UPDATED REPORT NEEDED

Report on cabin accommodation. Originally we were put into a cabin (it was really a room) that shared kitchen facilities with a couple of similar cabins (dorm like) with a bed like a rock. This was overnight $59 per double. We complained about the cabin and chose an upgrade to a rather nice detached cabin with all facilities. This was $70 per double but the manager gave it to us for $65. It was quite clean on the whole but the full ashtray on the verandah made us wonder how clean. The bed in this cabin was very good. We would only stay there again overnight when travelling through. Good, friendly management. Reasonable value for money. Drive-through sites were available, quiet.
Likes: Elevated, short 5 min drive to town centre.
Dislikes: Quite a few shabby unused permanent vans gave the park a bad impression.
Local Information:. RSL has reasonable meals but a bit like a cafeteria
Park Rating 3: Suitable for a few days.

39 Waterfall Way, 1.5 km east of post office, just as you leave town. Ph: 02 6772 6470 or 1800 355 578. Top Tourist member. Pets at manager's discretion.
Nice park, with lovely ensuites, and tennis court and well maintained. Friendly staff. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($32.40 A1 per night, ensuite, shoulder season), condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, large sites, concrete annex slabs to most sites, shade to most sites, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by, good camp kitchen. Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere, no permanents. Dirty gas bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. Suitable for few days, well maintained park.
Likes: Nice big drive thru ensuite sites, large ensuites, Nice green park, not too far from town
Dislikes: The BBQ was used Friday night and left in a filthy state, and still dirty Sunday evening.
Local Information: Few things to do but I was there for an agility trial. There is a tram tour but I had to leave and couldn't go on it.
Roads: Good road, windy in places but well maintained and a bit bumpy

Brilliant park with lovely grassed sites, floodlit tennis courts and trees of all colours of the rainbow. Not very clean ablutions spoilt it a bit though. Absolutely gorgeous park with tennis court, lovely sites, friendly management and great facilities. Cleanliness in amenities very poor, so very disappointed as spoilt a really top destination. Friendly staff. Price was as expected. Amenities were dirty, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Clean UC electric bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere. Suitable for month or longer.
Likes: Terrific park - lovely trees, pond, grassy sites
Dislikes: Really badly cleaned amenities - wore shoes to shower!
Local Information: Lovely pretty town, free tour provided by council every day of year (except Christmas day) brilliant! Town has so many things to see and the drives nearby to waterfalls etc were brilliant. One of our favourite destinations in the year we've been in the van.

We paid for a spa cabin and got nothing close to a spa, the bathroom door didn't close properly, the cabin was extremely small. The bedside radio was not able to turn off and buzzed all night, the internet was a complete rip off, and the staff member didn't seem very bright at all. The television wasn't watchable unless you are standing up, as it's a LCD screen that isn't adjustable. Average staff friendliness, bad staff response to complaints. Price was higher than expected, poor value for money ($135 2A C3, ensuite, off-peak season). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to only some sites, were dirty, condition is poor, water pressure is bad, there was adequate hot water, soap provided. Basic laundry, no rec room, dump point. Quiet, claustrophobic park, not enough shade. Clean pool is open to the sun, pool area not considered kid-safe. Suitable for overnighter.
Likes: It was large in area.
Dislikes: Pretty much everything
Local Information: I will never visit again
Roads: roads were all tar sealed and ok

The park had some nice features, but everything seemed a bit run down. Good management, friendly management, management responsive to comments, management was helpful. Reasonable value for money. Likes: There's plenty of room and a nice rural setting about 3 minutes from the centre.
Dislikes: Nothing really, but the amenities can be cold - large and unheated. Everything seemed to work and there is paid internet connection available.
Local Information: Heaps of things to do around Armidale - we stayed a week or so.
Roads: The approach from the east has a good bitumen surface, but there are a couple of sharp pinches coming up the range.

Large well maintained Top Tourist Park with cabins, en-suite, powered and unpowered sites and a large well grassed camping area. Courteous reception, old to select any site we liked, but no offer of information on park or city sights. A large permanent population occupied one end of the park, with tourist sites at the other. Powered sites were roomy, many with annexe pads, and good water to them. Three amenities blocks in park, clean and well maintained. Paper towels provided but no soap. Showers had plentiful hot water and were curtained, but no mats or mop provided. Large covered camp kitchen and barbecue area, swimming pool and tennis court, playground and a well stocked kiosk at reception. Internet facilities including wireless. Reasonably well lit and quiet at night. Powered site $25 for 2 adults before discount average value.

Barraba Caravan Park, Barraba
Located in Bridge Street, 500m north of the Post Office heading to north to Bingara, or on the left just over the bridge if headed south. Ph: 02 6782 1818. Dogs on leash.
Manager Bob & Chris Richardson. Management is very friendly and Bob loves to have a chat if you have the time. Park located on the main road but the road is not very busy. Plenty of trees for shade. Park was fairly busy but management let people choose their own sites. All grass sites and fairly level. Management have brought the former Council park up from 0 Stars to 3 Stars. Very friendly staff, good staff response to complaints, staff offered tourist advice, van parking assistance provided by staff, staff helped us at the site, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, good value for money ($15 2A C per night for a powered site). Blue Lagoon Beach Resort, Bateau Bay
Bateau Bay Road. From the F3 at Tuggarah, turn onto Wyong Road. Continue on about 12km thru 15 roundabouts (yes 15). Turn right onto Central Coast Highway then first left onto Yakalla Street. Follow to end & turn right onto Bateau Bay Road. It's then a sharp left about 500m down a steep incline into the park. It's signposted on Bateau Bay Road. Ph: 02 4332 1447 or 1800 680 036. Pets not allowed.
Very friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice, van parking assistance provided by staff, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($36 2A, powered, off-peak season). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is very good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, paper towels/dryer provided. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, small sites, concrete annex slabs to most sites, very few sites are shaded, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Good laundry, good rec room, kiosk, secure entry, van parking. Peaceful, open & roomy park, not enough shade, family/friendly atmosphere, no permanents. Clean UC electric bbq ($1 for 20 mins), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. Good playground in good condition. Clean heated pool is shaded, kid-safe pool area, tables and chairs provided, toddlers catered for. Suitable for month or longer, suitable for families, well maintained park, park is considered kid-safe.
Likes: Close to Beach. Great heated pool & spa complex. Close to bush walks. Open & quiet. Amenities spotlessly clean but old. Neat & tidy grounds with good grass cover.
Dislikes: Poor TV reception because there are steep escarpments on 3 sides of the park. If at the northern end of the park antenna needs to point south with vertical orientation (to Forresters Beach). If at southern end of the park antenna needs to point back to Newcastle (Mount Sugarloaf) with horizontal orientation. Tried with digital & non-digital signal but could not get channel Nine (and it was NRL state of origin night). ABC & SBS were poor. Seven & Ten were OK. No cabins had TV antennas & the lady at the park office said that all cabins have a cable system for the TV but no advice/facilities offered/available to caravanners.
Parking: Dedicated waiting bay with separate boom gate
Local Information: Fish & chip shop on Bateau Bay Rd had good quality & cheap fish & chips.

