Alva Beach Tourist Park, Alva Beach
16 km east of Ayr. Easy to find if you find the correct road out of Ayr. Just follow the road for about 15kms and it is on the right. Ph: 07 4783 3383.
One of the most attractive parks we have visited. Palm lined avenues separate spacious, well maintained, well grassed sites. Some have concrete pads some just grass. The garden beds and shrubs are all in excellent condition. During our stay the amenity block was cleaned at least twice a day. There is a small, well-equipped camp kitchen and an excellent, undercover, barbecue area. The pool is sparkling clean and the staff very friendly and helpful. This is the place for the keen fishermen. We were the odd-ones-out whilst we were there as we didn't have the tinny on the car roof or the fold-up boat trailer on the back of the van (and, if you could fit it in, the quad-bike). Unfortunately for us, we stayed there over a long weekend and the park was invaded by families with their boats and quad-bikes and we were subjected to a continuous procession of quad-bikes going to and from the beach from dawn 'til after dusk. At other times I imagine this would be a great place to visit and relax. Two negatives: sandflies, and whilst the pool was beautiful and clean there is no shallow area. It goes deep very quickly and could be dangerous for young children or non-swimmers. Suitable for a few days, or longer, especially if you are a fisherman.

UPDATED REPORT NEEDED

Friendly reception, escorted while choosing site. Medium size park nicely shaded by palms and other trees. Small pets welcomed. Many sites separated by hibiscus hedges. Large sites, many of them drive-through, power and good water, also camp sites. Excellent pool, campers kitchen, barbecue area. Disabled facilities. $20 for 2A good value, 7 nights for $100 even better. Suitable for extended stay.
Likes: closeness to beach, peaceful atmosphere.
Dislikes: piped radio in amenities

Atherton Caravan Park & Holiday Units, Atherton
Take the Yungaburra Road from Atherton and the park is on the left approximately 11kms from Yungaburra town. 3km East of PO on Gordonvale (Cairns) Road, last left after 100 km/h sign before open farmland heading towards Yungaburra. Ph: 07 4091 1099. All pets allowed.
Manager's name is Norma. This could be a nice park. We had pre-booked for a week giving measurements of the van and were surprised when we arrived that the sites were not numbered and management had no idea what sites were vacant. Pre booking does not mean that you'll fit! We were offered no help in finding a site or in getting in. We found one that was suitable by walking around. Three of the four power points did not work although this was fixed four days after we arrived. There are not enough bins so rubbish was overflowing after one day and they are located are a long way from most sites. The management reported after an earlier review, that this problem had been fixed but it is still a problem because of the shortage of bins! The soap containers that were in the bathroom block were empty the whole week of our stay. Grass was cut but not raked so that amenities block was always appearing dirty even though it was cleaned once a day. Beware of parking under the tall trees; drops berries and leaves on the unit so that it is noisy at night. We had to move forward on the second day to prevent this. On the plus side there are nice new cabins and a garden down the fence line is being constructed. Nice pool area. The sites are mostly level and on grass but some of the concrete slabs are broken and a long way out of the ground. There is room for a couple of big rigs. Washing machines are cheap at $2 but had to be cleaned before use. No night lighting but we like this compared to having bright lights shining all night so that you have to shut up. The few permanents, while some dwellings look untidy, are a friendly & quiet lot. We did enjoy our weeks stay, but more fastidious campers probably would not. Dog friendly & lots of room at the back of the park and on the aerodrome road for them to run.

Manager's name is Lorna Karamujic. The management is very helpful and friendly, the park is perfect for big rigs as they are drive throughs. The grounds are very well maintained, plenty of shade over the pool area, shrubs and trees between each site. Also there is an undercover bbq area, which is quite a good size. The laundry is plenty large enough and the kids have a whole paddock to play cricket as did a few families over Xmas. Very good management. Very good value for money. Good amenities. Very good sites Laundry, van parking by management. Good atmosphere to park. Clean UC gas bbq. Very good pool. Suitable for month or longer, suitable for families, the park was well maintained.
Date 12/2007. Park Rating 4: We have been here 6 weeks now and intend to stay for at least 3-4 months.
Report submitted by Robyn Ingram.

Manager's name is Lorna Karamujic. Wouldn't stay again. Unfriendly staff, due to the very poor greeting we received on arrival (we were not expected even though we had booked a week before) and the downright rudeness from the husband. Price was as expected, poor value for money ($20 2A per night powered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, cleanliness was below average, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, average sized sites, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Basic laundry, no rec room. Quiet, claustrophobic park due to the height and closeness of the surrounding shrubs at the site, not enough shade over tourist sites. Dirty bbq, no playground. Clean pool is open to sun.
Dislikes: Toilet not cleaned some days while we were there, rubbish bins allowed to overflow, office unattended for hours with no notice given.
Parking: Limited room while booking in except for street.
Local Information: There is a lot to do and see in and around Atherton so allow heaps of time. The climate is less oppressive than the coast so you just feel like doing more.
Roads: We took Palmerston Highway from Innisfail which was steep in sections but O.K, take it easy though as there are very few places for cars to pass and there is a lot to see!
Date 09/2006. Park Rating 1: Suitable for overnighter.
Report submitted by The Polter Geist.

There was a problem with overflowing rubbish bins but that has been rectified ages ago. The Council collects the rubbish twice a week. We have newly renovated amenities which are now cleaned daily.

Pleasant park with lots of plants and trees. Large new camp kitchen being built. The toilet block was large with good sized shower and toilet cubicles. The park is very well maintained and clean. If you are not good at backing, check out your site first as some sites looked difficult to get into. Staff were pleasant and happy to answer our travel questions. We'd stay again. $27 per night less BIG4 discount.

Halloran's Leisure Park, Atherton
Just off Highway 1, south of the town. If travelling from the north turn left at the post office roundabout and drive about 2kms. Ph: 07 4091 4144. This park has the potential to be a top park; Spacious (huge drive-thru sites), well-maintained, a good location to tour the Tablelands, rural views from most sites, internet access (including broadband laptop access), small, but attractive, pool, two amenity blocks for each sex, two laundries, small camp-kitchen, coin in slot electric bbqs, small playground for small children, tourist information. Staff: average friendliness and helpfulness. A few, friendly, permanents. When you walk into the amenities you are struck by the neat, clean-looking tiling etc but: the shower floors are slate. They look nice but I wonder about the hygienic properties, no shelf, in the shower recess, on which to place belongings, and, in the men's, no soap dish or rack. Showers had good water pressure and were quite roomy. No paper towels or hot air blower. Whoever was responsible for placing the toilet rolls on the vertical dispenser didn't bother to check which way they were inserted and it was frequently very difficult to extract toilet paper. These few negatives spoilt the overall effect of the park. With a little attention these could be improved. No dump point and a ban on using toilets for dumping was no real problem as there was an excellent dump point in town. Tariff was reasonable with Senior's Discount. Suitable for anyone to use as a base for seeing the Tableland. We stayed for four nights.

Bruce Highway, 7kms south of Cairns. Ph: 07 4054 6644 or 1800 636 622. BIG4 member. No pets.
This is a resort type facility with all you could expect for a long stay. Very friendly and helpful staff - the best we have encountered - and equal to those in Airlie Beach. Lots of assistance with what to do in Cairns. A personalised trip around the park on arrival in a buggy to explain the park layout and facilities. During the high season at $45 a night (weekly rate) for two adults, powered site, you pay for the privilege but it did not disappoint. On 1st September the rate dropped to $36.90 a night (off season). Pool activities like introductory snorkelling and aerobics, a well appointed kitchen that provides meals or takeaways, a small shop and pancakes once a week. The gardens and sites were immaculate with flat sites, concrete aprons and well planned shrubbery giving some privacy. The amenities were good, cleaned regularly and close to most sites. This is a family friendly park (but the family will need to pay). We loved the Great Barrier Reef with the snorkelling very easy and spectacular, the SkyRail was a good day (but the shops in the town up the top are very touristy), a flight to The Top (Cape York) was long but needed to be done and the Tablelands is worth a couple of days. Lots of tour options; Cairns is very commercialised, but you can make anything of it. Most tour operators pick up from outside the Park and there is a courtesy bus that does a loop of the city three times a day. Good dump point but located a long way down the back of the park (at least it is away from other caravans, but you might need to put the container in the car unless you want some exercise). It is close to the Bruce Highway and there is a train track at the rear of the Park - whilst there is some noise occasionally, it is low level. There are bbq facilities with seating dotted around the park. One of the best parks, and one of the most expensive, we have stayed in, after 7 years of touring. We would come back if we ever face up to the long haul from Adelaide again.

Cairns Villa and Leisure Park, Cairns
28 Pease Street, Manunda. Ph: 07 4053 7133. No pets.
Close to everything and easy to get to. Well located about 5kms from the city centre with a frequent bus service from a stop outside the gate, this park has mainly cabins and permanents, with a limited number of tourist sites. The roadways are very narrow and, for the first time in over 100 parks, I had difficulty getting my 25ft Heritage on site. Although a high price (over $30 per night) the amenities have a 'run-down' appearance with cracked toilet bowls, split seats, doors that won't close properly and tiles without grouting. The park has a generally attractive appearance with lots of mature trees and shrubs with the gardens beds and lawns being well-maintained. The camp-kitchen and laundries are very well equipped. The pool is sparklingly clean and the free barbecues are spotless. But, during our two week stay (We booked and paid in advance), the amenities were not cleaned every day, in fact sometimes went two or three days without being cleaned. When I asked about a dump-point I was told there was one but it wasn't safe to use and to use the toilet to dump. Apart from the amenities it is an excellent park so it depends on how fastidious you are about clean toilets and showers as to whether you should stay here.

