ARTS ALIVE PGM 18 - 2007 TX: 4:04 Eastern Time 30 April 2007 THIS PROGRAM IS 55' 50" WITH A NATURAL BREAK AT 30' 03" Hi I・m VINCENT O・DONNELL* And welcome to Arts Alive * Australian arts and culture current affairs radio* And this week we have a particular focus on the visual arts* but a warning to our Indigenous listeners: the work of a deceased Indigenous artist is discussed on this program*. In Perth, the annual national graduate show, the original and largest survey of the work of emerging artists attending our schools of art, opens at the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts, and in Melbourne a retrospective of the work of the late Kitty Kantilla, from Melville Island. Also, the Australia Council introduces the artists who will represent Australia at the Venice biennale. The biennale is by reputation the most important international exposition of contemporary visual arts. Our guest is Michael Turner, the senior curator at the Nicholson Museum within the University of Sydney. The Nicholson is one of a number of collections within the University that are opening themselves again to greater public access after years of being well kept secrets. But first the week in the arts* STING NEWS: (approx. 5.00) STING Ends approx. 6.00 Item 1: Hatched 07 /Hannah Matthews (5.09)) Starts with: :Hannah Matthews*.* Ends with: * that・s a real plus. And the Perth Institute of Contemporary Art・s website is, predictably enough, www.pica.org.au and there is a link there under .What・s On・ to the Hatched 07 show・s very classy website. And that site includes an electronic version of the show・s catalogue with illustrations of the works indexed by participating school of art. It is a very satisfactory substitute for being able to attend the show at PICA. And staying on the subject of the visual arts, a retrospective of the work of the late Kitty Kantilla, from the Tiwi Islands, has opened at the national Galley of Victoria, Federation Square Gallery. The story goes that Kantilla turned to art to support herself on the death of her second husband, Nugget, rather than take a widow・s pension. I asked the curator of the show, Judith Ryan why Kitty Kantilla was special* Item 2: Kitty Kantilla (3.56) Starts with: :Because she didn・t paint a bad work* Ends with: *about this artist・. Judith Ryan, Senior Curator of Indigenous Art at the National Gallery of Victoria, from whose collection many of the works on exhibition were drawn. Kitty Kantilla in on display at the Ian Potter Centre at Federation Square in Melbourne until 19 August after which the show moves to the Art Gallery of New south Wales. And what I found impressive about Kitty Kantilla・s work was principally two things. The diversity of media, from carved figures that came from the tradition of carving Pukamani, or burial poles, to finely wrought bark paintings and canvasses* to the elegant etchings* and second the steadfast attention to quality and detail, even in her last years. Kitty Kantilla died in Darwin in 2003. Best wishes to them all. And that the show for the week. Next week・s guest is FIONA BURNETT a soprano saxophonist, who combine family and career in a productive way.