Bonny Hills Caravan Park, Bonny Hills
Manager's name is Judith and Len Hancock Ocean Drive. This is the road from North Haven to Lake Cathie. From the South turn left at the roundabout outside the Bowling Club in North Haven and the park is on the right opposite the General Store / Servo on the northern side of Bonny Hills. Ph: 02 6585 5276. Pets at manager's discretion, on leash.
This park is right on the headland and the views are spectacular. We watched the whales heading north from our site. The sites are very steep. In fact the van behind us had to have the Caravan drawbar right on the ground with no jockey wheel. Also be careful manipulating in the northern end of the park, a van scraped its side on the retaining wall as the road is very narrow. We had difficulty manoeuvring on to our site as there is not a lot of space to do so. Best to check out your site before you head to it as the roads in the park are one way and not easy to negotiate. Friendly staff, average staff response to complaints, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($21.00 2A per night). Inadequate number of amenities, are close to only some sites, cleanliness was average, condition is poor, water pressure is good. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly unlevel sites, poor night lighting, small sites, hard to negotiate into site, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Basic laundry, no rec room, late checkout allowed (up to noon), dump point, van parking. Noisy, open & roomy park, not enough shade, no permanents. Clean UC gas bbq (pay), bbq area lighting. No pool.
Likes: The views are what makes the park otherwise we probably would not have stayed. The cabins in the park are very good and have great views.
Dislikes: Sites at the back of the park are adjacent to the road and can be noisy during the day. Park does have some problems with rowdy teens at times and the Police were patrolling the road outside the park on the Saturday night due to some drunken teens. Also the main drive through the park was once a public road and as such still is the Manager has no control over people walking through the park. Luckily we had onboard facilities otherwise we would have moved on as the amenities were of a very low standard. Had to manipulate the van without assistance which was difficult due to the slope and tightness of space. Also this would not be a good place to be in a heavy southerly wind due to being right on the headland with no protection, but bear in mind that that is what gives the park such great views.
Parking: Parking at the front of the office to book in adequate.
Local Information: North Haven has a spectacular lookout and was worth the drive. The take away food at the store across from the park was quite good. The Rainbow Beach adjacent to the park was good and would be great if you are into surfing.
Date 05/2008. Park Rating 2.5: Suitable for few days.

UPDATED REPORT NEEDED

Being the off season we fairly much had a pick of sites and easy access to all facilities. Adequate playground for our kids, however some maintenance to the timber is needed. Undercover BBQ area is good, however the charge of $1 for 30 minutes seemed a bit 'penny pinching' when council provides free BBQs in their parks usually. Amenity blocks were clean and tidy, provision of a full size bath was great for our two young kids. Staff were very friendly, $20 for 2 adults and two kids under 4 for a powered site was reasonable, however I believe the cost is a lot dearer in peak times. Very friendly staff, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected. Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is very good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, drive-through sites. Good laundry, good rec room. Quiet, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere. Clean UC gas bbq ($1 for 30 min), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. Good playground in average condition. Clean pool is open to sun, kid-safe pool area, tables and chairs provided. Suitable for families, well maintained park.

Bretti Reserve Camping Area, Bretti
On Thunderbolts way between Nowendoc and Gloucester. Large free camping area beside the Manning River. Some shaded areas beside river. Steep, sealed descent into the site. Some undercover picnic tables and wood BBQs, but limited wood available. Unpowered sites.
Likes: This is a pretty camping area especially if you can get a spot by the river.
Roads: Thunderbolts Way requires caution when towing a van with winding steep ascents/descents between Nowendoc and Barrington.

CMCA Motorhome Village, Casino
69 Light Street. If coming from the south, turn right just before the water tower. Ph: 02 6662 1069. All pets allowed, on leash.
Unfriendly staff, bad staff response to complaints, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was lower than expected, reasonable value for money ($114 2A per week powered). Inadequate number of amenities, are close to only some sites, were dirty, condition is poor, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, paper towels/dryer provided, exhaust fans/good ventilation, disabled facilities. Adequate number of tourist sites, some unlevel sites, poor night lighting, average sized sites, drive-through sites. Basic laundry, good rec room, late checkout allowed (up to noon), good camp kitchen, dump point, secure entry, van parking. Noisy, open & roomy park, not enough shade. UC gas bbq (free), dismal bbq area atmosphere. No playground. Clean pool is shaded, kid-safe pool area, tables and chairs provided. Suitable for a week or more.
Likes: It is about the only park in Casino. Some of the garden areas are good and the trees will add shade when mature.
Dislikes: Supposed to be a show piece, not one concrete slab in park. Sites either gravel or boggy grass. The toilets/showers are a disgrace, don't shower unless you wear rubber boots. Mould and slime on floor and walls. Complaints to management met with negative response. Huge park with inadequate ablutions for the numbers using them. One amenities block not open even though park almost full. 2 washing machines and too many people wanting to use them. People here are so unfriendly, one group of travellers treating caravanners etc like garbage. Some gravel roads and most sites are very boggy after rain. Although this is a huge park, maintenance is carried out right in the middle of travellers, early and noisy. No supplies available as there is no kiosk even for the most basic items.
Added Touches: Restaurant in club house which is soon to close.

This has to be our favourite park in Australia. Everything is top rate, beautiful grounds, great amenities, plenty of social activities such as happy hour, movies, RV seminars. This park was designed for all RVers by RVers. Variety of sites including drive through, standard powered and even a large bush camping area. Very friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice, van parking assistance provided by staff, staff helped us at the site, staff explained park layout and facilities. Very good value for money ($15 2A per night powered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is very good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, dry change area, paper towels/dryer provided, exhaust fans/good ventilation. Adequate number of tourist sites, all level sites, good night lighting, large sites, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Good laundry, good rec room, good camp kitchen, disabled facilities, car wash, dump point, van parking. Peaceful, open and roomy, family/friendly atmosphere. Clean UC gas bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. No playground. Clean pool is shaded, tables and chairs provided. Suitable for month or longer, well maintained park.
Likes: Large park with a variety of types of sites. Plenty of social activities are included. Stay for a week, pay for 6 nights. Large dog off-leash area.
Parking: Area beside office makes parking for check in easy.
Added Touches: Camp oven fire, communal BBQ, disc bowls, on site basic pitch and putt type golf course.

Valley Vineyard Tourist Park, Cessnock
On Mount View Road approx 2km from town, located on the outskirts of The Hunter Valley vineyards. Ph: 02 4990 2573 or 1800 649 156. BIG4 member. No pets allowed.
Seems to be the only park close to the wineries. We were given some information on the area from reception, but better to visit Information Centre. There is a mish-mash of accommodation - various cabin types, ensuites for vans, slabs and tent sites and some permanents. The park looks generally untidy, although some effort has been started with small gardens and grape vines planted. Amenities did not cope at all over the busy weekend, but much better for the next couple of days of our stay. Amenities needed to be cleaned more often and bins emptied. Were nice and clean when we arrived - have paper towels, soap, showers have dry area and good shower nozzles. Always object to paying to use the BBQ - it should be included as part of the cost of staying. We use our own electric grill in these cases, so no extra cost to us. Camp kitchen basic, laundry OK. Swimming pool area has shade and seating, but loose tiles could be dangerous.
Likes: Close to wineries.
Dislikes: Run down, old park. With so much beautiful accommodation in the Hunter Valley, it is such a shame that there is not something nice for caravaners. This area needs a resort style park.

Average staff friendliness, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($25 2A per night powered, off-peak period). Inadequate number of amenities, are close to only some sites, were clean, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, some level sites, good night lighting, small sites, very few concrete annex slabs, very few sites are shaded, hard to negotiate into site. Good laundry, basic rec room. Noisy, not enough shade, a few permanents. Clean UC gas bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting. Dirty pool is shaded, kid-safe pool area, toddlers catered for. Suitable for few days.
Likes: Located close to the vineyards. Essentially a flat site but poorly set out. Sites are very close has great potential but needs a lot of work.
Dislikes: I can't believe this park is one of the BIG4 Star ratings. Looks very tired. The paving around the pool is very loose and there is black spot in the pool.
Parking: Parking is adequate for booking in.
Local Information: Very poor information on local activities attractions & information. The front office is very basic. The shop front has next to nothing as far as food & personal items.
Roads: Dirt roads very basic not much room to manoeuvre a big van for such a beautiful area could be so much more.

We had a Ensuite site, but it took some time to work out the caravan position. Most ensuite sites had the facilities on the wrong side. Complex slab layout on some (certainly the one we had). Ask for one which has ensuite on passenger side. Facilities were older style, & clean. Good management, friendly management, management responsive to comments Poor value for money. Average amenities. Average sites, hard to negotiate in to/out of site. Laundry, rec room, kiosk, security entry to park. Park atmosphere was okay, quiet, shady park. Clean bbq (free). Very good clean pool, seating around the pool was provided. Suitable for overnighter, the park was well maintained.
Likes: Close to vineyards. The park has a great BYO Thai restaurant. Very good food & value.
Dislikes: Caravan area not as open as it should have been. We didn't think it was up to the 3.5 star rating or BIG4 standard.

