Since its closure over 40 years ago, the Moe to Walhalla railway has languished in obscurity and neglect. Considered a masterpiece of railway engineering, the most spectacular section of the railway clings to a narrow ledge blasted along the southern side of Stringers Creek Gorge from the Thomson River to Walhalla.

This section of track  has now been reconstructed by the Walhalla Goldfields Railway, a non-profit organisation whose volunteer members have made rapid progress on this impressive project. The railway plans to rebuild the line back to Erica.

All train originate and terminate at  Walhalla. The first  train departs from Walhalla  at  11.00am. Trains operate  on each Wednesday  and every  Saturday ,  Sunday, and public  holidays.

Recent History

The railway was damaged by bushfire in late December 2006 and a bridge was destroyed.  Since then the bridge has  been  rebuilt in new materials and the entire railway line  has  now reopened from Thomson to  Walhalla
