in getting on site and put on Friday night sausage sizzles. The park is busy during winter months but we found that the excellent amenities and laundry were more than adequate. There is some shade and sites are reasonably spacious. Most sites have concrete slabs. It is a quiet park and the atmosphere is friendly and sociable. Many people stay for several weeks in winter so advance booking is a good idea. The park is very close to the shops and boat ramp and convenient to the pub which provides good meals. We enjoyed our stay and would return. We paid $22 per night for 2 adults.

Karumba Point Sunset Caravan Park, Karumba
Palmer Street, Karumba Point. Turn off at the sign on the right as you get near Karumba. Just follow the signs. The park is approximately 70 kms north of Normanton. Turn left as you approach the township and head out to the Sunset Tavern. The park is about 200 metres along the river from that. Ph: 07 4745 9277. Pets at manager's discretion.
Right at Karumba Point, beside the boat ramp and beach. At first sight, nice looking, palm trees and other shady trees. Gravel roads, large sites, no slabs. Amenities are clean and the pool area pleasant. The problem with this park is the smell - no sullage, so it goes everywhere - must be a health hazard. The fish cleaning area is washed down daily, but the smell never leaves. Combine that with the septic system and it is easy to understand why it is on the nose. The fanatical fishermen who move in and stay for months don't seem to notice. Management were very friendly and we are sure they are doing all they can, except putting in sullage. For all of that, we were almost far enough away from the smell and had a nice 3-day stay (long enough to see the sights if you don't fish)
Likes: Sunset Cruise on Norman River, dinner at Sunset Tavern, just up the road.
Dislikes: Never ending smell.

Manager's name is Jock & Trish. Managers were the highlight of this park. Ship-shape and smoothly run under sometimes trying conditions due to old and faltering infrastructure. Very friendly staff, good staff response to complaints, staff offered tourist advice, van parking assistance provided by staff, staff helped us at the site, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was much higher than expected, reasonable value for money ($29 2A per night powered). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, paper towels/dryer provided, exhaust fans/good ventilation, disabled facilities. Inadequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, small sites, hard to negotiate into site, poor water quality. Basic laundry, basic rec room, good camp kitchen, kiosk, disabled facilities, dump point. Quiet, claustrophobic park, not enough shade. Pets at manager's discretion. Clean UC gas bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere. No playground Clean pool is shaded, kid-safe pool area, tables and chairs provided. Suitable for few days, well maintained park.
Likes: Superb management with loyal and cohesive, hard working staff. Nothing was too difficult for them.
Dislikes: Semi-permanents with washing machines gushing water all over the place and no sullage at the sites. Management and staff kept busy fixing this issue daily.
Parking: Just line up on the street and wait! Handled well by the managers.
Added Touches: Free sausage sizzle each month but we were too late. Good fish cleaning facilities but nowhere to wash down boats.
Local Information: Karumba is a good place to visit ... just to say that you've been there.
Roads: Roads in are okay in the dry but I wouldn't like to travel there in the wet. Narrow roads and very soft shoulders during the wet.

Manager's name is Jock. The park changed hands 2 years ago and the rates have gone up to be about $40 a week dearer than the other 2 parks in town. Despite this, it is still very popular. The smell from the septics is now only occasional and most of the burrs from previous reports have gone. You do need to be a keen fisherman to be here as there is nothing else to do. Amenities are kept very clean and the pool & camp kitchen are quite good. Very good management, friendly management, management responsive to comments, management was helpful. Reasonable value for money. Very good amenities, adequate number to cater for tourists, close to sites, were clean, were in good condition, water pressure was okay, there was adequate hot water. Good sites, adequate number of tourist sites, sites were level, hard to negotiate in to/out of site, adequate taps close by. Laundry, good camp kitchen, kiosk, disabled facilities, car wash, dump point. Good atmosphere to park, quiet, shady park. Dogs allowed, must be kept on lead. Clean gas bbq (free), lit at night, with seating provided. Very good clean pool, area is shaded. Suitable for month or longer, the park was well maintained.
Dislikes: Boats tend to be washed wherever there is a spare site
Added Touches: Fish cleaning tables, close to boat ramp
Roads: Good road, but single lane in places. Best to pull off and wait if you see a road train coming.

We were having a very, very lovely camping and fishing holiday - my husband and I and children 1 and 3 yrs old. at this caravan park until a long term visitor complained unreasonably about our baby crying. We were disgusted that management actually validated the unrealistic complaints and had us pack up our camp and move to a cabin. We ended up leaving. Average management. Reasonable value for money. Very good amenities, were clean, were in good condition, water pressure was okay, there was adequate hot water. Poor sites. Laundry. Poor atmosphere to park. Clean bbq
Likes: clean amenities, close to water and boat ramp
Dislikes: the sites are very cramped, no space for car parking, cars clog up the aisles of vans. No grass just sandy dirt and prickles.
Added Touches: fish cleaning tables each with water - very clean
Local Information: great fishing, excellent meals at local tavern,
Roads: good.

Report submitted by R Willett, Tieri Qld.