An attractive park with lots of trees, mainly palms, and shrubs. Each site is separated from its neighbours by attractive plantings. The sites vary in size, most have concrete pads and room to park your car. Roadways are mainly concrete, fairly wide but in need of a bit of repair in places. The two amenity blocks are cleaned daily, although not always at the same time. Once a week during our stay the amenities were given an 'extra-special' clean with the walls scrubbed, shower curtains changed etc. There is a good-sized laundry and plenty of washing line. The pool is kept beautifully clear and sparkling and there are timber lounges on the surrounding lawn. There are two barbecue areas, one next to the pool with two free gas barbecues and under cover tables. The second one includes the camp kitchen and has three free gas barbecues, gas cook- tops, microwave etc. and plenty of seating. Wireless internet is available, at a fee, but the signal is not obtainable over the whole park, you have to find a good spot. There is a small children's playground, a creek, which meanders along two sides of the park. The garbage bins are emptied every day and, apart from the roadways, the park is well-maintained, Staff are friendly and helpful. Tour booking is available and dogs are welcome. Ideal for a lengthy stay.

Likes: This park was cut out of rainforest retaining as many trees as possible - ancient figs and mature palms (the coconuts were removed early in the season). There was plenty of shade beneath glorious foliage filled with birds. The Freshwater Creek meanders around two sides of the park and it abounds with fish and turtles, which visitors could feed. In nearly three years travelling we feel this park leaves the rest for dead - and we've been back three times! The park has a relaxed and natural feel. The receptionist as friendly and helpful and the reception area walls were not cover in prohibition notices, rather information on what you could do. The sealed roadways took you safely to your neat site with a concrete annexe pad, convenient power and water supply and sullage disposal. The park has a lovely pool and spa with tables, chairs and barbecues adjacent under a thatched roof. The camp kitchen had all the usual facilities and the clean gas barbecues were free. Small and docile dogs are welcome and there's a council park a short walk along the creek where there's a dog exercise area with poly bags provided free. Amenities were excellent; they were clean, had good ventilation and the WCs had toilet brushes. The showers had mops and the basins soft soap and paper towels. Other parks had some of these supplied, but very rarely all of them. The park is ten minutes drive from the centre of the city but only five minutes from two good shopping centres. There was a bottle shop and (new) video store right next door. We really liked all the staff in the park - they try so hard. Going back to Cool Waters was like going home, only better.
Parking: No. There's a car/caravan bay right outside reception with room for two or three to queue if necessary.
Added Touches: Every Sunday evening, free entertainment of excellent quality was provided. A stack of pizzas (we counted 140 one night) was delivered at about 6:30 and for $5 (which goes to charity) you eat all you want. One weekday morning each week, free Devonshire Teas were provided in the camp kitchen with tea or coffee. Any donation goes to Cancer Research.
Local Information: There are no water restrictions in Cairns. Just a short drive to the 'must do' Skyrail and Scenic Railway up to Kuranda; go up on one, come back on the other. Drive up the twisting road to the Copperlode Dam. Visit Lake Placid and the Cascades. Book a cruise to the Reef. Visit two excellent social clubs with cheap meals just five minutes away. Visit the Atherton Tablelands or any of a multitude of beaches. Walk the Red Track or the Blue Track from near the Botanical Gardens. The possibilities are limitless using Cool Waters as a base.
Roads: Roads all excellent.

The park is situated in an appealing area, close to a rainforest and mountain range. It is however about 15 mins drive from the CBD. Sites are reasonably large, and separated with garden trees etc. The gardens are quite nice. The ablutions block is clean and even has fresh flowers. On arrival we were given a warm and friendly greeting, which makes a difference. Quiet & peaceful park with tropical surrounds very close to city centre (closest?). Some permanents at back of park. $28 2A less TT discount on powered site with slab. We thought this was reasonable value for Cairns at Easter. Amenities block was reasonable. Park was almost empty due to the previous cyclones. When full accessing the sites could be difficult. They are angled to the road which has a dead-end. One would need to reverse down the road & then reverse into the site.
Likes: Close to city & much cheaper than popular BIG4 at approach to Cairns.

Manager's name is Paul Weise. The location of the park will offset any disadvantages you might find. You need to book well in advance (two years in advance if you want to be there during the winter peak season) as there are a lot of people who return every year. We paid $36 for a beach front site but prices vary depending on where you are placed. The park would love to have more sites but there is not enough room. A very basic camp kitchen but it was clean. Friendly staff, good staff response to complaints, van parking assistance provided by staff, staff helped us at the site, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was lower than expected, very good value for money ($36 2A per night powered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to all sites, were clean, condition is very good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, dry change area, paper towels/dryer provided, exhaust fans/good ventilation. A great location - right on the beach at Palm Cove - close to hotels, shops etc.(probably only a 2 minute walk). Council owned - could be a great park if only the council would spend some money. Average staff friendliness, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was lower than expected, good value for money ($22 2A per night, shoulder season). Poor laundry, no rec room. Quiet, claustrophobic park, not enough shade, a few permanents. No bbqs, no playground, no pool. Suitable for few days.
Likes: The fantastic location.

Likes: Fantastic location only metres to the beach. Staff were very friendly and knowledgeable of the area and things to do. Amenities were cleaned several times a day. It was a very quiet and relaxing location - 3 night stay quickly turned into 5 nights. Although price was a little on the high side it was worth the money for the peaceful surroundings.
Dislikes: Each amenities block (2 of) had only 2 toilets and 2 showers (1 men and 1 women). Most sites didn't have any shade until late afternoon.
Local Information: Cape Tribulation is a must see for everyone. It is a little piece of paradise that hasn't really been affected by commercialisation. We will definitely be returning.

We found this to be a nice park in a good location. It is across the road from the beach and is within walking distance to town. There was very little highway noise experienced. Whilst our site was drive through some sites would be difficult to negotiate into when the park is full. There were two amenity blocks and both were clean and well presented at the time of our visit. This park runs between the beach and Bruce Highway on northern side of Cardwell and consists of caravan park, motel units and backpacker accommodation. The backpacker accommodation is on the highway side of the complex so shields the caravan sites from highway noise.
Beach frontage. This park is in a very central position and an easy walk to the shops. The access is actually down a side street and not on the street front of the highway. If you miss a turn the next one will get you around the block to the entrance. The cost is $25/2A, which is reasonable value for money. However no assistance offered to park and no tourist information offered either. There is a $20 deposit for cable TV and five channels are available. There is a nice covered pool, which is kid safe. Didn't notice a play area for children. The camp kitchen is a bit rundown and very untidy. Average amenities. Ladies amenities floor was awash with water following daily servicing. This could become quite dangerous and slippery. No ensuites. There is no paved or sealed access between caravan parking rows, only grass. Quite a haphazard siting of van sites and manoeuvring required more than normal space and time. Dog friendly park. Average management. Park atmosphere was okay. Dogs allowed.
Likes: Closeness to beachfront and walk to town. There is a bistro on site mainly patronised by motel patrons.
Dislikes: The difficulty in getting a van into any site because of the closeness between unmarked rows.
Parking: No parking area outside the park, just drive in and wait in front of reception

Manager's name is Dianne and Vernon, and friends. The park is run by Vernon and Dianne and friends and is quite simply magnificent in most ways. Apparently in times past this was not the best park on the block, but be assured that as of September 2007 there are not too many as good. These current operators are pleasant driven people to present the best park of which they are capable and in fact have already won 2 or 3 awards for excellence. They have plans to improve already very good facilities and you will not find a camp kitchen of a higher standard. There is a very nice, safe pool with wonderful tropical gardens and good sites with mostly grassed sites with slabs. Fishery falls is quite convenient to Cairns and is a practical place to use as a base to check out this part of the world. In a word, this park is too good to pass. No we are not connected to this park, just very happy customers. If you think you may be worried about noise from the highway in this case forget it. We heard nothing in over a weeks stay. Very friendly staff, good staff response to complaints, staff offered tourist advice, van parking assistance provided by staff, staff helped us at the site, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, very good value for money ($24 2A per night powered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, paper towels/dryer provided, exhaust fans/good ventilation. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, concrete annex slabs, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Likes: Gardens, grass, barby area/camp kitchen, staff, walk to Fishery Falls at the back of the park (beautiful), quiet pub next door for meals if you want, a good base for the area.
Parking: A noticeably good sized parking area, much bigger than most I have seen.

Tiny park in northern end of the town (however everything is within walking distance in Chillagoe). Quite a shady place, with below-average friendliness, a restaurant which we didn't try. A poor Galah in a cage sadly watched his mates flying around outside. We'd not stay again - there are better parks in Chillagoe. Poor management. Average amenities, close to sites. Poor sites, lighting at night was adequate, the site size was okay, kiosk. Park atmosphere was okay, quiet
Likes: shady and quiet but then, Chillagoe is a quiet place.
Dislikes: small sites, staff not friendly, no atmosphere.
Parking: it's a tiny park, we parked outside and walked in

Dislikes: $5.00 charge to use hose to wash car (No car washing permitted on site) even though there are no water restrictions

We really enjoyed our stay at this park. Three swimming pools and a large camp kitchen added to our enjoyment. Our site was grassed and large, amply big enough for caravan, annex and vehicle. The staff were friendly and helpful – our gas bottle was returned to the caravan after refilling. The toilet block consists of large individual bathrooms and seemed to be sufficient for an almost full park. Everything was clean and well maintained. The cabins looked very new and attractive and the park is planted with a good selection of tropical plants and trees making a very pleasant environment. Not particularly well signposted but Cooktown is small enough to find the park reasonably easily. $33 per night less BIG4 discount.

