1 The star (112) "He does not speak out of his own fancy. This is an inspired revelation. He is taught by one who is powerful and mighty [Gabriel]. He stood on the uppermost horizon; then, drawing near, he came down within two bows' length or even closer, and revealed to his servant that which he revealed."
2 Hordes (p. 273) "Allah has now revealed the best of scriptures, a book uniform in style proclaiming promises and warnings."
3 That which is coming (109) "I swear by the shelters of the stars...that this is a glorious Koran, inscribed in a hidden book which none may touch except the purified; a revelation from the Lord of all creatures."
Arabic
4 Ornaments of Gold (145) "We have revealed the Qur'an in the Arabic tongue that you may grasp its meaning. It is a transcript of Our eternal book, sublime, and full of wisdom."
The history of the world
Adam and Eve
5 The hordes (p. 271) "He created you from a single being, then from that being he created its mate."
6 The Ranks (165) "Of coarse clay We created them."
7 The Heights (240) has a version of the story of the forbidden fruit. Not only does Allah allow Satan to corrupt humans, he also sets up this temptation in the form of the forbidden tree. The outcome of the fable is a statement from Allah to Adam and Eve: "go hence, and may your descendants be enemies to each other. The earth will for a while provide your sustenance and dwelling-place. There you shall live and there you shall die, and thence you shall be raised to life.'
The Day of Judgement
8 Hordes (276) "The trumpet shall be sounded and all who are in heaven and earth shall fall down fainting, except those that shall be spared by Allah. Then the trumpet will sound again and they shall rise and gaze around them."
9 The Ranks (165) "One blast will sound and they shall see the Resurrection."
10 Smoke (143) "the day the sky shall pour down blinding smoke."
11 That which is coming (108) "When the earth shakes and quivers and the mountains crumble away and scatter abroad into fine dust, you shall be divided into three multitudes: those on the right (blessed shall be those on the right!); those on the left (damned shall be those on the left!); and those to the fore (foremost shall be those!). Such are they that shall be brought near to their Lord in the gardens of delight: a whole multitude from the men of old, but only a few from the later generations."
12 The Heights (239) "On that day their deeds shall be weighed with justice. Those whose scales are heavy shall triumph, but those whose scales are light shall lose their souls, because they have denied Our revelations."
13 The disaster (29) "Then he whose scales are heavy shall dwell in bliss; but he whose scales are light, the Abyss shall be his home."
When will it be?
14 Counsel (152) "And who can tell? The Hour of Doom may be fast approaching."
15 The Star (114) "That which is coming is near at hand; none but Allah can disclose its hour."
On gods having sons
16 The hordes (p. 271) "Had it been his will to take a son, he would have chosen whom he pleased out of his own creation. But Allah forbid! He is Allah, the One, the Almighty."
17 The hordes "No soul shall bear another's burden"
18 Ornaments (148) "Jesus was no more than a mortal whom We favoured and made an example to the Israelites. Had it been Our will We could have replaced you with angels to succeed you on the earth. He is a portent of the Hour of Doom. Have no doubt about its coming and follow Me....And when Jesus worked his miracles, he said 'I have come to give you wisdom and to make plain to you some of that concerning which they are at variance. Fear Allah and follow me. Allah is my Lord and your Lord: therefore serve Him."19 Ornaments "If the Lord of Mercy had a son, I would be the first to worship him.'
Jesus: man or god?
20 Women (371) "The Messiah, Jesus the son of Mary, was no more than Allah's apostle and His Word which He cast to Mary; a spirit from Him. So believe in Allah and His apostles and do not say: 'Three'. Forbear, and it shall be better for you. Allah is but one God. Allah forbid that He should have a son!"
Arab pagans and the children of gods
21 Ornaments (146) "Yet they assign to Him offspring from among His servants! Surely man is monstrously ungrateful. Would Allah choose daughters for himself and sons for you?"
22 The Ranks (169) "ask the unbelievers if it be true that Allah has daughters, while they themselves choose sons. Did We create the angels females? And were they present at their creation? Surely they lie when they declare 'Allah has begotten children.' Would he choose daughters instead of sons? What has come over you that you should judge so ill?"
23 The star (113) "Have you thought on Al-Lat and Al-Uzzah, and Manat the third other? [These three were pagan goddesses, ascribed as daughters of Allah] Is He to have daughters and you sons? This is indeed an unfair distinction! They are but names which you and your fathers have invented; Allah has vested no authority in them."
