Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster

As atheists we do not want or need to believe in any supernatural beings. However in order to gain the respect of the religious communities it can be argued that we should at least make some effort, as they do, to try to let faith overcome our common sense.

If we want to do this then it would seem that the best god we could choose would be the Flying Spaghetti Monster. This god is equally as plausible as any other god, but unlike others it has a socially useful purpose. The followers of this god are called Pastafarians. When Intelligent Design proponents want to get equal time with Evolution, Pastafarians demand that they also should get equal time with their belief in Unintelligent Design.

Detractors might say that this is not a real religion, that it is only satire. However this is serious satire and deserves respect. It is definitely a religion because the Flying Spaghetti Monster is obviously supernatural. How else, for example, could it fly?

One of the doctrines of Pastafarianism is based on statistical evidence. This is that over the last century, the number of pirates on the high seas has declined, just as the planet has warmed. Therefore the solution to global warming is to have more pirates. This belief is just as plausible as the beliefs of many other religions, but unlike others, it is based on an observed statistical correlation. It therefore has a more solid foundation than the beliefs of other religions.

This religion deserves respect and so atheists should accord it that respect. We may have our doubts, but we can at least try to believe it. That is all that most believers in other religions do anyway.
