On this week・s program* a report from the annual conference of Museums Australia*. We learn about Quotes, Stats & Facts - An armoury for regional arts advocates from Rural Arts NSW* and a DVD of all known footage of the 1906 The Story of the Kelly Gang, arguably the world・s first feature film, with an accompanying monograph is published by the national Film and Sound Archive.  Our guest is Katherine Howell, who set her first published novel in the high tension world of the emergency service workers, a world where she has spent fifteen years.  And like Shane Moloney last week she makes the city of her choice, Sydney, a character in her book*

Museums Australia is the peak body for people who work in or for museums* be they members of boards of trustees, curators, gardeners, or volunteer guides.  It has just held its annual conference, this year in Canberra.  I spoke to Pat Sabine, the president of Museums Australia, and asked her for her selection of highlights from the conference*

Track 3:  "From St Kilda to Kings Cross・ / Paul Kelly

Paul Kelly, with his anthem to two Australian cities, Sydney and Melbourne* and for a song first recorded twenty-two years ago, it scrubs up really well*

The name Ned Kelly is scarcely out of the headlines, though he was hanged almost 130 years ago. Last week, it was revealed that his grave, thought to be in the grounds of Melbourne・s Pentridge prison, now becoming ironically enough an up-market housing estate, could not be found.  When the story was reported on television, it was partly illustrated with footage of a 1906 feature film, the Story of the Kelly Gang.  The previous week, a box set of a DVD of the reconstructed footage of that 1906 film and a scholarly essay on the topic were launched by the National Film and Sound Archive.  I spoke to the co-author of the essay, Dr Ina Bertrand and first asked was The Story of the Kelly Gang the first on the subject, and could it be called the world・s first feature film*

Ina Bertrand, co-author of the  monograph that accompanies the DVD of all known footage of the 1906 film, The Story of the Kelly Gang, produced in Melbourne by Tait and Gibson.
