Adelaide River Inn Caravan Park, Adelaide River

On Stuart Hwy behind Adelaide River Inn, which is behind BP Roadhouse. Bookings to BP Roadhouse. Ph: 08 8976 7047. All pets allowed.

Manager's name is Judy. Manager took us to available sites. Depending on availability some sites are drive through and a few have paved slabs, the rest have thick grass (well watered when vacant). Although the park is behind the Inn, it is very quiet with minimum highway noise. Very friendly staff, staff helped us at the site, staff explained park layout and facilities. Very good value for money ($25 2A, powered, peak season). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, paper towels/dryer provided, exhaust fans/good ventilation. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, sites will accommodate medium to large vans, annex slabs to some sites, shade to some sites. Good laundry, good camp kitchen, kiosk, dump point, you can use your mobile wireless (carrier used was Telstra, reception quality was 4). Peaceful, open & roomy park, no permanents. Clean UC gas bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. No playground. Clean pool, tables and chairs provided, suitable for families, well maintained park, park is considered kid-safe.
Likes: The park is very well maintained with a beautiful pool area. All sites are grassed and separated by trees for privacy. The pool has a large shallow end suitable for toddlers.
Dislikes: Although not a problem be aware that goods trains go through the town from time to time and they can be clearly heard.
Parking: You can pay at the BP station first (card facilities available) and take your receipt to Judy or go directly round the back by turning left into Memorial Terrace to the park where the Managers are on Site 1 and pay them in cash.
Local Information: Adelaide River Inn at the front/side of the park serves great meals from 6pm; $17.50 for Local Barra (very tasty) or the hot buffet. The War Cemetery as well as quite a few WWII localities around this town and the Heritage Rail Precinct is worth looking at. On entering town the old Stuart Highway is separated from the new one by a park where locals hold a market on Monday/Wednesday/Friday mornings.
Roads: Good

Manager's name is Doug & Cheryl. Dog friendly park, we did not have ours tied up but as long as they did not wander was ok. We were prepared to pay whatever was necessary to stay in Darwin, have an ensuite and maybe near the water, but as we have dogs this is not to be, was very disappointed. So stayed at Adelaide River instead for 3 weeks and still saved money, even after travelling in a couple of times a week. Plus the added benefit of not having to be under strict rules at all times (re dogs). Very friendly staff, good staff response to complaints, staff offered tourist advice, staff helped us at the site, staff explained park layout and facilities. Very good value for money ($110 2A per week, powered, shoulder season). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to most sites, cleanliness was average, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, sites will accommodate large motorhomes and 5th wheelers, no sites with concrete annex slabs, shade to most sites. Basic laundry, no rec room, you can use your mobile wireless (carrier used was Telstra, reception quality was 4). Peaceful, open & roomy park, no permanents. Clean pool is shaded. Suitable for a week or more.
Likes: Managers very easy going, $20 a night or $110 per week makes the 90k trip into Darwin worth while
Dislikes: Toilets could be cleaner. Getting a little run down.

Mt Bundy Station, Adelaide River

Turn off is just S of Adelaide River and then 2-3 kms off the highway. Turn off the Stuart Hwy 800m S of Adelaide River opposite the old Loco, and then drive 2.7 kms along Haynes Road and the Station is on the left. Working cattle station. Ph: 08 8976 7009. Dogs on leash.

Station stay with powered and unpowered areas. Ample shade, especially in the powered area. Ask for a powered site away from the stables. Basic amenities, one washing machine. We stayed on the lower unpowered grassed area. Camp fires allowed, wood supplied. The camping area was peaceful and roomy, the powered areas claustrophobic. $16.50 unpowered 2A peak season, staying 4 nights paying for 3. Regular rate is $11.00 per person. Regular powered rate is $13.00 per person. Good value for money if the 4 for 3 option taken. Amenities would not cope if park is full.
Local attractions: Close to historical Adelaide River. Fishing from the banks of the Adelaide River, which was not that wide when we were there. The station offers tours and trail rides.

Manager's name is Scott and Sue Witham. This place has real character. It is a working property so expect to see sheds, and vehicles coming and going. Even the amenities have that station feel about them, basic but clean. Sites are shady and probably grassy during peak season, I was there during the dry so there was a bit of dirt around. I will definitely be returning. Very friendly staff, staff helped us at the site, staff explained park layout and facilities. Very good value for money ($13 1A per night, shoulder season). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, sites will accommodate medium to large vans, no sites with concrete annex slabs, shade to most sites, drive-through sites, hard to negotiate into site, adequate taps close by. Basic laundry, you can use your mobile wireless (carrier used was Telstra, reception quality was 5). Quiet, open & roomy park, plenty of shade. Clean pool is shaded. Suitable for month or longer.
Likes: Its character, peacefulness during shoulder period.
Dislikes: Worries me that the amenities may not cope in peak period and that it could become quite cramped. I'm just surmising, hope I'm wrong.
Parking: In front of the shed.
Added Touches: Plenty of horse riding , Bird watchers paradise.
Local Information: Close to Douglas Daly, Litchfield and an hour from Darwin Adelaide River Inn is 5 Minutes away for a top feed.

Probably the worst park we have stayed at in the 17 months we have been travelling. We phoned and booked telling them we had a 30ft fifth wheeler. Rate quoted at $26 for 2 adults. On arrival they charged $30 because of the size of the rig which would not have made any difference on the site allocated. No water connection unless using a very long hose which people would drive over. Power was on the end of an extension lead originating from under a building. However, the site was very nice but very noisy from other campers. The amenities were woefully inadequate. There are roadside rest areas with better amenities. As the price charged is at the upper end of the scale, we expected better. We ended up moving to the Adelaide River Showgrounds at $20 with much better sites and facilities. Average staff friendliness, average staff response to complaints, staff helped us at the site. Price was much higher than expected, poor value for money ($30 2A per night, powered, peak season). Inadequate number of amenities, are close to only some sites, cleanliness was average, condition is poor. Inadequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, average sized sites, no sites with concrete annex slabs, shade to most sites. Poor laundry, no rec room. Noisy, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, no permanents. No playground. Clean pool is shaded, kid-safe pool area. Suitable for overnighter.
Likes: Locations.