We stayed in the cabins that are basic with separate on suites - the pools (main pool and spa) and lap pool were excellent with good shade cover in pool area. The park is close to the vineyards and Cessnock that has an excellent range of supermarkets restaurants and shops. The park is used extensively by backpackers in the fruit-picking season and the area at the back of the park is set aside for them. The rest of the park is quiet and suitable for families. There is a Thai restaurant in the reception area of the caravan park. Friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, good value for money ($260 2A per week cabin). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is very good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, concrete annex slabs, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Clean electric UC bbq (pay), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. Good playground in good condition. Clean pool is shaded, kid-safe pool area, tables and chairs provided. Suitable for a week or more, well maintained park.
Likes: The swimming pools and the general feel of the park.

Diamond Beach Caravan Park, Diamond Beach
UPDATED REPORT NEEDED

It would be hard to find a caravan park with more to offer than this one - absolute beach frontage, a wide range of accommodation choices from luxury villas to tent sites, excellent facilities, a variety of shops at a nearby village, and very helpful and friendly camping ground proprietors. The park is easy to locate off the Pacific Highway, a short distance north of Forster. Jim and Donna King are the managers and they work very hard to please their guests and maintain the high standards of their park. All sites are very close to the beach. As you would expect, the luxury beach-front villas are the closest. Two short paths (25 metres or so) provide access from the park to Diamond Beach, a magnificent stretch of pristine golden sand and surf. Do not be put off by the number of permanent sites. Most are occupied only during holiday times by bona fide holiday makers, but otherwise remain vacant. Facilities are excellent, clean and well maintained. Electric BBQs are plentiful, and scattered around the park. Each BBQ has a paper towel dispenser, in addition to free implements. A $1 coin in the slot operates the BBQs. This is something that I am opposed to, as I believe that there should be free use of BBQs at all camping grounds. However, this is a minor grumble. Ablution blocks and the laundry are clean. Toilet and shower cubicles are plentiful. Neither codes nor keys are required to gain access to these areas. This is something that I applaud. A games room is at one end of a large building, with a camp kitchen at the other. The games room contains a table tennis table and a variety of pinball machines, together with a large TV, comfortable lounge suites, etc. Outdoor games include tennis and put-put golf. The camp kitchen contains a full size fridge, microwave, crockery, etc. The playground is of an excellent standard, and the solar heated saltwater pool and spa are clean and inviting. Our powered site cost us $44.00 for two nights. We were provided with a clear site plan of the park, together with written rules and instructions and we had no difficulty locating our site or parking our campervan on a concrete slab. Power, water and a permanent sun shelter were conveniently nearby. Also nearby (an easy walk of 200 metres from the park) are a set of village shops including a butcher, newsagent, coffee shop, baker and take-away food shop. The nearby Hallidays Point Tavern offers lunches and dinners, with a courtesy bus available from 6.00pm Wednesdays to Saturdays. This park is situated among very attractive and well established native trees and shrubs, which attract all manner of birds, particularly at mornings and evenings. This is another positive feature of this particularly appealing caravan park. There is absolutely no traffic noise here.

Diamond Waters Caravan Park, Dunbogan
Between Taree and Port Macquarie. Diamond Head Road, 2 kms south of Laurieton. At Kew, turn east off the Pacific Highway and follow Ocean Drive into the township of Laurieton. Drive through the centre of Laurieton to the Dunbogan Bridge, cross over the Camden Haven River and swing right along Diamond Head Road and the river. Ph: 02 6559 9334.
Very friendly owners Todd and Sally Mulheron. Shown to site and as we had stayed there before there was no need to seek local information. Park stretches between road and shores of Camden Haven River and is virtually in two parts Top part is mainly occupied by permanents, weekenders and on-site vans, but there are several well grassed sites for tourists, some with slabs. All sites are level, with good water provided but no sullage points and limited shade. Roads in upper area are sealed. Lower part of park stretches to river and has some powered but mainly unpowered sites, also well grassed, set among trees and very shady. Amenities are in the upper part, so there is a fair walk from the lower sites. Amenities are modern and spotlessly maintained, some of the best we have seen. Showers are sensibly designed and have curtains and a sill to prevent water splashing into dressing area; they lack only a floor mat. Plentiful hot water, but no soap or mop provided. No pool, but there is swimming in the lake and the beach is about 15 minutes walk or 3 minutes drive away. Very attractive barbecue area (free) and playground are located in the upper park, with another barbecue area and a boat ramp in lower area. There is a small kiosk in reception. Excellent mobile phone and TV reception. Upper area is well lit at night. $2 for two people on powered site considered good value.
Likes: Quiet location in a bushland setting, but still close to town.
Dislikes: Piped radio in amenities with a particularly banal commercial station. Why park proprietors think their guests need or want this facility is beyond us!
Date 03/2007. Park Rating 4.5: Suitable for short or long stay.

Manager Todd and Sally. The park is right next to the Crowdy Head National park, with plenty of opportunities for swimming, fishing and bush walking There are powered sites with concrete slabs in the upper section, but my favourites are those in the lower shady parkland setting on the waterfront of the Camden Haven estuary. Very friendly staff, good staff response to complaints. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money. Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to only some sites, were clean, condition is very good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, large sites, concrete annex slabs, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by. Good laundry, basic rec room. Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere. Dogs on leash. Clean free gas bbq in congenial UC bbq area. Basic playground in good condition. No pool. A well maintained park, park is considered kid-safe.
Likes: The situation of the park is prefect on the waterfront of the Camden Haven estuary but still only a few minutes to a well serviced shopping centre at Laurieton.
Dislikes: It can be a long walk to the amenities from the sites at the bottom of the park

This park advertises very well, but does not present at the same level. Lots of facilities but a gloomy atmosphere. At least, that's what we felt. Lot of permanent vans and corrugated iron "add ons" that give a very claustrophobic atmosphere. Also many cabins etc. Feel like an intruder in with a caravan. Friendly staff, average staff response to complaints Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($25 2A per night, powered, off-peak season). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to only some sites, were clean, condition is very good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, dry change area, paper towels/dryer provided, exhaust fans/good ventilation, disabled facilities. Inadequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, very few concrete annex slabs, very few sites are shaded, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Basic laundry, basic rec room, kiosk, disabled facilities, secure entry. Quiet, claustrophobic park, plenty of shade, too many permanents. UC electric bbq (pay), bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. Good playground in average condition. Clean pool is shaded, kid-safe pool area, tables and chairs provided. Suitable for a week or more, suitable for families.
Likes: Not a lot really. Good walk for dogs to island through nice, small, waterways. Probably good park for anglers or families.
Dislikes: Claustrophobic atmosphere and "shanty town" feel of the place.

This is one of the best parks we have stayed in. First visited in August 2006, and have just returned for four nights. Entry is via a tree shaded avenue up to security boom gate. There are a number of well kept permanent vans near the front of the park and quite a large number of cabins of various size and style (including some dog friendly cabins), then a large area for travellers. Good roomy sites including immaculate ensuite sites. As we were there shortly after the Christmas peak there were patches where the grass was worn but generally there is excellent coverage. A number of sites have concrete slabs. There are a number of bbq areas and a large excellent camp kitchen and entertainment area, three swimming pools and a kids playground. There is a large grassed area near the lagoon, and beyond the lagoon a large island is available for those wishing to bush camp. Management is very friendly. On site tourist information and shop and internet facilities. Wireless internet coming soon. We were shown to our site and assisted with parking. Very pet friendly. Park is immaculate, cabins spotless and permanent areas well kept.

We had booked into this park for an ensuite powered site. On arrival at the front the park looked a little untidy so we parked on the road and walked in. The park is absolutely full of cabins and permanent and semi permanents caravans in various states of repair. We made our way to the tourist area and found that there was no grass just some weeds growing spasmodically around the area. The sites were surrounded by permanent vans, which looked very untidy, and a poor state of repair. This is not a tourist park for caravanners. The park does not deserve its AAA 4 star rating.

