Long drop toilets, non-potable water, tables, suitable for big rigs. A large tarred area and you can back your rig onto the dry grassed area. Lots of space but by 3.00pm it started filling up. Thirty eight caravans/vans by nightfall when we were there. Recommended for overnight.

Barkly Homestead Caravan Park, Barkly
Junction of Barkly and Tablelands Highways. Situated on the Barkly highway 260 km from Camooweal Qld (Mount Isa 440 km) and 190 km east of Threeways, Stuart Highway NT. Pets on application. Ph: 08 8964 4549. Dogs on leash.
We tossed up whether to 'risk' a night here after reading other reports, or possibly go on to a roadside stop, but it was 3pm and the next stop was 1.5 hrs away so could be full. The park was not as bad as I expected, though certainly has some faults. We were far enough off the highway not to be bothered by traffic, but the generator kicked up a steady din. I cannot comment on all of the amenities, but ablutions block B was not too bad. There were about 3 unisex toilets on one side and around 6 unisex combination toilet/shower units on the other side. Unisex means first-in-first-served, and my wife was a little concerned about privacy after opening the door (key required) to find a gent just about to leave - it seems the vacant/engaged sign and lock did not work, so I suggest you check. The toilet/shower combo units appear to be the best units as they are roomy (about 2.2 metres square) with a toilet, hand basin and fibreglass shower cubicle with curtain so the floor remains fairly dry. They do not have adequate ventilation (flyscreen 'window' about 300mm x 80mm, and no air entry to the room) so become very steamy after a shower - and this was July. My wife had her shower first and reported some pressure and temperature variation, but my shower saw slow variations in pressure and temperature from good of both to almost no flow at all. Cost was $24 for 2 adults, powered site, off-peak season, + $10 refundable deposit for the one amenities key. A 'voucher' was also provided to receive a roast beef dinner for $12 per person - good meal. TV is from Mt Isa, so forget it if you don't have a really good system. Diesel was $1.76/L compared to Tennant Creek $1.38/L, and I expect Camooweal to be cheaper, so maybe a dash of fuel here rather than a top-up. Definitely an overnight stop only, unless you have broken down or have other reasons to stay, but I did not think it was as bad as some reports painted.

Friendly staff. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($24 2A per night powered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, all level sites, good night lighting, large sites, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by. Poor laundry, late checkout allowed (up to noon), good camp kitchen, kiosk. Quiet, open and roomy, plenty of shade. No bbq, no playground, no pool. Suitable for overnighter.
Likes: Ensuite style amenity units.
Dislikes: Not all power sites were working. No power to rear sites. Key to amenities difficult to use. Some doors wouldn't open at all. Many taps leaking, needed washers.
Local Information: TV reception - None. Mobile phone reception - None. Auto gas available locally.

No cooking facilities in the cabins which are really just motel rooms. Friendly staff, good staff response to complaints. Price was higher than expected, reasonable value for money ($125 2A C1 per night cabin). Cabins were clean, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Mostly level sites. No rec room. Quiet, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere. UC bbq, seating provided. No playground. Clean pool is open to sun, kid-safe pool area. Suitable for few days, suitable for families, well maintained park, park is considered kid-safe.
Likes: Management have really made an effort to create a nice atmosphere and good facilities when they really don't need to as they have a captive market.
Dislikes: Everything is expensive but this is not unexpected given the remoteness.
Roads: Full width roads all the way from Three Ways to Mount Isa.

Young and friendly staff, polite and helpful. Park is typical of some roadhouse parks in that sites and amenities are basic, but adequate for an overnight stop. Most sites pull-through, worn grass or dirt, reasonable shade. Power but no water. Amenities tired and requiring a lot of attention, but adequate for a hot shower. Park was full by nightfall and amenitied would be stretched. Very limited laundry. Basic meals available at roadhouse, discounted price to those staying in the park. Being the only roadhouse on this highway, it has a monopoly which is reflected in its prices, partixularly for fuel ($2.05 for unleaded, $1,23 for autogas, probably around $2.50 for diesel). $24 for two people not particularly good value for what the park offers, but as the only alternative is staying in a rest area you have no real choice.

Average staff friendliness. Price was higher than expected, reasonable value for money ($24.00 2A per night powered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, cleanliness was average, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, large sites, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Suitable for overnighter, well maintained park.
Likes: Drive through sites and some grassed sites suitable for big rigs.
Dislikes: Food available from roadhouse but expensive due to distances. Fuel also very expensive at this stop. Some people disliked the noise of the large diesel generator that ran 24 hours per day, did not worry us.