24 Women (367) "The pagans pray to females; they pray to a rebellious Satan. But Allah has laid His curse on Satan, for he had said 'I shall entice a number of Your servants and lead them astray. I shall arouse in them vain desires and order them to slit the ears of cattle."
Angels
25 Hordes (277) "You shall see the angels circling round the throne, giving glory to their lord."
26 Counsel (150) "…the angels give glory to their Lord and beg forgiveness for those on earth."
27 The star (113) "Numerous are the angels in the heavens; yet their intercession shall avail nothing until Allah gives leave to whom He accepts and chooses."
28 Pilgrimage (390) "Whenever in their anguish, they try to escape from Hell, the angels will drag them back, saying: "Taste the torment of Hell-fire!'"
29 The Winds (116) "By the angels who deal out blessings to all men…"
Satan
30 The Heights "We created you and gave you form. Then We said to the angels, ‘Prostrate yourselves before Adam'. They all prostrated themselves except Satan, who refused. ‘Why did you not prostrate yourself?' Allah asked. ‘I am nobler than Adam,' he replied. ‘You created me of fire and him of clay.'
"He said ‘Begone from Paradise! This is no place for your contemptuous pride. Away with you! Henceforth you shall be humble.' Satan replied ‘Reprieve me till the Day of Resurrection.' ‘You are reprieved' said He. ‘Because you have led me into sin, I will waylay your servants as they walk on Your straight path and spring upon them from the front and from the rear, from their right and from their left. Then you shall find the greater part of them unfaithful.' ‘Begone!' said Allah ‘A despicable outcast you shall henceforth be. With those that follow you I shall fill the pit of Hell.'
31 "Never have we sent a single prophet or apostle before you with whose wishes Satan did not tamper. But Allah abrogates the interjections of Satan and confirms His own revelations. Allah is wise and all-knowing. He makes Satan's interjections a temptation for those whose hearts are diseased or hardened…"
32 Ornaments of gold (147) "He that does not heed the warning of the Merciful shall have a devil for his companion (devils may turn men away from the right path, though they may think themselves rightly guided). And when he comes before Us, he shall say: ‘Would that we were as far apart as the east is from the west.' Truly, Satan is an evil companion."
Hell
33 Ornaments (149) "Malek, they will call out ‘Let your Lord make an end of us!' But he will answer: ‘Here you shall remain!'
34 The Ranks (166) "Is this not a better welcome than the Zaqqum-tree? We have made this tree a scourge for the wrongdoers. It grows in the nethermost part of Hell, bearing fruit like devils' heads: on it they shall feed, and with it they shall cram their bellies, together with draughts of scalding water. Then to Hell they shall return."
Recorders: of individual lives
35 Cataclysm, (16) "there are guardians watching over you, noble recorders who know of all your actions."
36 Thunder (140) "Each has his guardian angels before him and behind him, who watch him by Allah's command."
37 Pilgrimage (393) "Are you not aware that Allah has knowledge of what heaven and earth contain? All is recorded in His Book."
38 Ornaments (149) "Do they think We cannot hear their secret talk and private converse? Yes! Our angels, who are at their side, record it all."
39 Ya Sin (170) "We record the deeds of men and the marks they leave behind: We note all things in a glorious book."
Recorders of entire nations
40 Kneeling (129) "You shall see each nation on their knees. Each nation shall be summoned to its book and a voice will say to them ‘You shall this day be rewarded for your deeds. This book of Ours speaks with truth against you. We have recorded all your actions."
Jinn
41 The Winds (118) "I created mankind and the jinn in order that they might worship Me. I demand no livelihood of them, nor do I ask that they should feed me."
42 The Merciful (20) "They shall dwell with bashful virgins whom neither man nor jinnee will have touched before them…Dark-eyed virgins sheltered in their tents, whom neither man nor jinnee will have touched before them."
The messengers/prophets
43 Counsel (154) "It is not vouchsafed to any mortal that Allah should speak to him except by revelation, or from behind a veil, or through a messenger sent and authorised by Him to make known His will."
44 Counsel (154) "Thus We have inspired you with a spirit of Our will when you knew nothing of faith or scripture, and made it a light whereby We guide those of Our servants whom We please."
