Thai Culture and Food Festival Melbourne

Sunday April 9 2006 –Songkran สงกรานต์ ๒๕๔๙

3rd annual event at

This 3rd annual event is organised by the Thai Culture and Food Festival Inc. (ABN 94093924030) with the support of The Thai Association of Victoria, the Australia Thailand Association, the Thai Restaurants Association, the Thai Students Association of Victoria and the Australia Thailand Business Council - Victoria.

The 2nd annual festival in Melbourne on Sunday April 3 2005 attracted over 40,000 visitors to Federation Square and the riverbank food stalls.

Overall objectives

To provide a celebration of Thai culture and Food coinciding with the traditional Thai Songkran Water Festival as a major new event in the Melbourne calendar. Filling a natural gap after the Chinese New Year, Grand Prix, Moomba, and Easter break, the 3rd Annual festival is scheduled for Sunday April 9 2006, at Federation Square,  with a  celebration of Thai Food, Art, Music, Film, Dance, Muay Thai Boxing, Crafts and Fashion. Starting at 10am the event will finish with a spectacular "Bangkok by Nite" celebration alongside the River Yarra closing at 9pm.

With support from the Tourism Authority of Thailand, Thai Airways, the Thai community, and local businesses the event is one of Melbourne's major annual events.  It is expected that Thai Television Channel 5 will be in Melbourne and to broadcast aspects of the event to over 135 countries, featuring not only the Festival but also Melbourne and Victoria.

It will also provide a unique opportunity for Australian businesses operating in or associated with Thailand to become associated through sponsorship and/or service provision.

With a growing Thai community in Melbourne, including thousands of Thai students, over 250 Thai  restaurants and the close relationship that Thailand and Australia have, through travel, trade , education and defence, this event will enable the communities to celebrate the traditional Songkran festival, as well as learning more about Thai culture and Food.
