Riverside Caravan Park, Bingara
About 1 km north of post office adjacent to the hospital and swimming pool on the road to Copeton Dam. Travelling north, turn right at sign after first section of bridge over Gwydir River. Ph: 02 6724 1209. Dogs on leash.
Local Information: Bingara is a great area for fossickers with lots of pretty drives and interesting sights. RSL club has great meals, good golf course, horse riding and canoeing down river, clean town.
We have stayed at this park before and have rated it highly. There was nothing in our latest visit to change that opinion. This park is one of the best value for money parks we have utilised. Friendly and helpful management, adequate and spotless amenities and a price of $15.65 per night 2A powered in a clean and pleasant town all add up to a great experience. The only negative comment on this latest visit relates to things well beyond the influence of the park owners/managers and that is the condition of the roads in the region. In common with all the secondary roads in NSW the local ones are badly in need of major rebuilding works (it has gone beyond simply maintenance).

What a gem of a park! Neat, tidy, well grassed and shaded with large sites. Helpful and friendly managers. Amenities spotless. At $14.35/night 2A, powered site, best value for money we had throughout a three-month trip through NSW, Vic and Tas. The local town is interesting and shows a lot of care and pride by its citizens. We will definitely stay again.

Boggabri Caravan Park, Boggabri
Laidlaw Street, next to the council swimming pool which is on the corner of Caxton & Laidlaw Streets. 104 Laidlaw Street is the managers home a couple of blocks away from the caravan park. Ph: 02 6743 4555. All pets allowed.
Boggabri is a struggling town on the Kamilaroi Highway roughly midway between Gunnedah and Narrabri. The town is well serviced with all the basic shops i.e. supermarket, hardware, service stations, takeaway, café, tearooms, pubs & clubs. The townsfolk we spoke with wish there was a bakery to complete their town. The park is a couple of blocks away from the highway so road noise was not a problem. A lot of coal trains pass through the town each day/night but were not noticeable from the park. The park has twelve sites all with ensuites next to level concrete slabs that are cracking. When we arrived, ten sites we occupied by permanents, probably mine workers who were not noticeable. There was space for a couple of self contained units or tents/camper trailers. There was a communal laundry, free washing machines and dryer, but no communal toilet/shower for the campers/camper trailers. The ensuites were adequate for ones needs, each with its own hot water system which provided excellent showers. However as the park manager is off site and part time, cleaning of the ensuite we had left a bit to be desired. It was not really off putting it just needed a good clean however for some reason the ensuite always smelt "nice". Friendly staff, reasonable value for money ($19 2A per night, ensuite), water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Inadequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, large sites, concrete annex slabs to most sites, shade to most sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Basic laundry, no rec room. Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, too many permanents. No bbqs, no playground. Suitable for few days.
Likes: It suited us for a couple of days.
Dislikes: The fact that only two of twelve sites were available is not encouraging tourist dollars to the struggling town.
Roads: The road from Mullaley (Oxley Hwy) to Boggabri is dead flat through great flood plain farming land. Despite what the Hema maps show the section south of Boggabri is excellent tarred road and about 10km north of Mullaley is the same. The mid section is good dirt road with approximately 50% of this currently being worked on to seal under Federal Government Grants as part of the Wellington to Narrabri Highway (Alternative to the Newell Highway?)

Kidmans Camp Van and Cabin Park, Bourke

Local Information: 5min walk to the Darling River for a ride on the paddleboat Jandra. Excellent town tour that is a must. Pick up at the caravan park.

$29 per night. Large park on the Darling River. Reception friendly but not very helpful. Told to just drive around and find a site. Park very full by 4 pm. One amenity block; six showers and 2 disabled showers 6 toilets for whole of park, block inside dimly lit. Water pressure fair, water heat fair. Only 3 vanity basins. Same in mens, but no plugs! Sites are grassed, only saw 2 with slabs. No sullage. Park lighting non existent. Many are drive-thru. Good camp kitchen and laundry. Have BBQ and veg meal and pancakes twice a week - $15 per person with bush poet.
Local Information: Local information centre in Bourke is excellent, provide 'mudmaps' for some good self- drives. RSL closed for meals. Bakery very good.