Manager's name is Scott & Sue Withers. The caravan section caters for 19 powered sites with mostly drive through. The camping area is huge with some shade. Horse trail rides are provided with an experienced horseman as guide. The swimming pool is well maintained and clean, the toilets and showers are old but always clean. Drinks, milk and souvenirs are available at the office. One can see buffalos on the station and do a spot of fishing in the Adelaide River but be crocodile aware. Water supply is good. Other attractions while at Mt Bundy are the War Graves, Adelaide River Rail Station Museum, old WWII sites such as the Snake Creek Arms Depot and the site of the 119th Australian General Hospital, the Hospital Rail Siding, are worth a visit. Very friendly staff, good staff response to complaints, staff offered tourist advice, van parking assistance provided by staff. Price was as expected, good value for money ($26 2A per night, powered). Amenities are close to most sites, were clean, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, dry change area. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, average sized sites, no sites with concrete annex slabs, shade to most sites, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by. Poor laundry, no rec room, late checkout allowed (up to noon), good camp kitchen. Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere, no permanents. Clean gas bbq (free). No playground. Clean pool is shaded, kid-safe pool area, tables and chairs provided. Suitable for month or longer, suitable for families, well maintained park, park is considered kid-safe.

Manager's name is Scott and Sue Witham. I have been in the caravan park now for over 18 months, I have seen many tourists come and go. The reason I have stayed is the price, the manager, the history of the area, the climate, and the town of Adelaide River. Mt Bundy Station is a working cattle station and WYSIWYG, and what you get is buffalos, horse trail rides, bird life, WWII history, BBQ's, station tours, etc, and since I have been here I get a chance for some hands-on experience. Very friendly staff, good staff response to complaints, staff offered tourist advice, staff helped us at the site Very good value for money. Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is reasonable, there was adequate hot water. Roadhouse and caravan park. 500 meters from Corroboree Billabong Turnoff and 45 mins from Kakadu National Park, Arnhem Hwy, Arnhem Land. Ph. 08 8978 8920.

This is a great overnight park, and very well priced - $22 night 1, $11 night 2, $22 night 3, $11 night 4 and on. They have pet crocodiles, pigs & piglets, Brahma bulls, albino buffalo etc. Basically the powered sites are on mainly well grassed areas, water pressure is great, though amenities are a little bit tired, though clean. Great meals at the roadhouse and very friendly service. We stayed 2 x nights and we would happily stay there again.
Likes: Right on highway, great to break your journey - nice little swimming pool, interesting penned animals for children to see at no extra charge.
Dislikes: Some water taps and fittings have been damaged and lean over, but are still functional.

Report submitted by Not So Grays (62).

On checking in no explanation given as to park layout or amenities; you just choose your own site. Explained sausage sizzle held Wednesday & Friday nights. Advised a lady in the park had a Children's Python snake. When we were at the sausage sizzle the park owner had the snake around his neck while serving up. The group we were sitting with contained two ladies who were really stressed out by this; he put it under his shirt but continued to serve patrons. The sausage sizzle is held within the 'licensed area' of the kiosk so park patrons could not take their own liquor and purchasing it from the shop was very expensive. The amenities were clean but no room in the shower for clothes and no curtain. No soap or paper towels/dryer in the vanity area. Lots of mosquitoes in the toilets. Sites were large a couple were drive-through, all were easy to park in and one half of the sites were very well shaded some with gravel under the van pad area - no slabs in this park; lots of red dust and no-where to direct the grey water. Bins not emptied and placed and in the centre of four sites but not all four sites which meant you had to walk through several sites to find a bin. No signs in laundry area explaining what coins to use or how much it cost. Two rotary clothes lines were both tilting at an angle. When asked about a dump point the owner said it would be ok to empty it 'over the back fence' which was bush. BBQs in camp kitchen area (away from van sites) needed a lighter (not supplied). Friendly staff. Reasonable value for money ($25 2A per night, powered, peak season). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, cleanliness was average, water pressure is good. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, sites will accommodate large motorhomes and 5th wheelers, no sites with annex slabs, shade to some sites. Basic laundry, no rec room, basic camp kitchen, kiosk, mobile wireless not available. Quiet, open & roomy park, no permanents. Dirty UC gas bbq (free), seating provided at bbq. No playground. Clean pool. Suitable for overnighter.
Likes: Shaded site, only 6k or so from Litchfield boundary so a good base
Dislikes: The dust at the sites. Poorly maintained park. Amenities. BBQs. State of clothes lines.
Added Touches: Free sausage sizzle served after 7pm.
Local Information: Litchfield Park was magnificent; some highlights still closed after the wet (as at end June)

Batchelor Resort Caravillage, Batchelor
Click here for park details on My Park List
Batchelor is 14 kms off the Stuart Hwy, on the southern way in to Litchfield National Park. The turn-off is 28 kms N of Adelaide River and 85 kms S of Darwin. The caravan park is on Rum Jungle Road, on the outskirts of Batchelor township on the way to Litchfield National Park. Reception is in the resort (motel might be a better word), behind the petrol station. The park and the resort/motel, which were separate operations, are now combined. BIG4 member. No pets allowed. Ph: 08 8976 0123 or 1800 260 166.

I stayed at the park for 3 weeks and thoroughly enjoyed it. The super ensuite site that I used consisted of separate toilet, large shower room and a washing machine was also provided, along with lines for clothes drying. These sites are expensive for a single user but would be great for two or more vehicles travelling together. The park grounds are very well maintained with lush tropical vegetation. Sites are shady for at least some parts of every day. There is an adjoining motel and service station operated by the proprietors of the park. The service station shop has take away food and basic grocery supplies. It is also a take away bottle shop. The restaurant associated with the motel has excellent food and the Sunday night roast is good value. The Batchelor general store, from which all basic grocery requirements can be obtained is within a kilometre of the park entrance. It was easy to get around the park and the town on my mobility scooter - although there are speed humps that might cause the scooter to bottom out, they are able to be by-passed. The park is entirely suitable for mobility impaired persons. For a person seeking a quiet time in the wonderful climate of the Northern Territory in the Dry season, the park is highly recommended.

Interesting little caravan park - hard to get into and needs a lawn mower around it - hard to find the actual spots for caravans. However the pluses = We got ensuite with site for a payment in the $20 mark. We also got good and friendly service and also free mangos (as many as we wanted). It being a drop kick from Litchfield National Park was in an ideal position. Would go there anytime - especially with the friendly service and smiles all around

Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to all sites, were clean, condition is very good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, dry change area, exhaust fans/good ventilation. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, sites will accommodate medium to large vans, no sites with annex slabs, shade to some sites, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Good laundry, basic rec room, good camp kitchen, kiosk, book swap available, no wireless internet available, you can use your mobile wireless (carrier used was Telstra, reception quality was 3). Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, no permanents. Clean UC gas bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. No playground. Clean pool is shaded, tables and chairs provided. Suitable for few days, suitable for families, well maintained park, park is considered kid-safe.
Likes: The managers are friendly, laidback and what more caravan park owners should be like. The price is good value when you consider it costs $20 with no power and only solar showers in the national park, $4 extra for immaculate amenities, gas hot showers and power is great value. The camp kitchen is what they all should be like, a full stove/oven, sink, free gas BBQ and TV, laundry with iron and ironing board. With only 2 other vans at peak season we each got our own ensuites as there are 3 twin bathrooms. Would loved to have stayed a few more days but much of Litchfield still closed off after a big wet season.
Dislikes: Nothing, reinforces why you originally started caravanning.
Local Information: Buley Rockhole and Florence falls only 15 minutes away

