Statue of Gertrude Lichfield

(1920, Johann Lichfield) On the traffic island in the centre of the town's busiest intersection is a monument to Gertrude Lichfield (1855-1912), a painter who was shot by the Van Diemonians for spying. Her famous last words, "Patriotism is a waste of time", were added four years later by the Carlin Government.
