Our guest is New Zealand photographer, Frank Habicht, whose work spans the decades from London and Europe in the Swinging 60s, to the dramatic and romantic landscapes of the Bay of Islands in the North of New Zealand, where the foundations of modern New Zealand were laid with the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840. But first a round up of the news* STING NEWS: ( 5.00) Ends approx. 6.40 It has been standard practice for years for supermarket to charge manufactures shelf rentals to display their products in the aisles. Now it seems that the Angus and Robertson chain of book shops is getting into the act. It has written to publishers to say that A&R plans to levy a fee ranging from $1,500 to over $45,000 on publishers for access to the companies shelves and, hence its customer. Now the retailer normally gets up to 50% of the recommended retail price of books, so I asked the CEO of the Australian Publishers Association, Maree McCaskill, whether this profit oriented strategy was the result of widespread price discounting* Item 1: APA / Maree McCaskill (4.51) First words: Probably* Last words: *that also supplies the domestic needs of Australia;. Maree McCaskill, the CEO of the Australian Publishers Association. An interesting development for the firm that, to quote their website, .played a central role in the development of uniquely Australian literature and published many classics by authors including Banjo Patterson, Henry Lawson, May Gibbs, Norman Lindsay and CJ Dennis・. It sounds like its time for readers to mobilise: pop into your local A&R-owned bookshop and tell the manager if you support this policy or not. I came across an interesting community oriented foundation the other day. It is called the Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal, and its programs support a diversity of social and cultural initiatives.