Manager's name is Terry & Jan Martin. This was one of the best parks we have ever stayed in anywhere in Australia, the best in the town. The park is very roomy, big flat sites. No permanents. We were there in late October, early November and we had the park to ourselves. Most of the tourists had left to avoid the wet season, which was still weeks away. It is very shady and reasonably sheltered from the strong winds, which blow every day in Cooktown. The staff were wonderful, very helpful and full of local information. The toilet block was all ensuites, so it was great to have privacy all the time. Adequate for the busy season too. They were kept spotless and were quite close to our site. There are lots of mango trees and the staff told us to pick up any mangoes on the ground to eat, we enjoyed many meals with mangoes for desert. There are 3 pools, all beautifully maintained, with lovely gardens, and lots of furniture to use. Next to the main pool is a huge new camp kitchen with new appliances, a big plasma TV, and free BBQ's. There was an area to wash cars, a shop and many other great facilities. The staff had many suggestions for sightseeing and places to eat in. Cooktown is unspoiled by too many tourists, a great place to visit for a few days and relax. We would have liked to stay much longer but we were on a tight schedule. We have submitted this report because many people in the last few months have asked us about Cooktown and a good place to stay. Many have been unaware that there is a now a new sealed road north of Port Douglas that goes inland all the way to Cooktown, about 350 kms. It is a great road to drive on with great scenery. We were surprised at the amenities in the park for such a remote area, and there is so much to see around Cooktown even thought it is a small town. Quite a historical place. There is also internet access for those who need it. It is a very peaceful, quiet park and we would love to visit again one day. Seating around the pool was provided.
Local Information: Captain Cook museum well worth a visit, also great hills around town for views over the whole area, botanical gardens with lots of wild life such as wallabies, interesting beach areas to visit, Endeavour Falls north of the town. Always very windy, interesting shops.

Cooktown Orchid Travellers Park, Cooktown
Corner Charlotte and Walker Streets. Turn left onto Walker Street, the park is at the end of Walker Street on the right hand side on the corner of Charlotte Street. Ph: 07 4069 6400. All pets allowed.
We only stayed here because it was in town and takes pets. Average staff friendliness. Price was higher than expected, reasonable value for money ($26 2A per night powered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, cleanliness was average, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, dry change area, paper towels/dryer provided. Inadequate number of tourist sites, some unlevel sites, poor night lighting, small sites, hard to negotiate into site, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Good laundry, no rec room. Quiet, claustrophobic park, not enough shade. Clean UC electric bbq (pay), dismal bbq area atmosphere. The BBQs had a coin slot but we couldn't see how much they were charging, the cost had rubbed off, we didn't use them, they looked clean. No playground. Clean pool is open to the sun, kid-safe pool area. Suitable for few days.
Dislikes: Park needs some attention
Parking: Park outside office on left, however there is not much room
Local Information: Good food at reasonable prices at RSL and Bowling Club. Short walk to wharf and other eating places. The pub opposite has live music on a Friday night til about 11.30pm, you may need earplugs.

A small park, in a great position in the main street, within walking distance of most attractions. Managers are friendly. Amenities small but in good condition. Only three showers for each sex but they are roomy and have a good strong flow of water. Camp kitchen/BBQ area under cover. A sparkling clean pool. No games room or playground so possibly not really suitable for families. We enjoyed a week there and consider it would be suitable for almost anybody, excepting families, for any length of time. Just one word of caution though: Sandflies

Peninsula Caravan Park, Cooktown
Into Cooktown, turn right at Caltex service station, Howard Street to end into park. Ph: 07 4069 5107. Dogs on leash.
We could not recommend this park. Cooktown is a high wind area and there are massive trees over most sites which can and do drop their limbs. Our car was damaged by a falling branch at our site making for a very expensive stay. The park advertisements state "no midges", but we found this not to be the case. Many of the sites were very difficult to negotiate into due to the narrow roads and the large trees. The amenity block was modern and clean but had poor ventilation. Average staff friendliness, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was much higher than expected, poor value for money ($30.00 2A per night powered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, cleanliness was average, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, dry change area, paper towels/dryer provided, disabled facilities. Adequate number of tourist sites, some unlevel sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, concrete annex slabs, hard to negotiate into site, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Basic laundry. Quiet, claustrophobic park, too much shade. Wood bbq (free). Basic playground in average condition. Clean pool is open to the sun, kid-safe pool area, tables and chairs provided.
Dislikes: We disliked camping under huge trees and felt the area was unsafe during our stay. Midges at the park.
Parking: Room to park outside the office.
Local Information: Cooktown is a very interesting town from a historical perspective. There are two excellent museums.
Roads: Very good bitumen road from Mareeba to Cooktown.

Friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice. Price was as expected, good value for money ($20 2A per night unpowered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is very good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, dry change area, paper towels/dryer provided, exhaust fans/good ventilation, disabled facilities. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, large sites. Good laundry, very good camp kitchen, kiosk. Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere, no permanents. Clean UC gas bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. No pool. Suitable for a week or more, well maintained park.
Likes: Tidy, well maintained and cared for caravan and camping park. Amenity blocks were brilliant with added touches like extra hooks, shelves and towel rails. All up to date and spotlessly clean. Some sites terraced to take advantage of the views.
Added Touches: Camp kitchen is modern with modern gas barbeques, gas hotplates, 2 sink units, large fridge, toaster, electric kettle. Large tables and benches for eating.
Local Information: Although a short drive to local magnificent beaches, the location of this park is perfect for a Daintree holiday. The peace, wildlife and scenery was wonderful.

Cowley Beach Caravan Park, Cowley Beach
Turn off Bruce Highway approx 20Km South of Inisfail. Ph: 07 4065 4806. Pets at manager's discretion.
Manager's name is John and Julie. This is a quiet little van park with few cabins. There are just a couple of en-suite sites, around 40 powered sites and quite a few unpowered sites. At least one row of sites has absolute beachfront views. Water is not potable and should be boiled before use. Otherwise the park is very pleasant with adequate shade, friendly staff, has a small kiosk/shop that serves evening meals, seconds from the beach and 15 minutes from a creek for the fishos amongst us. Friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice, van parking assistance provided by staff. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($28 2A per night, powered, peak season). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, paper towels/dryer provided, exhaust fans/good ventilation, disabled facilities. Adequate number of tourist sites, some level sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, no sites with concrete annex slabs, shade to some sites, poor water quality, adequate taps close by. Basic laundry, no rec room, late checkout allowed (up to noon), good camp kitchen, kiosk, car wash, dump point, van parking. Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, no permanents. Clean UC gas bbq, congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting. No playground, no pool. Suitable for few days.
Likes: Beautiful beach right alongside the park. You are allowed to wash vehicles and vans. Very quiet. Many guests are repeat visitors who come for months at a time and socialise with each other (quietly).
Dislikes: No potable water. Some sites have quite a slope to them (though most are OK).
Parking: Not really, but only one car and van combo can enter the waiting area at a time.
Added Touches: Fish cleaning table. Boat ramp right next door.
Local Information: Many opportunities for land and boat based fishos. Nice pub not too far away at El Arish. Almost rural setting - the town is very small and quiet. Close to numerous tourist attractions in Innisfail area.
Roads: Road is bitumen and in reasonable condition but crosses the railway tracks for cane trains in many places - exercise caution.

Forrest Beach Hotel Caravan Park, Forrest Beach
Small coastal town 17 km from the sugar town of Ingham. 1 Ash Street. Ph: 07 4777 8700. Signposted at Ingham. Turn toward coast on northern outskirts of Ingham. Pets at manager's discretion, on leash.
Park is run as part of the hotel/motel operation and seems rather a poor cousin of same. The hotel has recently been redeveloped by new owners. This included building a deck area where the pool used to be - no pool now. Plans were to build a resort on caravan area, but this has so far been shelved. The caravan park office has been closed, and it can be hard, if arriving before hotel opens at 11am, to find someone to book you in. Fees for powered site, 2 adults, are $25 per night but the weekly rate is a very reasonable $150. There are 25 sites with slabs, site size ranges from just adequate to very spacious. There are 5 extra grassed sites. The power is not working to some sites, so a very long power lead is needed for those. The amenities seem to have had a fresh coat of paint but otherwise are run down. Only 3 of the 5 toilets in ladies are working. Cleaning is done daily, but is superficial e.g. soap holders in showers are not wiped, dirty marks remain on walls, dirt build up in corners. There is obvious smell from septic/sewer. There are 4 washing machines in the laundry, and 2 driers, but very inadequate clothes lines. Most people seem to rig their own drying lines. The location is superb, right by an excellent beach, and one puts up with the seediness for this. It seems the majority of occupants had come for lengthy periods and return each year. We stayed longer than intended, because the beach and bush setting were so pleasant. There are several signs asking campers not to empty cassettes etc in the toilets, but I would have liked to also see signs asking dog owners to clean up after their pets - too many left piles in the grassed area designated for tents.

We've stayed at this park frequently since 1999. It now has new owners and they've moved most of the permanents out (the wisdom of which is open to debate as the long-termers were never a problem and actually contribute to the overall friendly feel of the park). Curiously, the jump in price to $25.00 per night (powered) is not linked to any improvement in caravan park facilities - the hotel side has been revamped but the park is clearly on the "back burner". The main feature of the place is the location - absolute beachfront - and the fact that they still allow dogs. Average staff friendliness. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($25.00 2A per night, powered, peak season). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, cleanliness was average, condition is poor, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, small sites, concrete annex slabs to some sites, shade to some sites, adequate taps close by. Basic laundry, no rec room. Peaceful, open & roomy park, no permanents. No playground, no pool. Suitable for overnighter.
Likes: Access to a great beach. Dog friendly. Other customers were friendly.
Dislikes: One usually expects the increase in prices to match some completed improvements - the ablutions block appears to be adhering to some mystical heritage style listing as it seems untouched in ten years!

