The Roaches of Charly

Seaport

(1953, The Soapes Twins) These rearing marble cockroaches (entitled Controllers of the Universe) sculpted by schizophrenic Siamese twins, Michelle and Melinda Soapes were raised from the bottom of Carlin Bay, after the ship transporting them to the Venice Bienale, The Charly, sunk in high seas in 1954.

The Roaches were brought to Seaport in 1958, and given pride of the place in the town square. Unfortunately, in 1960, a visiting Paradiddlean Councillor admiringly offered to purchase them and the Roaches were quickly and quietly hidden in local farmer, Bob Spray's hayshed where they remain today as a local embarrassment.

Spray Farm, Spray Road, Seaport, Messages left at the town hall.
