The Australian Centurion Walkers are the body that controls
ultra
distance walking in Australia and administers the Records component of
this unique sport
The inaugural Australian Distance Track Walking Records were compiled
from
data provided from the Australian Centurion Walkers Record Book, the
Ultra Runners Magazine and other verifiable sources. This initial list
was published in
July 2004.
All new record submissions should be forwarded to: Australian
Centurions Secretary: Tim Erickson, 1 Avoca Crescent, Pascoe Vale,
Victoria, 3044 (terick@melbpc.org.au).
The following must be forwarded along with any claim for a new record:
Official Lap Sheets signed by the Race Director and a copy of your
Birth
Certificate.
Note that only Track performances are eligible for submissions as
records. Road and/or solo performances are ineligible. The Centurions
follow the lead of AURA and define a track event as one held on a
measured and certified circuit of no longer than 500m.
If you are attempting a record, it is wise to advise the Race Director
so that the appropriate measures can be taken, especially in the case
of
50 Miles, 100 Miles, 12 Hours, 24 Hours and 48 Hours. These standards
do
not fall at the exact end of a 400 lam so must be separately measured
and
verified.
Walking is different to running in that a performance must be
scrutinized to ensure that the competitor has indeed walked fairly and
in the commensense notion of what constitutes walking. Hence all record
attempts must have
the prior approval of the Australian Centurion Walkers. This need for
ratification is discussed on the Centurions website. http://home.vicnet.au/~austcent/index.html

Note that, in addition to these ultradistance standards, the
Australian Centurions also maintain ranking lists (Track and Road) for
the 50 Km Walk
for Women. The 50 km for men is an international walking distance
and
hence all performances are registered and ranked. But the 50 km for
women is left out in the cold and performances are not given the
recognition that they deserve.
For the 50 km for women, we recognise both track and road performances
provided, once again,
that the performance can be validated. There have been a number of
women who have racewalked the 50 km distance in Australian racewalking
events such as State Championships, as well as in our own ultra events.
Such performances are prime
candidates for our ranking list. The Australian Masters also recognises
Australian
Masters records for this event. These performances are also eligible
for
inclusion. Hopefully this will further help develop interest in longer
distance
walks amongst our women.
