Veteran Spanish director (writer and choreographer) Carlos Saura has a magical way with musicals on film. In "Carmen" (1983), "El Amor Brujo - A Love Bewitched" (1985) and "Flamenco" (1995) Saura subtly wove music, dance and drama into a fascinating and passionate whole, one that drew his audience into the film rather than leaving them as spectators. In his latest film, "Tango", Saura dazzles with dance, music and love whilst raising questions about artistic integrity, film as a medium, politics and the fragile and shifting border between memories, dreams, desire.
Forty year old Mario Suarez (Miguel Angel Sola), desperate to forget the breakup of his marriage, seeks to lose himself in his work as a film director. He is creating a film about the Tango and his financial backer, Angelo Larocca (Juan Luis Galiardo), insists that his young lover Elena (Mia Maestro) have a leading role in the film. As the film evolves, interweaving Mario's personal history and memories... with those of his country, Mario and Elena become involved in a passionate love affair that risks both their personal happiness and the success of the film.
Renowned Italian cinematographer Vittorio Storaro, creates a wonderful pallet of colour to highlight the emotion of the moment. The cast includes actors and professional Argentinian tango dancers and musicians. The music is in the capable hands of Argentinian Lalo Schifrin who, besides having directed the grand finale of the World Soccer Cup in Rome with the Three Tenors, has a long list of Hollywood films to his credit, from "Cool Hand Luke" and "Bullitt" to "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective" and "Mission: Impossible".
"Tango" draws you into its world to experience its passion, struggle with the issues it raises, and thrill to the dancing. It is a rare treat - don't miss it.
