30 MARCH 2001                   a web newsletter for psych. consumers in Australia

THE LONELY APE
How challenging and tiresome
To be cast down in a world of chaos and confusion
Possessing a more highly evolved perception
Maybe the first ape who carried a digging stick around
Was labelled a nutcase with an attachment disorder
Eventually the other apes worked it out
Even though he was lonely at first
He took pleasure in knowing that he was making
A difference in the world
He shared his secret with anyone who cared to listen
Although many scorned him
He knew in his heart he didn’t have an attachment disorder
And he knew that the other stick carriers knew too
This consoled him greatly
There were times he thought
" Am I crazy?
If God had wanted people to dig with sticks
We would have been born with them
on the ends of our arms "
This is what the Ape authorities said
He didn’t know that his brain was different to theirs
All he knew was that the stick worked for him
And for anyone else who cared to listen and watch him
It took a long time for the other apes to work it out
And lying on his deathbed surrounded by his plump tribe
The Ape said " I have left this legacy to you my tribe
My life has been a strange one
Although the digging stick changed my world forever
In so many ways
It has been hard for me to shake the belief that I’m crazy
Even before the stick, I was different
Imaginative, curious , it was these very qualities
That led me to discover the stick
This made me look at the world differently
If I could discover the stick
What else might there be lying undiscovered
You have only ever known life with the stick
Like those apes who mocked me for so long
Do not be so bold as to believe you know everything
Never question the mind of those that are different
And although you may be more alone, more confused
Always be curious, imaginative and understanding
Of those who fear what they do not experience. "

Across the world, the cønsumer movement is gathering momentum as users of psych. health services recognise their own wisdom and resources. "an aussie cønsumer newsletter" is published by cønsumers for cønsumers Down Under. This Internet newsletter assists cønsumers to keep in touch across Australia and attempt to present their perspective on current events.

The editorial team is based in Melbourne. We publish a new issue every four weeks on Fridays. Printed copies are available by subscription ... ask us.

We are independent of any cønsumer group or service provider. This newsletter is an un-funded enterprise. If you as a cønsumer can help us or suggest improvements, we need you. Watch this space: we collect cønsumer stories and material.
