Mt Bundy Station, Adelaide River
Turn off is just south of Adelaide River and then 2-3 kms off the highway. Turn off the Stuart Highway 800m south of Adelaide River opposite the old Loco, and then drive 2.7 kms along Haynes Road and the Station is on the left. Ph: 08 8976 7009. Dogs on leash.
Probably the worst park we have stayed at in the 17 months we have been travelling. We phoned and booked telling them we had a 30ft fifth wheeler. Rate quoted at $26 for 2 adults. On arrival they charged $30 because of the size of the rig which would not have made any difference on the site allocated. No water connection unless using a very long hose which people would drive over. Power was on the end of an extension lead originating from under a building. However, the site was very nice but very noisy from other campers. The amenities were woefully inadequate. There are roadside rest areas with better amenities. As the price charged is at the upper end of the scale, we expected better. We ended up moving to the Adelaide River Showgrounds at $20 with much better sites and facilities. Average staff friendliness, average staff response to complaints, staff helped us at the site. Price was much higher than expected, poor value for money ($30 2A per night, powered, peak season). Inadequate number of amenities, are close to only some sites, cleanliness was average, condition is poor. Inadequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, average sized sites, no sites with concrete annex slabs, shade to most sites. Poor laundry, no rec room. Noisy, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, no permanents. No bbqs, no playground. Clean pool is shaded, kid-safe pool area. Suitable for overnighter.
Likes: Locations.

Manager's name is Scott & Sue Withers. The caravan section caters for 19 powered sites with mostly drive through. The camping area is huge with some shade. Horse trail rides are provided with an experienced horseman as guide. The swimming pool is well maintained and clean, the toilets and showers are old but always clean. Drinks, milk and souvenirs are available at the office. One can see buffalos on the station and do a spot of fishing in the Adelaide River but be crocodile aware. Water supply is good. Other attractions while at Mt Bundy are the War Graves, Adelaide River Rail Station Museum, old WWII sites such as the Snake Creek Arms Depot and the site of the 119th Australian General Hospital, the Hospital Rail Siding, are worth a visit. Very friendly staff, good staff response to complaints, staff offered tourist advice, van parking assistance provided by staff. Price was as expected, good value for money ($26 2A per night, powered). Amenities are close to most sites, were clean, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, dry change area. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, average sized sites, no sites with concrete annex slabs, shade to most sites, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by. Poor laundry, no rec room, late checkout allowed (up to noon), good camp kitchen. Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere, no permanents. Clean gas bbq (free). No playground. Clean pool is shaded, kid-safe pool area, tables and chairs provided. Suitable for month or longer, suitable for families, well maintained park, park is considered kid-safe.

We used the special "3 nights for the price of 2" which lowered our per night price & was very good value. Friendly staff. Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to all sites, were clean, condition is very good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Some level sites, poor night lighting, large sites, no sites with concrete annex slabs, shade to most sites. No rec room. Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere, no permanents. UC gas bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting. No playground. Clean pool, kid-safe pool area, tables and chairs provided. Suitable for few days, suitable for families, park is considered kid-safe.
Likes: Our girls (aged 9) loved feeding the horses & Nigel the water buffalo. My husband & I loved sitting under the awning enjoying the country air & found the area where the caravan sites were very pretty.
Added Touches: Can do horse trail rides but we found these were not very good value for money (scenery on ride was very dry & uninteresting) & the some of the horses didn't behave very well. One of our daughters was on a horse that went extremely slow during most of the ride which meant she was well behind the group & we had to keep stopping for her but when she came to a downhill the horse would gallop down at high speed!! She wasn't expecting it the first time & nearly came off the horse & the owner didn't give us any warning of the horse's behaviour beforehand.