We first stayed here in 1997 and we keep coming back (This time we drove over 6,000 kms round trip to stay here). This park is part of a pub/motel/caravan park complex. Very friendly and absolute beach front (you have about 20 metres from the nearest site to a long, dog friendly beach). Very friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was lower than expected, very good value for money ($18.50 2A per night powered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to all sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, concrete annex slabs. Basic laundry. Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere. A congenial bbq area. No pool.
Likes: The beach is ideal for walking the dogs. Usual warnings about stingers in summer but there is a section that is netted during the season. A wonderful unique park that is really worth the drive.
Local Information: Ingham is the centre for the annual Italian Festival (May, I think). Good shopping centre and an easy day trip to Cairns or Townsville.

Mountain View Lake Holiday Park, Giru
Coming from north (Townsville) right turn off the Bruce Highway after the Palm Creek Bridge. From the south (Giru) it is about seven kilometres north along the Bruce Highway from the last turnoff into Giru township. About 1.5 kilometres of gravel road (reasonable condition) from highway into the park proper. Dogs on leash. From the outset it should be understood that this park classifies itself as an "eco" park and while they allow dogs, they are absolutely set in their requirements that the dogs be kept leashed/contained at all times. The park is home to large numbers of wallabies and other wildlife. The management also set out strict rules on noise and behaviour. All of these issues contribute to a quiet and peaceful stay. Average staff friendliness, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was lower than expected ($16.00 2A per night, peak season). Inadequate number of amenities, are close to all sites, cleanliness was average, condition is poor, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, no sites with concrete annex slabs, shade to some sites, drive-through sites. Basic laundry. Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere, No permanents. No playground, no pool. Suitable for a week or more.
Likes: About thirty minutes to Townsville CBD. Cheap as chips.
Dislikes: Serious lack of toilets and showers. The 2+2 (showers/toilet cubicles), at least in the male side, makes this park best suited to vans with onboard facilities.
Roads: The dirt driveway from the Bruce Highway should not deter, however the 40 kph speed limit needs to be respected to avoid stones being tossed about and your van covered in dust.

Likes: Very roomy amenities.
Local Information: Town was built for nickel mine and when mine closed town died but all infrastructure left. Pub is easy walk and does good (big) meals

This is a very quiet small Council park. The amenities are very old but very clean. The young couple who have the lease on the park are very nice (not sure of their names). The council pool is next door and has free entry for caravan park guests. A lot of travellers would consider this to be just an overnight stop. However we were here in 2008 and stayed a week at a cost of $85.00 for 7 nights. This year we are only staying 3 nights at a cost of $20.00 per night but I am sure they would have a deal for 7 nights. It is a very grassy park as there are no water restrictions here. The sites (mainly drive through) are quite level, the park is well lit at night, water pressure good, paper towels provided in the amenities. There is a free gas bbq and a gas ring at the front of the park (no camp kitchen). We would recommend this park as a place to just chill out if travellers need a rest. There is not a lot in the town but Foodworks and IGA Supermarkets are here as well as a hot bread shop. The pub down on the corner has very good pub meals at very reasonable prices.

Local Information: Tyto Wetlands is great for bird and wallaby watching. Crystal Creek and Paluma in the Paluma Range National Park definitely worth a visit. Girringun National Park has a good BBQ area near the Bangurru Walk (a nice stroll to Stony Creek with lots of turtles to be seen along the way) and Wallaman Falls was spectacular - the highest drop waterfall in Australia. The Jinda walk to the base of the falls is worth the trip but has a very steep ascent.

Lovely Park, very shady. Dogs welcome on leash. Beautiful beaches. My children had a lot of fun. Fishing across the road, swimming in the very clean swimming pool and playing mini golf. We did enjoy our stay its a nice place perfect for children. Very friendly staff were very helpful, good staff response to complaints, staff offered tourist advice, van parking assistance provided by staff, staff helped us at the site, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was higher than expected, poor value for money ($52 2A C4 per night powered). Rates were expensive, probably would be better to take a weeks stay rather than a few days as staying for a week works out around the same as staying for a few days. Amenity was fantastic, very clean and spacious, number would not cope in peak times, are close to most sites, condition is very good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Sites were nice, but inadequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, average sized sites, concrete annex slabs, hard to negotiate into site. Good laundry, late checkout allowed (up to noon). Basic rec room, was good but could do with an upgrade. Camp kitchen could also do with an upgrade. Peaceful, claustrophobic park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere. Clean UC gas bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting. There is one BBQ area which is enormous but was always taken when we needed it, the other two didn't have seating which was a bit of a let down. No playground. This park is probably OK when it is not busy. However, during our stay it was full including the unpowered section. The three shower/toilets for men and similar for women were grossly inadequate as they had to service the backpacker rooms as well as the RV travellers. During peak times the water supply ran out and toilets could only be flushed by buckets. Other travellers informed us that this is a regular event in peak times. Average staff friendliness, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, poor value for money ($24.00 2A per night powered). Amenities are close to most sites, were dirty, condition is poor, soap provided, paper towels/dryer provided. Clean heated pool is shaded, kid-safe pool area, tables and chairs provided, toddlers catered for. Suitable for overnighter.
Likes: The six heated spa pools were good - all at different temperatures and free to park residents. However, you can purchase a day pass to access these without staying in the park.
Dislikes: Amenities are grossly inadequate during busy times.
Parking: Just park outside office. Plenty of room.
Local Information: You don't have to stay in the caravan park to have a hot spa as the creek next door is fed by a running hot thermal spring. It was quite clean during our stay.

A very pleasant park, one of our favourites, with the attraction of six thermal pools, each at different temperatures for visitors enjoyment, set in attractive surrounds. The park also has fuel, meals (eat in or take-away), basic supplies, post office, camp kitchen and massage studio. If you are thinking of visiting and having a massage it would be advisable to book ahead as there are only limited times for this service. Amenities are old, but clean and, probably, not adequate when the park is full. No TV or mobile phone reception. Ideal for overnight or a few days relaxation.

Manager's name is Brian and Julie. I would think that Brian and Julie already have their finger on the pulse even though they have only been there for eight weeks. Brian in particular was quick to help with levelling our rig. We thoroughly enjoyed our peaceful two night stay. The big bonus is that you have a balcony restaurant on site, looking out over a wallaby park, serving up meals with plenty of choice, plenty of substance, and plenty of good service. How about a filling three course meal with a glass of wine thrown in for just $25? Can't complain! Friendly staff, staff explained park layout and facilities. Manager's name is D Copeland. Definitely book ahead for this park in peak time. Park is part of the hotel and motel, there are 65 sites. It is right on the beautiful beachfront, there are 8 beachfront sites that are booked all the time. We had a grassed site near the motel and pool, unfortunately a tour group was at motel and were noisy very early and very late. There was no problem with the hotel. The beach is beautiful for long walks and lovely warm swims once the tide is in! The atmosphere of this park could be improved by a friendlier attitude of the regulars that are there for an extended time. Average staff friendliness. Price was higher than expected, reasonable value for money ($30 2A per night, powered, peak season). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to only some sites, were clean, condition is very good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, dry change area, paper towels/dryer provided. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, average sized sites, concrete annex slabs to some sites, very few sites are shaded, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Good laundry, good camp kitchen, dump point. Noisy, open & roomy park, not enough shade. Clean UC bbq, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. No playground. Clean pool is open to sun, kid-safe pool area, tables and chairs provided. Suitable for month or longer, well maintained park.

Local Information: A lot of natural attractions nearby. Paronella Park, Dunk Island, Tully falls and white water rafting, Josephine Falls & The Boulders, sugar museum at Innisfail, a very good spot to explore surrounding areas including Mission Beach. Walk out to offshore reef at low tide. Lovely beach 100m away. Popular fishing location. Short walk to King Reef pub. Even shorter walk to fish shop for fresh caught local fish. Makes a good base for trips to Silkwood and other beaches i.e. Mission Beach.

Nice tidy park, most sites with slabs, some a little tight and would be difficult to negotiate when park full. Friendly staff. Good laundry, no rec room, good camp kitchen, kiosk, dump point. Quiet, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere, no permanents. Clean UC gas bbq (free), bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. Clean pool is open to sun, kid-safe pool area. Suitable for a week or more, suitable for families, well maintained park, park is considered kid-safe.
Likes: Close to beach, well kept lawns and gardens, clean amenities
Dislikes: No plan of park in office and no direction given, told to pick a site "but these may be taken" and then they are not sure if you can have that site it may be booked? Sites are only just big enough to fit vehicle beside pad if using annex (but bigger than some we have visited). Thought kiosk could have been stocked better as there are no shops in the vicinity. Not much in the way of tourist information.
Parking: You may check if you have large boats.
Roads: Good road bitumen all the way.

Lakeland Caravan Park, Lakeland

Friendly staff. Price was higher than expected, poor value for money ($25 2A per night, peak season). Inadequate number of amenities, are close to most sites, were dirty, condition is poor, water pressure is good, there was inadequate hot water. Some level sites, small sites, concrete annex slabs to some sites, shade to some sites. Poor laundry, no rec room. Quiet. No pool.
Dislikes: The shower had holes in the bottom of the wall and the water ran out of the holes and onto the footpath outside, they where dirty with mould around the holes and up the walls, the shower heads where at just above chest height and there wasn't enough hot water. There was a mop to clean the floors that appeared to have the same growth on it that the walls had! I couldn't wait to get out of here, thank goodness they only took cash as payment and we only booked for one night! I would never stay here again.

