Mount Gutter's more recent history is dominated by Harry Halt's One Flag regime which lasted from the early 1970s to the late 1980s. The town cheerfully suffered a government which was at odds with the rest of the Western World in matters such as library-lending rights, dramaturgy, right hand turns from a public carriageway and even the availability of toilet paper.

Since the defeat of the Flaggists in 1992, it has become a popular holiday destination for librarians, playwrights, bus drivers and freelance freeloading travel journalists.