On road into Litchfield on left as you drive into town. Grassy sites, clean with good facilities. Friendly staff. Likes: Cool, green, clean with good facilities. Considering remoteness well watered.
Dislikes: Expensive, inadequate camp kitchen as dish washing facilities away from BBQ and eating area

On Doris Road, off Peninsula Road. About 60 km south of Darwin and 12 km off the Stuart Highway. 2 kms east of the Territory Wildlife Park. Top Tourist member. Ph: 08 8988 6277. Dogs allowed.
This is probably the worst caravan park we have come across in our travels. The Manager couldn't care less whether we stayed there or not. Unfriendly staff. Price was higher than expected, poor value for money ($27 2A per night, powered, peak season). Inadequate number of amenities, are close to only some sites, were dirty, condition is poor, water pressure is bad, there was inadequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, some unlevel sites, poor night lighting, small sites, concrete annex slabs to most sites, shade to some sites, drive-through sites, hard to negotiate into site, poor water quality. Poor laundry, no rec room. Noisy, claustrophobic park, not enough shade, a few permanents. Dirty electric bbq (free). Basic playground in poor condition. Dirty pool, pool is open to sun, pool area not considered kid-safe. Suitable for overnighter. There was absolutely nothing we liked about this park. Only stay if you are absolutely desperate!
Dislikes: There were many shower heads missing, so reduced number of available facilities. Ablutions were dirty, and didn't seem to have been cleaned at all on the day we stayed (Sunday). There was a charge of $9 per person to access the park's water slide. There were no footpaths thru sites to facilities so campers walked inside personal space at all times of day and night. Long term resident advised us owner refuses to spend any money on maintenance or upkeep, and it showed.
Parking: Outside
Added Touches: No added touches
Local Information: Close to Berry Springs

UPDATED REPORT NEEDED

Spent 1 day on the way up north and 4 days on the way back. Great for visiting Lichfield National Park. Setting was fantastic if you like relaxing, abundance of bird life, plenty of shady trees, "park wherever you want and we will see you some time this evening for your money" $5 per person plus $3 for power, and if you stay a week you pay for 5 nights. Showers were a bit below par but where will you find a place with bath mats and soap and razors provided and free laundry? Water is not so good (full of iron deposits) but that will improve we were told. Very friendly staff, staff offered tourist advice. Price was lower than expected, very good value for money ($13 2A per night).

Roadhouse and caravan park. 500 meters from Corroboree Billabong Turnoff and 45 minutes from Kakadu National Park, Arnhem Highway, Arnhem Land. Ph. 08 8978 8920.
This is a great overnight park, and very well priced - $22 night 1, $11 night 2, $22 night 3, $11 night 4 and on. They have pet crocodiles, pigs & piglets, Brahma bulls, albino buffalo etc. Basically the powered sites are on mainly well grassed areas, water pressure is great, though ablutions are a little bit tired, though clean. Great meals at the roadhouse and very friendly service. We stayed 2 x nights and we would happily stay there again.
Likes: Right on highway, great to break your journey - nice little swimming pool, interesting penned animals for children to see at no extra charge.
Dislikes: Some water taps and fittings have been damaged and lean over, but are still functional.

On Oolloo Road. Turn off Stuart Highway at Hayes Creek and follow signs, just north of Hayes Creek, north of Katherine. Ph: 08 8978 2479 or 1800 155 119. No pets allowed.

Average staff friendliness, reasonable value for money ($30 2A 2C per night, powered, peak season). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to most sites, cleanliness was average, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, paper towels/dryer provided, exhaust fans/good ventilation. Adequate number of tourist sites, some level sites, average sized sites, no sites with concrete annex slabs, shade to most sites. No rec room. Open & roomy park, plenty of shade, too many permanents. Basic playground in poor condition. Clean pool is shaded, kid-safe pool area, tables and chairs provided. Suitable for overnighter.
Likes: We did enjoy our stay here because we met up with some friends & there was hardly any other tourist vans there during the 3 nights we stayed. We were able to have a camp fire every night & sometimes felt like we had the park to ourselves.
Dislikes: The park is not well maintained anymore & has a run-down feel to it. There were a lot of workers there who stay permanently & took over the camp kitchen each night so we avoided that area. The general atmosphere of the park wasn't great & if we weren't there with our friends would have only stayed 1-2 nights.