Paronella Park Caravan Park, Mena Creek
Next door to the famous Paronella Park. From the Bruce Highway, easy to find: from the south turn left at Silkwood and follow the road, the park is on the right, about 200 metres past the Mena Creek Hotel. From the north follow the signs from Innisfail, follow the road and park is on the left, about 17kms along. Japoonvale Road (Old Bruce Highway), 19km South of Innisfail. Ph: 07 4065 3225. Dog friendly.

Of course the main reason most people would stay at this caravan park is to visit the fascinating Paronella Park. The caravan park is small, only 15 powered sites and a few tent sites, but is very attractive, surrounded by dense tropical flora. Most sites have a concrete slab, some of which have seen better days. Sites vary in size and some are a bit tricky to get into and out of. We had no trouble getting our 25ft Heritage on site but had to do a bit of manoeuvring to exit. The amenities are old and shabby but very clean. (There is a notice proclaiming that new amenities are to be constructed soon.) The showers are spacious with a good strong flow of hot water. Soap and paper towels are provided at the wash basins. The small barbecue area is neat, clean and obviously well maintained with an excellent free gas barbecue. Staff are friendly and helpful but are mainly concerned with the operations of the main attraction and so no assistance given with parking. Entry to the actual park includes one night's site fee and each subsequent night costs $24. We stayed two nights and could quite easily have stayed longer. Suitable for one or more nights.

I would rate this park as one of the best we have stayed in, well equipped shop, fuel available at a very reasonable price, take away meals, great pool and camp kitchen, plenty of very clean showers and toilets, $3 washing machines, well kept grassy sites with concrete slab and room to put up annex and still park beside, lots of shade, quiet and close to restaurants, and at least 50m to the beach. Likes: We stayed at a time when we southerners appreciate Mission Beach and there are many who spend months there as we hope to do in future. The price may not suit everyone but we found those there to be a great bunch and many little "happy hours" seemed to happen spontaneously all across the park. A few things stand out as personal "likes": First there seemed to be few midges at dusk which is strange since the park is right across from the beach and that's unusual in FNQ. Then, the friendly way we were assisted into what was a tight site, could only be described as very welcoming.
Parking: There were a couple booking in when we arrived and as we had phoned ahead, we were taken straight to the site with a "Come back and pay us when you settle in" - nice touch!
Added Touches: The local surf club (or was it the Scouts?) ran a sausage sizzle one night a week that was a hit with many
Local Information: It doesn't get much better than Mission Beach with nice golden sand and the backdrop of Dunk Island about 5km offshore. Tully is a short drive away and apart from the small shops at Mission Beach there's a new Woolies about 6km away. Day trips to Dunk Island resort are a must but you'll need a tinnie for fishing.

This is a lovely park and many people stay for weeks on end. The park has immaculate grounds and is well maintained. At $36.90 after the Top Tourist discount it is not the cheapest but the well maintained facilities and location make it about right. It is on the main road in Mission Beach but it is not busy and any road noise is minimal. The facilities are older but still very functional. The actual shower is lovely with plenty of water and large overhead showerheads. The shower floors are stainless steel and in good condition. The showers and toilets are clean and recently painted but if they were upgraded this park would be a four to four and half star rating. There are good camp kitchens and common facilities. Flat sites, with concrete aprons, surrounded by manicured lawns and palms. Very pleasant tropical setting. Assistance was provided with manoeuvring onto the site which can be tight. A nice well used pool area. The park is well laid out and no permanents. A professional welcome, not particularly friendly, but OK. A nice little town with a few shops and ferry access to Dunk Island if you are into hiking or beaching. Good fishing from a tinnie out by Dunk. Overall we were very impressed with the feel of the park and only mildly disappointed with the age of the facilities. We would stay for a longer period if there is a next time.

Management friendly, amenities old but clean, though a bit small for the number of people here. The ambience of the place is high, with the beach so close, and Dunk Island a few Km offshore. No pets, good swimming pool, but the sites are the tightest I have seen for some time. Lots of sniggers from those already set up, as you try to slide the van in without damage or divorce, and then try to park the tow vehicle where it doesn't have to be shifted every time another van drives up the park street. Family friendly, lots of kids running around.
Dislikes: Sites too small. Amenities cleaning times 9-12 am, (checkout time 10:00, why can't parks leave cleaning till after people have got away).

Manager's name is Robert & Jennifer. We planned a trip to Cape York in our 4WD and were attracted by the offer of free van storage. Don't be put off by the entrance, which is via a couple of residences from the old mining village, which is the park's location. We were, and nearly drove straight out again until we met the owner, Robert, and knew we had nothing to worry about. As we were setting up he invited us to join him for an evening walk. This is free and comprises an informative chat in the office that gives the background and history of the area, followed by a walk around the old mining village and up to the top of a small hill for a great view of the surrounding countryside as the sun goes down. The man is a mine (excuse the pun) of information and a delightful and genuine person. We'd intended to stay a night, park the van in storage and be on our way. Instead we stayed almost a week. We stored the van and were away two weeks before returning to pick it up and leave the next day. Instead we stayed another week. This place grows on you! After returning from the Cape, we found excuses to drop back in twice for another few days as we explored Cooktown and the Daintree. Nothing is too much trouble. Want to vacuum the dust out of your car? Here, borrow our vacuum cleaner. Want to use the internet? Come into the office and I'll set it up for you. No charge. Want to trap Redclaw? Here, borrow my traps and I'll show you the way to the river. Mt Carbine looks dry and dusty but it's something of a sanctuary for wildlife and is inundated with birds (don't bring your cat). There are few of the trappings of resort parks so this is not one for the kids. It's more akin to a bush camp with facilities. It's inexpensive and you qualify for two free days after paying for five. When we stayed five and then returned, we still got the two freebies. Mt Carbine is not a destination, but it's surprising how many things there are to do in the district if you have a 4WD - just ask. It's also a great spot to just sit and share stories with like-minded travellers. Thoroughly recommended. Very friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice, van parking assistance provided by staff, staff helped us at the site, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was lower than expected, very good value for money ($80 2A per week powered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to all sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, paper towels/dryer provided, exhaust fans/good ventilation. Coming from Ravenshoe follow the Kennedy Highway through Mt Garnet and cross the bridge on the southern end of town. Turn right after crossing the bridge into Nymbool Road and travel a further 500 metres to find the caravan park on the right side of Nymbool Road. Ph: 07 4097 9335.
UPDATED REPORT NEEDED

We accidentally found this park after missing our desired turnoff. However, what a surprise. This park was well maintained and under new management and was in the process of being upgraded. The sites were very large and the bushland setting was great. Various kinds of birds were flying around and were quite friendly. Very friendly staff, no complaints, staff offered tourist advice, van parking assistance provided by staff, as well as help at the site and explaining park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, good value for money ($18 2A per night powered). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to most sites and in reasonable condition with good water pressure is good and adequate hot water, soap provided, dry change area, paper towels/dryer provided. Mostly level, large sites, good night lighting, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by. Good camp kitchen. Van parking. Peaceful, open and roomy, plenty of shade. Clean gas UC bbq (free), bbq area lighting and seating. No playground, no pool.
Likes: The friendly attitude of the manager impressed us. The site was in a bushland setting and was most peaceful and relaxing.
Dislikes: Not really a dislike, but a swimming pool at this park would certainly give it a higher rating.
Parking: Plenty of space to park the caravan whilst booking in.
Roads: A two lane highway extends from Ravenshoe to Mt Garnet, and a single lane road extends from Mt Garnet to the Lynd.
Park Rating 3.5: Suitable for a few days.

Bedrock Village Caravan Park, Mt Surprise
Mount Surprise is a tiny town on the Savannah Way, 320km south west of Cairns. The caravan park is on the right as you enter the town driving westwards. It is dog friendly and offers dog sitting for people going out for day trips. Garnet Road. Ph: 07 4062 3193.
Manager's name is Joe & Jo Lockyer. We booked ahead and arrived on a Thursday at 2pm, there were 6 vans in front of us waiting to be booked in. The park was very full and we were put at the very back of the park that has been extended. The sites are drive-thru and large and have a nice covering of grass. In a few more years the trees and shrubs between the sites will have grown and will provide better shade. The amenities for the newer sites is portable and there are two showers and four toilets in each, they do not cope in the busy periods. The amenities in the centre of the park are excellent. Park lighting is sparse but all the better to admire the star-show! We did a full day tour of the Undarra Lava Tubes that is run by the park owners, Joe and Jo, and it is one of the best tours we have ever done. Friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice, staff helped us at the site, staff explained park layout and facilities. Good value for money ($24 2A per night, powered, peak season). Amenities were clean.

The new amenities block, next to the camp-kitchen is complete and would be amongst the best, if not the best, of any we have used. Each cubicle, shower or toilet, has its own light switch. The toilet cubicles are spacious, each with an interesting 'bush poem' on the back of the door. The toilet paper is of good quality. The shower cubicles are the biggest we have seen with room for a chair and plenty of room for even the largest to dry themselves without knocking the walls. Water flow is very strong and hot. The whole area is tastefully decorated and has quality fixtures and fittings. To cope with demand Jo and Joe have increased the number of powered sites, installed more washing lines and washing machines. There are two new, free, gas BBQs and a wood-fired pizza oven. The previously used amenity blocks have been renovated. Satellite broadband internet is going to be installed at any time and they are hoping that a wireless system will be available in some form for patrons to use. The only negative I can offer about this park is the swimming pool. It's a good pool with sparkling clear water but on each of our three visits to the park, when we have used the pool, we have had to contend with the 'creepy-crawly', which seems to be a permanent fixture in the pool. Also there are no chairs or lounges around the pool, just a couple of log seats.