Nice quiet smallish park about 10kms from Litchfield park. Easy access and liked that we could choose our own site. Power and water is next to shared ensuite facilities which are spacious and clean. Friendly staff. Good value for money ($24 2A, powered, peak season). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to all sites, were clean, condition is very good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, exhaust fans/good ventilation. Adequate number of tourist sites, some level sites, sites will accommodate large motorhomes and 5th wheelers, no sites with concrete annex slabs, shade to some sites, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by, you can use your mobile wireless (carrier used was Telstra, reception quality was 4). Quiet, open & roomy park, not enough shade, no permanents. Clean pool is shaded, tables and chairs provided. Suitable for few days.
Likes: Easy going manner of management. Cleanliness of amenities. Reasonable restaurant on site, good book exchange.
Dislikes: Shower curtain in ensuites would avoid the dry area getting wet, although there are plenty of bathmats supplied so not a big problem.
Local Information: In Litchfield National Park, the Lost City is well worth a look. If up for a hike, Tjaynera Falls and Greenant/Tjaetaba Falls are good options to get away from the crowds at the more accessible pools like Buley Rockpools and Florence Falls.

This park may suit some people who are unable to get into closer Darwin parks due to having pets. The park is in an isolated area about 3 kms from Berry Springs thermal pool. There are grass sections to the park which are fairly generous in size and another section closer to the amenities which are narrow drive through sites. Some grass sites are a long walk to the amenities. Average staff friendliness, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Reasonable value for money ($28.00 2A per night, powered, peak season). This is probably the worst caravan park we have come across in our travels. The Manager couldn't care less whether we stayed there or not. Unfriendly staff. Price was higher than expected, poor value for money ($27 2A per night, powered, peak season). Inadequate number of amenities, are close to only some sites, were dirty, condition is poor, water pressure is bad, there was inadequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, some unlevel sites, poor night lighting, small sites, concrete annex slabs to most sites, shade to some sites, drive-through sites, hard to negotiate into site, poor water quality. Poor laundry, no rec room. Noisy, claustrophobic park, not enough shade, a few permanents. Dirty electric bbq (free). Basic playground in poor condition. Dirty pool, pool is open to sun, pool area not considered kid-safe. Suitable for overnighter. There was absolutely nothing we liked about this park. Only stay if you are absolutely desperate!
Dislikes: There were many shower heads missing, so reduced number of available facilities. Amenities were dirty, and didn't seem to have been cleaned at all on the day we stayed (Sunday). There was a charge of $9 per person to access the park's water slide. There were no footpaths thru sites to facilities so campers walked inside personal space at all times of day and night. Long term resident advised us owner refuses to spend any money on maintenance or upkeep, and it showed.

Tumbling Waters Tourist Park, Berry Springs

About 70 km S of Darwin and 19 km off the Stuart Hwy along the Cox Peninsular Rd. Located approx 7 km past the Territory Wildlife Park on the Cox Peninsula Rd. Ph: 08 8988 6255. Small pets only, at managers discretion, on leash at all times.

Other reports rate this park very highly and deservedly so. There are three distinct areas, for the cabins, camping and caravan sites. The older part of the park has the best shaded sites, although in time the newer sites will also be well shaded. Sites are by and large level although some have large protruding tree roots that can be a problem for mobility impaired persons. However, I was able to use a mobility scooter to get around the park reasonably easily. Those intending to stay are advised to check in by 11am, which can be difficult depending on where you are travelling from. Sites are allocated on a first in basis depending on availability, so the shadiest sites and those closest to the amenities tend to be taken first. However, you are free to move to different sites if they become available during your stay. The best shopping facilities are located at Humpty Doo or Coolalinga, both around 40 kms away, so if staying for a week or more it is best to come well stocked with supplies. This popular and very pleasant venue is highly recommended for persons wishing to enjoy a quiet shady location during the wonderful Top End dry season.

Manager's name is Darren & Jenny Campbell. This park is on my 'must stay' list. Whenever we run into fellow travellers we tell them 'do yourself a favour and stay'. So friendly and welcoming. On arrival you are greeted with smiling managers working from a new open office. From there it just seems to rub off with friendliness as everyone seemed the same. There is a freshwater crocodile enclosure where the kids and anyone can feed the crocs on Saturday. An open-air theatre is fantastic - take your chairs and enjoy. Also the new Al Fresco restaurant is another plus and they had just started offering a Happy Hour with drinks at half price. On the down side, the amenities are basic and not enough but if you have your own facilities this is not an issue. The dust was a bit of a problem also but the managers have left hoses on just about every site to encourage anyone to put the sprinklers on to keep the dust down. They are working towards improving on the amenities and roads. You feel as though you need to stop and say Goodbye and Thank you for a lovely stay and they appreciated it. All in all it was a stay that started for 1-2 days and ended up staying 10 days. Have recommended it to all travellers we pass going that way. Very friendly staff, good staff response to complaints, staff offered tourist advice, staff helped us at the site, staff explained park layout and facilities. Very good value for money ($32 2A per night, shoulder season). Inadequate number of amenities, cleanliness was average, condition is reasonable. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, sites will accommodate large motorhomes and 5th wheelers, no sites with annex slabs, shade to most sites, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by. Good rec room, late checkout allowed, kiosk, you can use your mobile wireless (carrier used was Telstra, reception quality was 4). Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, no permanents. Clean pool. Suitable for month or longer, suitable for families, well maintained park, park is considered kid-safe.
Likes: Managers very friendly. Close to Territory Wildlife Park. Close to Litchfield Hotel and Supermarket. Open-air Movies Wednesday and Saturday Nights. Al Fresco dining. Entertainment Sunday Happy Hour
Dislikes: Amenities could be better, but if you have your own not an issue. Dusty roads but hoses are provided and encouraged to be used.
Added Touches: Fresh open-air movies
Local Information: Close to the Territory Wildlife Park - $20 good value. Litchfield Hotel have to go and have a look at the interior, good meals also. Has a supermarket and plant nursery also.

Very friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Very good value for money ($20 1A per night, shoulder season). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, sites will accommodate large motorhomes and 5th wheelers, no sites with concrete annex slabs, shade to some sites, adequate taps close by. Very small park about 100m off the Victoria Hway which filled up quite quickly during our stay. There is a loop around the central tent camping area and vans etc need to park around the loop if driving in a clockwise direction you can open your annex onto the area the other side of the short logs. An extra smallish offshoot parking area is on the western side of the park. Some shade around the park but not a great deal. 3 or 4 picnic tables with benches provided as well as a campfire pit. There is a short walk down to Sullivans Creek which was just running when we were there. No water provided at campsite. Very good value for money ($3.30 1A per night). Amenities are close to all sites, cleanliness was average, condition is reasonable. Some level sites, sites will accommodate medium to large vans, very few sites are shaded, drive-through sites. Mobile wireless not available. Peaceful, open & roomy park. Wood bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere. Suitable for overnighter.
Likes: Good overnight rest stop.
Dislikes: There was quite a bit of a dip in one section of the loop.

