This week we revisit the interview I did with Roy Smiles, the author of Ying Tong: A Walk with the Goons. The Impressionist show is attracting large audiences, and the discovery of secret messages scratched into the surface of one of the painting on exhibition will surely swell attendance even further. The conservator responsible for the discovery, Michael Varcoe-Cocks takes up the story* Item 2a: Michael Varco-Cocks (1.50) Starts with: ¡§ Ends with: *..¡¨ Here Michael Varcoe-Cocks pointed to an X-ray image of the painting, a rural landscape of trees and a creek. It revealed that the figure of a near naked woman, with her back discreetly towards us, had been painted over by the artist Arthur Streeton. Florry was the younger sister of Lucy Walker who had attended the National Arts School in the 1880s with Tom Roberts. The Walker family was well to do. Perhaps a 22 year old artist was not seen as a suitable partner for young Florence because the romance went no further, and when they each did marry it was much later in life. But there was one more surprise. Item 2c: Michael Varco-Cocks (0.17) Starts with: ¡§ Ends with: *..¡¨ And so this previously unknown painting by Streeton was unveiled to the public by his grandson, Oliver Streeton. Item 2: Oliver Streeton (1.09) Starts with: ¡§ Ends with: *..first great disappointment¡¨ Oliver Streeton, unveiling a previously unknown painting by his grandfather, Arthur Streeton, and speculating about Arthur¡¦s friendship with the young Florence Walker, to whom he gave the painting.. And before that, Michael Varco-Cocks, a conservator at the NGV. His detective work found the hidden inscriptions in the painting, Spring, by Arthur Streeton, that led to this intriguing story. And the Impressionist exhibition is on at the NGV at Federation Square until 8 July, and regrettable, the present collection will not be seen elsewhere. The Australian Library and Information Association has just released its most recent survey of Internet Filtering in Public Libraries. While welcoming recent statements by the Prime Minister on the role of parental responsibility in ensuring safe access to the internet, the report warns that a one-size-fits-all solution for internet filtering could actively compromise legitimate research.