Heartbreak Hotel Caravan Park, Cape Crawford
On the corner of Carpentaria and Tableland Highways. 4 hours north of the Barkly Homestead, alternative route to Darwin. Ph: 08 8975 9928. Dogs on leash.
Grassy sites, choose as you come, drive-through. Lots of shade, but no lighting. Pool was disgusting, couldn't see bottom. Most ladies toilets were either "out of order" or "closed for renovation", hence there was only one building with a shower and toilet inside, but shower had no door on it. Very inadequate to have just one shower/toilet for ladies, which was also used by customers buying fuel/liquor/meals. When we arrived the ladies was being cleaned, mens next door had just been serviced. I was advised to go to mens, but there was no loo paper and the facilities were very poor, for having just been "cleaned". Staff made me feel it was a bother to cater to my needs. I was handed some loo paper, but could not open dispenser to leave in there, so gave to cleaner and explained where it needed to go, but she didn't speak English, hence when my husband went, once again there was no loo paper! Only two meals offered in "restaurant" - steak (type unknown) or calamari - both $20ish. The cook couldn't make a hamburger as he had no mince or tomatoes - but he stated he could open up a can of tomatoes if we wanted?! This park has a lovely setting, with green grass and looks like an oasis, but it badly needs maintenance, improved facilities and some good old fashioned customer service. Average staff friendliness, bad staff response to complaints. Price was as expected, poor value for money ($26.00 2A per night, powered, off-peak season). Inadequate number of amenities, are close to only some sites, were dirty, condition is poor, water pressure is bad, there was inadequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, large sites, no sites with concrete annex slabs, shade to some sites, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by. Poor laundry, no rec room. Open & roomy park, plenty of shade, a few permanents. No bbqs, no playground. Dirty pool is open to sun, kid-safe pool area. Suitable for overnighter.
Roads: Both "highways" are sealed, but very narrow. You need to move off the road and stop when you see a road train approaching.

We were all strangers staying together in the middle of nowhere where the weather was perfect, the grass sites so green and water is plentiful. Everyone chatted over wines, whilst cooking their dinners, discussing where they have been and where they were heading. I could have stayed forever. Watching new friends take off in the helicopter to sight the area from above, was exciting and made a night stay different and enjoyable. Good to have an outback pub to visit for a quick drink and purchasing an emergency bottle of wine didn't turn out too expensive after all. Very friendly staff, average staff response to complaints, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, good value for money ($25 A1 C3 per night powered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to all sites, cleanliness was average, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, large sites, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by. Poor laundry, no rec room, late checkout allowed (past noon). Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere. Suitable for few days, suitable for families, park is considered kid-safe.
Dislikes: The staff seemed to be backpackers from Europe who were travelling through with absolutely no knowledge of Australia and I don't even think they knew where they were exactly. They hadn't knowledge of wines, beers, food, the towns up the road, clothes sizing, what a bbq was and they pretended they did...very annoying...especially when they all tended to gather together as they drank in the pub or hung around the park smoking their cigarettes watching you as you went about your usual business. One felt a little intimidated by their attitudes.
Added Touches: Helicopter rides.

Very nice green oasis in the middle of dry country; can wash car / van no worries. Camp area good, power ok, water ok. Most sites well shaded, pick your own so first in best dressed. Meals if required are very good, decent price. Pool fine. Maybe would stay again. Good management, friendly management, management responsive to comments. Good value for money, $20 2A per night, discount. Poor amenities, water pressure was okay, there was adequate hot water. The ablution blocks are a fair walk but also "very basic" would be a compliment, do the job though for a normal stay of overnight. Good sites, drive-through sites were available, adequate taps close by, van parking by management. Quiet, open and roomy park, shady park. Clean pool. Suitable for a few days.
Likes: Green sites, wash vehicles, shade.
Dislikes: Ablutions are very basic in number and condition. Be aware of large generator running 24/7, but is not really a problem.
Parking: Plenty of room anywhere.
Added Touches: Ticket given for complimentary glass of wine in the bar at night.
Local Information: Can arrange flights to attractions & tours if required. Beware fuel prices, try and avoid filling, cheaper by far even further out at Borroloola! Nice free camp along Tableland Highway, "Barkly Downs" - wood for fires normally dropped there. Shade structure and tap water. Didn't use ourselves for drinking but good for anything else, but then some locals stopped in and drank it.
Roads: Narrow lanes on Carpentaria, Tableland Highway, mostly single lane, some rough parts but generally ok.

Daly Waters Pub Caravan Park, Daly Waters

Dislikes: Very expensive to eat and drink at the pub, the pool was also green.