Stayed 1 night. This was our first "freebie/donation" stopover, and we did not know what to expect. It was getting late so we decided to pull over at Sullivans Creek (well signposted), which was on dirt, a little off the main highway. On entering the loop-road we found there were 9 caravans and mobile homes squashed in. Caravans that arrived after us had to travel further as there was no space left. There were more vans here than at some paid parks at which we had stayed. The stop is located near a creek, and travellers told us that a crocodile had been spotted there, so we kept our distance. There is water there (not drinkable), a long drop toilet and a wood fireplace. Late in the night campers arrived and under torchlight set up in the grassed area in the middle of the loop. It was a very dark quiet peaceful night, with very friendly travellers around us. We enjoyed our first "freebie" stop and this gave us courage to try a few more. Suitable for large rigs, but you have to get there early.

Manager's name is Craig. When we visited Gunlom the area had only been open 5 days - the road in is 37k of very badly corrugated dirt. We tow a 'Dirt Road' van and took about 90 mins at 20kph for the majority of the way; however no problems with the vans inners on arrival. This is a truly beautiful camping area, very large and shady but also areas where large rigs can park in the sun if you need solar as we do. There is a very large generator area set aside which is close to the amenity block; tour companies have a separate area set aside next to there. From our campsite we could see the top half of Gunlom Falls roaring away with lots of water still. The walk from Gunlom past Mirrill Billabong to the South Alligator River was nice although it had been burnt out. The downside of travelling this early in the season is that most of the walks in Kakadu (& several roads, campsites) are still closed. Very friendly staff. Good value for money ($10 1A per night). Amenities are close to most sites, cleanliness was average, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, dry change area. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, sites will accommodate large motorhomes and 5th wheelers, no sites with annex slabs, shade to most sites, drive-through sites, no camp kitchen, mobile wireless not available. Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, no permanents. Wood bbq. Suitable for few days.
Likes: You can swim in the pool at the bottom of the falls (Crocodile Aware sign on display) and also in the one at the top of the waterfall lookout walk
Roads: The condition of the road in is terrible. Considering what NT Govt gets in revenue and the number of tourists/buses etc visiting these falls (the only one open currently) they need to at least grade it. Bitumen to the T-junction (26k) would be fabulous; this stretch is wide enough for two vehicles, from there into the camp is National Parks responsibility and not as wide. The ranger told us it had only had a grader through to clear the way in for NP staff at that stage, no 'proper' grade one.

At $10 per person per night it is a much more reasonable place to stay than the resort at Cooinda which is currently charging $45 site for 1 or 2 people per night. The Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre is well worth an hour or so. Very friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice. Very good value for money ($10 1A per night). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to all sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, dry change area, paper towels/dryer provided, disabled facilities. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, sites will accommodate large motorhomes and 5th wheelers, no sites with annex slabs, shade to some sites, drive-through sites, no camp kitchen, you can use your mobile wireless (carrier used was Telstra, reception quality was 2). Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, no permanents. Wood bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere. No pool. Suitable for few days.
Likes: Very well run by the resident manager who collects fees in the late afternoon. Two separate areas of campsites - No 1 is open and very large with room for any size rig; No 2 is on the right going in from the Kakadu Hwy and is a prettier campground but much smaller sites. It is marked as 'tent' camping area but there were quite a few small 'whiz-bang' type motorhomes there as well. Both areas have a large and well maintained toilet & shower block with outside sinks (H & C water and plugs).
Dislikes: We were parked in the generator area near the manager's van in an area very close to the swamp and mossies were fierce
Local Information: Only about 6 or 7k from Cooinda where you can do the Yellow Waters cruise. We did the sunset cruise which was just spectacular.
Roads: Bitumen road into both campsites, about 500m from Kakadu Hwy with minimum highway noise.

A lovely parkland setting; well spread out and quiet. Hot showers, large shower cubicles, disability bathroom. Sinks on exterior of amenities block. Not recommended to drink tap water, but nice fresh drinking water provided from a tank (carted in). Generator area (9am - 9pm). Bins and recycling centre. Wood fire places and picnic tables at camp sites. Caretaker comes around to collect fees. Walk trail to billabong. Very friendly staff. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($20 2A per night, unpowered). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, disabled facilities. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, sites will accommodate large motorhomes and 5th wheelers, shade to most sites, drive-through sites. Quiet, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, no permanents. Wood bbq (free). Suitable for few days.
Likes: Pleasant location and atmosphere. This was my favourite of the Kakadu campgrounds
Local Information: Very close to Cooinda and the Yellow Waters cruises. A lovely quiet alternative to the busy 'resort style' caravan park at Cooinda.

Merl Campground, Kakadu National Park
http://www.environment.gov.au/parks/kakadu/visitor-activities/camping.html
North east of Jabiru, turn off on left just before Ubirr. No pets allowed.

Very large campground with loop tracks and cleared camping spots made to accommodate several campers. Picnic tables and seats, wood fire places. Most sites not easy for big rigs to access. Small area only reserved for generators and not suited to big rigs at all. Amenities blocks in centre of loop sections - not very close to the camps. Solar panels in shady locations so hot water not adequate. Water quality good, but taps not suitably placed for filling caravan tanks. Sinks cold water only. Trough for bathing small children. Rangers come and collect fees (and wait at entrance for those returning from watching the sunset). Friendly staff. Price was as expected ($20 2A per night, unpowered). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to only some sites, were clean, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was inadequate hot water, disabled facilities. Inadequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, sites will accommodate small to medium vans. Quiet, too much shade, no permanents.
Likes: Pleasant bushland setting
Dislikes: Mosquitoes voracious even in day time; they even attack you whilst under the shower.
Local Information: An easy walk on a trail from campgrounds to Cahill's Crossing on the East Alligator River. Cultural cruises on river. Drive to Ubirr Rock Aboriginal rock painting sites and sunset viewing from top of rock.

Muirella Campground, Kakadu National Park

Roughly half way between Cooinda and Jabiru, turn S off the highway. No pets allowed.