Sullivans Creek, Gregory National Park
Rest area located 178 km south-west of Katherine or 18km east of Victoria River. Victoria Highway ($ donation parking).
UPDATED REPORT NEEDED

Stayed 1 night. This was our first "freebie/donation" stopover, and we did not know what to expect. It was getting late so we decided to pull over at Sullivans Creek (well signposted), which was on dirt, a little off the main highway. On entering the loop-road we found there were 9 caravans and mobile homes squashed in. Caravans that arrived after us had to travel further as there was no space left. There were more vans here than at some paid parks at which we had stayed. The stop is located near a creek, and travellers told us that a crocodile had been spotted there, so we kept our distance. There is water there (not drinkable), a long drop toilet and a wood fireplace. Late in the night campers arrived and under torchlight set up in the grassed area in the middle of the loop. It was a very dark quiet peaceful night, with very friendly travellers around us. We enjoyed our first "freebie" stop and this gave us courage to try a few more. Suitable for large rigs, but you have to get there early.

This is a service station with a large area behind and down by the river for a caravan park. Dog friendly. Lots of room to spread out and the staff work hard to keep the area grassed instead of dust. Lots of shade. Fairly quiet being well off the road. Swimming pool. Basic amenities but clean and flowers in the ladies. We chose the unpowered site at $10 for 2A, or $20 for power. We enjoyed this park, very relaxed and well-maintained and good value. Would suggest staying here and driving into Douglas Hot Springs.

A well maintained park with many palm and other trees. Shown to site, then into office to pay. Staff are working hard to keep dust down and grass growing. Amenities seem to be just coping with visitor numbers. August is European holiday time, so park is really under pressure, with many campervans coming in every day. The pool area is very nice. There is a restaurant, bar, Internet centre and booking office for Yellow Waters cruises (a must do). Water pressure needs improving, no sullage. In season, free sausage sizzle Wednesday nights and free pancakes on Sundays. They had a flood go through earlier in the year. Necessary work after seems to have made this a really nice park now.

Lakeview Park, Jabiru
Lot 955 Lakeview Crescent. 700m from GPO. Ph: 08 8979 3144. No pets allowed.
Small park, but with a lot of unused space. All sites are ensuite and have an annex slab. Reasonable sized ensuites, no cupboard or shelf but ample bench space to unpack toiletries onto. Ensuites are serviced daily, which is a bonus, but we had a tube of medicine disappear. Manager said cleaners denied having seen it, and that it wasn't in the waste bin used by the cleaners, but we had it when we arrived and didn't have it 2 days later. Whistling kite steals any food that is left unattended or even attended if you are not careful. Friendly staff, average staff response to complaints, staff offered tourist advice, staff explained park layout and facilities. Price was as expected, good value for money ($30 2A per night, ensuite). Water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, large sites, concrete annex slabs to most sites, shade to some sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Good laundry, no rec room. Peaceful, open & roomy park, not enough shade, family/friendly atmosphere, no permanents. Clean UC gas bbq (free), bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. No pool. Suitable for a week or more, suitable for families, well maintained park, park is considered kid-safe.
Dislikes: Could do with a pool in this climate. They lost a lot of trees in the cyclone a couple of years ago, the replacements are still quite small so it isn't as shady as it could be.
Local Information: Jabiru is in the middle of Kakadu National Park, with all the walking and tours that implies. The Ranger Uranimum Mine tour isn't worth the $30 charged, you see the open cut mine but none of the processing. We did both Guluyambi (East Alligator River) and Yellow Water boat cruises, if you only do one we definitely recommend Guluyambi.

Katherine Low Level Caravan Park, Katherine
Katherine is 385 kilometres north of Alice Springs and 91 kilometres south of Pine Creek and the turn off from the south to Kakadu. From WA - turn left on approaching outskirts onto Zimin Drive. From other direction - drive to almost end of main street and turn left into Victoria Road. Pass 2 other caravan parks until edge of township (about 4 kms). Turn right after road bends onto Zimin Drive. Once on Zimin Drive, take care on approach as road twists sharply and there is a one-way bridge before the left turn into Shadforth Road - this road does not appear in many Satellite Navigation units (GPS). Ph: 08 8972 3962 or 1800 501 984. BIG4 member. No pets.

