16. Fashion

What all the dirty old men are wearing this yearUNIFORM.—With the modern tendency for all peoples to dress more or less uniformly, national costume is slowly disappearing. Rural men and women display a growing desire to adopt the fashions of their city cousins, that is, to wear the supra - national costume of T - shirts and track - suits.

SKIN - TIGHT.—In Showagong, women wear dresses made of sewn - together fish skin, and the men dangle salami from their belts.

STRINGS ATTACHED.—The Bunkerburra woman is very proud of her apron, whose striped design indicates the suburb to which she belongs. This makes it easier for the fairer sex to pick on “foreigners” as well as for the constabulary to find and return strays.

CLING RAPT.—The people of Mount Gutter still cling to the old ways : mayonnaise is spread between all layers of clothing.

INVASION.—The Men of Farquar don white robes “for personal protection against ectoplasmic invasion”.

TRUNCHEON CRITICS.—Every Thursday night is “Precinct Night” in 6000.
