Background to the Award

The Australian Science Fiction Foundation is proud to institute the inaugural Norma K Hemming Award 2010 to commemorate Norma Kathleen Hemming, a pioneer Australian feminist author active in the 1950s. The award will be given to mark excellence in the exploration of themes of race, gender, class and sexuality in the form of science fiction and fantasy or related artwork or media; produced either in Australia or by Australian citizens; and which is first published, released or presented in the calendar year preceding the year in which the award is presented

Terms and Conditions of Entry

  1. These terms and conditions form part of the award criteria. By entering the competition, entrants accept the conditions of entry as prescribed.

  2. Entry is open to all Australian residents and citizens.

  3. Each entrant may submit as many entries as they choose.

  4. There are no restrictions on story, poem, book or script length.

  5. Entry is free.

  6. Entries close at close of business (Eastern Standard Time) on 31 July 2010. Entries received after that date will not be considered. No responsibility will be taken for lost or late entries.

  7. Eligible material includes stories, poetry, stage plays, scripts, artwork or film that display excellence in the exploration of themes of race, gender, class and sexuality in the form of science fiction and fantasy or related artwork or media; produced either in Australia or by Australian citizens.

  8. The material entered for the award must be published or released in Australia or by Australian citizens during calendar year 2009. If a body of work extends over several years, only the part published or released in the period of the calendar year 2009 is eligible.

  9. Unpublished works are ineligible.

  10. The author or artist responsible for the winning entry shall be notified by email or post in the final week of August 2010.

  11. The inaugural Norma K Hemming Award will be presented at Aussiecon 4 (the 68th World Science Fiction Convention in Melbourne on 2–6 September 2010). A press release announcing the winner will be issued after the presentation ceremony.

  12. Citation and trophy: the physical award will be in the form of a citation and trophy. The trophy will consist of a plate designed by Western Australian graphics designer Sarah Xu, with an accompanying crystal plinth inscribed with presentation details and the winner’s name. Whether there will be highly commended works or runners-up, in addition to announcement of the winner at Aussiecon 4, will be determined by the jurors.

  13. Jurors for the award: jurors for selection of the first recipient (2010 winner) of the Norma K Hemming Award will be: writer/editor, Russell Blackford; editor/publisher, Sarah Endacott; editor/publisher, Rob Gerrand; and author, Tess Williams.

  14. By entering this competition, entrants consent to having the title and description of their work, including author details, reproduced for the purposes of announcing the award, and distributed for educational and promotional purposes.

  15. Entries must be submitted via a completed application form, including signed acknowledgment of the entrant’s agreement to the terms and conditions, or the agreement of their parent/guardian, if they are under 18 years of age.

  16. All submitted work (including artwork, photography and other non-text material) must be original work and all entrants must agree that their entries do not contain any material that infringes the rights of another artist or person. Artworks may be produced by person other than the author/artist, providing the authorship credit is clearly indicated on the application form.

  17. The award committee reserves the right not to offer an award if, in its reasonable opinion, no entry is received that is of an acceptable standard to warrant award.

  18. The decision of the judges, in relation to any aspect of the competition, is final and binding. No correspondence will be entered into.