Stayed 1 night, $10.00 per person per night powered site. No water to site. This was our third visit to this pub in 4 years and not much has changed. "Amenities" sheds still the same but more rundown. You have to get there well before 2pm if you want a powered site (we got the last site at 1.45pm). Barra or steak meal $27.50. ($75.00 total with site). Meal and show still good value. Alan Turton was again the entertainer. Another area (no power) has been opened up over the road and that was full too. Everyone on the road tells you that Daly Waters Pub is a must. A great evening and we will be back again. But with the pub being fully booked every night, and the money they must be pulling in, it would be an idea if they could upgrade the amenities which are run down and desperately in need of repairs or replacement.

Our third visit and nothing much has changed - still a great outback experience with all the advantages and disadvantages listed in previous reviews. Beef and barra dinner very popular and had several sittings - great value for $25, with excellent entertainment thrown in. $18 for 2A for powered site still excellent value. Don't come with high expectations regarding the park itself and its facilities, come with an open mind and enjoy. Not to be missed when traveling the Stuart Highway. Date 6/2008. This is not a caravan park - it's an experience. The 'park' is really a shopping centre type parking lot under supervision of a changing couple who get free accommodation etc for a few weeks of directing traffic. One can expect nose to tail parking with a couple of metres of space on the side. Shade to most. Power only. Bring your own drinking water. Pay at the bar for 'site' and show the receipt to the 'gatekeeper' to be directed to your spot. Very busy between end of May to July. You come to experience the hotel and its evening entertainment. Amenities are basic. Food is good. The famous Barra & Steak meal is ordered when you pay for your site, and the time you get it is dependant on the numbers as they can only cook 50 meals at a time on the BBQ. Other food is available from the hotel kitchen. There were over 300 people there the night we stayed and the staff handled their tasks with cheerful efficiency. Winner of many tourist awards, this is not a spot for a more demanding caravanner or those who cannot enter into the outback pub experience with enthusiasm. Few will stay more than one night. What fun! Price was as expected, very good value for money ($18 2A per night powered).

Stayed 1 night, honour system $3.30 per person per night. Three long drop toilets, no water. Picnic short tables. Wood bbqs but you must bring in your own wood. Ranger came in the evening, cleaned the toilets and emptied rubbish bins. He warned us not to leave anything out in the night because of roaming dingoes. Also to keep our little dog in the van overnight. Excellent quiet overnight stop in pitch dark but the stars are just incredible. The Marbles are beautiful at sunset and again at dawn. Long open campground with few trees. Sites not specifically marked. Considerate people park at 90o to perimeter fences. Suitable for any sized van. Sites not all level. Probably dusty if windy. In July, starting to look like a parking lot by 4pm. 3 pit toilets, no water, no night lighting. Picnic bench tops, wood bbqs. Dingoes snooping about. Not threatening, but don't leave food or scraps out. Honour system payment. $3.30 per person. Good value. Ranger's talk certain evenings in the season. Very suitable as an overnighter to experience Devils Marbles - a sight not to be missed.

Midland Caravan Park, Elliot
On the left of Stuart Highway at the BP servo/PO/supermarket, first business on the way into town from the south. Ph: 08 8969 2037. All pets allowed. They lock the gate at 9.00pm and open it at 6am to keep the locals out.
New owners as of February 2008 have apparently been making an effort to improve things. Our allocated cabin (the standalone one with a BBQ right outside and near the amenities block) was occupied on check-in so we were stuck in the darkest corner of the park next to the missing section of security fence where a row of dongas had been converted to cabins by connecting every two dongas together by removing the wall and installing a sink (cold water only) and fridge. No ensuite and grey water pumped right outside the cabin onto the ground. Pool had a cover over it but was available to be used if required - we didn't. Security gate closed at night was pointless as there was a huge section missing. Friendly staff. Price was as expected, poor value for money ($75 2A C1 per night cabin). Amenities are close to all sites, were clean, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, mostly level sites, poor night lighting. Basic laundry, no rec room, secure entry. Quiet, open & roomy park, plenty of shade. No playground. Suitable for overnighter.
Likes: Peacocks roaming around.
Dislikes: Young permanent spent 20 mins sweeping the leaves right outside the window of our cabin whilst leaving the rest of the park looking like a bomb had hit it.

Smallish park with most sites for tourists and a couple of ancient vans, possibly permanents, possibly for hire. Spacious, level drive-through sites separated by tall shady trees. A few disintegrating paved annex pads. Power and quite satisfactory bore water close. Amenities clean and adequate in number. Soap and paper towel provided at basins. Strong hot water. Hooks only for clothes and towels, no shower curtains. Small laundry. Wafting septic smell in the vicinity. Gates locked for vehicle traffic at 9pm. Highway traffic noise minimal. No noticeable camp kitchen or bbqs. Relaxed atmosphere and pretty place, due to trees and grassy perimeters, but generally run down. Quite good value at $21.50 (2A per night powered). Suitable for an overnighter or several days, if you had a reason to be staying in Elliott. Seems to be the only operating park in town. Unexpected feature ... about 60 peacocks roam the grounds!

