This week, while much attention focuses on Melbourne for the Melbourne International Festival of the Arts, in Sydney the city council is getting the visual arts out of the palaces of high culture-the art
galleries- and onto the streets for the sixth annual Art & About festival¡K and in Perth¡K audiences are about to enjoy  A Royal Appointment - Two Old Queens  who are strutting their stuff on stage¡K and from Hobart the story of an extraordinarily successful campaign to draw audiences to Beyond the Neck, a new play by a largely unknown
Tasmanian writer, on a controversial subject.   Our guests are Pat Rix,

A few sounds from the opening night of the Melbourne International Festival of the Arts in Federation Square.  While much attention focuses on that Festival this month, the Sydney City Council is getting the visual arts out of the palaces of high culture and onto the streets for the sixth annual Art and About festival.  I asked Gil Minervini, the Creative Director, Events, for the council what would we encounter if we got Art & About in Sydney this month¡K.

Over in Perth, actor, publicist and producer, John Michael Swinbank has been having an affair with the mythos of the English actor Noel Coward, for several decades, playing him on stage a number of times.  Now he and Edgar Metcalfe have combined to present A Royal Appointment -Two Old Queens to Perth audiences.  I spoke to John Michael about his fascination with actor, playwright and composer, Noel Coward¡K

John Michael Swinbank who with Edgar Metcalfe present A Royal Appointment - Two Old Queens at the Blue Room Studio in Perth from October 12 for four week, then at the Little Theatre in Adelaide for two week in early November. We scour many sources looking for stories for this program, and one is a web site called fuel4arts¡K supported by the Australia Council and mainly devoted to resources and ideas to promote the arts¡K There we found the story of Annette Downs, Hobart-based producer with TASMANIA PERFORMS¡K and her extraordinarily successful campaign to draw audiences to a new play by a largely unknown Tasmanian writer, on a controversial subject.  The approach she employed is sometimes termed viral marketing¡K but the basic elements as old as gossip¡K simple word of mouth.  I asked Annette what was the biggest asset she had to sell the season of Beyond the Neck¡K