Joe and Jo Lockyer created this beautiful park themselves, shifting many tonnes of soil and rock and planting hundreds of trees and shrubs. It is a haven for wildlife, especially birds and, at least six varieties of butterfly, depending on the season. Most sites are drive-through and wide enough to comfortably extend your awning etc and are separated from its neighbours by plantings of trees and shrubs. Facilities include a swimming pool, camp kitchen, laundry, free gas barbecues, under cover, but outside, eating area, internet access (dial-up) with laptop connection option and TV lounge. A new amenities block was nearing completion during our most recent visit. Tours to surrounding scenic attractions are operated by Joe and Jo and, for dog owners, they will "keep an eye" on your dog while you are on the tours. Joe, Jo and staff are all very friendly and helpful. During the season evening meals (1 dish per night) are available at a reasonable cost.
Dislikes: The toilet paper has the texture of fine sand-paper. Hopefully the new amenities will have a better quality product.

The owners are enthusiastic and very helpful. They have spent about 10 years building their park from scratch (bedrock). The park is well laid out with good shade, grassed sites (depending on the season) and good amenities. Many sites are drive through and very spacious. The atmosphere is quiet and friendly. The owners run tours to the Undara Lava Tubes and to Cobbold Gorge and provide information about tours to the local gemfields which are well worth a visit for anyone interested in fossicking for topaz. This park makes a good overnight stop or a good base to explore the area for a few days. We enjoyed our stay and would return.

BIG4 Port Douglas Glengarry Tourist Park, Port Douglas

This park has lots of plusses but fell short of our expectations. The park is well shaded, it is very quiet (very minimal road noise) has flat sites with slabs and TV aerial provided. A reasonable pool. We experienced a very friendly welcome and were assisted to park the van. We paid a mid season tariff of $32.40 after the discount for two adults. We just after the high season so the park had probably got a belting before we got there. The park had a general feel of lacking investment in its infrastructure. The roads had been sealed but were in poor condition. The showers were old and tired - but still very functional with plenty of hot water. The toilets were similarly tired and water to the toilets was obviously restricted which meant by mid morning most of the toilets were soiled. We had previously stayed in the Coconut Park in Cairns which is a five star job and this may have affected our expectations. The charges were not much less but the quality of the park was very much poorer. Probably would be suitable for most, good for families and be suitable for a long stay, but missed the mark for us. Port Douglas is a nice town, good markets on the beach every Sunday, the trip to Cooktown via a loop coming back on the Bloomfield Track was great and recommended. Don't miss the Lion's Den pub - an Australian country pub icon. The Daintree and Cape Tribulation is worth a couple of days. Didn't make Mossman Gorge as lots of it was closed but we understand it is worth a visit.

Tall Timbers Caravan Park, Ravenshoe
Located on the Kennedy Highway. Behind the BP Roadhouse on the right hand side heading into town from Innot Hot Springs. Ph: 07 4097 6325.
We were unable to shower when the washing machines for the Motel were in use - this happens frequently each morning when all cold water goes to the machines. Shower water was then scalding - too hot to shower. It's the only caravan park in town. We would drive a long way to avoid it in future. Average staff friendliness. Price was higher than expected, poor value for money ($20.00 2A per night powered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to all sites, were dirty, condition is poor, water pressure is bad, there was adequate hot water, dry change area. Adequate number of tourist sites, some level sites, poor night lighting, average sized sites, hard to negotiate into site. Basic laundry, no rec room, kiosk. Quiet, claustrophobic park, too much shade.
Dislikes: Generally poorly maintained and untidy. Shower problem unacceptable.
Local Information: Ravenshoe is a beautiful town with mountain rivers and falls nearby. There is a free camp in town but with few amenities.
Roads: The road from Ravenshoe to Atherton is narrow and requires considerable caution when towing a caravan. Otherwise roads are good.

Well signposted on the Bruce Highway, 4kms north of Rollingstone. About 60 kms north of Townsville. Easy to find: about 60ks north of Townsville turn right at the sign or from the north turn left. Then 4 kms down a sealed side road to the beach, which ends at the entrance to the park. When heading north do not turn off at the earlier small sign to Rollingstone as a low bridge will prevent turning around. Ph: 07 4770 7277 or 1800 006 567. BIG4 member. No pets allowed.

We thought this park was great. It is large and we were fortunate enough to get a beachfront site where our van backed up to the sand. The amenities block is first class. Lots of room in the showers and obviously all very new - some of the best we have seen in seven years of caravanning. The amenities were a little distance from our site but you can't have the view and the convenience. At $36 for two adults (after the discount) it was pretty pricey but you will pay for the location and the view. Friendly welcome. We would stay again and it would be nice for a long stay but just bring plenty of provisions or be prepared to drive a distance to the next town.

There are now two fully functioning amenities blocks. In the Ladies, this gives 10 toilets and 8 showers. The park is booked out for the coming Townsville Show long weekend, so after that I will be able to comment on how well the facilities cope! The amenities are really clean. Can't fault the current management, or level of care of the place. Much ongoing upkeep. Clearly, much work has gone into repairing any storm damage from last summer. The reception/shop stocks milk, ice. Bread and papers can be ordered for the next day. We have never stayed here before, and think it is great, even though we have had to take a fairly small site - the penalty for not booking ahead at peak times, so park cannot be blamed for that. The swimming pool is just superb.

With the setting of this park it should be a 5 star, but due to lack of management we have only rated it 4 and this is being fairly generous. We understand that the management were asked to leave a couple of days before we arrived. One can only hope that the new management will be more customer friendly than the previous ones. The office staff were not friendly or communicative, we were given very minimal park information and no tourist information at all. The fact that there is no tourist bureau nearby the park management should make a point of giving any local information available to visitors. The second amenity block still hasn't been finished (we are led to believe that it has been under construction for some years) and even with only one small school group and the park virtually empty, the existing amenity block couldn't cope. The office is only manned between 8 and 5 which in the heart of the tourist season is ridiculous. There is an after hours bell but it took at least 15 minutes to be answered. We were sitting in the excellent camp kitchen one evening, but at 10 all the lights were switched off and we had great difficulty in clearing up in the dark, we should have been notified that this would happen and there should also be a night light so that you can see to clear up. Average staff friendliness. Price was higher than expected, reasonable value for money ($35 2A per night powered, with BIG4 discount). Inadequate number of amenities, are close to only some sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, separate bathroom, soap provided, paper towels/dryer provided, exhaust fans/good ventilation, disabled facilities. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, average sized sites, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Good laundry, good rec room, good camp kitchen, disabled facilities, dump point, secure entry. Peaceful, open and roomy, not enough shade, family/friendly atmosphere, no permanents. Suitable for month or longer, suitable for families, well maintained park, park is considered kid-safe.
Likes: The park setting is stunning. The swimming pool is one of the best we have encountered.
Dislikes: The park used to stock the basic food items such as milk and bread but doesn't any more which is a pity because there are no shops close by.

A well set-out park which backs on to the beach with views to Palm Islands. Sites are large but, even though we advised when booking that we had a 25ft long van, the site we were allocated had a tree in about the centre making it difficult to manoeuvre to be able to extend the awning. Quite a number of sites have the same problem but management don't appear to take these into account when allocating sites. There is a beautiful, large, clean swimming pool, a large, clean, camp kitchen and a barbecue by the beach. Amenities are modern and clean with soap, paper towels and air towels provided. There is also a disabled/family bathroom available. Probably the quietest park we've ever stayed at: no road traffic noise, no air traffic noise, no early risers off to work noise and no yapping dogs! Tariff is expensive ($35 per night, less BIG4 discount). As this park is away from tourist attractions, shops etc it is probably more suitable for those who like to do nothing much but relax.

This park is just stunning. It is like a palm fringed tropical island. The amenities are spotless, with soap, hand dryers and paper towels. The camp kitchen is large, with gas burners, microwave, oil, cleaning equipment and a delightful view over one of the man made ponds. There are some shade trees, all the sites are grassy, some drive through, the roads sealed and guttered. Most have sullage and looks like the new area will have eventually. The large pool and surrounding area is lovely and well used as it is dangerous to swim in the ocean, because of the local crocodile. Stock up on provisions at Townsville or Ingham and stay awhile. Claim a waterfront site and soak up the island dotted, calm waters.

Taylors Beach Caravan Park, Taylors Beach
91 Johndory Street. Approximately half-way between Whitsunday's and Cairns. 14km East of Ingham. On northern outskirts of Ingham, take Lucinda/Halifax/Taylors Beach turnoff. Taylors Beach turnoff is 1-2km before reaching Halifax. This road becomes John Dory Street. Caravan Park is on right. Ph: 07 4777 8560. Dogs on leash.
This a nice park that is well off the beaten track. The park and a few houses is all that is here. Nearest shops are 8km away or 20 km to Ingham. Great place for fishing or just relaxing. Park is mostly full of long term fishing people who know each other well. We felt a bit like intruders on their space and the atmosphere was not as welcoming as you would experience in most parks at this time of year. Enjoyed a couple of days there though and our dogs thoroughly enjoyed their runs along the beach that is very close by. Friendly staff, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($27 2A per night, powered, shoulder season). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to all sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, dry change area. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, large sites, concrete annex slabs to most sites, shade to most sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Basic laundry, no rec room, kiosk, dump point. Quiet, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere. Congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. Clean pool is open to the sun, kid-safe pool area, tables and chairs provided. Suitable for month or longer, well maintained park.
Likes: Large sites which give room for a boat at each one. Close to beach. Clean amenities.
Dislikes: Nothing really. But missed the social side as that was a "closed shop" so to speak. But if we had spent a couple of months there fishing I'm sure that would have changed.