We went into this area intending to stay a couple of nights as a base for visiting Nourlangie art sites and to do the Bubba Walk from there however the walk had not been opened (early June) so we decided to move onto Jabiru. There are numerous campsites for any size rig, some require a bit of negotiating around trees but are fairly level. Good amenities block and the Manager lights mossies coils in the evening. Fees collected by manager. Good value for money ($10 1A per night). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is good. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, sites will accommodate medium to large vans, no sites with annex slabs, shade to most sites, drive-through sites, hard to negotiate into site. No camp kitchen. Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade. Wood bbq (free). Suitable for overnighter.

Pleasant campground, amenities very well maintained, but dusty grounds and not very large. Some shade. Non-generator area (former generator area is now set aside for commercial tour groups). Bins around campground and recycling centre. Very good drinking quality water. Close to billabongs and walks (crocodile caution). Boat ramp. Very friendly staff. Price was as expected ($20 2A per night, unpowered). Suitable for few days.
Likes: Current caretakers placed flowers in the bathroom, and lit up mosquito coils each evening. Bathrooms kept very clean and homely.
Local Information: Campground adjoins 'Kakadu Cultural Camp' and in addition to evening boat tours on the billabong, ticket includes a cultural demonstration (didgeridoo playing and spear throwing). Wetlands walks.
Roads: Bitumen road access, a few kms in from road. A good base for seeing the nearby Nourlangie and Nanguluwur Aboriginal rock painting sites.

Nice quiet park, very roomy, large grassed sites, only 15 powered caravan sites but all with ensuite. Well maintained park, however, disappointed at amount of shade. Asked 3 times to be put on a shady site, but was allocated a site with no shade at all. Went back to office after inspecting the other sites and found one with a reasonable amount of shade. However, there are not a lot of trees on the sites, and the ones that are here are only shrubs/bushes. Would have preferred paying an extra $5 and going to the park across the road with shade and a pool. Average staff friendliness, average staff response to complaints, staff offered tourist advice. Reasonable value for money ($35 2A, ensuite, peak season). Adequate number of tourist sites, some level sites, good night lighting, annex slabs to most sites, very few sites are shaded. No pool.
Likes: Quiet, roomy, grassy, all sites have ensuites.
Dislikes: Not enough shade, no pool (however, free pass to public pool in town), staff member did not listen when a shady site was requested 3 times (even though there were only 5 vans in the entire park)

A much quieter park we would expect than the others as there is only 15 powers site, no unpowered. All site have own ensuite which made the stay much more pleasant. Being peak season you need to book, many people were turned away, they expected to get a site, there was only the odd one available and usually only available for one night at a time. Very friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Reasonable value for money ($35 2A per night, ensuite, peak season). Peaceful, open & roomy park, not enough shade, no permanents. Bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere. No playground, no pool. Suitable for a week or more, suitable for families, well maintained park, park is considered kid-safe.
Likes: The ensuites would be one and the other being only 15 sites. It was within walking distance of lovely bakery/takeaway and the middle of all the attractions
Dislikes: Only that they are strict as to what time you can book in, we arrived around 11am but told to come back as 12, we could unhook the van in an area they had, but chose to just head to the shopping centre.
Parking: plenty of parking
Local Information: Kakadu says it all, an amazing place and plenty to see and do, we had a week and did not see it all. Recommended the Yellow Water Tour and Guluyumbi Tour. If you are into fishing the best one was Yellow Water Fishing Safari with Dean Jackson, that was a highlight, we saw more on that than any other tour. Ubirr at Sunset was a must and Nourlangie Rock was totally unexpected with what we saw

Small park, but with a lot of unused space. All sites are ensuite and have an annex slab. Reasonable sized ensuites, no cupboard or shelf but ample bench space to unpack toiletries onto. Ensuites are serviced daily, which is a bonus, but we had a tube of medicine disappear. Manager said cleaners denied having seen it, and that it wasn't in the waste bin used by the cleaners, but we had it when we arrived and didn't have it 2 days later. Whistling kite steals any food that is left unattended or even attended if you are not careful. Friendly staff, average staff response to complaints, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, good value for money ($30 2A per night, ensuite). Water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, large sites, concrete annex slabs to most sites, shade to some sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Good laundry, no rec room. Peaceful, open & roomy park, not enough shade, family/friendly atmosphere, no permanents. Clean UC gas bbq (free), bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. No pool. Suitable for a week or more, suitable for families, well maintained park, park is considered kid-safe.
Dislikes: Could do with a pool in this climate. They lost a lot of trees in the cyclone a couple of years ago, the replacements are still quite small so it isn't as shady as it could be.
Local Information: Jabiru is in the middle of Kakadu National Park, with all the walking and tours that implies. The Ranger Uranimum Mine tour isn't worth the $30 charged, you see the open cut mine but none of the processing. We did both Guluyambi (East Alligator River) and Yellow Water boat cruises, if you only do one we definitely recommend Guluyambi.

We only stayed 1 night so didn't see or use many of the facilities. Very friendly and helpful staff. Huge park which is very lush & green. Amenities were clean and in excellent condition with soap and hand dryers provided. Good laundry. We were allocated a drive thru site as we were only staying the 1 night but other sites seemed roomy and the majority had concrete slabs. Lovely, clean pool with separate spa. No playground seen. There is a bistro on site with nightly entertainment. Close to the Hot Springs. Would definitely stay again.

Park is mainly motel and cabins. All powered sites are ensuite. Reasonable ensuites, with bench, towel rail and 2 hooks, plus a shelf for unpacking onto, plus an outside area with laundry tub. Let down by poor drainage that means shower water goes all over floor, and no rubbish bin. BBQ had 2 burners out of 4 not working. Motel restaurant on-site, we didn't try it so don't know how good it is. Friendly staff, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($35 2A per night, ensuite). This is a working cattle station in a rural environment on the Katherine River (no views of river but you can walk down and fish in it). Very large wide & long sites; easy to back into with electricity & water at both ends of several of the sites. Half the sites are very shaded all day with thick grass, the other half the sites are part shade and a few are full sun. Numerous dogs were here during our stay and all were well behaved. Toilet block is old but loos were clean, wash basin area has been updated and is good however no soap or towels provided. The shower cubicles are small with no bench and there is one shower with a bath base. This park also has quite a number of permanents who use the amenity blocks. Outdoor kitchen is very basic; laundry has several washing machines, didn't see any tumblers but there are three rotary clothes lines. Water pressure is ok. Telstra mobile has 4 bars; Bigpond wireless internet has 2 bars inside van. No playground, no pool. Friendly park owners. We enjoyed our extended stay here; it is very reasonably priced for this area ($26 2A per night). The park is quite peaceful and it takes about 10 mins to drive into town.