Manager Mark Betts. At a time when powered sites are so often being removed, it's great to see new ones being built - 40 of them right next to the lake at Piper's Bay on what was previously a camping area. Very large, flat sites with power, sullage and Austar connections in the power box with marvellous views over the water. The sites are serviced by two small amenities blocks, like two double en-suites with keypad locks - four in all, and an easy to use dump point. However the laundry is quite a walk away at a traditional amenity block servicing an older but very well kept part of the park that is mainly permanents. New cabins have been built on older powered sites and there are 39 camp sites near the new powered sites, so amenities would be really stretched at peak times. A near perfect park for self-contained Grey Nomads, the basic kids playground and lack of toddlers pool may limit appeal if you have kids in tow. Very friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice and van parking assistance, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, very good value for money ($27 2A per night). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is very good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, dry change area, paper towels/dryer provided, exhaust fans/good ventilation. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, large sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Good laundry, basic rec room, late checkout allowed (up to noon), kiosk, dump point. Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere. Clean electric bbq in congenial UC area, lighting, seating provided. Basic playground in good condition. Clean pool is shaded, pool area not considered kid-safe, tables and chairs provided. A well maintained park.
Likes: Quiet location away from noise of central Forster tourist area - very commercial but lots to see and do.
Added Touches: Boat ramp (small boats), boat washing area, fish cleaning tables, basketball court.
Roads: Be aware that road to Forster from the north from the Pacific Highway is quite good, but the Lakes Way from the south - although a pretty drive - is slow and winding with broken edges in many areas. If you have a big rig might be best avoided.

Manager Darren Agnew. A fantastic park for children. There are organised activities during school holidays including a magic show, karaoke, disco, plaster painting bingo and movie nights. Also a full service restaurant during school holidays. A very large Park which has water frontage and beautiful trees. A fantastic holiday for the whole family. The Park has a Pirate theme which works well with the kids. Features too numerous to mention. You have to see it to believe it. Management are excellent and very friendly. Likes: It presents beautifully. So much for the kids to do all day long which made our stay a lot more relaxing.
Added Touches: all of the entertainment for children. It went all the time. Kept the kids busy and having a good time. Shop was well catered for. The "Goodos" restaurant had a fantastic selection of hot meals and was very cheap. We ate there every night so I didn't have to cook. Everything in the park is maintained to a very high standard.

This park is not for all tastes. It is handy to the Gloucester Tops section of the Barrington Tops National Park, where there are some nice walks. The park is essentially a collection of permanent onsite van/shacks which are used as weekenders. If you want a powered site, you will be placed in front of one of these shacks. The better thing to do is to go unpowered. There is a hill in the middle of the property where you can set up where you like. The view from the hill is great. It overlooks the bulk of the camp and the mountains surrounding. The loudest noise during the day is the sound of bell-birds. The river has a couple of lovely swimming holes, reasonably deep, rocky bottom and clear. Amenities were not new, but were clean and had plenty of hot water. Water is straight from the river and not treated - signs advise to boil water - we used our tank water for personal consumption. Fees reasonable - $6.50 per adult. Campfires permitted. The owners were friendly and helpful. The shack dwellers were not unfriendly but not welcoming either.

Very friendly staff, good staff response to complaints, staff offered tourist advice, van parking assistance provided by staff, staff explained park layout and facilities. We utilised a powered ensuite site for the duration of our stay, the ensuite was very clean, tidy and roomy, which accounts for the extra per night cost. Water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Price was as expected, good value for money ($72 2A 2C per night powered ensuite). Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, concrete annex slabs, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Basic laundry, basic rec room, dump point. Quiet, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere. Clean UC electric bbq, congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. Good playground in good condition. Clean heated pool is open to sun, kid-safe pool area, tables and chairs provided, toddlers catered for. Suitable for a week or more, suitable for families, well maintained park, park is considered kid-safe.
Likes: During the school holiday period the park runs a holiday program which was thoroughly enjoyed by both children and parents alike. Unfortunately we had over 300mm of rain during our 10 day stay which surprisingly didn't detract from our holiday. There is an area set up called the "Kids Nook" which is an all weather play area for the children, whilst the kids play parents are able to enjoy a coffee and cake from the coffee shop which is located at the same area.
Parking: There was ample parking at reception when checking in and out.
Added Touches: The park has a train which runs around the park 3 times a day at a cost of 50c per person. On checking in we were given enough complimentary tickets to keep the children occupied with one trip per day. The school holiday program was so good that when we ventured from the park for the day the children couldn't wait to get back. Imagine how hard it was for them when we packed up to come home.
Local Information: Over our 10 day holiday there was some breaks in the rain that allowed us to enjoy some of the local sites. I recommend a cruise on the "Amaroo Dolphin Watch Cruise". The crew were very friendly and were of great assistance when a couple of members of the family discovered that they suffer sea sickness. The sand dunes located at the beach in Forster were a great time out for all who dared to utilise their "Boogie" board to slide down the dunes. The Forster shopping strip was also a great place to spend some time relaxing.
Roads: The roads in the area are in a bad state of repair and broke up really quickly in the wet conditions. Care needs to be taken on Blackhead Road, within the last 2km prior to reaching the park, as the road has patches on the patches and is rough in places with some decent sized potholes which have the potential to cause some front end damage if hit at speed.

Located several kilometres off the Lakes Way in a growing holiday and residential area north of Forster. Very large and well maintained BIG4 park with large areas of cabins, overnight vans and permanent residents. Absolute beach frontage, the park is separated from the water only by a band of trees with access paths through them. Powered sites are grouped together near the beach, with good water and sullage. Most sites sloped slightly, were grassed with no pads and there were a handful of pull-throughs. The grass was in generally poor condition from lack of rain, and away from the beach-front sites, which had morning shade, there was little other shade. Amenities were central to all sites and were spotless, with soap and dryer provided. Shower cubicles were roomy, with curtains but no mat. Water was hot but pressure rather poor. No mop was provided. Adequacy of amenities near visitor sites would however be taxed at holiday periods, although a larger block is situated elsewhere in the park. Park is ideal for holidays, with huge pool, huge children's playground, recreation hall and separate children's hall, and a poolside restaurant in season. Other facilities include coin operated barbecues, tennis, bowling, volleyball and basketball courts. Kiosk in reception. Recycling centre but no dump point sighted. Good TV and mobile phone reception, well lit at night. Tariff of $26 before BIG4 discount considered reasonable if one used all the facilities, but starting to get steep for those who just want a powered site and amenities. Price would be substantially higher in holiday season.

Good amenities, adequate number to cater for tourists, close to sites, were clean, were in good condition, water pressure was okay, there was adequate hot water. Average sites, adequate number of tourist sites, sites were level, lighting at night was adequate, the site size was okay, annexe slabs were available, drive-through sites were available, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Laundry, late checkout allowed (up to noon), good camp kitchen, disabled facilities, car wash, dump point, security entry to park, van parking by management. Good atmosphere to park, quiet, open and roomy park, shady park, family-friendly park. Dogs are now allowed in the park under supervision, so they don't eat the white rabbit that runs freely. Clean UC electric bbq, with a congenial atmosphere, lit at night, with seating provided. Good playground in good condition. Clean pool area is shaded, kid-safe pool area, seating around the pool was provided. Suitable for month or longer, suitable for families, the park was well maintained, the park can be considered kid-safe.
Likes: Within walking distance for oldies to everything.
Parking: Off street within the boundaries.
Local Information: Excellent fishing from the sea and river breakwalls, the beach at Crowdy Head and Harrington, and outside fishing, at Crowdy Head, if you own a boat or can cadge a lift. There is a new wharf and pontoon at the river boat ramp. The bakery in Harrington Waters estate village shopping centre, is about 1 km on the left from town on the road back out, and worth the drive for fresh bread and rolls to go with your fresh seafood from the newly renovated Crowdy Head Fisherman's Co-op. Go up to Pilot Hill in the centre of town for a very exceptional panoramic view north and south, and the historic graves of the lighthouse keepers. Visit the Coastal Patrol "boys" at the breakwall junction, who willingly show you their domain, and explain their duties to you. The garage next to the park has "munchies", drinks and ice creams for the snack attack.
Roads: Excellent road, recently upgraded. A few roundabouts near town to slow you down.