Banka Banka Station, Renner Springs
Stuart Highway, 100 km north of Tennant Creek, 570 km south of Katherine, about 75 kilometres north of Three Ways, and 50 kms south of Renner Springs. Banka Banka Station is a historic cattle station property. Ph: 08 8964 4511. Dog friendly.
Stayed 1 night, $8.00 per person per night. Excellent value. Camp area on the Stuart Highway, 74km north of Three Ways or 60 km south of Renner Springs. Friendly reception which is situated in the old historical homestead. We were told where to park and there was plenty of space left between vans. This is non-working cattle station which is connected to two other large stations, part of the Kidman Group. The camp area is green with lovely grass (I had to touch it after so long on dust and dirt). There were 6 showers and 4 toilets in the ladies section (I presume the same for men) and they were very clean. Everyone said the water pressure in the showers was great. Two washing machines at $2.00 per wash (cheapest in the entire trip). There is no power to sites but there is water (you are allowed to wash the van). You are also encouraged to fill your tanks as it is soft spring water and they have plenty. The ambience of the campsite is lovely and welcoming. It is near the road but no problem. There is an evening slide show and talk about the history of the station. A great overnight stop. Some people had stayed for three days just to relax. It was full the night we stayed and we would stay here again.

Station is one of three owned by the Kidman group of companies, but operations are now based at Helen Springs station so Banka Banka is mainly for tourists. Lush and pleasant grassed sites, overflow area dirt. Water to some sites, no power. Amenities a little old fashioned but clean and with copious hot water, and large enough to cope with a full park. Kiosk with liquor licence, slide show at night about station life. Reception was cordial but management was found to be a little terse at other times. Cost is still $12 night 2A and excellent value. Resident emu seems to have disappeared but there are goats, cattle, a donkey and turkeys, and a border collie that spends the day rounding them up.
Likes: Green oasis, a contrast to dusty outback parks. Friendly atmosphere among those staying there. Suitable for overnight or short stay, much better alternative than Renner Springs Roadhouse.

Basic laundry, no rec room, good camp kitchen, kiosk. Quiet, open and roomy, plenty of shade. No playground. Suitable for a few days.
Dislikes: Male toilets were awash with water. Impossible to use and keep dry. Office told, but apart from making a note nothing done.
Added Touches: Bar attached to park, but very expensive drinks. Jimmy Hooker (Bush Tucker Man) gave a nightly show. A dreary monologue with a couple of dated jokes supposed to impress audience with his bush savvy. Expected audience to contribute to entertainment with jokes, etc. Waste of money.
Local Information: TV reception - Analog only. OK. Mobile phone reception - Good. Auto gas available locally. Alcohol restrictions in force. Unable buy 4litre cask wine - not sold before 4pm. Limited selection. $15+ All outlets were enclosed with bars and locked gates. ID needed to buy alcohol.

Resident owners Barry, Chris, Kim & Adam Gillespie. Large park all for tourists, shady trees, red soil under foot. Grass in tent area only. Sites level, some drive through and a few with annex pads. Most sites angled 45o to access roads for maximum privacy. Raised cement road edges make a difficult lump between van and annex. Water, power close. Water had a disagreeable used laundry smell when hot. Amenities plentiful in number and clean. Strong hot water. Large laundry, generous sunny clothesline space. Central potty dump. Night lighting minimal. Camp kitchen sited mostly for convenience of tenting bus groups. Pool, spa, bar. Nightly show around campfire, in season, ($3 per person) by Jimmy Hooker "Bush Tuckerman" of the Barkly. Short cycle on the flat into town for good internet facilities and supermarket. Suitable for any length of stay. Satisfactory value at $26 (2A powered).

Cost was $26 per night. We hadn't heard all that good reports about Tennant Creek but we found it interesting and felt safe at this park. Good choice of sites, many drive through. Three amenities that were basic but tidy. Good camp kitchen. Small pool but probably adequate in hot weather. We enjoyed the evening around the park campfire and the stories by Jimmy Hooker, a Tennant Creek legend, who did a bush tucker tasting (including kangaroo tail) and bush poetry for $3 a head. We would stay again.