The park and amenities are a bit run-down, but amenities were clean. Free bbq's were well away from the vans, in the open and no lighting. Needed to arrange for bbq gas to be turned on (no problem) as 'kids' drain the gas bottles by leaving taps on. Park was okay for 2 nights, but would not rave about it. Haven't tried the other park, we chose this one as we expected it to be quieter regards traffic noise, but may try the other if we pass this way again. Friendly staff, no complaints, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was higher than expected, reasonable value for money ($20 2A per night powered). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to most sites, cleanliness was average, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, dry change area, exhaust fans/good ventilation. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, average sized sites. Basic laundry, no rec room, kiosk. Quiet, open and roomy, plenty of shade. Clean gas bbq (free). No playground, no pool. Suitable for a few days.
Dislikes: Showing its age, could do with more maintenance. A bit overpriced for what is there.

Manager's name is Noel and Heather Woo. An unpretentious park catering for travelling public on Newell Highway. It is ideally sited in the town for this role. The sites are large and well shaded. Amenities are kept clean but they are old and badly in need of renovation. According to a plaque on the building they were built in 1968 and have just become a series of patchwork repairs. The managers are friendly and helpful in the office but are rarely sighted in the park. The town has all the necessary requirements. Siding Springs Observatory nearby makes an interesting diversion. The park is suitable of overnight or a few days. There is some road noise from highway but it didn't worry us too much. Would use as an overnight stop again.

Manager's name is Shirley. Friendly staff - clean amenities - saw small dogs on leashes even though some websites say that no dogs are permitted. In bush setting so best off with high clearance vehicle to back into sites. Had a lovely site with concrete slab, power, water, table/chairs, large fireplace built from rocks, with table and overhead pipe to hang camp oven on. Best to bring own firewood. 1 small washtub - no shop. Very friendly staff, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was lower than expected, good value for money ($10 2A per night, powered, off-peak season). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, dry change area, paper towels/dryer provided, exhaust fans/good ventilation. Mostly level sites, poor night lighting, large sites, concrete annex slabs to most sites, shade to most sites, hard to negotiate into site, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Local Information: A lot of folk were camping down by the dam (self sufficient with own amenities; no shade, but they were close to the water for fishing/canoeing etc.)

A great park, in town behind a service station with 4 of the best en-suite's you will find. Excellent staff, friendly, cleaning continuously. 3 cents/litre off fuel. Walk to town, RSL club, Folk Museum and the Australian Standing Stones. We were there over Easter and on Sunday Morning, found the Easter Bunny had been. Adults found their chocolate eggs in a paper cup, children found theirs in the gardens and around their sites. A very nice suprise and something they do each year.

Stayed 4 days, $26.10p/n en-suite site (discount rate). Cathy and Gavin, the owners, were very helpful with both park information and tourist information. Cathy gave us a folder of tourist information, which was very helpful, and we handed it back to her when leaving. Gavin showed us to our site and parked our van. Total service. Even though our van has a toilet/shower, we treated ourselves to an en-suite (site 27) for our stay because they were spotless and large. The park is spotless, extremely well maintained and employees were continually cleaning, or planting throughout our stay. The amenities block had 2 toilets and 2 showers - 1 shower/toilet for the disabled. The laundry had 2 machines and 1 dryer, and the camp kitchen is excellent, one of the best we have seen. Dogs allowed at manager's discretion. We were given a petrol discount of 3 cents per litre (the park is located behind a service station which doubles as the kiosk and office). A locked back gate provides easy access to the town and clubs. We had an excellent meal at the RSL club and a wonderful seafood platter ($30.00 per person) at Henderson's Seafood - a takeaway and restaurant. The platter was so generous that we could not eat it all so they happily packed the rest in a tin foil container so we could enjoy it the next day - and we sure did. We were surprised that such wonderful seafood could be purchased inland when we had previously had such dismal fish and chips at the big Ballina Club. We would highly recommend Henderson's. We found Glen Innes very cold after hot and humid Tweed Heads, but would return again, especially to this small, spotless, very well run park which is one of our favourites.