We bush camped on the right hand side of the lake. After leaving the office and boom gates turn right down the dirt road which takes you around the lake. You can camp anywhere you want around this side of the lake. There is no power or water, just bush camping close to the water or further back in the trees. There are good clean toilet block spread around the lake, just a short drive from where you can camp but no showers except some cold showers on the outside of one block. Water is available back in the picnic area in the main park area. There is also a kiosk there and fuel available in that area. On the weekend the lake is quite busy with skiers and fishermen, but during the week we were alone, could not see another camper and the lake was empty. Over in the main section of the park has a great playground and a wading pool, what looks like a good camp kitchen and a laundry. In this area there are electric bbqs and undercover seating, powered and unpowered sites and cabins. No dogs are allowed in the main camping area/caravan park area of the park but you can have dogs in the bush camping section (on leash). The length of time this bush camping area is suitable for would depend on your own individual ability to camp without power and water nearby. Overall the park seems to be very well maintained. A ranger came by and took our rubbish away and left us a new garbage bag. The roads in this area are all dirt tracks, but at the time of our visit they were in excellent condition. Very friendly staff, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, good value for money ($11.00 2A per night, unpowered, shoulder season).

Reception was very friendly and accommodating. The camp kitchen closes at 10.15pm, so if you want anything out of the fridge after that time you are out of luck, also the amentities would be woefully inadequate for anymore than a dozen or so campers with only 3 showers and 3 toilets in each the men's and women's, I can't imagine how everyone copes with all 90 sites occupied. That said the park was peaceful and roomy due to being out of season and everything was close to our site. Very friendly staff, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, good value for money ($20 2A 2C per night powered). Amenities are close to most sites, were clean, condition is very good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, paper towels/dryer provided. Adequate number of tourist sites, some unlevel sites, poor night lighting, average sized sites, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by. Basic laundry, no rec room, late checkout allowed (past noon), good camp kitchen. Peaceful, open & roomy park, not enough shade, family/friendly atmosphere. Clean $1 electric bbq in congenial UC area, lighting, seating provided. Basic playground in average condition. Clean pool. A well maintained park, park is considered kid-safe.
Likes: Separate baby bathroom was great. It was pretty empty so it was really roomy.
Dislikes: At night, the light in the baby bathroom worked off the corridor sensor, so you would have to keep reactivating it. The camp kitchen was hosed out each morning and everything was left drenched.
Added Touches: There is a boat ramp and fish cleaning within the State Park.

Reception at park entrance, some way from sites, with boom gate. Friendly reception, site layout explained. Large caravan and camping park, well maintained. No permanents, as they are housed in a separate park several hundred metres away. Sites all grassed, although suffering from many months of dry weather at time of visit. No annexe pads, some sites sloping, very limited shade although this will improve as trees grow. Sealed access roads. All powered sites had good water connected. Large areas of unpowered sites and campsites, some with lake frontage. Amenities immaculately clean and well maintained, although no soap or paper towels or dryers provided. Plentiful hot water. Changing area in shower cubicles ridiculously cramped, necessitating dressing outside the cubicle. Amenities could be stretched at peak times. Dump point for toilets. Good night lighting. Large camp kitchen, barbecues, children's playground, tennis courts, toilet dump point. Kiosk on site, open 7 days a week, with takeaway meals and boat, bicycle and tennis racquet hire. Fishing (licence required) and various water sports available on recreational lake, 5 hole golf course in park. $19 2A reasonable value.

This is a nice park, right on the lake. I arrived late at night, and found a site and paid the next morning. It is dog friendly and a lovely path around the lake to walk the dogs and also the dogs can swim in the lake. The sites are a reasonable size and was quite easy to get into. The ones with concrete pads were a bit harder. Nice big amenities block which needs a key. The view from most sites is great and the water isn't too far from any site. Friendly staff. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($22 A1 per night , powered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is poor, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided. Manager's name is Carolyn and Paul Afflick. The office was very busy. We had an "A" class site (absolute waterfront) but ours was the only one which was not level, and despite being cut into the hillside, had no retaining wall. The site was poorly prepared and the taps out of reach for our hose. The cost was more than we expected, having checked the website before booking. On re-checking the website is poorly designed, as the additional fees were on the webpage, but easily missed due to the design. The park was heavily booked, and we were reluctant to move part way through our stay to accommodate a previous booking, however, the manager tried hard to find an acceptable solution for us. Average staff friendliness, average staff response to complaints, van parking assistance provided by staff, staff helped us at the site, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was higher than expected, good value for money ($34 2A per night powered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, were clean, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, separate bathroom, soap provided, paper towels/dryer provided. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, average sized sites. Good laundry, no rec room, late checkout allowed (past noon), disabled facilities, secure entry, van parking. Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere. Clean UC gas bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. Clean pool. Suitable for a week or more, suitable for families, well maintained park.
Likes: Absolute waterfront, facing west towards exquisite sunsets, large grassy areas dog friendly the assistance getting onto the site
Dislikes: the number of people with unleashed dogs; the poorly prepared site we were given; the need to move to another site (without view) partway through our visit.

This park can be quite noisy at times. Park rules prohibiting noise or disturbance after 10 pm did not seem to be enforced. Manager Rick and Cathy Ware. Take turn into Wangi from Morisset to Toronto road, turn to shops and follow road for 2.5km, voila! There it is, hugging the lake and totally secluded. Suitable for any length of stay, but bookings are essential, like all of the caravan parks around the lake, they are fully booked during holiday times, and all through summer. Very friendly staff, good staff response to complaints, staff offered tourist advice. Price was as expected, very good value for money ($98 2A per week powered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to all sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, dry change area, paper towels/dryer provided, exhaust fans/good ventilation, disabled facilities. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, concrete annex slabs, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Good laundry, no rec room, late checkout allowed (up to noon), kiosk, disabled facilities. Quiet, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere. Clean free electric bbq in congenial UC area, lit with seats. Basic playground in poor condition. No pool.
Likes: Its seclusion and tranquillity, removed from the city yet close enough to major shopping areas. Having Lake Macquarie bounding the park.
Dislikes: There are really only two or three sites capable of taking a caravan any longer than 19ft.
Added Touches: $2 chauffeur driven limo to Wangi Workers Club. Just phone them and they send it. Same for return journey.
Local Information: Lake Macquarie the biggest salt water lake in the Southern Hemisphere. Fish don't like biting though!

Christmas Cove Caravan Park, Laurieton
Turn of the Pacific Highway at Kew (set of traffic lights) right turn if going north, left if going south, onto Ocean Drive follow for approximately 4 kms - Christmas Cove is on the left in a beautiful treed setting adjoining Queens Lake. 5 mins from Laurieton. Ph: 02 6559 9086. All pets allowed.
Average staff friendliness. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($45 A3 2C per night powered). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to most sites, cleanliness was average, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, some level sites, poor night lighting, average sized sites, adequate taps close by. Basic laundry, basic rec room. Quiet, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, too many permanents. Dirty gas bbq (free). Basic playground in poor condition. Clean pool is open to sun, pool area not considered kid-safe, toddlers catered for. Suitable for few days.
Likes: I found the park to be quite peaceful as it was off the main road and you could only occasionally hear the traffic from the highway. I did like the park in general and would stay again but only for a few days but not with the kids. I think this park is more suited to travellers who like to fish and sit down and enjoy the peace and quiet and not have to worry about entertaining kids.
Dislikes: It has a pool but I don't consider it kid safe as the area surrounding the pool is very slippery and some of the tiles on the border of the pool are broken. There are a lot of permanents in the park; some of their kids kept coming around the van and looking around it so I was concerned about the security of my van and the chairs outside. The kid's rec room was non existent as it was being used as a storage shed. The main rec room had quite a bad musty smell and I would not let my kids in there for health reasons. The amenities block was very old and could do with a major overhaul although they were reasonably clean. The laundry was also a bit of a hike for the powered sites. I found that the web site for this park was a bit misleading and showed the park to be better than it was and this was also the thought of the other people in the park at the time. The kids club mentioned on the web site never happened.
Parking: There is a sign at the entrance that states stop here for powered sites. If you go past this and park in front of the office you will then have to back your whole rig about 20 meters.
Roads: The road in from the highway was quite good no problems should be encountered.

