It・s off a new CD called Nella Fantasia CD from Pot Pourri,* and Pot Pourri is another project from this week・s guest, Tania de Jong. Many years ago, Minto was a rural village a few kilometres on the Sydney side of Campbelltown. As Sydney・s urban sprawl reached out along the Hume Highway, Minto was selected as the site of a government housing project where families, displaced by inner city slum clearance, were moved* often with little care for the disruption of their former social networks. Against the odds, a community grew up, and endured, but again faces disruption. Inspired perhaps by those Joanie Mitchell lyrics* You don・t know what your・ve got .till it・s gone* the people of the Minto estate have documented their lives and their community in a book and a website* Remembering Minto. For help with the project they turned to the Information and Cultural Exchange* know as ICE* based in Sydney・s Granville. Now ICE is better known for working with youth, electronics, hip-hop and the likes of Mayer Jupiter and MC Tray, so I asked Lena Nalhous the director of ICE why Minto came to a youth organisation* Item 5: Remembering Minto (8. ) First words: *A lot of people* Last words: ....and also read them. Lena Nalhous, the director of ICE who has been part of the Remembering Minto project since the beginning*And while the NSW Dept. of Housing and its interstate equivalents are often cast in the role of the bad guys, the Remembering Minto project was largely funded by the NSW Dept * and seems to have led to more consultative management practices and better engage with community culture, history and values* ARTS ALIVE is a production of the INDEPENDENT MEDIA FOUNDATION INC. We receive financial support from the COMMUNITY BROADCASTING FOUNDATION ... and the assistance of VICNET and the SCHOOL OF APPLIED COMMUNICATION at RMIT University. The program is heard on the COMMUNITY RADIO NETWORK, on the SBS DIGITAL RADIO SERVICE, and is distributed by THE ABORIGINAL PROGRAM EXCHANGE. And the spoken word content from the past four programs is available as audio on demand at www.artsaliveradio.com I・m Vincent O・Donnell and we leave you with some Gilbert & Sullivan. On the second night of the Melbourne season of the Pirates of Penzance, Reg Livermore suddenly took sick, and the director, Stuart Maunder, flew from Sydney to take the role of the Major General. I couldn・t get a recording of Stuart Maunder・s excellent performance but here is a D・Oyly Cart recording of I am the Very Model of a Modern Major General sung by John Reed and Chorus.