A tidy well maintained park in a quiet location. Roomy sites. Sites at rear of park where we were placed were not drive through but there was ample room for car parking in front of the van so it could be left connected after reversing in. There are two amenities blocks, the one at the rear looked a little old but had been refurbished on the inside and was very clean and well laid out.

Lightning Ridge Information
Good Tourist Informatio Office, guided tours worthwhile, interesting characters.
Hot Artesian Baths 2.4 km from town. Free and open 24 hrs day.
Great town for opals. Very good local tours for self drive or with local bus companies, lots of history.
There are some great 1/2 day tours of Lightning Ridge, which I highly recommend, it goes for about 4 hours and went all over Lightning Ridge with a very informative driver. Picks up from the caravan parks. Just seeing the houses that have been built, are amazing out on the various drives. I was there for 3 nights, and there was plenty to see and do.
Go on a 3hr Black Opal Tour first up so you can get a feel for the place and decide what you might want to visit later in more detail. Free hot artesian springs are great. Olympic Pool & Theme Park is fantastic for kids - only normally open from October to Easter. A drive out to the new mining area (rough dirt roads once there but ok in 2WD) encompassing Grawin, Glengarry & Sheepyards well worth it. We stayed four (4) nights but really could have done with a week.
Mining sites, black queen lamp museum, cactus garden.

Crocodile Caravan and Camping Park, Lightning Ridge
Western side of town 500m from PO, on Morilla Street. Ph: 02 6829 0437.
The other park listed in our caravan park book was already booked out at 3 pm, so we thought we had no choice but to stay here. Unfortunately we found other options after we booked in. The amenities block was a converted galvanised iron shed. It was really basic, poorly lit and of poor to average cleanliness and I decided to skip the shower. Price was the same as the other park across the road, and they rate 3.5 stars. I suggest you book ahead elsewhere or check out other options before going here - we won't be back. Average staff friendliness. Price was higher than expected, poor value for money ($17 2A per night powered).

Lightning Ridge Caravan Park, Lightning Ridge
Pandor Street, just off the main street. Entering town from Castlereagh Highway, turn right into Opal Street. Ph: 02 6829 0532. Dogs on leash.
This park is very ordinary. We were not given any park details or any assistance to find a site, we just told to go and find one and then come back and pay. The amenities were very old and in dire need of renovation, although they were clean. There is a lot of rubbish at the back of the reception area, the management are obviously not interested in cleaning or bettering the park. There is obviously no incentive to improve the park as the park was full for the three nights we spent there. The caravans are parked in a horseshoe and in the centre there is a grassed area where the bbq is situated, there is an undercover seating area a short distance from the bbq. Friendly staff. Price was as expected, poor value for money ($18 2A per night powered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, cleanliness was average, condition is poor, water pressure is bad, there was adequate hot water, dry change area, exhaust fans/good ventilation, disabled facilities. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, small sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Basic laundry, dump point. Quiet, open and roomy, not enough shade, family/friendly atmosphere, no permanents. Dirty gas bbq (free), dismal bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting. No playground, no pool. Suitable for a few days, suitable for families, park is considered kid-safe.
Dislikes: The amenity block had been allowed to deteriorate to its present condition without any attempt to renovate it.
Parking: At reception.
Local Information: Lots of tours and fossicking for opals.
Roads: Average and quite bumpy.
Date 08/2008. Park Rating 1: If we come to Lightning Ridge again we would check out the other parks in town before staying at this one again.
Report submitted by Fran & Trevor, Melbourne.