$27 per night with BIG4 discount. The park is signposted from the Stuart Highway both north and south of the town. It looks very welcoming from the moment you enter the gate as there are large expanses of lawn and trees with the caravan sites situated at the rear of the grounds. The toilet block is large with roomy shower and toilet cubicles. Good laundry facilities, small restaurant and pool. Sites are a good size, on grass and most have good shade.

Park revisited after three years and still the best in Katherine. Now a BIG4 member again. The night lighting is considered poor. Shady and well grassed sites, excellent pool and bistro area. Amenities are adequate for numbers and excellently maintained, with one complaint: shower water fluctuates in temperature each time another person turns their shower on or off, meaning you can burn or freeze if not alert. However a minor inconvenience. Powered site $30 2A before BIG discount a little high, but worth paying for the ambience. Date 6/2008. Park Rating 4:

Park is mainly motel and cabins. All powered sites are ensuite. Reasonable ensuites, with bench, towel rail and 2 hooks, plus a shelf for unpacking onto, plus an outside area with laundry tub. Motel restaurant on-site, we didn't try it so don't know how good it is. Friendly staff, staff explained park layout and facilities. Nice quiet park that is part of a motel resort complex. All sites were ensuites which we believe are to be upgraded in the future. Great pool, grass sites, some shade. Resort is very quiet during the day and seems to cater for bus touring groups which arrive quite late in the afternoon and leave early in the morning. Friendly staff. Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($35 2A 2C per night powered). Park is quiet although, the night we left a major domestic dispute went most of night, included smashed rear window of car. Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, were clean, condition is reasonable, there was adequate hot water. Clean pool is shaded, kid-safe pool area. Suitable for few days, well maintained park.
Dislikes: No privacy in showers, communal dressing areas all ladies used our ensuites or wore our bathers to shower.
Parking: Only one space to book in park. Very busy but road parking available as long as no road trains pulled up.
Added Touches: Roadhouse attached to park was very clean and sold great barra & chips but it was very expensive, so was their fuel.

Dog friendly. Large park which backs on to the Katherine River and an easy 5 minute walk to the hot pools. Long walk to town (2.5km). Sites were generally well laid out, most having paved annex areas. Staff friendly and can book tours. Amenities basic but clean, 4 blocks spread throughout the park. Camp kitchen, swimming pool. Sites were a good size but the roads are a little narrow in the busy tourist season, so can make backing a little stressed. Next door to shop, café, newsagent and fuel station. We enjoyed this park and would stay again.

Easy to find, from the north turn right immediately over the bridge, from the south, go through the town and turn left just before the bridge, then drive about 2kms. A spacious, well-maintained park. Sites are a good size with most having an attractive pink-coloured brick annex pad. The park abounds in large, shady trees and many sites have 'tropical' garden beds around them. There are four amenities blocks, with laundries. The large shower cubicles have good quality shower curtains that don't wrap around you when the water is flowing. Showers have strong pressure. Ceiling fans are going 24hrs a day so, despite the heat in Katherine the amenity blocks are always a pleasant temperature. Roadways are wide with plenty of manoeuvring room. Pets are welcome in a separate 'dog' section which is close to the entrance and pool. Pool is fairly small, with a shade cloth over which keeps the water fairly 'refreshing'. On site are a shop, take-away food outlet and a restaurant. The office wil arrange all tour bookings. Wireless internet through Nomadnet is available throughout the park ($5 for 1 hour). Staff are friendly and helpful and Katherine Hot Springs are a short walk (100 yards) from the back gate (locked at night). A coin-in-the-slot Internet kiosk is also available (Not working during our stay). Suitable for any length of stay.

