This week* the This Is Not Art Festival has just wound up in the New South Wales city of Newcastle. It used to be Steel-town, now it's Arts Ville* we check out how the festival went. And new training opportunities in the film industry in Queensland as TAFE courses compliment the more familiar film school subjects. Our guest is Perth-based artist Dave Carson. His exhibition, SkyLab, celebrates the place that the pioneering US space station has in the cultural mythology of Western Australia, its last resting place. And Nina Marie will be talking to MICHAEL BODEY about his new book Aussiewood*. Which is about the Australian siege on Hollywood* cowritten with MICHAELA BOLAND. Six years later* and five extra festivals have clustered together with the writers festival to form the This Is Not Art Festival* or TINA. As an interesting side note* TINA was once the slogan of British Prime Minister* MARGARET THATCHER* except she meant "There Is No Alternative to doing things my way*These festivals include The National Student Media Conference* the electronic music festival called Sound Summit* Electrofringe * which looks into the world of digital art* Critical Animals* where Post Graduate students can get together and have an intellectual natter* and the Environment Awareness Raising Festival* which joins TINA for the first time this year. The festival ran from September 30 until October the 4th * so I spoke with JESSICA* the Logistics Co-ordinator of the Festival to find out what this years highlights were. In the past* film industry schools taught things like cinematography* sound recording* direction* or writing * But if set construction* make up* or wardrobe was your thing* then you had to get a job as a gofer and learn any way you could. But a new initiative by the Queensland Government and the Pacific Film and Television Commission has opened up the prospect of professional training in a wide range of craft skills that are essential to film and television. They've expanded an Internship Scheme at Moreton TAFE to include costume design* camera* lighting* accounting*and makeup and a 12 week work attachment.