Not well sign posted. This would be the worst park we have ever stayed at, very ordinary indeed. Reception was very untidy and rough. The amenities were woeful - broken benches, tiles lifting and dirty, cats roaming through the showers which remain open to public access. No security at all. The permanents did not keep their sites in good condition, rubbish all over. No attempt by management to force a clean-up. It is a council park which may account for the lack of interest in its condition. We did find another park in the area (behind the Tavern) we would have moved too had we been there any longer. We saw no point in complaining, its condition was obvious. We put it down to experience. I would go back to the Ridge but not to that park. However, that aside, Lightning Ridge is a delightful place to visit. Unfriendly staff. Price was lower than expected, poor value for money ($15 2A per night powered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, were dirty, condition is poor, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, dry change area. Adequate number of tourist sites, some unlevel sites, good night lighting, small sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Noisy, not enough shade, too many permanents. Dirty bbq. No playground, no pool. Suitable for overnighter.
Likes: It was cheap.
Roads: Good road but sharp broken edges.

The van park section is very basic and you'd only stay here if you had to. But that is the same standard across the road in the other van park too. Dirt roads and sites - poor amenities. It gets pretty crowded because there's not too many places to choose from. Good management, friendly management, management was helpful. Reasonable value for money. Very poor amenities, close to sites, water pressure was okay, there was adequate hot water. Poor sites, adequate number of tourist sites, sites were level, lighting at night was adequate, drive-through sites were available, adequate taps close by. Poor atmosphere to park. Likes: Well, not much, but you've gotta stay somewhere.
Dislikes: The sites can be tight. The amenities are lousy, but surprisingly the water was hot and plenty of it.
Local Information: There's plenty to do around here and we stayed for a few days. Try and get to the sunset lookout place on the western side of the town - dirt road of course.

Stayed 2 days, $18.00p/n powered site. Reception was helpful, but as they were not busy we were handed a site map with our site noted. We were told we could choose another if ours was unsuitable, but we found this site ok. This is a fairly large complex of motel cabins and caravan sites. One amenities block for caravanners and campers was old but clean. Laundry had 2 new washing machines and 1 dryer. Water pressure good to sites, which were level gravel and some shade. Sites, while drive through were very narrow. Good pool area, not under cover. Water restrictions were in place and when I reported that our site tap was leaking profusely, it was fixed within half an hour. Staff were seen working in the park. We had an excellent value meal at the restaurant with portions quite large. We explained to the waitress that it was a pity that we were full as we had our eye on the beautiful cheesecake in the glass cabinet. She offered to put two slices in a foil container so that we could enjoy it the next day - which we did. We also enjoyed a meal at the Bowling Club. The artesian bore swimming pool is approximately 2km out of town and is free. We had visited Lightening Ridge approximately 20 years ago and found lots of changes to the town, even though the mining sites still looked the same. We would return again and would definitely stay in this park.

Likes: well laid out park, easy to get into and out of, staff very friendly and helpful, this is a working station and not a 5 star luxury resort, so one should not expect all the bells and whistles, but the peace and quiet and the helpfulness of all concerned more than make up for that.
Parking: at house easy to park
Added Touches: bbq often free or nominal charge, communal wood fired bbq while I was there was whole pig and whole sheep on a spit, great tucker with great people. A few mullock heaps on site to keeps kids entertained looking for opal bits, no charge, walkabout tours of adjacent opal fields led by owners wife while I was there.
Local Information: Tag along tours of the opal fields go from here, well worth going on with lunch at the Glenngary Hilton serving up a plate that Pharlap couldn't jump, for bugger all $9.00 and pushing to eat all on plate, and cold beer to boot.
Roads: Last few kilometres are dirt in good condition, people need to remember the owners are not to blame for road conditions, when you drive outback, you should expect the odd bit of rough road, I have seen a lot worse.