45 Pilgrimage (394) "He chooses His messengers from the angels and from men."
46 The Heights (244) "Long ago, We sent forth Noah to his people… ‘Do you think it strange that a warning should come to you from your Lord through a mortal like yourselves, and that He should exhort you to guard ourselves against evil so that Allah may show you mercy?'
Scriptures
47 Kneeling (128) "We gave the Scriptures to the Israelites and bestowed on them wisdom and prophethood. We provided them with good things and exalted them above the nations. We gave them plain commandments; yet it was not till knowledge had been vouchsafed them that they disagreed among themselves from evil motives."
48 Thunder (143) "We have sent forth other apostles before you and given them wives and children."
"Yet none of them could work miracles except by the will of Allah."
49 Thunder (143) "They say ‘You are no true apostle.'"
"Allah is our all-sufficient witness, and those too who know the Scriptures."
"I have no proof, except the truth of my message."
"Other apostles were mocked before you."
50 The Mountain (115) "Do they say ‘He is a poet: we are waiting for some misfortune to befall him'? Say: ‘Wait if you will; I too am waiting.'…Do they say: ‘He has invented it himself'? Indeed they have no faith. Let them produce a scripture like it, if what they say be true."
51 The Winds (118) "Thus whenever an apostle came to those that flourished before them (the Meccans) they cried: ‘Sorceror!' or ‘Madman!' Have they handed down this cry from one generation to the next?"
52 Smoke (144) "But how will their new faith help them, when an undoubted prophet had come to them and they denied him, saying ‘A madman taught by others.'"
53 Ornaments of Gold (145) "Many a prophet did We sent forth to the ancients: but they scoffed at each prophet that arose amongst them. We utterly destroyed them, though they were mightier than these (Meccans)".
54 The Ranks (166) "Are we then to renounce our gods for sake of a mad poet?"
55 Ya Sin (170) "They said ‘We have been sent to you by ‘Allah'. But the people replied: ‘You are mortals like ourselves. The Merciful has revealed nothing. You are surely lying."
Allah's role in this world
56 Sovereignty (72) "He created life and death that He might put you to the proof and find out which of you would acquit himself best."
57 Sovereignty "You sometimes see the earth dry and barren; but no sooner do we send down rain upon it than it begins to stir and swell, putting forth every kind of radiant bloom. That is because Allah is Truth: He gives life to the dead and has power over all things."
58 Sovereignty "He gives life to the dead. Those who are in the grave, Allah will raise to life."
59 The Heights (244) "He sends forth the winds as harbingers of His mercy, and when they have gathered up a heavy cloud, He drives it on to some dead land and lets the rain fall upon it, bringing forth all manner of fruit. Thus He will raise the dead to life."
60 Thunder (139) "Allah is the Creator of all things. He sends down water from the sky…"
61 Ornaments of Gold (146) "It is he…who sends down water from the sky in due measure and thereby quickens the dead land (even thus you shall be raised to life)."
62 The Heights (244) "Good soil yields fruit by Allah's will. But poor and scant are the fruits which spring from barren soil."
Allah and the comforts of human life
Ships
63 The Heights "He has given you ships which sail the sea at his bidding."
64 Kneeling (128) "It is Allah who has subdued to you the ocean, so that ships may sail upon it at his bidding; so that you may seek his bounty and render thanks to Him."
65 Kneeling "He has subjected to you what the heavens and the earth contain; all is from Him."
66 Counsel (153) "And among his signs are the ships which sail like banners upon the ocean. If He will, He calms the wind so that they lie motionless upon its bosom (surely there are signs in this for steadfast men who render thanks); or causes them to founder as a punishment for their misdeeds."
67 Thunder (139) "It is He who makes the lightning flash upon you. He gathers up the heavy clouds. He hurls his thunderbolts at whom he pleases."
68 Kneeling (129) "It is Allah who gives you life and later causes you to die."
Roads
69 Ornaments of gold (146) "It is He who has made the earth a resting-place for you and traced out routes upon it that you may find your way."
The social order
70 Ornaments of gold (147) "It is We who deal out to them their livelihoods in this world, exalting some in rank above others, so that the one may take the other into his service."
Into what religion will you be born?
71 Ornaments of gold (147) "Had it been Allah's will, He could have made them all of one religion. But Allah brings whom He will into his mercy, the wrongdoers have none to befriend or help them."
