A preview of Experimenta the International Biennial of Media Arts that opened in Melbourne on August 25* and the extraordinary story Robert Chisholm, a forgotten Australian singer with an international career on stage and in Hollywood. Our guest is New Zealand film maker, Shirley Horrocks who specialisesin films about the arts and artists. Her documentary Marti: the passionate eye, the life and work of New Zealand photographer Marti Friedlander has just been invited to an arts documentary festival in Berlin. The meeting issued a communique setting out eighteen principles that should underlie the teaching of literature, and twelve instrumental recommendations. Some like Nellie Melba, Joan Sutherland or Robert Heplmann are almost household names while others are near forgotten. Historian and archivist Frank Van Straten has just spent several years rediscovering an Australian singer, Robert Chisholm, who trod the boards with the likes of Gladys Moncrieff, Katharine Hepburn, and Jeannette Macdonald* and sang the music of Kurt Weill, Rodgers and Hart, Ira Gershwin and Leonard Bernstein* but died in obscurity in Melbourne in 1960.