What a waste! A really nice looking park that is completely ruined by wandering drunken yobbos shouting and fighting all night! We had an ensuite site so cannot comment on amenities. Friendly staff. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($23.50 2A powered). Inadequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, large sites, concrete annex slabs. Likes: Landscaping was excellent.
Dislikes: It was like spending the night at a prison with a riot taking place. The noise and fighting went on far too long to be considered an isolated incident. Travelling from the south the park is just on the left as you enter the town speed limits. This park has the potential to be a ripper but its current main appeal is the thermal pools. On the positive side, the pool(s) area is reasonably well maintained, there are plenty of trees, it is very quiet after a day in the hot pools, there is room for big rigs down the back of the park, mainly flat ground and a nicely tiled amenity block down the back. The negatives - unfortunately more than the positives. The BBQ provided is moveable and whilst the area provided is large and under sail cloth, the BBQ is pathetic. As with other contributors I found the arrangements for rubbish totally unacceptable. There are two bins, one down the back and one at the entrance and they regularly overflow. There was evidence of people dumping their rubbish in the toilet block in protest. The toilets and showers need a good clean - nice facility but not well maintained. The TV room is laughable. There is a toilet dump point - but it is muddy and needs to be concreted - I felt very uncomfortable using it. The toilets and showers are nicely tiled but poorly maintained. Hooks missing from every cubicle, no soap for hand washing, nowhere to place soap or shampoo in the showers and at times there were insufficient toilets in the morning. They have recently put in a large pool which will be a wonderful addition. It might make the entrance a little more appealing with older buildings and an untidy back end to a residence not providing a positive first impression. The staff seemed to be disinterested (at best). There is a car washing facility and some sites on all concrete (probably for the long termers of which there are lots - a real little community). However the park was full (mainly oldies) and people swear by the benefits of the thermal pools. Moree is a large town with good shopping facilities. The Services Club is well appointed and the town pretty tidy. The main street is used by all trucks passing through the town and make it less than appealing. Good menswear store! There are signs warning of security - so when in town or the park - lock up. At $27 per night (during July/August) it was probably reasonable value if you factor in the pools availability. Unfriendly staff.
Likes: Thermal Pools; trees
Dislikes: Rubbish arrangements; poor maintenance; TV room old and unappealing; dump point disgusting; BBQ unappealing

Stayed 3 nights, $24.30 per night, Family Parks discount. Dog friendly. Reception friendly and helpful. We were allocated site 7A, in the old section of the park. Slab on the wrong side so we parked on it and had dirt under the awning. Were going to stay 1 day but extended to three because Leszek was not well. We had previously stayed here in March 2006 on site 4A. Our site again was near the old amenities block which, as before, suffered from poor cleanliness. I am sure the build up of dirt and dust behind the toilet doors in the corners must be years old. I checked the new amenities block and found it better but again, there is a slow build up of dirt on the floor near the doors and in corners. Basic laundry in ok condition. The four pools are well maintained and when we were there all were full of people. In fact the park was booked out. A new large swimming pool has been built at the far end of the park and they were awaiting approvals before it can be opened. It looked really lovely. The new sites are even more squashed then the old ones – some people could not open their awnings. Our awning was 2 inches from our neighbours van but was ok. Good kiosk. Dump point. Car and caravan washing area. Neat, newly painted cabins. You really only come here for the pools. My main dislike is the cleanliness of the amenities and also that there are only two commercial bins for the whole large park - one at the entrance and the other at the far end of the park in the new area. People were putting their rubbish in the toilet bins, or in bags and boxes near the toilets, and who could blame them, as it is quite a distance to the bins. I am surprised that rubbish is not dumped everywhere as a protest. You would think that management would finally take the hint and provide a few more bins. Yes, we would probably stay here again, mainly for the pools. Luckily we have our own shower/toilet/washing machine so don't have to use their facilities. Moree is a lovely town with a very inviting main street and there is plenty to do and see.

