Australian academics are increasing becoming interested in Asian culture. Edith Cowan University's Centre for Asian Communications, Media and Cultural Studies - held a symposium in September. It focused on cultural values and pop music in Asia and paid particular attention to the impact of new technologies and the concept of cultural capital as developed by French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu.