We have visited Katherine many times but this was the first time at this park. We arrived late morning and were offered a choice of two sites at the front on the highway or there were some down the back. We chose to go down the back. The receptionist asked the length of our van which was parked adjacent to the office so she could see if was of average size. She then consulted the large map of the park on the wall of the office and said she'd put us on site 76 and gave us directions to the site. When we got to the site, we saw it was the size of a pocket handkerchief but went ahead and backed the van in. The off side of the van was hard up against two large trees, the annex side was 1.5m from the neighbouring van. Standing by our door, we could touch our neighbour's van. As the manager had passed us a couple of times on his quad bike as we were trying to set up, we stopped him and said it might be in his interest to know we were not happy with our site and that it was more appropriate for a combi. He assured us it was a van site. We pointed out the surrounding occupied sites which had vans with their awnings fully extended, and asked if we were getting the same dollar value. He shrugged his shoulders and said we could move to one of the sites backing onto the highway at the front of the park. We were not offered one of the spare sites at the back which were still vacant the following morning. Had our neighbours opened their windows and we did the same, we would not be able to walk between the two vans. We therefore had to use aircon for comfort. To add insult to injury we are Top Tourist members and feel we were treated very shabbily. We were going to stay for longer as we usually do in this town but moved on the following morning. Very unfriendly staff, bad staff response to complaints. Poor value for money ($34 2A per night, powered, peak season). We paid $30 because of TT discount.

Manager's name is Robyn & John Baldwin. This park is under new management as of Dec 2009. Very friendly, efficient reception. Park facilities were outlined and map to site highlighted. Level sites in clean shady surrounds. We had a brick slab of good size. Sites vary in size but most are easy to access. No room to park cars when unhitched except at right angle in front of van which could be a problem in peak season. Some large sites for overnighters who don't want to unhitch or large rigs. No road noise where we were. 4 amenity blocks so not far from any site. These were clean, private, with enough space to shower and dress without getting wet. No soap provided. Strong water pressure and good mobile phone, wireless and TV reception. There is a small pool under cover but most people use the lovely hot springs accessed by back gate and a short walk away (approx. 300 m wheelchair track and another way via steps). Barbecue area congenial and clean. Basic laundry with $3 for both washing machine and dryer. Dog friendly with nice walks outside the park along the river. No river view from park. Free RSL and Country Club bus pick up and return and tour booking facilities. Quiet, well run park suitable for any length of stay.
Date 05/2010. Park Rating 4.5: We would stay here again.

Very nice location about 8kms out of town and backs onto the river. Very relaxing and peaceful. It has a nice pool, restaurant (we didn't try it) and lots of wallabies in the park. In our opinion the only thing that spoils it is the amenities (see below). Friendly staff. Reasonable value for money ($27 2A per night, powered, peak season). Amenities are close to most sites, cleanliness was average, condition is poor, soap provided. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, no sites with concrete annex slabs, shade to some sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Basic laundry, you can use your mobile wireless (carrier used was Telstra, reception quality was 4). Peaceful, plenty of shade.. Clean pool is shaded. Suitable for a week or more.
Likes: Access to river walks with the dog and for fishing. Able to pick own site. Billabong in park is very pretty and nice to sit by. Dog off lead exercise area in park.
Dislikes: Sites a little tight, dusty and dry (not unusual for this part of the world). The amenities need major upgrading. They are very old but looked clean. Water from the shower pools into the dry area so nowhere dry to dress. The amenities are full of mozzies so may need the fly spray.
Added Touches: Each day a presentation on the history of the homestead is held at 3.00pm. Very interesting and worth going to. Devonshire teas available every day.
Local Information: Edith Falls are wonderful and worth the drive.

Stayed 2 nights $26 per night. Helpful and friendly reception. The homestead was built in the 1880's and is the oldest standing homestead in the NT. It offers travellers shady parkland, grassed and dirt caravan and camping sites, budget motel style accommodation, has a licensed bistro and kiosk, Devonshire tea, swimming pool and children's waterslide. We were told to pick our site which we did, a large shady dirt site, full of leaves (if you want shade you must have leaves), and this suited us fine. The two amenities blocks are close to most sites and were clean. Covered camp kitchen near our site was clean. No dump point. Free homestead tours, also night "tour" to see the crocs in the river. Plenty of birds. Wonderful large shady trees. We enjoyed our stay in this bushland park and would definitely stay again.

During our stay the park suffered from power outages twice which occurred in the early hours of the morning. This caused problems in the main office as well as the park itself. The problem was with NT Power and Water and not Nitmiluk Tours. However the staff couldn't do enough to help campers even though they were trying to cope with their own problems. We were most impressed. Very friendly staff, good staff response to complaints, staff explained park layout and facilities. Reasonable value for money ($39 2A per night, powered, peak season). We paid $26 because of 3rd night free voucher in tourist information booklet. Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to only some sites, cleanliness was average, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water - but not if busy, soap provided, paper towels/dryer provided, exhaust fans/good ventilation. Likes: It was out of town and more peaceful. The entertainment 6 nights a week by the pool during peak times
Dislikes: Shower cubicles are small. There are two blocks, the one by the pool is older, but the other one further over does not have a shelf in the shower and not enough hooks. The hot water was non-existent, but believe they had an issue with the solar system which seem to be fixed after a couple of days
Parking: 3 parking bays near visitors centre, follow the signs for campers
Added Touches: Free entertainment 6 nights a week during peak times
Local Information: Katherine Gorge Cruise/Flights. Marksies Camp Oven Cookout 3 nights a week at the museum is a must-do to taste local fare using native herbs along with Marksie humour and stories was wonderful and would recommend

Run by private enterprise, Nitmiluk Tours Pty Ltd, within the park. Most sites small 'back in and unhitch' sites. We found the big rig area much more open and roomy and suitable for drive through - with powered and unpowered sites. Power and water close to sites. Camp kitchens used mainly by group tour operators. Average staff friendliness. Price was higher than expected, reasonable value for money ($32 2A per night, powered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, sites will accommodate large motorhomes and 5th wheelers, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by. Good laundry, late checkout allowed (up to noon). Quiet, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, no permanents. Clean pool. Suitable for few days.
Likes: Location; set in bushland in the Nitmiluk National Park. Walk to landing for boating and canoeing in the gorge.

Jarnem and Gurrandalng Campsites, Keep River National Park
190 km west of Timber Creek. 48km east of Kununurra. Park abuts NT/WA border. Entry road is 3km east of border. Ph: 08 9167 8827. No pets allowed. Water is available from one point on the track in. The area is suitable for tents, trailers, motorhomes and caravans (no power). Gurrandalng is 15 kms from park entrance (from highway); Jarnem is 28 kms from park entrance. On gravel road, which is usually in good condition. However, avoid after rain. Jarnem camp has toilets and water available from a tank. Generators not permitted. Gurrandalng has toilets (water tank near park entrance). Generators permitted until 8.30 pm. Both camps have a loop road with some camp sites on either side - well spread out. Bollards prevent access for big rigs to all but a few campsites. Gurrandalng has room for about 15 outfits, without getting too crowded.