Springvale Homestead Budget Motel and Caravan Park, Katherine
7kms from Katherine township on the banks of the Katherine River. Travel up the Victoria Highway and follow the "Springvale Homestead" sign to Shadforth Road. Dogs on leash.
Stayed 2 nights $26 per night. Helpful and friendly reception. The homestead was built in the 1880's and is the oldest standing homestead in the NT. It offers travellers shady parkland, grassed and dirt caravan and camping sites, budget motel style accommodation, has a licensed bistro and kiosk, Devonshire tea, swimming pool and children's waterslide. We were told to pick our site which we did, a large shady dirt site, full of leaves (if you want shade you must have leaves), and this suited us fine. The two amenities blocks are close to most sites and were clean. Covered camp kitchen near our site was clean. No dump point. Free homestead tours, also night "tour" to see the crocs in the river. Plenty of birds. Wonderful large shady trees. We enjoyed our stay in this bushland park and would definitely stay again.

Well signposted. Visitors' Centre handles tour bookings as well as park payments; busy but well staffed, pleasant and competent. No bookings taken, so wise to arrive by midday (mid July) if requiring power, limited to 40 sites. Most sites shady but uneven in size, some quite narrow. Mostly level, quite dusty. River water, power and sullage close. Large, unstructured area with shade and full grass cover for unpowered vans and camping. Two amenities blocks with plenty of hot water, very clean. Ordinarily numbers quite adequate, but stressed when school bus parties present. Soap and paper towel provided. 4 washing machines & dryers. Personal appliances can be recharged on power points in common areas. Free gas and wood bbqs, camp kitchen with sinks, microwave, fridges and picnic tables under cover. More picnic tables on large shady grassed area central to all sites. Minimal night lighting. Bird life extraordinary. At Visitors' Centre, excellent displays, ranger on duty, souvenirs, internet with USB snacks and café meals at tables on large veranda overlooking gorge. Boat tours of gorge, canoe hire and challenging walks. Very nice place for stay of several days. Good value at $24 (2A, powered)

Dislikes: Very small and dusty powered sites - no grass, just dirt. Not really up to scratch for an Icon National Park. Does not present a quality Australian image to the many international tourist that visit this location. Would be very hot and uncomfortable during the hot part of the year. Probably much better to have an unpowered site if you are self sufficient power wise as you can probably find a shady and grassy spot.

Mary River Park, Mary River
This park is on the Arnhem Highway 35km from Kakadu National Park, turn right just after crossing the Mary River. Ph: 08 8978 8877 or 1800 788 844. Family Parks member. All pets allowed.
This is a pleasant park, well lawned, and lots of big shady trees, and with a bit more effort could be made even nicer. A lot of money has been spent developing the cabins and main buildings but the caravan/camping area appears to have missed out. Permanent amenities need to be built in the caravan/camping area but probably due to the constant flooding of the Mary River the owners are reluctant to spend the money. A lot of tidying up around the camp area needs to be done, especially the large shed which was obviously used to house school or bus groups, this is now becoming a health hazard as well as an eyesore. We were not given any information on the park and had great difficulty in getting any tourist information. The resort has a licensed bar and restaurant with a large outdoor deck. Friendly staff. Price was higher than expected, reasonable value for money ($30 2A per night, powered, peak season). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to only some sites, were clean, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, exhaust fans/good ventilation. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, large sites, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by. Poor laundry. Peaceful, open and roomy, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere, no permanents. No bbqs. Basic playground in average condition. Clean pool is open to the sun, pool area not considered kid-safe, tables and chairs provided. Suitable for a few days, suitable for families, well maintained park.
Likes: The sites were beautifully grassed and the sprinklers were going 24/7. There are two swimming pools, one by the cabins and the other next to the restaurant.

This is a very nice park beside the Mary River. Lots of lovely green grass with shady trees. Amenities are demountables, which were very clean. The staff were very friendly & helpful. Nothing was to much trouble. There is a nice pool although small was clean and pleasant to swim in. There is also a very nice licensed Restaurant & Bar that serve breakfast, lunch & dinner. Although a pleasant and peaceful park we thought it was a bit overpriced at $30 per night.