Manager's name is Wal & Noelene McDonald. This park is a busy park as the result of the thermal pools. Our site was in the newer section of the park, which was very well grassed, but without any shade, and the sites were very long but very narrow, with hardly enough room for the van and annex. I don't know what was under the grass but it was almost impossible to hammer pegs into the ground. The new amenities block was spotless, the thermal pools were excellent, but the old moveable BBQ in our area was past its prime. Excellent meals at reasonable prices were available from the kiosk.

If not for the thermal pools would never stay there. The pools are great. Cramped reception meant that when more than 3 arrivals were waiting some had to stand outside until more room became available. Site assistance was not offered or available. Tourist information not offered, but there were pamphlets on the wall from which you could make your own arrangements. Had to request a town map. The two commercial rubbish bins - nothing else were all that was available for guests. Each was located at opposite ends of the park. Although one was placed closer to the newer sites. These new sites were in close proximity to the newer amenity block, which was quite clean, although along with the older amenities, no soap, dryer, paper towels were provided. In the pathetic older block there were blue/green stains on the hand basins and bath which appeared to be unused, probably because of the generally unclean appearance. There was an unused tennis court, in disrepair and a swimming pool, empty, full of leaves with a layer of green water in the bottom. The BBQ area adjacent to the thermal pools was unswept, with dirty greasy hot plates and only four plastic chairs also all dirty. This place has absolutely nothing going for it except the pools which were very popular. What a disappointment about the rest of the place.

Report submitted by Wandering Walls, NSW.

Stayed 2 days, $23.00p/n powered site. Poor reception. No tourist advice, nor information about the park. We were given a park map and told "choose your site and let me know the site number". Actually, this proved an excellent decision as some sites, although large and look drive through, are really level on one side of the road and fairly steep on the other making it impossible to use the site as a drive through, especially for large vans. So we backed into site 4A with little problem, and also had a little shade. But there are lots of level sites to choose from. We noticed that the park was being expanded with a new area opening up with lots of cabins and new amenities block. The amenities block closest to us and the pools, was old and in need of major refurbishment and thorough cleaning (we'd "rate" it 1). Toilets and showers need buckets of Domestos to get the built up grime off the floor, especially at the corners between the floor and the wall, and there were lots of spider webs and dead spiders behind the toilet doors. Yes, I agree that the thermal pools are the main attraction in this park, but there is no excuse for built up grime, especially as the areas should be cleaned every day. I watched the cleaner go into the laundry with his cleaning trolley and timed his cleaning time to under 3 minutes!!! Green muck from the amenities block was leaking from the bottom of the brickwork out of the toilet/showers block to the clothesline area. This park overall is reasonably tidy but the only big garbage hopper is located at the front gate - a great distance from all sites. No wonder some people put their wrapped garbage into the bathroom garbage tin. Travellers we spoke with said they were most disappointed with the state of the ablutions block and could not understand why the pool area was so spotless and the same could not be said for the ablutions. The managers of this park are obviously office bound. We never saw anyone working on site (except the 3 minute cleaner who drove around the park in his little buggy with L plates.). This park could be a wonderful park and the superb swimming area, with four spotless swimming pools and beautiful surrounds, proves this (we'd "rate" this area 5). It is a pity that the managers don't take pride in the ablution facilities. Moree has scrubbed up to be a lovely town and the helpful and friendly Information Office is worth a visit. We would return to this park, just for the thermal springs, but would again use our own van shower and toilet. I really wish I could write a better report about this park as it has such wonderful potential, but at this stage I cannot. I have read the previous reports and while some writers say that the amenities were clean, I cannot understand why the standard has dropped - perhaps they have changed cleaners? I look forward to reading future reports.