Its shop/office is the only commercial premises in the village. There are about 35 powered sites, so this is not a large park. Most sites appear to be occupied by people who stay for some time, for the fishing/crabbing. Many have boats so the narrow road in the park can get congested. Suggest phoning to book in advance as during our 5 days here there were only 1 or 2 sites becoming vacant each day. I have rated the park as suitable for month or more - but only if you fish. The sites are quite small and can be hard to get into. Those that back onto the mangrove creek are larger. There were some midges, but not as many as we feared; we heard the mangrove area is sprayed. The pool is fairly small and just a rectangle sunk in a small, fenced in, concreted area, that also contains 2 BBQ's. The amenities show their age, but have been freshly painted and it appears new basins installed. The gardens and grounds are well maintained. We used this park as a base to explore the area, but would have been better off in Ingham. We were disappointed that there was no beach, despite the name. This is not really a park for children as there is no play area or open space for them. Friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($27 2A per night). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to all sites, were clean, condition is reasonable, water pressure is bad, there was adequate hot water, soap provided. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, small sites, concrete annex slabs to most sites, shade to some sites, hard to negotiate into site, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Basic laundry, no rec room, kiosk, dump point. Quiet, claustrophobic park, not enough shade. Clean gas bbq (free), dismal bbq area atmosphere. No playground. Clean pool is open to the sun, pool area not considered kid-safe. Suitable for month or longer, well maintained park.
Likes: Birdlife. 5 bars on mobile phone and internet modem.
Dislikes: Feels rather squashed. Could not get ABC TV; 7, 9, SBS ok. If you don't fish there is little to do here.
Parking: Park in street.
Added Touches: Fish cleaning area.
Local Information: Fishing in nearby inlet - bank or boat. Crabbing too. Park shop serves as small general store for village as there are no other shops (closest Halifax). There is no ocean beach access at Taylors Beach - the waterfront is a tidal inlet, not the ocean. The inlet is about 500m from the caravan park.
Roads: The road from Ingham is narrow in places. Need to watch for cane trains in harvest season.

Likes: close to the lake, great spot for fishermen and women chasing barra and redclaw crayfish. Ground staff were helpful and friendly, unlike management.
Dislikes: the park management have the personality of pit-bull terriers, male host is ignorant and ignores people in the park. Always appears dirty with an apparent bad temper. Don't bother asking him if you have a problem, all you will get is a grunt and be in his bad books for the duration of your stay. My wife asked if there was a chance of having locks fitted to the ablutions when she found a man in the ladies shower. Promptly told to 'forget that idea' and was thereafter treated like garbage by the male "host". People walk in off the street to use the showers and toilets. Caravans park opposite and do exactly the same, management apparently don't care. We stayed on the one site for over 2 months and during that time, no lawns were cut. Sites were dirty and unwatered. No maintenance was done after the sites were vacated.
Parking: some of the sites are small and impossible to get a large van into. Staff would have no idea of the size of each site when you book in. Have frequently found a small camper or tent on a drive through site whilst large vans have been sent to a site that is far too small to park or manoeuvre a van. Appears that no record is kept of what sites are occupied as caravans are frequently sent to sites that already are occupied!
Added Touches: Nothing free in this park,
Local Information: Situated on the beautiful Atherton Tablelands, could be a showcase for the region except for management.
Roads: Bitumen roads all the way to the park.

Personally, don’t like mixes of permanents, cabins and van sites – looks unkempt and can make manoeuvring difficult. Otherwise quite a nice park – clean amenities, lovely pool area and lots of trees, with a choice of concrete slabs or grass sites. Management was very friendly, did not offer to help us on site but did have plenty of advice about the area. Lake Tinaroo/Atherton is a lovely area, so many days could be spent exploring and this park is a good base. Lovely drive around the lake, with plenty of picnic spots.

The cost for 2 adults in an ensuite site was $32/night (less BIG4 discount). This is the mid-season rate, although it was not school holidays. The ensuite site was very small with no bench for personal items etc. No extractor fan. Floor and walls and towel rails were dripping wet when we arrived and they're no mats or squeegees to wipe up. The unit had obviously been just hosed down and left in that condition. The shower curtain didn't prevent water from flooding the unit. No mixer tap to hot and cold taps. Quite unsatisfactory for the price charged. As it was a very rainy period there was no hope of it drying out without some help. Although a request to cleaners to dry the unit out brought the response that as the weather was rainy it made it impossible to dry out after cleaning/hosing. A request to management brought a friendly young man with cloths to dry the floor, which was somewhat helpful. As we didn't utilise the amenity blocks can't comment on this. Average management. Poor value for money. Adequate number of tourist sites, sites were level. Park atmosphere was okay. Average pool. Suitable for overnighter.
Likes: The fact that there was good TV reception and also CDMA phone access. A loyalty card was issued for fuel discount from the service station at front of park.
Dislikes: Smallness and lack of basic facilities in ensuites. No proper ventilation provided.
Parking: Parking was in the forecourt of the service station. Difficult if more than one van waiting to check in

BIG4 Townsville Woodlands Holiday Park, Townsville
Bruce Highway, Derragun, about 15 km north of Townsville. Fronts Bruce Highway, to north of Townsville built-up area. The entrance road is at a set of traffic lights. Coming from south, you pass Woodlands Shopping Centre, then just as you come down from an elevated section of road, you come to the traffic lights and the turn. From the north, the traffic lights are at the Bushland Beach road corner. Ph: 07 4751 6955 or 1800 251 485. BIG4 member. No pets.
There are really two sections to this park: the original, all en-suite section, and the newer powered site section (and unpowered camp area). We stayed in the newer section. The sites are very spacious. The individual bathroom layout of the amenities block is excellent. We would stay in this section again because the ensuite sites were much smaller, and were a mix of tourist and long-term residents, so the outlook from some of those sites was a bit scrappy. The comments below refer to the section we stayed in. Friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice, van parking assistance provided by staff, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, very good value for money ($27 2A per night, powered, peak season). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to all sites, were clean, condition is very good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, separate bathroom, dry change area, exhaust fans/good ventilation, disabled facilities. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, large sites, concrete annex slabs to most sites, shade to some sites, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Good laundry, good rec room, good camp kitchen, disabled facilities, dump point. Quiet, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, too many permanents. Clean UC bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. Basic playground in good condition. Clean pool is shaded, kid-safe pool area, tables and chairs provided. Suitable for month or longer, suitable for families, well maintained park.
Likes: Sense of spaciousness. Very clean. Could walk (1km) to Woodlands shops, though not a formed path all the way. Although it fronts the highway, traffic noise was unobtrusive; the occasional train was a bit louder. Convenient to Townsville - a 10-15 minute drive to centre.
Dislikes: Untidiness of some of the permanent sites. Unruly behaviour by some permanent residents.
Parking: There is an area for a book-in queue.

This park was initially all en-suite sites but in recent years has added another section of powered caravan sites, which are large and grassed. The toilet block consists of roomy individual bathrooms plus some separate toilets. En-suite sites have a double concrete block for caravan and annex. Facilities include pool, BBQ and internet. The staff were friendly and helpful and the park kept well maintained and clean. The park is about 14 km north of the CBD and on the highway. Access is made easy by traffic lights at the entrance. $30 per night for powered site less Big4 discount.

Bluewater Caravan Park, Townsville
This park is situated 26 km north of Townsville on the Bruce Highway, Bluewater. Ph: 07 4778 6118. Pets allowed on application.
Directions from the highway to the park are nonexistent, easy to miss turn when travelling north. Friendly staff, van parking assistance provided by staff. Price was as expected, poor value for money ($25 2A per night, powered Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to only some sites, cleanliness was average, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, paper towels/dryer provided. Inadequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, large sites, shade to most sites, drive-through sites, poor water quality. Basic laundry, no rec room, dump point. Quiet, not enough shade, too many permanents. Dismal bbq area atmosphere No playground. Clean pool is shaded, kid-safe pool area Suitable for overnighter.
Likes: Only stay here if desperate. This park could only be used as an overflow park in peak season, would not stay here if you had a choice.
Dislikes: Number of permanents, all with savage dogs and bad attitudes. Permanents need to be in a separate section of the park, away from tourists. Tourists and permanents mixed together does not work.
Added Touches: None at all. Power supplies and taps are very scarce in some parts of this park. I think that sullage is nonexistent in most sections.
Roads: bitumen road all the way to the park. Some roads in the park bitumen and some dirt and gravel.

This is a very large park with a predominant population of permanents. There was no attempt to place tourists together and we were placed next to a very noisy family who lived permanently at the park. Choosing your own site could prove difficult, as the sites are a long walk from the office and boom gate. On the positive side the park has generous sites and is suitable for large rigs. There are three large amenity blocks that are clean but are in a quite run down condition. Very little road noise. Average staff friendliness, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, good value for money ($20.00 2A per night powered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, cleanliness was average, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, dry change area. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, large sites, concrete annex slabs, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by. We definitely would not stay here again - staff were great but that's where it ended. The park has had no money spent on it for years if appearances are anything to go by - the amenities block is just disgusting, leaking toilet bowls, leaking showers (some broken shower heads have been replaced with ordinary shower heads which means the water actually hits the door - there are no drains in the showers, just holes in the floor (eerk). Some of the taps on the hand basins don't work, totally grotty. No driers in the laundry, no ironing boards. Just to make matters worse, the park backs on to the main railway line, so trains are going through night and day. The park roads are full of potholes, and there are lots of permanents with tarps and junk piled up. Certainly not value for money.