Gurrandalng Campsite is a great National Park camping area. There are two pit toilets within the grounds and they are well maintained on a daily basis. The large central tent camping area is an 'island' surrounded by bollards with one of the large rock formations in the centre of it which the kids (big & small) love to climb. There is about 9 or 10 parking bays large enough to accommodate up to a 22' van with the car unhitched. Bigger vans could enter the park circle road in an anti-clockwise direction and park parallel to the bollards and have their door entry onto the grassed central area. There is no water provided at this park; a tap is available on the left about 1k past the ranger station. This park gets very busy in peak season and as Jarnem was still closed, Jinumum was available for overflow camping (but with no campfires allowed). Great spot to eat all your left-overs before entering WA however you need to take all your rubbish out of the park with you; when camping separate all food scrapes from other rubbish otherwise you will have to do it at the check-point where they do thankfully provide latex gloves. At the checkpoint you can leave the peelings etc (compost material) in their bins but not the other non-composting rubbish. $3.30 per person per night. Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to all sites, were clean, condition is good. Mostly level sites, sites will accommodate medium to large vans, no sites with annex slabs, shade to some sites. Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade. Clean wood bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere. Suitable for few days.
Likes: The 2k Gurrandalng circuit walk is just stunning with a different beautiful view at every corner and lots of 'Bungle Bungle' type mounds and mountains. We also did the Jinumum Walk which has quite a range of aboriginal art at the turn-around point.
Added Touches: Ranger gives a campfire talk at 7.30pm on Wednesday evenings during peak season.
Roads: Although it's a dirt road into the park which is described in Camps 6 as 'rough' we found it fairly good in parts but corrugated in other parts and a better standard than some we've been on.

The last park just before entering Litchfield National Park. The rating given to this park does not depict the overall likeability of this park. It is a small park in a natural setting. Some powered and non-powered sites are well grassed and others have patchy grassed areas. The sites are large with good shade. The amenities block is adequate but not close to all sites. Attached to the park is a cafe with a bar that serves breakfast lunch and dinner. There is also a well maintained swimming pool. The management is very friendly and provide both a comprehensive verbal rundown with a map of the key sites within the park including road conditions. If you like bush sites then you would be happy here for a good week. Good value for money ($27 2A per night).

Likes: Some sites were undercover that could be used for some vans. Most sites were semi private with trees and palms in between
Dislikes: The amenities with very little dry change area and no bench
Parking: Plenty of parking however suggest you pull over close to office to let others pass by. Office is at the bar.
Added Touches: Tuesday nights they put on a Stockman's barbecue, I think for $15, we weren't there on this night, but was advertised
Local Information: Bar on site with all meals and snacks. Plenty of walks, falls and swimming holes. A tip if you go to Florence Falls, if you only want to see it, just head to lookout because if you walk down to the fall, you can't see much as you have to scramble over rocks to get a glimpse, unless you want to swim in the plunge pool of course.

What a wonderful part of the Top End, situated on the banks of the Mary River. The park has its own bar / restaurant. It is a working cattle property so sheds etc. are to be expected and add a bit of character. Amenities are transportable's but are clean. A good shower toilet block would really make this park. My biggest gripe is the menu, I feel they are trying too hard to be a 5 star restaurant when a simple steak or barra and chips and salad would be a lot more enjoyable instead of on a "bed of spinach and fennel". Stick to the bar snacks. Very friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Reasonable value for money ($30 1A per night, powered, shoulder season). This is a pleasant park, well lawned, and lots of big shady trees, and with a bit more effort could be made even nicer. A lot of money has been spent developing the cabins and main buildings but the caravan/camping area appears to have missed out. Permanent amenities need to be built in the caravan/camping area but probably due to the constant flooding of the Mary River the owners are reluctant to spend the money. A lot of tidying up around the camp area needs to be done, especially the large shed which was obviously used to house school or bus groups, this is now becoming a health hazard as well as an eyesore. We were not given any information on the park and had great difficulty in getting any tourist information. The resort has a licensed bar and restaurant with a large outdoor deck. Friendly staff. Price was higher than expected, reasonable value for money ($30 2A per night, powered, peak season). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to only some sites, were clean, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, exhaust fans/good ventilation. I couldn't find a website about this caravan park so was pleasantly surprised as it was very nice. The park itself is quite small but sites are a good size and thickly laid with road-base. There were lovely gardens around each site and a huge non-powered camping area. Over the back of this area is a permanent tent village run by one of the tour companies. The Bark Hut Inn has lots of character and we enjoyed eating from their reasonably priced menu. Very friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. This is a popular park and as you can park anywhere you like it really is best in best dressed to get the best spots. Very friendly staff. Reasonable value for money ($27 2A per night, powered, peak season). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to only some sites, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, separate bathroom, paper towels/dryer provided. Likes: Very nice atmosphere. Being able to park anywhere you wanted and being able to spread out was great.
Dislikes: The unisex ensuites were corrugated tin sheds and whilst not dirty were in need of a good scrub. It was very difficult to close the doors without making a noise so don't park near the amenities if light sleeper.
Added Touches: Reception sell local frozen mango - delish.

Lovely location, with campers choosing informal sites amongst tropical trees and palms. Taps and some power poles scattered throughout main area; long cords may be needed. Lightly grassed. Amenities block consists of unisex 'tin shed' style bathrooms with shower, toilet and basin with steps. Unsuitable for disability access. Also two separate toilets. Washing machines in breezeway between bathrooms (only two which wasn't enough). Very good camp kitchen with fridge, microwave, kettle, toaster, electric hot plate and free gas barbecue. No dump point, but there is a public dump point in town. Nice walks to river (can fish in river) and around wetlands. Booking needed or arrive early in the morning as camp only takes 42 rigs and on most days is 'full' by early afternoon. Water from own bore is safe to drink but has high calcium content like much of northern and central Australia. Being a few kms out of town, park is very quiet. Average staff friendliness. Price was as expected, good value for money ($25 2A per night, powered, peak season). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to only some sites, were clean, condition is reasonable. Mostly level sites, sites will accommodate large motorhomes and 5th wheelers, shade to most sites, drive-through sites. Basic laundry, good camp kitchen. Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, no permanents. Clean UC gas bbq (free). Suitable for month or longer.
Likes: On the edge of a wetlands, camp is well spread out and restricted to 42 rigs after which gate is closed. Those not requiring power and amenities can park well away from the rest on the banks of the Little Roper River. Lots of wildlife.
Parking: Plenty of room to park in front of office

Stayed 2 nights, $25.00 per night. Bruce was on reception and was friendly and helpful. I asked if we could get some shade and was told to pick our own site. This is a large bush park, with parking anywhere and everywhere. Grass was being watered so was green in areas. Taps and power are close only to some sites and others must use long leads and hoses. We got an excellent dirt/grass spot under a big tree. The amenities were unisex corrugated iron huts en-suite style, basic but clean. Cabins located at the far end of the park under palms and trees and bougainvillea. Bitter Springs within walking distance but some distance away. Springs are in a natural setting, with some natural slime, and quite deep. As I cannot swim we drove to the Homestead which is much shallower. We would stay again at Mataranka Cabins and Camping - it is quiet, friendly, lovely grounds and clean. No vacancy sign on gate on both days in the afternoon.