$23 per night powered site 2A. Some sites had concrete pads but many grassed &obviously drought affected. Amenities quite good & well maintained with well equipped camp kitchen incorporated into it. There is a small gas heated spa which was very popular at the time of our visit. All roads in the park are sealed & have "sensible" shallow concrete gutters at road edge. There are a couple of separate bbqs located in the park with nearby picnic seating & some playground equipment. There is security fencing right round & a gate in the back fence leads to the Mehi River about 50m away. Park visitors had caught a couple of perch while we were there. The trees provide good shade, the gardens & grounds are well maintained & night lighting is very good. There appear to be some permanents at the other end of the park. Management is friendly & helpful. On our recent long trip the price of fuel at Moree was much cheaper than anywhere else including Qld.

Non-drinking water also available to each site. Very good value at $15 a night 2A powered). Attached motel has swimming pool but drought has closed it (probably permanently). Amenity block is good, clean and all that can be expected. 2 pubs, offering good meals and a large servo selling everything plus a few historic buildings make Tibooburra an interesting place to visit. As the only caravan site within 150kms there is no other choice, however it is fine for a couple of nights to explore the area. Very friendly staff. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money.

Roonthebend Caravan Park, Walgett
Located 2 km north of Walgett off the Castlereagh Highway. Look for turn off to the right after crossing the Namoi River bridge if heading north. Ph: 02 6828 1771.
UPDATED REPORT NEEDED

This is obviously a former cattle/sheep property "Roonthebend Park" turned into other activities including a caravan park and camping area and a tree nursery. The amenities are the old stockman's quarters. This park would not suit the "resort" types but has a quiet country atmosphere. Only 15 powered sites available keeps it congenial. Walgett is less than an hour from Lightning Ridge and is an alternative base during busy festival times.

Warialda Caravan Park, Warialda
Corner of Holden Street & Gwydir Highway, 1 km west of post office. Ph: 02 6729 1295. Pets at manager's discretion.
This is a small council run caravan park and has a caretaker who calls around each night to collect the fees. Just drive in and select a site. There was a small spotless amenity block in the centre of the park and the laundry had cheap washing machines and a free dryer. Friendly staff. Price was higher than expected but reasonable value for money. We paid $18 2A with power including a senior's discount. We had hoped to pay less given it was a council park with no office, but we fear the days of very cheap council parks are disappearing. Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to all sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, dry change area, paper towels/dryer provided, exhaust fans/good ventilation. Adequate number of tourist sites, some unlevel sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Good laundry, late checkout allowed (up to noon). Quiet, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere. Clean UC electric bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere. No playground, no pool. Suitable for few days, well maintained park.
Likes: The park had a nice atmosphere and it was an easy walk to town.
Parking: Park in the side street beside the park.
Local Information: Warialda appeared to be a very nice small town.
Roads: Reasonable bitumen road north although narrow in places. Not much traffic on it.

Warrumbungles National Park, Warrumbungles
Camp Blackman Camping Area, 35 km west of Coonabarabran off Newell Highway. Coming from Gilgandra turn left to Tooraweenah and after about 10km turn right towards Warrumbungles National Park. After about another 30 km watch for the sign to the Visitors Centre (left turn). The road from the Newell Highway through Tooraweenah to Camp Blackman is now all sealed. The park can also be accessed from Coonabarabran. Newell Highway south in centre of Coonabarabran turn right to Siding Spring telescope (cannot drive to telescope with van/trailer on) continue past to Camp Blackman, all made roads.
Camp Blackman is in 2 sections, after you cross the creek crossing. To the right is the amenities block, UC electric BBQs with seating, and traditional tent camping area. To the left is the powered and unpowered camping/caravan sites, some with tables and seats. There is a single pit toilet block at one end. Depending where you set up there is plenty of shade. The powered sites are not marked - you park near a power pole as you wish.
There is now a new caravan parking area at the left of the road before the creek crossing to the old Camp Blackman. There are powered and unpowered sites including 7 drive-through sites for caravans. Most of the powered caravan sites are quite large and well separated from each other. No grass. All spaces have been covered with wood chips but a lot of new trees and bushes have been planted. There is also a new toilet facility having one ladies, one mens toilet plus one urinal. No new showers. The only problem is the water supply with only untreated water available, which has to be boiled for 3 minutes for drinking purposes. Only one water tap for the whole new area plus a couple more at the new toilets. So for a longer stay make sure your water tank is full with good drinking water. Ph: 02 6825 4364. No pets allowed.
Local Information: Great bushwalks, bike tracks, and lovely mountain views. Heaps of wildlife. Make sure you visit the Observatory. Never seen so many stars!! Siding Spring, free entry to rear of centre, or we arrived after closing and entered via unlocked gate near toilets. Some easy walks, some difficult - take water of course. Try some easy walks - breathtaking scenery. Or just sit back for a few days and listen to the wildlife.

