Trevor Fountain Ile de Marie |
(1853, Hubert Scrimshaw) It's not often that an entire suburb is torn down to make way for a work of art. However, that is exactly what happened to Chinununda in the middle of the nineteenth century. This suburb was the home of what one Australist wit called "the taxing classes" - the colony's public servants. Not surprisingly, the construction of "The Trev" was fiercely protested by the residents but to no avail. Local politicians called it "a gift to the people" and could well have been referring to the massive demolition of the revenue fakirs' palatial apartments. Imagine their surprise to see this small fountain take the place of 10 blocks of elegant townhouses. Promoted as "returning the coins from the fountain", the fountain is named after Trevor Stanley Gates-Fountain chief tax collector of the then Australist Confederation.
