Hi I・m VINCENT O・DONNELL* And welcome to Arts Alive * Australian arts and culture current affairs* On this week・s program*  Regional Arts Australian and the pay-TV channel Ovation join forced to produce a monthly arts program called Heartland*  The ATOM awards are 25 this year and are seeking to contact past winners* and questions are raised about the new National Indigenous TV network and the existing Indigenous Community TV service.  Our guest is Caroline Butler-Bowdon, co-author of a book Homes in the Sky, Apartment living in Australian* and curator of a a spin-off exhibition, Homes in the Sky, at the Museum of Sydney. Regional Arts Australia and the arts oriented pay-TV channel, Ovation have collaborated to produce a monthly, one hour magazine-style program to feature arts and culture in rural and regional Australia.  

The Program titled Heartland, went to air for the first time at 8pm eastern time on 2nd August, and will be repeated at various times of day over the next month.  For more of the background on this venture into the mass media, I spoke to Ken Lloyd, chief executive of Country Arts SA, and national secretary for Regional Arts Australia*

Ken Lloyd, chief executive of Country Arts SA, and national secretary for Regional Arts Australia* Heartland will be produced monthly and will air on Ovation* which can be seen on AUSTAR, FOXTEL, Optus and SelecTV.  And if you are sure your local arts event is more than worth of the attention of Heartland, the Regional Arts Australia would like you to convince your state based regional arts organisation to put the project up to them.

The annual awards organised by the Australian Teachers of Media turn twenty-five this year and are wanting to contact as many of the winners from the past quarter century as before.  I spoke to the awards co-ordinator Amber Nelson, but first asked about the scope of the awards.

The recent announcement that the Commonwealth government would bankroll for four years the establishment of a National Indigenous TV network was generally well received.  However, some criticisms have arisen that the government had not recognised the value of the existing Indigenous Community TV service and that NITV was a Sydney-Canberra solution to a challenge that the Indigenous communities in the bush had solved in a very different way.  This view was put in an open letter to Senator Helen Coonan, by Perth based film maker and media worker, Frank Rijavec.  I first asked him whether the minister replied to his open letter of 12 July*

But the presence on the board of NITV of individuals involved in Indigenous Community TV should ensure that there is space for both models of television on the new national service, and the value of video as a means of social communications and community building won・t be overlooked, in the business of mass media TV.