In general the DECC has to be commended for this new facility. Well done! Friendly staff. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($20.00 2A per night, powered). Amenities are close to only some sites, cleanliness was average, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Mostly level sites, average sized sites, no sites with concrete annex slabs, shade to some sites, drive-through sites. Poor laundry, no rec room, late checkout allowed (up to noon). Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere, no permanents. Clean UC bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. No pool. Suitable for a week or more, suitable for families.
Likes: Lots of wildlife, kangaroos, emus, birds and the stars on clear night are almost unbelievable. This is a National Park and you go there to enjoy nature. Great to have a place like this.

Upon arrival to book in at the very elaborate National Park Headquarters we were ignored by the three staff members on duty. When we were finally attended to by one of the staff her attitude was quite rude and dismissive. We decided to have a unpowered site at $10.00 2A, due to the additional expense of a daily park fee of $7.00 per vehicle. A powered site is double the amount of an unpowered site. We considered a powered site poor value for money given no water to the van, drinking water or sullage is provided and the only shower/ flush toilet block is 200 metres away. Two small pit toilet blocks are provided near the powered sites. The shower block was clean but very old and badly in need of maintenance. Showers had 5 min timers. We noticed that some powered sites were over crowded as everyone needed to be around the few power poles. No site allocation given from the office. Very unfriendly staff, staff explained park layout and facilities. Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to only some sites, cleanliness was average, condition is poor, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, some unlevel sites, poor night lighting, average sized sites, drive-through sites, hard to negotiate into site, poor water quality. Poor laundry, no rec room. Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere, no permanents. Wood bbq (free). No playground, no pool. Suitable for few days.
Likes: The campground is in a pretty natural setting with lots of wildlife to observe. We consider the park worth a visit but perhaps only once due to the limitations mentioned.
Dislikes: Poor attitude of staff. Unacceptable distance to the shower block from many sites. Dry dusty sites. Old run down shower/toilet block yet money could be found to build a large expensive visitor centre/park headquarters.
Parking: Parking outside the park headquarters.
Local Information: Most walks in the national park require a drive from the campground. Some walks are very scenic.
Roads: Reasonable bitumen road from Coonabarabran.

Powered sites had good shade, although grassless and dusty underfoot, and there was a pit toilet in the powered site area that avoided the walk to the main amenities. Latter were clean and well looked after. Shower cubicles were roomy, had duckboards and showers worked on 5 minute timers – no coin in slot required. No mop, soap or paper towels or dryers provided. No laundry facility. TV reception brilliant as there is line of sight to transmitter. Frozen bread and some basic necessities available at Visitor Centre. Several new powered sites are under construction in a new camping area on other side of the creek, but there is not a scrap of shade there. Walk to Grand High Tops not to be missed for anyone with reasonable fitness – a bit of a slog but new stairs and pathways have improved the route, and the view is worth dying for! $16 2A reasonable value.

Yetman Camping Area, Yetman
This is a very small village in northern NSW, near the Qld border. They have set up a small camping area with good showers and toilets and a free washing machine at their sports oval and tennis courts. Powered sites are just $10 based on the honesty system – lovely quiet night. Top marks and great value for money!