Was looking forward to staying at the hot springs, maybe it was late in the season but was a bit disappointed. Intended staying for a few days but only stayed for one. Average staff friendliness, staff explained park layout and facilities. Reasonable value for money ($27 2A, shoulder season). Likes: Not a great deal to like, maybe the hot springs and the nature show in the river. Fresh water crocs sleep on the banks and logs. People were swimming in the river. At night the turtles played in the river. It has a dog and dog free area.
Dislikes: The Bats. Because the bats were back sprinklers were turned onto the trees of a morning so a dip in the hot springs was a bit of a challenge. Large dry park that no one seemed too keen on maintaining.

The best we got was "I think Barry might be working the bar tonight, you can talk to him then if you like". Average staff friendliness, bad staff response to complaints. Poor value for money ($27 2A per night, shoulder season). Inadequate number of amenities, are close to only some sites, were dirty, condition is poor, water pressure is bad, there was inadequate hot water, paper towels/dryer provided. Adequate number of tourist sites, some level sites, poor night lighting, sites will accommodate large motorhomes and 5th wheelers, very few concrete annex slabs, shade to some sites, hard to negotiate into site, poor water quality, adequate taps close by. Basic laundry, no rec room, disabled facilities, no wireless internet available, you can use your mobile wireless (carrier used was Telstra, reception quality was 2). Quiet, open & roomy park, not enough shade, no permanents. No playground, no bbqs, no pool. Suitable for overnighter.
Likes: Proximity to the thermal pools at the NP
Dislikes: On the whole the park felt rundown and poorly cared for. The toilets were left uncleaned for 3 of the 4 days we were there, repairs are needed in both men's and women's toilets. The water quality left much to be desired. Homestead website quotes "Powered sites x 2 Adults $24" yet we were charged $27 for the privilege of using unclean facilities with unhelpful staff.
Parking: stress the length of your vehicle/trailer/caravan, staff fail to understand requirements of different vehicles, insist on inspecting the site before you pay.
Added Touches: None past peak season.
Roads: Good

Spacious park, lots of shaded sites but some sites full sun. Management very helpful and when requested gave me the choice of 5 or so available sites to choose from. Good tourist advice at reception on check-in and great fish feeding demo twice a day. Excellent food in restaurant with friendly staff. Close to township. Dump point in town behind public toilets in park opposite hotel. Can drive into dump point from 50m down Marten Road - heading N this is the first dump point from Tennant Creek; caravan parks along way don't allow emptying cassettes. Very friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice, staff helped us at the site, staff explained park layout and facilities. Very good value for money ($27 2A per night, powered). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to all sites, cleanliness was average, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, dry change area, exhaust fans/good ventilation, disabled facilities. Clean UC gas bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere. No playground. Suitable for few days, suitable for families, well maintained park.
Likes: Our site looked out onto open grassland with peacocks and horses at times. Our hose didn't quite reach our tap (which is in the process of being relocated closer to the site) and when I spoke with reception about it they arranged for a food quality hose to be loaned to us to link up to ours.
Dislikes: Our central ensuites (2M / 2F for the surrounding circle of sites) didn't appear to be cleaned one day during our stay.
Parking: Good check-in parking area
Added Touches: Free barramundi feeding demo twice a day with interesting facts re the fish; campers can enter water to try also.
Local Information: Bitter Springs 3k down Marten Rd. Homestead Springs out of town but much cleaner and better than the others.

Saddle Creek Rest Area, Newry
70 km east of NT/WA border. Free camping site with plenty of room for approximately 20 vans, comfortably spaced on level ground.

This is a free rest area about 70k east of the WA/NT border so it is extremely popular during the winter peak season with patrons tending to pull in here for the night to use up all their fresh vegetables & fruit. We arrived at 10am and got a good site on a little side loop away from the dust created by new arrivals. I thought the park was pretty full when we arrived but at least another 20 - 30 rigs managed to fit in before lights out. There is some shade around the boundary and the location of this park is stunning with the mountains behind forming a lovely backdrop. Inadequate number of amenities, are close to all sites, were dirty, condition is poor. Mostly level sites, sites will accommodate medium to large vans, shade to some sites. Mobile wireless not available.
Likes: There were two 'low flo' tanks in the park and a few rubbish bins. Cook and freeze left over vegies (potatoes must be peeled) rather than throw them away.
Dislikes: Two newish looking toilets provided but both were full to within 2' of the lid. The popularity of this rest area probably means it needs at least another two or those there emptied.

Another interesting park behind a roadhouse. Plusses being the cost and close positioning to fishing areas. Feeding of the crocs was great - especially down the back of the park. We chose the Wayside Inn, which was open and all the sites we were well grassed, some with a small concrete annex pad. Sites are of a good size and all, but the longest, rigs could remain hitched if desired. There was a sparkling pool but the paving surrounding it was a bit rough on the feet. Also only two plastic chairs were provided. The amenity block was small and just needed a bit of care and attention for it to be good. The shower I used had a strong flow of hot water but the water spurted out at all angles, including horizontally. The toilet paper was a good quality product that you can buy in any supermarket. The men's was cleaned the day we were there but the Ladies didn't appear to have been. Looking to the N the park was very attractive with trees, shrubs and a creek; to the south, unattractive with lots of ugly buildings. The park is situated far enough from the highway to minimise traffic noise and the only really negative factor was that, somewhere near the budget cabins some inconsiderate females were laughing and talking loudly until 3am. A surprisingly good park for a roadhouse and, as said above, with a bit more attention could be an excellent park. Suitable for a night or longer.

We liked the park. The ground was uneven but wasn't hard to find a spot to park. We loved the area with great walks to do at the Joe creek and the escarpment walk. The river was nearby and was great for wading in the shallow pools and rapids (keep a good crocodile lookout). The area was grassy and we did find shade. We got there early and had a pick of the sites. They are planting new trees so it will get better. Reasonable facilities. Good bar for the quiet ale with TV and Telstra pay phone. We didn't get mobile reception here at all. Got the odd TV reception. No fires. The rates were good at $10 per person. We liked it and stayed 3 nights and did all the walks and tracks. They are offering helicopter rides at the roadhouse. We didn't do one but others said they had and it was worth the time and money. They sell diesel at the roadhouse at a 25 cent premium to Katherine.
