On this week・s program* A wrap up of the Federal Budget*  we check out an exhibition of works that celebrate the environmental uniqueness of south-west Western Australia*and the Artist Run Initiatives in Victoria have banded together to promote their different identities* coordinate their exhibition programs* and publish a directory called Making Space.  Our guest is sculptor and weaver Lorraine Connelly Northey.  Her work draws on traditional Indigenous domestic designs and cultural aesthetics for inspiration but her materials are found on rubbish dumps and derelict buildings, the detritus of two centuries of European agricultural practice.

Hotspot is an exhibition that celebrates one of Australia・s and the world・s unique environments, an area called the Great Southern.   Hotspot opened for a season at the Western Australian Museum on May 5th.  Originally exhibited in Albany, Western Australia・s first European settlement, during the 2006 Great Southern Perth International Arts Festival, Hotspot showcases the work of 15 of the region・s contemporary established and emerging artists.  It is curated by Annette Davis and Shaaron du Bignon and we asked Annette about the particular qualities of the area that inspired the exhibition*

Artist Run Initiatives, or ARIs if your are one of the in-group, are an important feature of the visual arts scene, especially for newly emerging artists and those whose artistic practices are on the fringe.  ARIs in Victoria have come together to coordinate an exhibition program and publish a directory called Making Space, with financial assistance from state and Commonwealth government.  The editor of the Making Space project is Din Heagney, and I first asked him to distinguish ARIs from commercial galleries*

Din Heagney, the editor of the Making Space project and listeners withb very long memories may remember that Din was a contributor to Arts Alive a decade ago.  And look for making Space in aryts oriented bookshops and in the gallery shops.
