Our guest this week is Robyn Sloggett, director of the Centre for Cultural materials Conservation at the University of Melbourne. Robyn’s forensic skills in detecting forgery made her an expert witness in a recent case of art fraud. But first the week’s news… Sting 1…News (5 min) Sting 2. On Tuesday 4 November, in the once gold mining town of Uralla on the New England highway between Tamworth and Armidale in NSW, the citizens met to plan the preservation of one of the earliest industrial sites in the town… the former workshop of the New England Brass and Iron Foundry. Paul Hobbs of the Uralla Visitor’s Centre was there and I spoke to him the morning after the meeting… Item 1: Paul Hobbs Uralla (4.55) First words: A good number of people turned up… Last words: …and it’ll get here. And of course they are interested in money as well. It is easy to forget that foundries, along with brick-making and ship-building were important parts of Australia’s industrial culture from the earliest days of European settlement. Back in March we spoke to Phillip Mitchell, the Artistic Director of the Spare Parts Puppet Theatre in Perth about the 20th UniMA Congress & World Puppetry Festival scheduled for April 2008 and their ambitious plans to collect one million puppets in the Perth Concert Hall. With only four months to go, I caught up with the Million Puppets Project manager, Katherine McLean, while she was visiting Melbourne’s Brunswick Street and asked her if they were on track to the million puppet mark… Item 2: Katherine McLean (5.30) First words: Well… Last words: ….which I think is just gorgeous Million Puppets Project Manager, Katherine McLean… and the 20th UniMA conference and World Puppetry Festival is in Perth from 2 April to 12 April, and the puppetry count for the Guinness world record will be at the Perth Concert Hall on Carnival Day 6 April. The festival was initiated by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust so I spoke to Kevin McMahon, President and CEO of the Trust, but first asked about the transformation of Pittsburgh from steel city to city of the arts… and the role of the trust in that transformation… Item 5: Kevin McMahon -Pittsburgh (9.35) First words: The Trust was … Last words: ...put us directly in touch.” Kevin McMahon, of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust… and that sounded like an invitation to Pittsburgh… so go for it.
