Bethany was born at 32 weeks gestation, as she was not growing in utero. Delivered by Caesarean Section due to transverse lie. Bethany was in special care nursery for 8 weeks because she was not feeding very well and was not gaining weight.
MEDICAL PROBLEMS.
Atrial Septal Defect
Ventricular Septal Defect
Both of which have spontaneously closed within 12 months
Bilateral blocked Tear Ducts. Probed several times until 4 years old OK now
Umbilical Hernia ...still present
Beth has had tubes (grommets) inserted in both of her ears, first in Feb 1995, she is currently on her 4th set.
Two days before Beths 1st birthday she started having prolonged febrile convulsions, she has had numerous episodes which required hospitalisation.
Beth is on Epilim l2Omgs twice daily, which may be controlling them, as she only seems to have them when she gets a temperature. Prolonged seizures with ear infections, shorter ones with throat infection, chicken pox, gastro.
PERSONALITY
Beth has the most delightful disposition, infectious giggle that makes everyone laugh, she is generally a quiet little girl but lets you know when she wants something. She is a joy to have around. Beth is a bit of a thrill seeker and loves surprises and going fast such as on the toboggan ride (with dad). She loves going driving in the car and looks around at everything and gets excited at the big trucks.
DEVELOPMENT
Has been slow, Beth can now remain sitting for long periods, rolls around the floor and plays with toys, She can see well and her hearing is fine. She loves music. Beth has AFOs for her ankles and can stand in a standing frame for nearly an hour. Beth is non-verbal apart from a yeah sound that is part giggle. She understands a lot of what is said to her and will answer yeah or shake her head appropriately.
1996 Beth went to Yooralla, for playgroup once a week :- 3 Years old.
1997 Yooralla kinder half a day twice a week 4 year old.
1998 She now attends a Special Developmental School :- full school hours where she has physiotherapy Speech Therapy and occupational therapy, as well as Swimming and Riding for the Disabled. Her skills vary between 9-12 months physically and between 9 months and 3 years intellectually.
NUTRITIONAL STATUS
Current Weight 9.7 kg Height 88.5cm Head circ 44 cm's. Beth is eating fork mashed foods. She loves mashed vegies and meat , small lumps are ok but she still won't chew properly. Her favourite of course is ice-cream and quite often wont go to bed unless she has had it.
TEETHING
Beths two front teeth erupted at about 18 months of age, and she now has nearly a full set.
HEALTH
1995 was a good year for Beth, Since having the tubes in her ears she did not had any trouble with them, She had one bout of Croup And although she has a had a high fever or two she did not had any -seizures this year.
1996 another fairly good year . A couple of throat infections and gastro once. Only one or two seizures
1997 not as good year, couple of seizures, ear infections more ear tubes, coughs, colds. chicken pox, finished off with tonsillitis & short seizure, lost a lot of weight
1998 ear infection 1.5 hour seizure o/d on Valium intensive care overnight. More ear tubes. Ear pits abscess hospital drainage. Ear pits removed. Gastro seizure hospital. Thats 5 times in hospital this year so far.
SLEEPING
Beth knows when she is tired and loves going to bed when she is. She will still have an afternoon nap but only at home and occasionally at school. Beth generally sleeps all night and has done since age 4 although she has periods during the night where she appears to be just dozing or awake and lying quietly.