This was a much awaited holiday but at $203 per week and the sites being small, full of burrs and bindii and no slabs and no sullage this turned into a nightmare. Sullage water from washing machines, showers and general sludge ran off into other peoples sites and smelt. The site we were in for the three weeks we managed to stay had a most unpleasant stench of sewage. This was never fixed from day one and made us quite ill. The ablutions were good, clean and the staff tried to be helpful with any questions. They could not do anything about removing the rotten smell. The burrs in our matting had to be removed with a high pressure jet from a car wash at Mt Isa. We were planning to stay 6 weeks but only just managed 3. Friendly staff, van parking assistance provided by staff. Price was higher than expected, reasonable value for money ($196 2A per week). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is very good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, average sized sites, adequate taps close by. Good laundry, good camp kitchen, dump point. Noisy, claustrophobic park, plenty of shade, no permanents. Dogs on leash. No playground. Clean pool is shaded.
Likes: good fish cleaning facilities, closeness to ramp.
Dislikes: lack of concrete slabs, pot holed dirt road, lawns (not much) full of serious burrs, no lighting at all should make this place a serious burglar's paradise, very easy to fall over at night, torch is a must. Obnoxious smell all day and night from fishing cleaning tables and septic system. No gas supplies and very little in way of supplies from mini mart. This caravan park really only for serious fisher people. This park is the most expensive we have encountered in our travels.
Added Touches: Free sausage sizzle.
Local Information: Local hotel has good meals and set in a great location but, everything in this town seemed very, very expensive.
Roads: Single lane bitumen, road otherwise okay, in rain can become trapped and shoulders broken.
Date 05/2006. Park Rating 2.5: Suitable for month or longer.

Adels Grove Campground, Lawn Hill

Local Information: Canoeing in the gorge is a must.
Roads: Road from Camooweal was rough but not too bad through Riversleigh Station. The Gregory River end was horrific not suitable for caravans. Should carry diesel with you as very expensive at Adels.

Very friendly staff, good staff response to complaints, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, very good value for money ($25 2A per night unpowered). Likes: The Grove camping area is a no generator area but you can park on the upper level where generators are allowed. The information desk, cafe and bar are all excellent with helpful staff.
Roads: Either way you approach there is a lot of dirt road. The road from Gregory Downs is not bad for the first 50klms of dirt, but the last 50 kms is very rough 20-30 kms per hour. The road to Camooweal is longer but better, but please check with the locals as things change quite quickly.

Gulfland Motel Caravan Park, Normanton
Caravan park at Gulfland Motel (The Big Barra), Landsborough Street, 1.5 km south of Post Office. This park is on the main highway and is not difficult to find, just look for the big Barra. Ph: 07 4745-1290.
The first thing you notice is a sense of neglect (we think the place is up for sale which could explain that). On arrival we couldn't find anyone to assist us, eventually located a flustered lady in the laundry of the motel who "didn't have time" to help us find a suitable site. We were told to avoid certain sites as they had problems, she took our money and we found our own site. Most of the sites are small but a number have new-looking concrete pads. Most of the sites are gravel and they, and some of the roadways are uneven. There is no night lighting. The amenities are modular and each contains toilet cubicles and three fibreglass shower cubicles. No private changing area, just a double hook outside each shower and a heavy-looking curtain across the front. On the positive side, the shower had a full strong flow of hot water. We only stayed the one night but the park was very quiet. The only external noise we heard was a light aircraft taking off about 6.30am from the airfield next door. Suitable for a night or more.

Normanton Tourist Park, Normanton
14 Brown Street, off the main road into town, turn south/left into Brown Street. Turn left when you see the purple pub on the right when driving NE along the Burke Developmental Road from Cloncurry. Ph: 07 4745 1121 or 1800 193 469.
Only a one night stay so didn't get as good a feel for the park as we would have liked but when we return to Normanton we will definitely stay here again. Friendly staff. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($90 2A C1 per night cabin). Cabin was clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Mostly level sites, good night lighting. Good laundry, no rec room. Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, no permanents. No playground. Clean pool is shaded, pool area not considered kid-safe, tables and chairs provided. Suitable for few days, suitable for families, well maintained park, park is considered kid-safe.
Likes: Huge 25m pool and a spa to boot. Very central to everything.
Local Information: Gulflander, Krys The Savannah King and the wetlands.

Report submitted by JK&L - The Big Trip.

This is a small park, which I imagine is full in the cool winter months. In September it was half empty and relatively quiet. The facilities were adequate, with clean, although dated, ablution facilities. There is a nice artesian spa pool adjacent to the huge swimming pool. The pool is a definite plus to the park. However, our site (22) was adjacent to an indigenous town camp with loud music and a bit of noisy squabbling. The park is right in the centre of town and is a handy site to local pubs and shops. The price was very good ($22) and was value for money. Management was friendly and helpful. Sites were a little on the small size but OK. Some had shade and slabs, but others were on grassed sites. Suitable for a week or more, well maintained park.

Burke & Wills Roadhouse, Wurung
Roadhouse on Burke Development Road, about half way between Normanton and Cloncurry. Ph: 07 4742 5909. Dogs on leash.
Average staff friendliness. Price was higher than expected, reasonable value for money ($18.00 2A per night, powered, peak season). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to only some sites, cleanliness was average, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, disabled facilities. Mostly level sites, poor night lighting, no sites with concrete annex slabs, very few sites are shaded, drive-through sites Basic laundry, no rec room. Noisy, open & roomy park, not enough shade. No playground, no pool. Suitable for overnighter.
Likes: Convenience
Dislikes: Disorganised; paid at roadhouse and left to own devices. Van parking ad-hoc. One power pole with a dozen power points. No water. Road trains were noisy all night.
Date 08/2009. Park Rating 2:
Report submitted by Nan & Pop.

We left our van there so we could visit Lawn Hill National Park, as do many travellers. The other choice is Gregory Downs, not a park, just on the river, no security. Management were very friendly and assured us our van would be safe. The area, behind the roadhouse, is basic; first in, best site. Amenities are clean, shower area is large. Many road trains come and go, but stop at night. Good food is available. A good overnighter and while not totally secure, we were happy to leave the van there for a couple of days.
Date 07/2007. Park Rating: Difficult to rate as it is a roadhouse, but certainly better than some parks we have been in.
