Ten Steps Creek | 50 miles away, we encounter Ten Steps Creek, where Mayor Ariel Drew greets us warmly and invites us to attend a town meeting. In the local town hall,
we encounter an event that can only be described as a cross between
a council meeting and the Donahue show. The whole town has turned
out for the meeting - many of the citizens hold placards with well
typeset slogans. . . Soon, Mayor Ariel, is holding forth on stage, using a handheld microphone with an assured technique that Walter Cronkite would envy.
The meeting errupts into applause. This is a meeting big on positive re-inforcement. Later the local butcher
takes the stage:
More applause from the supportive town population. The butcher hangs his head - overcome - and he sobs his thanks. Halfway through an
encore perfornance by the Ten Steps Bulimic Choir, a disgruntled
man in white overalls walks onstage. He identifies himself as an
employee off the local electricty utiility and is holding up what
looks like a large a bill.
There's wild applause
- this seems to be the confession of the night - several of
the townsfolk actually jump on the stage and hug him! The Electralis technician thanks them for their support and for being so understanding. He yells to someone called Larry to "pull the plug". As the hall is blanketed in darkness the people of Tens Steps Creek, once again, break into supportive applause... We're told town meetings in Ten Steps Creek can last months...