4705 Martins Rd, Bitter Springs. Turn off Stuart Highway at north end of Mataranka, park is 3km just before Bitter Springs Thermal Pool. Ph: 08 8975 4838. All pets allowed on a leash.
Stayed 2 nights, $25.00 per night. Bruce was on reception and was friendly and helpful. I asked if we could get some shade and was told to pick our own site. This is a large bush park, with parking anywhere and everywhere. Grass was being watered so was green in areas. Taps and power are close only to some sites and others must use long leads and hoses. We got an excellent dirt/grass spot under a big tree. The amenities were unisex corrugated iron huts en-suite style, basic but clean. Cabins located at the far end of the park under palms and trees and bougainvillea. Bitter Springs within walking distance but some distance away. Springs are in a natural setting, with some natural slime, and quite deep. As I cannot swim we drove to the Homestead which is much shallower. We would stay again at Mataranka Cabins and Camping – it is quiet, friendly, lovely grounds and clean. No vacancy sign on gate on both days in the afternoon.

This park is on the Roper River, you can choose an unpowered site on the river or higher up for the powered sites near the amenities. The amenities are centralised and like ensuites with the shower/toilet combined. Buildings were corrugated iron and basic but clean. We considered the amenities very reasonable for the Territory. What we like most was the 4-minute walk to Bitter Springs Thermal Pools - just amazing and a natural paradise. Sites were where ever you chose to park, no regimented sites or roads. Cost was $22 for 2A for power.

We stayed at the homestead for 6 days and found it to be absolutely perfect. All new amenities cleaned twice daily cheapest drinks on the track and meals cheaper than any we found, the thermal pools are a must and Stevie's Swimming Hole only a short walk. We caught barra 200m from our van. Free entertainment every night. Free guided walks. Free midday movie. Next year free barra feeding and Free croc and snake show. We found value for money with all the freebies the best we had come across. We also stayed at Bitter Springs but the smell was over powering and I'm not keen on swimming in deep water with crocs and snake with big mongrel dogs running all over. Much nicer in the soothing waters off the thermal pools. Very friendly staff, good staff response to complaints, staff offered tourist advice, van parking assistance provided by staff, staff explained park layout and facilities. No bookings taken as this is a national park. Reception staffed by a series of young people. Our girl was pleasant but slightly harassed, and did not explain site arrangements clearly. Two sections for vans, one with smallish very organised sites, not all level. The other is undefined overflow space with randomly placed power poles serving up to 6 vans. Very difficult to park considerately, while avoiding trees and tall sprinkles. Latecomers very confused and disadvantaged. In this section, water is by bucket from communal taps. Shower block fairly new. Clean and fresh but drainage flows across floor between cubicles. Solar hot water ran out about 5pm. Souvenirs, bar, meals, replica of historic Elsey Homestead; live country music entertainment; quite audible but not unpleasant and didn't go late. At $22 (2A, powered) reasonable value; wouldn't be hurrying back in mid July. Thermal Pools interesting to experience but unpleasantly crowded. By the position and appearance of resort entrance, the impression is given that you would have to be staying there to use the pools and undertake the walks. In fact the public has free access to this national park resource.

Camps-4 says "Small vehicles only" - no longer the case. Older part of campground has well established trees. Shade is scanty in newer extension. All sites unpowered, level, quite widely separated by natural bush, most with access to well maintained grassy "commons". Small vehicles accommodated in reverse-in bays. Sites for larger vans run parallel to access roads just wide enough for the van. The stumps separating gravel from grass end up in under-awning space. In our case this prevented the placement of ground sheet and table/chairs. This was a problem with shade at such a premium and gravel area muddy from enthusiastic watering prior to our arrival. Amenities clean and airy, adequate in number, hot water flow affected by use in other showers. Several washing machines, washing up sinks without plugs (!), water taps for bucketing at amenities block, free gas bbqs. No night lighting. Shady grassed picnic area and café adjacent. Falls and clear, cool pool at 150m. Good walking trail leads up around falls, over cascades further upstream. Ranger's talk selected evenings during season. Suitable for a stay of several nights. Park is in two sections, both controlled by the Wayside Inn at the western end of the tiny township. The eastern section is well grassed but had little shade; the western section has huge shady trees but dust instead of grass. We stayed in the western section so cannot comment on the eastern. Powered sites were mainly in the central area of the park and were poorly designed drive throughs, quite narrow, and two caravans were expected to park side by side. Other powered sites were against the side fence of the park. Little or no water to the central sites. Amenities were sub-standard and none too clean, requiring demolition rather than refurbishment. The small pool was clean, so a swim in that substituted for a shower! The Inn sells basic groceries and take away food - the hamburger was one of the best I've had in a long while - as well as all fuels including autogas, and naturally has a licensed bar area. At five each evening a staff member feeds the freshwater crocodiles in Timber Creek behind the park. Max's cruise of the Victoria River runs at 4pm each day - cost a rather high $80pp - so to do the cruise only an overnight stop is required. Although expectations of roadhouse caravan parks should never be too high, the standard of this one is pretty low. $20 for 2A on a powered site considered only just reasonable. Suitable for overnight only.