Great to sit by the fire at night relaxing with friends. Very good management, friendly management, management responsive to comments, management was helpful. Very good value for money. Clean UC gas bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. Excellent playground in good condition. Suitable for few days, suitable for families, well maintained park.
Likes: We had a waterfront site hence the higher charge and it was delightful. The BBQ area was clean and maintained extremely well.
Dislikes: One thing I would suggest is that they put shower curtains in the showers as my towel and shoes got very wet due to the water pressure aiming straight at the door of the cubicle. The amenities block is quite a way from the site that we had and although there were toilets close it was cold in July to hike to the showers.
Parking: There is not really any waiting spot and you have to pull up on the opposite side of the road to the boom gate operation and then manoeuvre over to put your number in. A bit awkward.
Added Touches: Boat ramp was handy and a great little jetty which was right in front of our spot.
Local Information: Close to The Entrance and many central coast towns, near to Doylson which has a very nice club for eating. Mannering Point is a very small quiet village but has all the basics.
Roads: Good roads all the way.

Small neat park in rural setting with beautifully lawned powered and unpowered sites, cabins and camping area. Friendly reception, told to pick any site we liked. Reasonably well shaded, wide sealed roads with kerb and guttering giving easy access. Good water to sites. Amenities modern, clean and bright with plentiful hot water. Soap and paper towels supplied. Showers had mats but no curtains or floor mop. Small picnic shelter but no barbecues or playground. Good mobile phone and television reception (except SBS). Some traffic noise noted during day but quiet at night despite nearness of highway. Reasonably well lit at night. $16.50 2A for powered site considered excellent value.
Likes: Lawned sites, peaceful environment and reasonable price without having to pay for unwanted frills, which is all that grey nomads need.

Redhead Beach Holiday Park, Redhead, Newcastle
Heading north on Pacific Highway turn right at Wommara Avenue and then right again into Kalaroo Road. Ph: 02 4944 8944. No dogs.
Manager's name is Margaret & John. The signage to the park is easy to miss - we drove past and had to u-turn up the road. There is no check-in bay outside of boom gate so we blocked the drive-way whilst checking in at the office. The park is full of permanents with only 9 or 10 tourist sites which doesn't lend itself to a holiday atmosphere. There was only one drive through site, which we were given. All the other sites are small and there is no camping allowed in the park. They advertise as being 'located on Nine Mile Beach' but it is a 15 minute walk along path and over sand dunes to the beach. All sites are ensuite, although we weren't informed of this when booking on the telephone. We did inspect 2 styles of self contained cabins whilst there and found them to the old, worn and musty (they advertise as having 'first class accommodation'). We were quoted at $35.00 per night for a powered site and gave our credit card details as a deposit for the booking. However, without telling us the owner/manager decided to charge us $10.00 per night for our 21 month old infant. We were told by the office girl that the owner 'could do whatever she liked' and we would need to write a letter to the owner to complain. In 6 weeks of travelling, staying at caravan parks every night, we have never had to pay for our infant. The people on the site next to us were not being charged for their 2 year old! The playground is very old and basic (2 slides and monkey bars) and only suitable for older children. For some reason there is only a fence around 3/4 of it? No bikes or scooters are to be ridden in the park. The light outside the ensuite was not working which made it a hazard at night time. Overall our experience in this park was very unpleasant and we were really happy to leave. Friendly staff, bad staff response to complaints. Price was much higher than expected, poor value for money ($55 A3 1C per night, ensuite, off-peak season). Amenity cleanliness was average, condition is good, water pressure is bad, there was adequate hot water. Inadequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, small sites, concrete annex slabs to most sites, shade to some sites, drive-through sites, hard to negotiate into site, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Basic laundry, no rec room, dump point. Noisy, claustrophobic park, not enough shade, too many permanents. Dirty UC gas bbq (free), dismal bbq area atmosphere, seating provided at bbq. Basic playground. Clean pool is open to the sun, tables and chairs provided. Suitable for overnighter.
Dislikes: The attitude of the office staff and dishonesty of the management.

Nimbin Caravan Park, Nimbin
Turn east in the town follow the usual "blue caravan shape" signs. Ph: 02 6689 1402.
UPDATED REPORT NEEDED

There is no point pretending that this is anything more than a basic caravan park. Its features are limited to powered and unpowered sites, and an amenities block containing showers, toilets and a laundry. Most of the laundry's washing machines have seen better days. One did not work at all, and another had a lid which had become detached from the machine. There is no kiosk, but in the laundry is a vending machine which dispenses chips and chocolates. A portable BBQ was available, and was satisfactorily used by me on one night of our stay. But the environment in which the park is situated compensates for any deficiencies in amenities. It is surrounded by bush, with hills in the close background. There is much bird life in and around the park. The park is perhaps 200 metres from the town, and an easy walk away. It is on flat ground, and there are some concrete pads. There might be six or so vans occupied by permanents, but otherwise the park is occupied by bona fide tourists. There is a small undesirable element in the town of Nimbin, but they do not infiltrate the camping ground. There is no traffic noise and the park is very quiet. The town's swimming pool is immediately adjacent, and swimmers share toilets and showers with the campers. This might put these facilities under pressure on a hot day when the pool is in use. Incidentally, the method of cleaning the amenities block is to hose it out, without dry mopping the floor. This is not satisfactory, as the floor remains wet for many hours after the cleaning. In addition, the poor and fragile quality of the toilet paper leads to much tearing and frustration and the littering of torn paper in the toilet cubicles. There is a resident manager, who was pleasant and helpful. We were charged $57.00 for a powered site for 3 nights. This is a lovely place to stay a night or two.

Would be extremely busy in peak times. No permanents, but many holiday vans. The majority of these are in good condition and well looked after. We stayed 3 nights in a very well grassed drive through site. There were 4 or 5 of these and all were good. From observation all other powered sites were well grassed, level and close to a completely refurbished amenities block. Ensuite powered sites were also available. A few other sites that were well worn, had been temporarily closed off to be re-established. Has an excellent pool facility, brand new. Very friendly staff, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was lower than expected, very good value for money ($28 2A per night, powered, shoulder season). Not on the river. Caravan sites very small and difficult to park the van on. Palm trees each side of the site limit manoeuvring the caravan. The main complaint was the condition of the toilet/shower block. Only one for the park. Very dark inside. Mould all over the walls and ceiling. Anything made of metal was rusted such as hinges and light fittings. Unfriendly staff. Price was as expected, poor value for money ($22.00 2A per night powered). Manager's name is Tony Berry. Oldish park but generally well maintained. Except for the ensuite we were given. It was pokey, about the size of a toilet cubical, tiles falling off, etc. The inside door handle fell off late on the first day of our stay. Complaints resolution was abysmal, no after hours service, had to fix it myself. The loose handle should have been picked up by the cleaners. On my rating I would not return to this park. Average staff friendliness, bad staff response to complaints Price was as expected, poor value for money ($30 2A per night). An extremely large but pleasant park situated right on the breakwater with well-maintained grounds. There are numerous amenity blocks, ours was old and tired but clean. There is a public footpath the length of the breakwater which is very well used from early morning to late evening. Other services provided were bike hire, kayak hire, excellent recreation room, wireless internet and internet kiosk. Very friendly staff, no complaints, staff explained park layout and facilities. This park is widely regarded as the best caravan park in the Nelson Bay area. It has a surf beach so not that suited to young families, but the pool more than makes up for it. They used to offer free wireless internet (and is still advertised in some places as that) but now they charge an exorbitant $6.50 per 30 minutes. Go to the Salamander Bay library and get it for free! Everything is kept very clean and the ground staff are the most efficient I've ever seen. Good management, friendly management. Reasonable value for money. Very good amenities, adequate number to cater for tourists, close to sites, were clean, water pressure was okay, there was adequate hot water. Very good sites. Laundry, rec room, good camp kitchen, kiosk, car wash, dump point. Very good park atmosphere, quiet, shady park, family-friendly park. Clean electric UC bbq, lit at night, with seating provided. Good playground in good condition. Very good clean & heated pool, pool area is shaded, kid-safe pool area, seating around the pool was provided, toddlers were catered for. Suitable for a week or more, the park was well maintained, the park can be considered kid-safe.
Likes: Pool, beach, grassy sites. Koala's in the surrounding trees (and even in some park trees!)

