consumer body, VMIAC
~ the Advocacy Worker, Rod Salvage, was dismissed on 27 March. Rod will be missed by many Melbourne cønsumers. He will litigate to obtain compensation from VMIAC for unfair dismissal.
[NATIONAL] On Saturday, May 2 1998 Australian cønsumers will
join a global Walk, inspired by the United States project "Walk the Walk" on that
day for people whose lives have been touched by mental illness.
However, the Aussie MM March could collapse; this March urgently needs more support and more volunteers to assist with organisation.

[FUTURE EDITIONS] the newsletter will include an update on the ongoing
harrassment of a social worker in NZ who allowed a client to refuse treatment, and a story
about the developing consumer intiatives in Caboolture, Queensland.

[NATIONAL] Anne Deveson is going to run a special on the Science Show on mental illness of Saturday, 11th April at
12.40 pm [ABC radio] The program will be repeated on Monday 13th at 7.10pm. ... mainly about
Schizophrenia because this, of course, is her particular interest. ... I am hoping that it has
a bit of a consumer perspective as well as the 'carer' view. (thanks Merinda for this item)
[NATIONAL] THEMHS is an annual conference for mental health services AND
cønsumers in Aussie land & NZ; THEMHS 1997 was conducted in Sydney during August. There were several cønsumer events, including the AGM of the
Aussie MH Consumer network, and papers
given by Australian cønsumers. THEMHS 1998
will be held at Wrest Point Hotel (yes, near the Casino) in Hobart, Tasmania.
Cønsumer issues to be covered : "the national Cønsumer Network, escaping poverty, mainstreaming,
self-esteem, employment, peer programs, rehabilitation, the Clubhouse model, migrant and indigenous (people).. "
