January 1979 | Australis was discovered by Melanesians more than 40,000 years ago. It's official White European History, however began in 1777, when a British expedition landed and claimed the island continent as its own. A later attempt by the British Government (still ticked off about the now-independent American states) to establish a penal colony in this Southern Land occurred in 1788. Unfortunately for penal enthusiasts, the jailers quickly discovered that living conditions on this new continent were harsher that than anything they could inflict on their prisoners. Perhaps that's why, in 1793, a popular revolution occurred with an alliance between the native aboriginal population and the convict prisoner population. Together, they overthrew the harsh penal regime in a relatively peaceful fashion and - no doubt inspired by the ideals of Tom Jefferson, Tom Paine, and Benjamin Franklin - immediately founded the Autarchy of Australis. Since then, Australis has always attracted idealistic refugees from all over the world, all seeking to create their personal utopias within the vast spaces of this welcoming continent. As well as attracting people like me, curious and well-endowed writers, with a sense of adventure.