The park is quite presentable from the front but once you get to the caravan sites you will think you are in another place altogether. The roads are very narrow and the sites are small. There were not many vans in the ensuite area where we stayed but had it been full there would not have been any place to park a car. There was no lawn - just weeds and dirt and no path leading from the van to the ensuite. Consequently mud was tracked into the van and ensuite. The ensuite itself was good size and very well presented. There is a fee for showers in the amenities block. TV cable was supplied and there were 4 'Foxtel' channels as well as free to air.

Manager's name is Dennis. This caravan park is so much nicer now than when we stayed in 2001. It has grass just put down and has the look of a well looked after park. They were in the park working all the time we were there except night time. Very friendly staff, staff helped us at the site, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was higher than expected, reasonable value for money ($25 2A per night). This park is very well situated to be used by people wishing to extend their stay in the Newcastle area. We encountered people who had loved ones having extended stays in the John Hunter Hospital, contract workers spending a few weeks employed in the area, people who had to have warranty work done on their van at the local dealers & other people just visiting relatives in & around the district. Most vans overnighting are usually allocated a site at the front of the park but those extending are often sent to the back of the park away from the highway. The sites at the back are larger & suited to large motorhomes. There are some permanents in that area & we found them to be very decent people by & large. Site fees are $22 per night but are $98 per week (plus power) long term.
Date 02/2006. Park Rating 3.5: Will be staying there again when visiting relatives in the Newcastle area.

A perfectly situated park opposite a beautiful sandy kid-safe beach, 500 m to shops, restaurants, cafes and a couple of pubs in the amazingly pretty resort of Shoal bay. Reception area is good with room to park while booking in. Staff very friendly and when allocated a site we were advised to have a look at it and if we didn't like it come back before setting up. Maybe we should have done this as we picked a site on the road side, which was a bit noisy with traffic. Avoid these if possible. Park has everything you could ask for - large, clean and modern amenities block, well equipped games room, with all facilities in good working condition. Numerous spotlessly clean free BBQ's, half size tennis court, good tourist info, excellent camp kitchen. Only fault is TV reception is virtually non-existent, but all cabins have cable TV provided. Sites (90% tourist) all have double concrete slabs and individual sullage. Entertainment also provided free of charge. Separate chemical toilet disposal point. Value was amongst the best we have seen ($26 2A - peak). Highly recommended - would stay again in this perfect site in a beautiful area. Very friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice, van parking assistance provided by staff.

Small, family friendly, quiet and very pleasant park. Office staff were very friendly and helpful. Powered sites were a bit tight - each one is bordered by palm trees. Hard gravel for van, concrete pad for annexe and grass for car. Good value for money as they had a stay for 3, pay for 2 night deal. $33.00 per night. Amenities were older style but nicely revamped and cleanliness was ok. Ensuite sites had very modern and lovely facilities. Great facilities for families. Good playground, games room with about 10 X-Boxes, fantastic new soft climbing equipment for toddlers, 2 round enclosed trampolines and lovely swimming pool with slide (although too cold for a swim). BBQ was very clean and congenial atmosphere. We also booked a holiday unit for $90.00 per night which was excellent value - fully self contained and nicely decorated. Bowling club next door for meals (we didn't use this though). Just across the road from a quiet, safe beach. Lovely park - we would definitely stay again.

Take the "Lakes Way" from Bulahdelah for 22km; includes 2km of graded dirt road, but quite suitable for cars and vans. Ph: 02 4997 6164 or 1800 112 234. Friendly staff, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was higher than expected, reasonable value for money ($28 2A per night, powered, off-peak season). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to all sites, cleanliness was average, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, no sites with concrete annex slabs, no sites are shaded, drive-through sites. Basic laundry, no rec room. Peaceful, open & roomy park, not enough shade, family/friendly atmosphere Clean UC electric bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. No playground, no pool. Suitable for a week or more, well maintained park.
Likes: Good position close to beach (across road) sunny sheltered position. Free BBQs.

This is nothing more than a transit park, good for only one night, if you choose to stay there at all. It has been overtaken by permanent dwellers, who occupy about 95% of the park. The powered ensuite sites are not available to bona fide tourists, and also have been taken over by permanents, who have constructed their own tents and other dwellings around the ensuites. The "resident owners" were certainly not resident during our one night stay in August, and one of the permanent dwellers was in charge of the office. The advertised "internet kiosk" is nothing more than a computer in the corner of the office, but it was also not available during our stay. This park is handy to travellers on the New England Highway, which forms one of the boundaries of the park, but this leads to constant heavy traffic noise from such a busy arterial highway. We were charged $18.00 for a powered site, on a large, pleasant, grassed area, and used the BBQ in a rotunda. This was clean and incurred no charge for its use, and worked very efficiently. There were wooden trestles in the nearby rotunda. There were ample refuse bins and the park was making a good attempt at recycling. For children, there was a small unattractive playground with the usual slide, swings, etc. The men's ablution block was very small, with a urinal, 2 toilets and 2 showers. But the showers had plentiful wall hooks and a receptacle for soap, shampoo, etc. The water was plentiful and hot.

Pet friendly with an off-lead area. We only stayed one unplanned night but the management was very helpful with assisting us with our car emergency. Well maintained quiet park with nice shaded grassed sites towards the back of the park. Facilities could be stretched during the peak season. Would stay longer if time permitted. Very good value for money.

Manager's name is F & C Edwards. We asked for a drive thru site and were put down the back of the park, as were the 5 other vans that came in the 2 days we were there, even though there are drive thru sites nearer the entrance and the larger brick amenity block. We were shown the two amenity blocks we could use, both only had one shower and three toilets. The park has many permanents and cabins. We paid $25 per night with discount - highly overpriced. Would choose to stay at park closer to town next time. Average management. Very poor amenities. Average sites, drive-through sites were available, adequate taps close by. Park atmosphere was okay, quiet, open and roomy park, shady park, too many permanents for this park. Average pool.

We stayed here for 10 days during the Tamworth Country Music Festival so the park and town was bursting at the seams with people, tents, caravans, cars, buses, etc. We found other parks would not accept bookings and to get in here we booked 12 months in advance and had to book for a fortnight. The park is on the eastern edge of town but a quick drive into the main action. The welcome was friendly if not frenetic. On arrival we were surprised by the lack of facilities for such a large number of people. There was a large toilet/shower block at the top of the park but down the back only one shower and two toilets servicing hundreds of people. We thought we would struggle for a shower etc but to our surprise did not have any difficulty. We did however decide to use the larger facility which required a walk but it seemed cleaner and not particularly busy. There are no soap dispensers in the toilet area and only one hand basin servicing seven toilets. The showers were good and plenty of hand basins in the shower area although the space was tight. Sealed roads throughout most of the facility with sites being flat and easy to negotiate. On the day after the end of the Festival the park emptied out except for about a handful of vans - a staggering transition. You can understand why the park does not upgrade its facilities for 10 days of the year but during that period it is very hectic and stretched. The fee of $34 per night for two reflected the pressure and availability of powered sites during the Festival - but I would not pay that outside of that time. It is hot during the summer and the park was very dry experiencing severe water restrictions. The Festival was a lot of fun - people everywhere, many, many things to see and do, lots of free shows and lots of paying shows. A real experience!

