Our guest is Brendan Gullifer, author of The Pocket Book of Aussie Patriotism. With a title like that it could be a hand book for Xenophobes, a satire of Aussies social norms, or a ready reckoner of historical facts and fictions. We・ll find out later on the program but first a round up of news* STING NEWS: (approx. 4.30) STING Part of the first movement of Meldolsholm・s Opus 12 in E flat, performed by the new Hamer string quartet. Writers workshops are a dime a dozen these days , but a writers workshop specifically devoted to writing libretto* the spoken or sung part of music theatre* seem rare. Ihos Opera, the Hobart-based opera company, is holding such a workshop during the 10 Days on the Island festival this month. We spoke to Ihos・ producer, Marianne Fisher, and first asked whether the workshop was only of interest to those interested in classic opera composition* Item 2: Ihos Workshop (4.47) Starts with: :I think you・ll find that the workshop covers a broad area* Ends with: *I should imaging you would. Absolutely.; Marianne Fisher, producer with Ihos Opera in Hobart. The workshop runs from 23 to 27 March under the direction of Willem Bruls. Now I think everyone must have heard the Billy Thorpe one of Australia・s founding rockers died on 28 February of a heart attack at age 60. Visiting Melbourne・s Shrine of Remembrance last week to record that conversation with Garrie Hutchinson about war correspondents, reminded me how some war memorials had changed from passive memento more* places of contemplation of events now very distant from most Australians* to places of active recollection and interpretation* not celebration* of Australia・s part in wars of the past century or so. To investigate that transformation I went back to talk to the Chief executive of the Shrine, Denis Baguley, but first asked about the old Shrine* Item 5: First words: Last words: * That was Denis Baguley, the chief executive of The Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne* And that brings this week・s program to an end.
