Hi I・m VINCENT O・DONNELL* And welcome to Arts Alive * Australian arts and culture current affairs radio* this week a bit of a variation in format* I am in Singapore for the last week of the Singapore Arts festival, so there is no news*

However* Stranger things have happened before* the Beatles have become the subject of academic curiosity.  We hear from rock music academic Tony Mitchell who has been retracing their steps in Hamburg Germany and has also investigated the impact of the Pretty Things on New Zealand in the mid 1960s...

And we have two guests* the first is Benjamin Armstrong, an emerging artist who is the recipient of an endowment from the management consultants, Maddocks, that will enable him to visit the Venice Biennale later this year.  

The second is Geoff Overheu (Over hoi) a fourth generation farmer from Gingin in Western Australia* turned artist*  who is making quite a reputation for leading us to see rural  life and landscapes through different eyes.*  But first some music*from Fiona Boyes recorded live at the Pt Fairey Folk festival

There seems renewed interest, this time among academics in the influence of the 1960s on present day popular culture.  Tony Mitchell lectures at UTS in Sydney and a couple of years ago we hear his tribute to the early rock scene in Christchurch on this program. Tony has just returned from Hamburg in Germany where he has* in a sense* been walking in the footsteps of the Beatles, so I asked him whether the Beatles had now become the subject of academic curiosity*

I spoke to him after the opening of an exhibition of his works in Melbourne* and asked what interested him in leading us to see rural life and landscapes through different eyes*