Small park, well shaded, ideally situated at water's edge with own jetty. Boat launching ramp at nearby village. Friendly welcome, escorted to site. Sites level and generally gravel, with slabs, power and water on all sites, some drive-through. Roads gravel, guttered, reasonable amount of grass. Amenities tired but clean, with good hot water. $23.00 per night powered site. We decided to stay for 2 days, to check out previous reports, but ended up staying for 4 days. And we found it a gem. Janette showed us to our site and helped us park. This is a small basic park with plenty of shade, slabs and grassed sites, located on the Manning River. We were parked right near the river so Leszek had four days of fishing, but tossed all fish back as they were too small. The dolphins swimming up and downstream probably frightened the fish. But it is a restful park because it has no playground, no swimming pool, no shops, no kiosk and no playground. Total peace and quiet. Nearest shopping is Taree. The amenities (2 toilets and 2 showers) are old but well maintained and clean. The laundry had one washing machine and one dryer, but this was adequate for our stay as there were not many people in the park, and anyway, with nothing else to do but rest you could wash at any time of the day. We had the best sleep we had had for months. We would definitely return to this park. If you want total quiet and rest, with clean facilities, this is the park for you.

Mostly permanent sites and might be hard to get booked in peak season but there were places available in September. Bad points: I found for a Top Tourist park, it just wasn't up to standard. It was very busy at the time we were there, just after school holidays. Below standard for the amenities, some sites were very tight. The caravans on the waterfront sites also took up the footpath for walking along the waterfront. Needs storage for boat trailers etc as very tight with boats and cars especially on waterfront sites. . Good points: Close to town, Pelican feeding each day. Good place for fishing, boating and just visiting the area. Average staff friendliness, van parking assistance provided by staff. Price was higher than expected, poor value for money ($231.00 2A per week, powered, shoulder season). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, cleanliness was average, condition is poor, there was adequate hot water, paper towels/dryer provided. Likes: Support moving / removing the van from the site with a tractor. Note, sites are very tight and generally require this service when the park is full.
Dislikes: The park / playground external (south-east) to the caravan park was very noisy of an evening and night. Some nights until 4 ~ 5am keeping us awake. A specific ethnic group where camping for nights on end in the parking area / playground (some while fishing others with noisy cars & music). We asked the park managers twice could they please do something but they said the police / council ranger and themselves could not do anything as these people would claim they where resting while on a road trip! Problem is many of these people where using the caravan park toilets and facilities while they where camping in the playground area. Some made us feel slightly unsafe and concerned for our security, van and car. Talking to others whom have stayed for years in the caravan park we understand this is an ongoing problem and is getting worse. Having been to this location, stayed and looked around the area we would not return.
Parking: Tight parking on some sites - not much room when full of tourists.
Added Touches: Fishing from the caravan park grounds.
Local Information: Restaurants, Licensed Clubs, Hotel, Pelican feeding daily, Fishing, not much else.

The park is mostly permanent set up holiday vans and expensive on-site cabins. The tourist area is in the center of the park. All sites are grass, no slabs, no ensuite. The sites closest to the amenities are heavily used and the grass is very patchy. No help was given parking, but that was not a problem as the sites are large and as they are grass positioning is not critical. This is your average council caravan park close to the beach, with a beachy holiday feel. You could stay longer than a couple of days if you are looking for that casual holiday feel.

This park appears to be council operated. It is dog friendly and very clean. It is wonderfully landscaped and a great park for kids as it is right on the lake. Being away from the main road and at the end of a dead end street, it is rather quiet at night. It is apparently busy in holidays as the number of permanent cabins and vans would testify. Very friendly staff, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, good value for money ($17.00 2A unpowered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, were clean, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, dry change area. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, average sized sites. Peaceful, open & roomy park, family/friendly atmosphere. No pool. A well maintained park.
Likes: The outlook across the lake is amazing and quite unexpected. For a council run park, top marks to the council and the managers of this gem.
Dislikes: Oddly, could not locate rubbish bins and had to walk to the dumpster each time we wanted to dispose of trash, but that is the only issues in an otherwise wonderful night at this park.

Wallamba River Holiday Park, Tuncurry
99 Aquatic Road, Tuncurry North. The turn off to the park is 8km north of Tuncurry/Forster on the right hand side coming from Tuncurry. Ph: 02 6554 3123 or 1800 268 176. Top Tourist member. Dogs on leash.
There are 4 amenities blocks in the park. I believe two are newer and two are older. The amenities closest to us were quite new and in excellent condition and kept very clean. We were here in the quiet time but the cleaners mentioned that at peak times it is impossible to keep them clean and tidy. Showers cost 20c for hot water, supposed to be around 5 minutes but this seems to vary and not work correctly. The showers are of a very generous size and there is a shower curtain to keep the change area dry. In the off season this is a lovely quiet park, especially during the week, on the weekend the river is used for skiing. But it would be a very noisy park in peak times. Most of the park is made up of permanent weekenders. It is a huge park as it was once two separate caravan parks. My impression is that there are more units and villas then there are powered camp sites. The park has an Internet Cafe and a coffee shop. Friendly staff, good staff response to complaints. Price was as expected, good value for money ($25 2A per night powered, off-peak period). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to only some sites, were clean, condition is very good, water pressure is good, extra charge for shower, soap provided, dry change area, paper towels/dryer provided, exhaust fans/good ventilation, disabled facilities. Inadequate number of tourist sites, good night lighting, average sized sites, concrete annex slabs to some sites, shade to some sites, adequate taps close by. Good laundry, kiosk, dump point. Clean UC gas bbq ($1.00), bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. Good playground in good condition. Clean pool. Suitable for few days, well maintained park.
Likes: The park is right on the Wallamba River. Some sites have views of the water but not all do.
Dislikes: Would be much too busy in peak times as this is a very popular water ski reach of the river. There are too many permanent holiday vans/cabins and not enough tourist sites.
Parking: Park on road or outside office to book in.

Country Road Caravan Park, Uralla
On New England Highway 800 metres south of town, opposite military museum. Family Parks member. Ph: 02 6778 4563. Pets allowed.
Resident owners Tony & Anne Hazlewood. Very friendly reception, layout explained, local information available. Small park, well maintained although a little unkempt. All access roads sealed. Most tourist sites pull-through, well grassed, no slabs, some well shaded, power and good water to all. Sites far enough from highway that noise is no problem. Amenities small and rather elderly but very clean; should be adequate for number of sites. Hand dryers provided, plenty of hot water. Shower cubicles on small side but have curtains and floor mat, but no mop. Dump point for toilets. Park poorly lit at night. Camp kitchen, good laundry, portable barbecue available. Public phone outside. No pool or playground. Excellent TV reception on five channels. Park not well lit at night. Basic kiosk in office, roadhouse 200 metres away for takeaways. Good base for local touring or an overnight stop. $20 2A before FPA discount good value.

Manager's name is Jim & Julie. This is a very well run small park. We stayed for 2 and a half weeks, could have easily stayed longer if we had time. Jim & Julie made us most welcome and keep the place very clean and tidy. The showers are very good. There is no pool or playground for children, but there is a very good park adjoining. The park is close to clubs and shops, no need to use the car. There are some very good scenic drives, and plenty of other interesting places. Town and surrounds are full of history. We can recommend this park for good value for money and for an extended stay.

Walcha Caravan Park, Walcha
Located in Middle Street & is easily found by following the blue caravan signs regardless of which direction you are travelling from. Ph: 02 6777 1023. Dogs on leash.
Management very friendly & helpful. $22 per night 2A powered. There is a card operated boom gate & one of the neatest & cleanest amenity blocks I've seen anywhere. Electric hand dryers, liquid soap dispensers, piped music or local radio station. Change area can be kept dry because glass sliding doors separate the showers from the change areas. There is an excellent camp kitchen which doubles as a great spot for "Happy Hour". Double hotplate, TV, electric bbq, wood fired stove acts like a "Pot Belly" (wood supplied), microwave, refrigerator, insect zapper, table & chairs, electric kettle & toaster. There are 8 drive thru sites, some separated by shrubs & about another 50 powered & unpowered sites in a small but beautifully maintained park. The office & reception also houses a well stocked kiosk. There a several cabins which appeared to be occupied by itinerant workers. Some vanners were there to participate in a tennis tournament & were there for several days. It is quite easy to walk into the town which we found to be a friendly place with the sculptures located at various places definitely worth seeing. The Autumn colours all round the town were quite beautiful. The roads in the park are bitumen & there was very good night lighting.