A large park operating in harsh conditions which has trouble with maintaining staff as there were prominent notices offering free accommodation for temporary workers in various categories. Many sites had slabs and sealed roads/driveways. Great drive throughs and shady roomy sites. We were advised to beware of small ants which inundate vans within hours so we sprayed around jacks and cords and had no trouble. Grassed sites for tenters, and good unpowered sites. Management keen for us to come to happy hour, and to come to the entertainment at $7 each. Four cents off fuel available at the site was no bargain on the day. Very friendly staff, no complaints, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was higher than expected, reasonable value for money ($26 2A per night powered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to all sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, dry change area, paper towels/dryer provided. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, large sites, concrete annex slabs, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Good laundry, good camp kitchen. Peaceful, open and roomy, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere. No permanents. Clean UC gas bbq (50 cents), bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. No playground. Clean pool is open to sun, tables and chairs provided. Suitable for a week or more, well maintained park.
Likes: Well away from main highway.
Dislikes: A little untidy around sites - large heaps of leaves

Stayed 2 days, $26.00 per night powered site. Located 1 km out of town on the way to the mining museum. We had stayed here 2 years ago as we had been told by travellers that this was the best park, and we had not been disappointed. So we decided to stay again. Reception was average friendliness. I had to wait for quite a time because the male receptionist was on the telephone. Finally he put his caller on hold, quickly took my money and told me to pick our site, and he went back to his telephone conversation. As the park was totally empty we selected site 42, a drive through with plenty of shade and a long slab. But what has happened? The park looked very tired - nothing had been improved since our previous stay. Amenities average cleanliness. We were told that a new manager had taken over (we were also told that the Rose family (owners) had taken the lease back), but am not sure which is the true version. When we arrived the park was totally empty, and about 10 caravans/mobile homes/campers came in the first night. There were fewer on the second night. The cleaner, a very helpful and cheerful fellow who had been there three days, said it would take him some time to spruce the amenities up to their former sparkling condition. Half the toilets and showers were permanently closed. Leaves around the park looked as if they had not been collected for months. We never saw anyone working at the park except the cleaner in the amenities block. There was no (absolutely nil) night lighting. It was pitch black. The bush poet was still there but we gave him a miss. There were notices all around the park listing employment opportunities at the park- from cleaners, gardeners, property management, office, etc, etc - about 10-12 positions. The first night there was some noise from locals over the fence but this quietened down quickly when we heard the sound of sirens. Also noisy drunk males in cabin 77 were quickly quietened by the manager. We would stay again, mainly to see what happens to this park. But on this occasion we were very disappointed with the way the park has gone down hill.

Threeways Tourist Park Roadhouse, Threeways
24 kms north of Tennant Creek, it's on the right of the Stuart Highway near the intersection of the Barkley Highway. Ph: 08 8962 2744. Dogs on leash.
You pay your money in the roadhouse and then you are on your own. Just inside the gate there are about a dozen, clearly defined, powered sites (The first arrivals grab those!) and then there are some grassy areas with just a few power outlets and taps. Extension cords and hoses are needed if you're not first there and can't get close. Beyond these grassy areas it is dust and gravel. Moral: If you want a reasonable site, get there early. There is a nice pool with spa and the park is far enough from the highway to minimise traffic noise. Amenities are not bad, showers spacious with good flow of water, not enough toilet cubicles in the mens. For a roadhouse, a pretty good place to stay. Suitable for a night or longer.

This park was a comfortable oasis after a long trip and has done well to have grassed sites in fairly harsh conditions. As it is well back from the road we experienced very little road noise and there were no issues with truck noise from the roadhouse. Poor laundry, good camp kitchen, kiosk, dump point. Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere, no permanents. Clean gas UC bbq, congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. Clean pool is shaded, kid-safe pool area, tables and chairs provided. Suitable for overnighter, well maintained park.

Parking: Park outside the roadhouse and pay inside. Drive in and pick your own site.
Added Touches: Meals available at the roadhouse.
Local Information: Fuel was less expensive in Tennant Creek.
Roads: Very good in all directions.

Manager's name is Lew Farkas. The park is set up as a bit of an oasis in the desert, with water from a bore providing good drinking and irrigation water. The surrounds are grassed, but the van sites are gravel, mostly level. The amenities could do with some TLC, but generally clean. The park is right next to the Stuart Highway, and some traffic noise will be experienced, but during most sleeping hours the traffic drops off. The park has some attractions such as a train ride, swimming pool, and reasonable restaurant. Cost was $23.80 2A after member discount, powered site, off-peak season - reasonable for the location. Not a lot to do around the area, unless waiting for UFO's, so consider it an overnight stop. Friendly staff, staff explained park layout and facilities.