When you pay at the Timber Creek Hotel you are given the choice of the Gunami or Wayside Inn parks. They are next to each other and you can go from one to the other via a gate in the dividing fence. We chose the Wayside Inn, which was open and all the sites we were well grassed, some with a small concrete annex pad. Sites are of a good size and all, but the longest, rigs could remain hitched if desired. There was a sparkling pool but the paving surrounding it was a bit rough on the feet. Also only two plastic chairs were provided. The amenity block was small and just needed a bit of care and attention for it to be good. The shower I used had a strong flow of hot water but the water spurted out at all angles, including horizontally. The toilet paper was a good quality product that you can buy in any supermarket. The men's was cleaned the day we were there but the Ladies didn't appear to have been. Looking to the north the park was very attractive with trees, shrubs and a creek; to the south, unattractive with lots of ugly buildings. The park is situated far enough from the highway to minimise traffic noise and the only really negative factor was that, somewhere near the budget cabins some inconsiderate females were laughing and talking loudly until 3am. A surprisingly good park for a roadhouse and, as said above, with a bit more attention could be an excellent park. Suitable for a night or longer.

Price was as expected, reasonable value for money ($20 2A per night powered). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to only some sites, cleanliness was average, condition is reasonable, there was adequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, some level sites, poor night lighting, large sites, drive-through sites. Basic laundry, no rec room. Quiet, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere. No bbqs, no playground, no pool. Suitable for few days.
Likes: The wide open space. Its informality - essentially a large paddock with spaced power poles. This allowed wide spacing between rigs. Loved its setting by the escarpment and river.
Dislikes: Having to share amenities with roadhouse patrons, locals and bus tour groups passing through - made them grubby fairly quickly, and with some attachments broken. Is occasional road train noise at night.
Parking: Stay clear of petrol bowsers.
Local Information: Meals available at roadhouse. Barking owls at night. Couple of excellent walk tracks nearby in National Park. Also access to Victoria River for fishing and boat launching.
Roads: Is on Highway 1 - bitumen - usually in good condition, although may be some sections needing repair soon after a really big wet season. Road is well marked and signed and fine for towing on.

Litchfield Safari Park, Wangi
Also known as Wangi Tourist Park. 83 km from Stuart Highway, via Batchelor and through Litchfield National Park. 170 kilometres south of Darwin via Batchelor (sealed road) or 146 kilometres via Berry Springs (42km unsealed road - 2WD and caravan access). Part of the Litchfield Tourist Precinct. Turn left 4kms past the Wangi Falls turnoff when coming from Batchelor. 1.2kms of well maintained dirt road. Ph: 08 8978 2185. All pets allowed.
Nice quiet park. Grassed & shady. $30 per night if you have a air conditioner in your van or $25 per night if you don't have one. This is because the park is run on generator power. Amenities average, concrete floors, large shower cubicles with bench, hooks & shampoo holder. There is no soap or paper towels. When we were there, there was mould on the shower walls and cobwebs. There is also a washing machine in the ladies & men's amenity. $4/load. No washing tubs. The park has a small kiosk. Also not far from the park is a nice cafe & souvenir shop. Would stay here again as it is close to Wangi Falls, which is a beautiful swimming hole.

