At the urging of Senator Aden Ridgeway, the Democrat speaker on Arts and Indigenous Affairs, the Senate has passed a resolution urging the government to buy back the copyright to the works of the iconic Indigenous artist, the late Albert Namatjira (pictured), from the private company that presently owns the rights.
Brenda Croft, Senior Curator at the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra explains.
More to the story...:
The resolution of the Senate is not binding on the government. It is yet to be seen if the Prime Minister will accord to the paintings of Namatjira, recognition equivalent to the letters of cricketing icon, Don Bradman.