Will your children be girls or boys?
72 Counsel (154) "He gives daughters to whom He will and sons to whom He pleases. To some He gives both sons and daughters, and to others he gives none at all. Mighty is Allah and all-knowing."
On domesticated animals
73 Pilgrimage (391) "We have subjected them to your service, so that you may give thanks…He has subjected them to your service, so that you may give glory to him for guiding you."
74 Ornaments of Gold (146) "It is He who has created all living things in pairs and made for you the ships and beasts on which you ride, so that, as you mount upon their back, you may recall the goodness of your Lord and say ‘Glory to Him who has subjected these to us. But for Him we could not be their masters."
75 Counsel (151) "Creator of the heavens and the earth, He has given you…cattle, male and female."
76 Ya Sin (173) "Do they not see how among the things our hands have made, We have created for them the beasts of which they are masters? We have subjected these to them, that they may ride on some and eat the flesh of others; they drink their milk and put them to other uses."
Responsibility for one's actions
Yes
77 The Winds (116) "None but the perverse turn away from the true faith. Cursed are the liars who dwell in darkness and are heedless of the life to come."
78 The hordes (p. 271) "He does not guide the untruthful disbeliever."
79 The hordes (p. 271) "Such is Allah's guidance: he bestows it on whom He will. But he whom Allah misleads shall have none to guide him."
80 Kneeling (128) "He that does what is right does it to his own advantage; and he that commits evil does so at his own peril."

82 Man (p. 19) "This is indeed an admonition. Let him that will, take the right path to his Lord. Yet you cannot will except by the will of Allah. Allah is wise and all-knowing."
83 Counsel (154) "He whom Allah leads astray shall be lost indeed."
84 Women (364) "Would you guide those whom Allah has caused to err? He whom Allah has led astray cannot be guided."
85 Kneeling (128) "Who, besides Allah, can guide the man who makes his lust his god, the man whom Allah deliberately misleads, setting a seal upon his ears and heart and drawing a veil over his eyes? Will you not take heed?"
86 Thunder (142) "Allah leaves in error whom He will, and guides those who repent and have faith."

90 The Ranks (166) "As for the true servants of Allah, a generous provision shall be made for them: they shall feast on fruit and be honoured in the gardens of delight. Reclining face to face upon soft couches, they shall be served with a goblet filled at a gushing fountain. Their drink shall neither dull their senses nor befuddle them. And by their side shall sit bashful, dark-eyed virgins, as chaste as the sheltered eggs of ostriches."
91 Women (360-1) "As for those that have faith and do good works, We shall admit them to gardens watered by running streams, where, wedded to chaste virgins, they shall abide forever. We shall admit them to a cool shade."
92 That which is coming (108) "They shall recline on jewelled couches face to face, and there shall wait on them immortal youths with bowls and ewers and a cup of purest wine (that will neither pain their heads nor take away their reason); with fruits of their own choice and flesh of fowls that they relish. And theirs shall be the dark-eyed houris, chaste as hidden pearls: a guerdon for their deeds… We created the houris and made them virgins, loving companions of those on the right hand: a multitude from the men of old and a multitude from the later generations."
93 Ornaments (149) "Enter Paradise, you and your spouses, in all delight. You shall be served with golden dishes and golden cups. Abiding there forever…"
Man's authority over women

95 Women (358) "Men have authority over women because Allah has made the one superior to the other; and because they spend their wealth to maintain them. Good women are obedient. They guard their unseen parts because Allah has guarded them. As for those from whom you fear disobedience, admonish them and send them to their beds and beat them. Then, if they obey you, take no further action against them. Allah is high, supreme."

These shall have a blissful end."

107 The Winds (117) "The righteous shall dwell amidst gardens and fountains, and shall receive what their Lord will give them. For they have done good works, sleeping but little in the night-time, praying at dawn for Allah's pardon, and sharing their goods with the beggars and the destitute."

109 Women (358-9) "Show kindness to your parents and your kindred, to the orphans and to the needy, to your near and distant neighbours, to your fellow-travellers, to the wayfarers, and to the slaves whom you own. Their cities lie in ruin; desolate are their lofty palaces, and abandoned their wells….I bore long with many nations; then in their sinfulness My vengeance smote them."