Mew managers took over while we were there. We paid for a week, extra 3% if you pay by credit card. All taps for your caravan is not drinkable as the water is pumped from a creek, they do have one tap for drinking and tried to fill a small bottle for drinking and the water ran out. They did have a dump point, and it was a black plastic container (same size as a 44 gallon drum) and when I went to use it, the dump point was full and looked like it was not emptied for a long time. As this park was a bit remote they had their only generators for our power and out of 7 days we were there 6 days the power went out between 1 - 3 time and a few brownouts. The pool was a small above ground pool but they used milk crates to climb in and out of the pool. There was no mobile phone signal but they did have a phone you can use with pre paid cards. 3 days after we were there new managers took over and within a few days we saw improvements in the park the toilets/showers were so much cleaner and the atmosphere in the park improved heaps. The last day we were there the power didn't go out so I believe the new managers fixed the power problem. The owner of the park was friendly and hopefully with the new managers (who are very friendly) could solve a number of problems. Price was lower than expected, poor value for money ($30 2A per night). Amenity number was adequate to cope with the number of people, are close to most sites, cleanliness was average, condition is reasonable, water pressure is bad, there was adequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, average sized sites, concrete annex slabs, poor water quality. Basic laundry, no rec room. Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, no permanents. Clean gas bbq (free), dismal bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting. No playground. Dirty pool is open to sun, pool area not considered kid-safe, tables and chairs provided. Suitable for few days.
Likes: Green grass, trees.
Dislikes: Lack of drinking water; dump point full; power blackouts.
Parking: Had a nice sport to park to book a site
Local Information: Litchfield National Park, so much to see.

Manager's name is Don. Safari cabins were excellent with their own BBQ, deck and outside sink. The shower in the ingeniously attached bathroom would put a lot of houses to shame. Be sure to ask for one of the elevated cabins. The best and most well appointed safari cabins we have come across thus far. All pets allowed. Friendly staff, good staff response to complaints. Price was as expected ($800 2A C1 per week cabin). Cabins were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, poor water quality. Basic laundry, no rec room. Peaceful, open & roomy park, plenty of shade, family/friendly atmosphere, no permanents. Clean gas bbq (free), congenial bbq area atmosphere. No playground. Clean pool is open to the sun, pool area not considered kid-safe. Suitable for few days, suitable for families, well maintained park, park is considered kid-safe.
Likes: Great bush feel to it. Plentiful wildlife.
Dislikes: Water needs boiling before drinking and the amount of filtered water provided at the amenities block was totally inadequate as it was drained empty 95% of the time.
Local Information: Litchfield National Park is a mecca for swimming. If you don't like crowds the weekends and school holidays are best avoided or go to the areas that require a bit of a walk to access such as Tjaetaba Falls or Walker Creek.

Open woodland park with many trees, not much genuine shade. Sites level, grassed and numbered but not well defined. Some angst amongst the patrons about territorial rights. Water (to be boiled for drinking) and power fairly close; extension leads can be borrowed from management. No sullage. Night lighting in amenities. Amenities of basic construction, cleaning adequate, numbers not sufficient in busy season. Individual bathroom for disabled or parents with children. Washing up sinks, 1 washing machine each in gents and ladies amenities, good line space in sun. Power points for hairdryers, not to be used for charging appliances. Miniscule above ground plastic pool. Bbqs provided, firewood has to be gathered outside park. At 4 km from Wangi Falls, it was a convenient alternative when national park campground found to be full. Stayed only one night and moved to national park ground next morning. At $25 (2A powered) good enough value for those with a proper site. Not particularly good value for us as our "site" turned out to be the walkway to amenities, with woodpile and communal bbq. Suitable for a stay of several nights. We wouldn't return.

This park is actually just across the road, outside the National Park and therefore able to take dogs. Easy 4 km drive to Wangi Falls. We paid $16 for an unpowered site for 2A per night, as we thought $25 per night for power was a little high but understandable as they generate their own power. Plenty of room to spread out. The amenities block was basic but crowded for the amount of guests in peak time. Can be very dusty, but the managers are working hard to keep water on to grassed sites. There is only one public phone that takes a phone away card, but public Telstra phone at Wangi. We thought this park was good value because of its location.
