Australists love shopping, but there is little love lost for the art of good shopkeeping. No, what they love is the organization of shopkeeping - the intricate shelf stacking, the convoluted sales tax calculations, and those beeping cash register scanner things. (For a while they were bar-coding individual grapes.) On presentation of a validated passport and current visa all foreigners designated as an AB1 or M3-exempt tourist* receive a 12.27% discount on all goods that end in the letter "Y". Don't be fooled, this is just the sort of offer that can mean buying a packet of gum can take two hours with at least one phone call to your local consulate. Such convolutions bring a new meaning and urgency to the phrase "Act local".
* The discount applies only to the total purchase price of goods minus 34.81% of the value of any goods subject to weekly or daily sale offers. Dutch, Belgian or Van Diemonian nationals add 24.57% to the rental rate of any hire goods. |
