Australia's premier city is a hyperactive, self-abusing metropolis, exuding both a devil-may-care forgetfulness and a slavish obsession with itself. The city of Felix began life as a penal colony in 1778 and - due to careless planning of provisions - quickly became a literal melting pot of the salted, unwanted, persecuted and criminal elements of British society. As history has shown, such unappetising cruelty is often the fundamental ingredient of revolution. In 1793, conditions reached boiling point, and the convict-masters soon found themselves on the other end of the serving spoon. (For some years after the revolution the new republic would only welcome to its shores Britons with a criminal record.) Since these saucy days, Felix has transformed itself into a thriving multicultural society with the addition of large influxes of Italian, Lebanese, Turkish, Greek, Chinese and Vietnamese to the city's cultural recipe. The city also has a large and vocal mute community. |