While this park advertises it doesn't take dogs, it will accept some well-behaved, smaller dogs. You will need to check when booking. There is a shortage of dog friendly parks in Townsville, so it will be worth a call. Comparatively close to the Townsville CBD (about 15 minutes drive). This park is between the rail lines and the very busy Ingham Road, so it can be noisy. The amenities were spotless. Management very helpful. BBQ and swimming pool.

UPDATED REPORT NEEDED

Before booking with this park I asked the owner if it was quiet and he said "It's so quiet you can hear the stars twinkling". Unfortunately this was not the case. The park is on the busy Herveys Range Road and the traffic noise is relentless. Powered sites for vans are only 50 metres from the road and the sounds of cars and trucks goes on all day. It does ease off at 11pm but starts up again at 5.30am. If noise is not a problem to you then the park itself is OK.

Manager's name is Jodi and Jack Presecan. An excellent park, and surprising find in the Townsville city area. This park is owned and operated by the 7th Day Adventist Church. It comprises a convention centre, primary school, motel accommodation, cabins all on the one huge site adjacent to the Ross River. The walkway beside the river and an off-leash dog park is accessible from side streets at either end of the block which the caravan park occupies. Very friendly staff, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was lower than expected, very good value for money ($20.00 2A per night, peak season). Likes: This is not your normal commercial park but is run by The 7-day Adventist Church. Tourists are very welcome and it is advertised at the local tourist office. The park is open style with ample powered & unpowered sites. These are all grassed and the ones nearest the amenity block are very shady. There are also cabins and air-conditioned motel style rooms with ensuites. These units are booked out when there is a conference on but most of the time we were there we had the caravan area to ourselves. It is booked out in the June/July school holidays but we suggest you phone. It is centrally situated with great walks on the adjacent Ross River which unfortunately cannot be seen from within the park. It is close to Stocklands Shopping Centre (the largest in Townsville), Kmart centre, and Townsville Hospital. It is the most peaceful park we have been in and although the facilities are basic it is very good value for money at (most parks in Townsville are over $30 per night). There is one washing machine situated in both male and female amenities (no dryers). There is no pool. No permanents allowed. It is ideal for grey nomads.

Rowes Bay Caravan Park, Townsville
Heatley's Parade, Rowes Bay. Opposite the beach 3.5kms north of Townsville CBD. Ph: 07 4771 3576. Dogs are not permitted.
This park is a real enigma. The management have a system that doesn't take bookings until the morning you would like to go in. The systems works by you ringing about 8am to get your name on the incoming list. They work out by 10am how many have left and you need to ring back after 10am to confirm whether you have made it in. At $33 a night for two adults - probably about northern Queensland average during the high season. Once you are in you can extend your stay by advising them before 6pm the day before. The park has several major strengths. It is close to the water (just across the road), it is reasonably close to The Strand (an attractive part of Townsville that has pools, water features, bbqs, public facilities, restaurants, lawns etc), it is reasonably close to the city proper (about five kilometres away) and finally it has very nice amenities. In fact for us, the amenities were the highlight. They were obviously new facilities that have been well planned and they coped well with a full park. The van sites are flat, with cement slabs and there is plenty of water. The park has a small swimming pool and a half court tennis court. It is a good location for bike riders. There are security barriers and lots of signs warning that thieves take holidays too. You might think that the rating is a bit low for all those positives. But the booking system I found unfriendly, the welcome was OK but not friendly (no information was offered about the town and little explanation of the parks facilities). There are lots of permanents up the front of the park and the sites were not particularly well kept. The lighting at night was insufficient particularly because the internal roads are a bit uneven and you need to rely on other vanners lights to find you way. Overall the feel of the park was not welcoming but I would be surprised if it were not full for most of the high season because of its strengths. A lot of people obviously stay for long periods and water the lawns on their sites. We probably would not bother going back and would try something out of Townsville (like Rollingstone - about 50kms down the road) or one of the others in Townsville if we were looking for that big town experience. Magnetic Island is worth a ride on the ferry but not terribly 'magnetic'. Great Moreton Bay bugs at the Rockpool Seafood Cafe on The Strand.

The cabin we stayed in was quite old and only had minimal bench space in the kitchen. However it was in the quiet section of the park next to the pool. There were a lot more younger people staying here than in any other park we have come across so far but this wasn't an issue. Quite a lot of permanents but they were at the back of the park and very well presented. Friendly staff, average staff response to complaints Price was as expected, good value for money ($435 2A C1 per week cabin). Tully lived up to its name as wettest place in Australia. We arrived to find a lot of the sites, including ours, waterlogged even though we had a drive through slab site. By the time we wriggled our way into our tiny site, it was a muddy quagmire. The amenities block was clean, but the partitions between toilets and also shower cubicles were decidedly on the skimpy side. The partitions were about 18ft from the floor and reached just above my shoulders (I am below average height). I think the toilet bowls must have come from a failed kindergarten sale, as they are so low the seat is actually below the level of the partitions (a bit hard on the creaky old knees). The place had a lot of permanents and tent campers who where apparently causing the staff a few headaches. The kiosk cum office was only open 1 hour mornings and 2 hours afternoons. A thoroughly miserable stay. On leaving, the lady in the office assured me it was a beautiful park when it wasn't raining. Average staff friendliness, average staff response to complaints, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected ($20.00 2A per night powered). No playground, no pool.
Local Information: visit sugar mill tour, see giant gumboot, Murray falls if been raining.

From the Undara turnoff there is about 15kms of wide dirt road which is graded from time to time, which in places is very badly corrugated. Ph: 07 4097 1900 or 1800 990 992. No pets allowed.

Gravel road into Undara was well graded for 2WD & van access. Guided tours - 2hr, half-day, full-day. Recommend the longer tours if physically able. We did half-day, well worth the $80. Self-guide walking trails are well marked with info along the way. Kalkiri Crater is a must on sunrise or sunset. Friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($30 2A per night powered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to only some sites, cleanliness was average, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, dry change area, paper towels/dryer provided. Adequate number of tourist sites, some level sites, poor night lighting, average sized sites, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by. Basic laundry, no rec room, good camp kitchen, kiosk, van parking. Quiet, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere, no permanents. UC bbq in congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. No playground. Clean pool is open to the sun, kid-safe pool area, tables and chairs provided, toddlers catered for. Suitable for few days, suitable for families, well maintained park.
Likes: Bush surroundings, pleasant staff, free varied evening activities, detailed walks & area information available, tour guides were excellent.
Dislikes: One main & small poolside amenities, walking through accommodation areas to access, timed lighting not on until after 6pm. Some powered sites were full sun. Request shade when booking.
Parking: Ample parking
Added Touches: Nightly campfire activities - sing-along, poetry, flora & fauna talks, etc
Local Information: Surrounding region has a unique beauty, good for a few days of trekking.
Roads: Getting to and from involves single lane roads and confronting road trains (50m long trucks). Gravel shoulders fine. Best advice - slow down to 60km and let approaching traffic use the single-lane blacktop to avoid stones.

This is a bush-type camp so can be dusty but we liked the birds and wildlife. Layout of area is not good and some sites are very small and close together. Friendly staff, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($30 2A per night powered). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to only some sites, cleanliness was average, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Some unlevel sites, average sized sites, adequate taps close by. Poor laundry. Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere, no permanents. Clean pool is shaded, tables and chairs provided. Suitable for few days, suitable for families.
Added Touches: Restaurant and Bar on site. Breakfasts and night entertainment around a camp fire.
Local Information: Tours of Lava Tubes available at varying costs.

Manager's name is Jodee and Trent Kokles. Very friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, good value for money ($30 2A per night powered). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to most sites, cleanliness was average, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, exhaust fans/good ventilation, disabled facilities. Adequate number of tourist sites, some unlevel sites, good night lighting, large sites, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by. Poor laundry, no rec room, good camp kitchen, kiosk, disabled facilities. Peaceful, open & roomy park, not enough shade, family/friendly atmosphere. Clean wood bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting. No playground. Clean pool is open to sun, kid-safe pool area, tables and chairs provided, toddlers catered for. Suitable for a week or more, well maintained park, park is considered kid-safe.
Likes: I liked the path lights that were used to light up the sites and the pathways as they could be covered up if they annoyed you. The openness of the park was nice, with many pathways and walks to explore.
Dislikes: Laundry building was miles away from anywhere. Had to carry your laundry right across the park or drive there to wash clothes. Only one clothes line and it was all the way across the other side of the park - nowhere near the laundry. Only 2 washing machines and two dryers in the laundry - both ancient. Clothes still were not dry after 2 x 60 minute cycles in the dryer. Park really needs to organise the laundry better. A new laundry next to the main amenities block near the caravan/camping/swag tents would be ideal - and some clothes lines.
Added Touches: Each site has its own campfire with hotplate.
Local Information: Guided tours (fee applies) through lava tubes, walk up Kalkarni Crater to view lava tubes from distance (free).
Roads: Road into Undara has recently been bitumened all the way to the park.

One of the best parks we have stayed at. Staff very friendly and helpful with tourism suggestions. Basic provisions in the kiosk, internet access, including laptop connection provision (Broadband), and lots of tourist information including booking facilities. Big camp kitchen, games room, two pools, lots of gas barbecues ($1), two amenities blocks with curtained shower areas, large changing areas and good pressure from showers, well-equipped laundry with lots of hanging space immediately outside. Sites vary in size and the largest ones are very large. We parked our 25ft Heritage and Nissan Patrol on the site and there would have been room for a small van as well. There is a large unpowered camping area right next to the beach. Wonga is about 10kms south of the Daintree Ferry and so is well-situated for exploring the area. Very quiet at night with no traffic noise. A park suitable for all ages and types and for any length of time from a couple of days to a month or so. We stayed for a week and it was very busy.
